- Jerry Hampden, a young female reporter for a large newspaper, comes up with her first scoop - a suicide precipitated by a lover who lost interest. The publisher nixes the story because the perpetrator is the influential owner of a large department store chain. When she lets the publisher know her displeasure, she is canned on the spot. Needing a job somewhere far from the city, her beau sets her up with an offer to be an editor for a small town newspaper, the Advocate in Apex, California. Her first name of Jerry gets her in the door for an interview. The Advocate's owner, Sam Webster, is not pleased to see that he has offered the editor position to a woman. She lets him know that she is the "best editor in the world", that he would do well to let her have a month's trial. He agrees. She is able to turn the tide on paper's ledger. There is a big story brewing in the community. Many people have invested in a wildcat oil well drilling. The local banker has drawn in many local investors in return form a share of the investment funds. He fully expects the well to fail. Much to his surprise, the well hits a strong pocket of oil. He tries to suppress news of the discovery while he tries to quietly buy back some of the shares. Jerry blows the lid off his scheme. He threatens to take over the newspaper from Sam. But Jerry has the upper hand. Part of the oil take-over scheme is the same department store owner whose story led to her firing. In addition, she has evidence of a false report of the well failing on bank stationery. The two shysters are forced to sign agreements that will help the locals, not exploit them.
- Underworld king Lee Lother has been killed aboard a ocean liner, several people could have been the murderer. There is his mistress Anya Roysen, a married woman, who was jealous of his flirtations with his old moll, night club singer Sally Marsh, who had agreed for one last night with Lother, to get her younger brother Ned out of the Lother's clutches because he has faked Lother's name on a check to pay his gambling debts. Then there is Sally's new flame Jimmy Brett, a con man and gentlemen thief, who has out-tricked Lother in a fixed poker game, and is, together with shorty, after the ladies jewels. Inspector McKinney suspects Joe Saunders, a recently released convict, who was arrested due to some tips by Lother, but Ned and Sally insist that they committed the crime alone.
- A group of thugs tries to steal the cursed title gem from a jeweler who has been hired to cut it into small, saleable pieces.

Of course when times got rough he felt free to desert his wife and little girl. Fortunately "Traps," a lawyer working for the underworld, will console them both.
- Barbara "Babs" Penfield is trying to convince her father, laundry-magnate F. Thorndyke Penfield, to invest money in a proposition from her sweetheart Rodney Randall. Her father refuses as he knows Randall is a fortune hunter, as did any 30's audience once Bradley Page appeared on the scene. While Penfield hurries out to award the Penfield Prize for Service at his laundry, Babs, finding her allowance has been stopped by her father, tries to sell her car to raise cash to give to Randall. While Babs is talking to the car dealer in his shop, "Con" Cornelius, just out of jail, sells the car, pockets the cash and makes a getaway. The car is bought by Jerry Bassett, who has just won the Penfield $1,000 Service and has quit his job at the laundry. (So much for service awards.) Jerry drives his flashy car to the Royal Valley, a swanky resort, where Randal is awaiting financial help from Barbara. Jerry meets Barbara on the road and gives her a lift to the hotel, thinking she is on her way there to apply for a job, and is surprised to later see her as a guest. Some things happen, Barbara sees Randall for what he really is, and decides she'd rather marry Jerry and keep the family laundry business in the hands of a real laundryman... even one who bails out when he gets his hands on a few bucks.
- A drunk stranger offers to provide a woman accused of prostitution with an alibi in court. Things escalate quickly, and before the court hearing is over, the judge has married the two.
- The discovery of an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve brings new meaning to a lonely and depressed Los Angeles dancer.
- Seeker Dean has found the gold he has been looking for for 15 years. Heading for the Government office, Boone Jackson kills him. Kickabout finds a cryptogram as to the gold's location and Sergeant Kinkaid solves the puzzle. But Jackson learns of the gold's location and to get it, he sets out to dynamite the dam that would flood the entire communuty.
- Guests at a luxury hotel are horrified when they witness a man literally "disappear into thin air." The vanished man's relatives hire a detective, who goes to the hotel to investigate the disappearance.
- Knobby discovers young hunk Palooka and trains him to fight the reigning champ, also drunken sot, Al McSwatt.
- Esther Clay, wife of District Attorney John Clay and mother of attorney Bob Clay, is having an affair with Jack Keene. Scorned by him Esther kills Jack. Bob comes to her defense and confesses to the shooting. The father prosecutes the son who receives a life imprisonment sentence. Jack Keene's butler Druggett knows the truth and blackmails Esther. Bob's girlfriend Peg Harper summons John Clay to the scene...
- The rebellious daughter of an army general becomes involved with a communist agitator, much to the consternation of her father, who instead attempts to pair her with a handsome yet dim-witted soldier.
- Don Mallory is the younger brother of ace newsreel photographer Cliff Mallory, and is continually urging Cliff to let him become a cameraman rather than going to college. Cliff refuses. He is assigned to get some newsreel footage of heiress Betty Kelley, who has never been shot. She arrives at the airport accompanied by a phony Earl, to whom she is reportedly engaged, eludes the cameraman by dressing as the pilot and drives off before Cliff discovers the deception. She also destroys the film he shoots of her by sneaking into the Kelley's heavily-guarded estate. Don, with the help of his girl friend, Jean Roberts, fares better and while Jean attracts the attention of the guards, Don sneaks into the estate and makes off with the film, arriving back at the newsreel office in time to pass it off as Cliff's. When the film is released, Betty threatens a libel suit and finally buys the newsreel company as a compromise. She assigns Cliff to cover a baby parade. Meanwhile, the "Earl" finds himself in a dilemma. Instead of extracting money from the family, he is approached by Betty's father on a huge stock deal and, since the Earl is allegedly wealthy, he finds himself on the spot when Mr. Kelley marks him down for a $25,000 investment. His method of raising the money is to arrange for his confederates to rob a bank and he will go along as the gang leader. Don is in the vicinity and manages to film the robbery, and then eludes the gang. As the film is being ran in the projection room, disclosing the Earl as the robbery leader, the Earl and his henchmen arrive. A fast and furious battle ensues between the newsreel men and the gangsters, but Don and Cliff subdue them just as the police arrive. Cliff decides that Don's true calling is as a newsreel photographer. Fade to relief.

- Prizefighter Bob Neal (Ray Walker) is in debt to gangster Vic Santell (Hooper Atchley) for training expenses. Santell orders Bob to take a dive in the fourth round so Santell can recoup prior gambling losses. Taunted by his ring opponent, Bob wins the fight. Realizing that his profession and underworld characters connected to it are causing him problems, Bob decides to join the police force. After taking nurse Mary Prentiss (Geneva Mitchell) to a drive-in restaurant where the total bill is a depression-era cheap eighty-two cents, Bob and his fellow officers round-up a gang of fur thieves in a warehouse shoot-out.

Daniel and a gang-member hide out in a small Connecticut town, where Danny marries a local girl, Mary Gate, when her guardians try to railroad her in a reform school when she refuses to marry their son. She is the innocent means by which Danny gets the stolen jewels to New York. Danny tells her he only went through with the marriage to save her, and gives her money to live on until she can obtain a position. He them leaves New York determined to quit the rackets and make himself worthy of her. She then provides the way in which he can.
- A young, newly-appointed rookie state trooper, John Shields, is celebrating with his sister Jane and friends when they hear over the radio that two bandits have just killed a lawyer and his watchman.

When Tamara mysteriously ends up dead, Paul is suspected of murder. Diana works desperately to clear his name.
- The female head of a criminal gang in Chinatown is after a valuable jewel, and lets nothing stand in her way of finding it.
- Dan O'Reilly, who has spent forty years working in oil fields, is about to strike oil when his land lease nears its end. J. C. Anderson of the Anderson Producing and Refining Corp. discovers that Dan's well is the richest in the history of Anderson's oil field, but because Dan's contract insures him a ten year additional lease if he strikes oil, Anderson tries to pay Dan to abandon his well. When Dan refuses, Anderson's men sabotage his drill. Penniless, Dan resigns himself to take the money, until his son Clifford, called "Fishtail," meets geologist Henry Langford, who promises to help. Henry then convinces Fishtail to go to school at night so that Henry can spend time with pretty schoolteacher Cynthia, who wants Fishtail to be the first O'Reilly to get an education. Then, when Henry discovers Anderson cheating the local independent contractors of a fair price for their oil, while unjustly foreclosing other leaseholders, he calls a town meeting. The townspeople confront Anderson, who appeases them, but the next day, while Dan rides the oil-drilling rig, the cables snap and he is killed. Henry is convinced Anderson is behind the murder. With two days left on the lease, Fishtail is nearly at oil sand when Anderson's thugs abduct Henry and Anderson tries to bribe Fishtail off the land. Fishtail refuses, so Anderson's men shut down the drill and knock him out. Henry, who has escaped, arrives in time to save Fishtail before Anderson's men dynamite the rig and the long-awaited oil is released. Cynthia, who has since fallen in love with Henry, then sends Fishtail to military school, and he returns a gentleman.
- A man's wife is put on trial for the murder of his first wife.
- A famished Felix reads an advertisement telling of a large reward for anyone that can give proof for the theory of evolution. He hurries to South Africa via Transatlantic Cable and interacts with the local animals. He angers a troop of monkeys by telling them why he's there (they're offended he would suggest they could be related to humans) and they chase him back through the cable to America.
- A film producer is found murdered on a ship, and among the suspects are a young woman whose mother was mistreated by him and his recently fired electrician.

- The Standard Railroad Company plans to run a line through Wild Horse Valley, and this is known by Charlie Doan, who seeks to buy up all the land in the valley in order to make huge profits by reselling it to the railroad. Ranchers are forced to sell through fear of the "Night Riders", a group of henchmen hired by Doan. He has repeatedly tried to buy the Running M Ranch owned by Ruth Williams and her seven-year-old brother Dickie, but she refuses to sell. Roving cowhands Jack Benton and his pals Bill, Chuck and Mopey learn from Ruth about Doan's intimidating efforts to buy her ranch, and they hire on to help her with the wild horse roundup. Henchmen Steve and Pete burn the Running M's barn. Doan learns that Jack has bought an option on the Jim Green ranch and uses this information to turn Ruth against Jack. The latter tells Doan that he is a special investigator for the railroad and empowered to make property purchases for the right-of-way in his own name. Appearing to turn against Ruth and his employer, Jack makes a deal with Doan to acquire Ruth's property. But Jack has a different plan in mind that will put an end to Doan and his Night Riders.
