- Based on the circa 2nd century BCE to 2nd Century CE, Sanskrit play "Daridra-Charudatta" by the famous Indian playwright Bhasa, "Utsav" faithfully follows Bhasa's story-line. Vasantasena, a courtesan who dances at the King Palaka's court hides in Charudatta's house while running away from the amorous attentions of the king's brother-in-law. She falls in love with Charudatta, though he is married and penniless. They have an affair. Meanwhile, the rightful heir to the throne - King Palaka's brother - escapes from prison. While he is being pursued by the king's troops, Charudatta helps him. The king's brother-in-law strangles Vasantasena when she refuses to submit to him and leaves her for dead. When Charudatta tries to have her jewels pawned, he is arrested for her murder. What happens to him and the other characters constitutes the final part of the film.

Soon Jhumri is also able to recollect her past life, and her love for Prakash. This does not auger well with Rita Malhotra (Asha Sachdev) who loves Suraj, and Appa (Prem Chopra), the son of the leader of the gypsies (Madan Puri), who will not stop at anything to make Jhumri his wife. Appa steals the portrait, and instigates the gypsies against Suraj, so that he can marry Jhumri, and perhaps separate the two lovers again in this birth also.

Anand and Nisha re-locate to Bombay, and after sometime Anand establishes himself as a leading doctor, is honored for his thesis, and gets to be the personal doctor of a leading Bollywood actress Maltimala. When Dr. Kothari and Dr. Bhutani go to visit them, they find while Nisha is still the same good-natured woman, who is expecting a child, Dr. Anand is a changed individual, who has no time for friends, personal life, or even his wife, and is not even aware that she is pregnant. The two return home disappointed, followed by Nisha, who has decided to separate from Anand. Alone now Anand has time on his hands to decide if he can divorce Nisha and marry the most sought-after actress in India.

Things come to such a pass that Ram decides to leave, takes to women and alcohol in a big way, and becomes the subject of a big scandal. Ram returns home after Diwan and Rajesh apologize and agree to live together in harmony. This harmony does not last long as soon Ram finds out that his very own father and son had conspired against him in a charade to get him to return home just to avoid further scandal. Watch what Ram does this time when bitterness and acrimony reinstates itself in the Kapoor household.
- Tells the story of newly weds Hamid and Salma. They move into a rental flat next door to the local red light district. The flat had been the former home of a well known mujra and qawali singer, Shamshad. Men still come to the door in the hope of seeing Shamshad and do not seem too put out by seeing Salma despite her protestations. The couple struggle to live within the bounds of their own moral code while the earnings of prostitution seem to be flaunted around them. Hamid gets more and more angry and seemingly unable to reconcile his morality with the immorality of the world and at one point beats his wife and then rapes her making her into a 'whore' of his fantasy. The story here bears resemblance to the later 'Ek Chadar Maili Si' by the same director and seems to explore the complex world of women and sexuality as viewed by Indian men: mother, goddess, whore. This film also explores the ethos of prostitution in its reality and as a metaphor for the outside world.

- Shankar is a hoodlum who lives in a shanty hut with his pregnant wife, Kanta, and makes a living as a career criminal. Shankar gets into a scuffle with J.K. and his men, killing one of them, getting arrested, tried in Court, and being sentenced to 14 years in jail. Kanta passes away, while Dharam is left in the care of a wrestler, Bhim Singh, and a mid-wife, Ganga. Dharam is taught to be a hoodlum, but wants to focus on becoming a singer, while Ranjit has taken to alcohol, gambling, and a life of crime under J.K. himself. After his discharge, Shankar finds to his delight out that Ashok has brought up Ranjit and both are stage actors. Then his world descends into chaos when he finds out that Ranjit is in fact Dharam, while his very son, Ranjit has taken to a life of crime. Angered at Dharam, he beats him up and asks him to be a hoodlum like himself, he also beats up Ranjit and asks him to obey Ashok and follow in his footsteps. Watch as things spiral out of control when a vengeful J.K. abducts Shankar and holds him hostage - the ransom - the dead body of Ashok - at any and all costs - and the person chosen to carry out this task is none other than Dharam!!

A few days later she manages to escape, enters the couple's house and when Ravi is away she decides that she will settle scores once and for all with Asha - the one she believes is out to claim her husband.
- Bombay-based wealthy Sagar leaves his disapproving father to get married to middle-classed Sarita, rents a flat, and drives a taxi for a living. - Thakur Chandrabhan lives a wealthy lifestyle in a small village in India. He is widowed and lives with his sister; a widowed daughter-in-law, Saraswati; and a grand-daughter, Tara, who is of marriageable age. Also living in this household is Bholanath, who is blind since birth, and helps with household chores. Tara's marriage is arranged with a young man, Pratap Singh, from a noble family, who approves of Tara, but demands a dowry of 3 Lakh Rupees. Chandrabhan does not have this much money, but Bholanath has been stashing away cash, that is guarded by a snake, and offers all of it to Pratap, who accepts it and absconds. Blind Bhola is unable to pursue him, but is instead bitten by the snake, regains his vision and sets forth to Bombay to locate Pratap. Several weeks later, Bholanath returns home, just in time to be told that he must marry Tara, as she refuses to marry anyone else. Tara notices something very odd about Bholanath as he calls her "Tara', not as "Little Mistress" as he used to; he is terrified of snakes; and seems more cultured and educated. The family decides to get the two engaged, however, the ceremony is interrupted by the arrival of the police, who have an arrest warrant for Bholanath for Theft, and Murder of a young woman named Lucy. The question remains, what was Bholanath up to in Bombay, whose money did he steal, and why did he end up killing Lucy?

A dying Kailash informs Malti that Ashok is Devki's, his first wife's son, and makes her promise that she wil continue to love Ashok as her own, which she does, and Kailash passes away. When she returns home she finds out that Amar is missing, possibly drowned. She blames this on Ashok and starts hating him. Sheroo escapes from prison, abducts Inspector Om and holds him prisoner, whipping him regularly. Years later Ashok has grown up, receiving nothing but hatred from Malti; Amar is still missing, while Anand has fallen into bad company and frequents a prostitute by the name of Rekha. Then a shady underworld figure named Ranjeet is killed and the police arrest Anand and hold him in prison. This news shatters Malti, first the death of her husband; then she is told that she is his second love; then Amar goes missing believed to be dead; and finally Anand - who may face the death sentence. And all Malti is left with is Ashok - the one she hates the most.
- Singer Chandermohan is born in a well-off family and is the only child. Since he is of marriageable age, both he and his parents want him to get married. He reluctantly falls in line with them, but then a series of events makes everyone change their mind about Chandermohan, namely a fake astrological chart that shows he is not Manglik, and his accusations about Mangal, who he alleges is leading a double life, romancing, wooing, and having a child with wealthy Nisha, Nirmala from Jeevan Saathi matrimonial bureau and Rina respectively, apart from being an alcoholic, robbing Chandermohan, stealing from his own house, and exhibiting goon-like behavior. Hilarious chaos results as Mangal's mom and daughter attempt to figure out why Chandermohan is spreading these tall tales about their son and father respectively.
- Advocate Anjali had been betrayed in love, and as a result has become an embittered woman, hating all men. She is assigned as a public prosecutor to ensure that accused, Rajesh Srivastav, gets hanged for homicide. She succeeds, but in order to teach Rajesh a lesson. Then Rajesh's advocate Malhotra finds out fresh evidence that Rajesh may not have committed the murder after all. How will this information affect Anjali and her conditions she has imposed upon Rajesh?
- A scientist creates a diamond that can focus sun-rays to burn through anything. The villain, in a bid to get the diamond, kills the scientist. The scientist's karate-learning sons, Desh and Vijay, are separated from each other and their mother. Vjay grows up with his karate instructor while Desh is reared by a gypsy camp. How they find each other and avenge their father's death forms the rest of the narrative.
- Dindayal lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay along with his wife, Shanti, and is employed with Dinanath. One day while at a reception, Dinanath's associate, Sunderdas, gets killed. Before dying he accuses Dindayal of killing him, as a result Dindayal is arrested, prosecuted in Court by Shakuntala Devi, found guilty, and sentenced to prison for life. Shanti gives birth to two sons, but loses her mental capabilities and is institutionalized. 18 years later Dindayal gets discharged, he takes a gun, locates Shakuntala, who has recently been appointed Judge, and confronts her. He then kills himself, but before dying asks Shakuntala to avenge his death by locating the real killer(s). Shakuntala hides his death from everyone, finds out that Dindayal has a look alike son, Shera, and recruits him to track down three possible suspects, namely Radheyshyam Pundit, Nissar Khan, and Peter. Shera agrees to do so for a fee, but he is attacked by the trio, decides to not to have to do anything with this matter and even states that he is not Dindayal's son, and neither is his mother's name Shanti, but Durga Devi. Neither Shakuntala nor Shera know that the person who masterminded Sunderdas' death is not amongst the trio, and that this person will soon enter their lives - shattering their peace and changing their lives forever.
- The Government of India had granted Rs.50,000/- to Prof. Harbanslal to conduct a study in the mountains bordering Tibet with India, called the Nangla Project. Harbanslal is sure that within these ice-caped mountains lies an entire temple made of pure gold. When Vikram Singh and his son, Bahadur, find out about the Nangla Project, they abduct Harbanslal in order to force him to reveal the exact location of this temple, in vain though and end up killing him. Having failed in this venture, they kidnap the wife and son of multi-millionaire Rajendra Jain and demand that he get Bahadur married to his daughter, Ritu. Rajendra discusses this matter with Ritu, and Ritu is ready and willing to do anything for her mother and brother. Rajendra hesitates, and soon he receives his wife's thumb in the mail. Losing no time, Rajendra and Ritu make arrangements for the marriage and communicate accordingly with the kidnappers. Soon a wedding date is fixed, however, things do not go as planned as Ritu is abducted by a man called Natwarlal and taken to his hideout. While driving there, their car breaks down and they are forced to take a lift from Jimmy Fernandes, albeit at gunpoint. Jimmy drops them off at an isolated spot, leaving Natwarlal to work out the details of getting the ransom money from Rajendra. Before that could happen, Jimmy shows up and abducts Ritu. With his wife and son still held captive with Vikram and his son, Rajendra is at his wits' end as to whose life he should give priority to. Watch as events unfold to show what exactly was the motive in Ritu's multiple abductions, who is benefit by these incidents, and it's connection with the Nangla Project.

- A wealthy man, Amarnath, witnesses a fight between two men, and watches one kill the other. He comes to the assistant of the killer, Vijay Kumar, assists him so that he can re-establish himself, as well as disposes off the body. Vijay is very grateful to him, and is willing to do anything for him. All Amarnath wants him to do is to woo and marry a crippled young bank employee by the name of Aarti Mathur. Vijay agrees to do so, and successfully woos not only Aarti but her entire family, and soon both get married. Aarti is able to walk again, much to her family's delight. Then Amarnath asks Vijay to seek Aarti's cooperation in looting the bank where she works or else he will expose his crime to the police. A shaken Vijay confides in Aarti and both reluctantly agree to rob the bank. The robbery takes place successfully, but Aarti is sure that the police suspect her, and she is worried. Amarnath then asks Vijay to kill Aarti so as to get rid of an unnecessary witness. The question is will Vijay agree to kill his wife, or will he let himself be arrested for murder? The title song "Dil se miley dil..." and "Yeh naina yeh kajal, yeh julfey yeh aanchal, khubsoorat si ho tum ghazal...." continue to be very popular.
- Raised in an atmosphere of hate, violence, and crime, Suraj alias Sunny is a cold-blooded killer, who mercilessly kills his victims for the right amount, usually following the instructions of his boss, Dhabariya.
