Il y a bien longtemps, Robert Marchand, ami de Renée Brancourt décède dans des conditions inexpliquées. Plusieurs années plus tard, Mary Roberts, journaliste criminelle au papier local, reçoit un coup de fil lui annonçant l'accident de voiture de Renée. Artiste reconnue jadis, elle ferait un bon sujet d'article. Mary convainc alors son éditeur de mener l'enquête. Il l'envoie prendre des renseignements chez Albert Frédéric, un avocat très influent, que les nombreux actes de mécénat ont rendu célèbre. Tandis que Mary fouille dans l'appartement de Renée qui lui a laissé ses clés, elle découvre un carnet de notes qui pourrait bien livrer de lourds secrets. Pendant ce temps, Albert, qui a tout intérêt à ce que les vieux démons ne ressortent pas, profite du désarroi de Michel, un jeune compositeur sans le sou qu'il protège. Michel, dont le couple vacille de plus en plus, se confie à son ami Albert. Un soir, c'est l'engueulade de trop, Michel quitte Blanche, sa femme hystérique. Michel court se réfugier chez Albert et l'informe de la situation. Profitant du sommeil de son hôte, Albert va chez Michel et découvre Blanche, morte sur son lit. Le lendemain matin, Albert parvient à convaincre Michel qu'il est nul autre que l'auteur du crime. En échange de son silence et de sa défense, Albert demande à Michel de supprimer Mary.
