- Glynis Granville writes mystery stories, while her husband Keith is a lawyer. That combination draws them into amateur detective work. Glynis is on the absent-minded side, which often complicates resolving the case.
- The Granvilles are lost late at night, and Mr. Granville is exhausted. They find an inn located off the highway that is closed for the season. It turns out that the owners, a brother and sister, have killed their other sister to inherit the property. Glynis witnesses the brother murder the handyman who discovers the dead sister's body.
- Mr. Butterworth is writing a story and asks Glynis for ideas about committing the perfect murder, but the victim is to be his wife.
- Mr. Crown is a literary agent, whose wife is divorcing him. His attorney convenientyly happens to be Glynis' husband. Crown's partner, however, is jealous of Crown's success, and murders him. Glynis finds out, and is saved in the nick of time by her friend Charlie.
- Glynis arranges to go to a prison pretending to be a convict for book research purposes. She encounters her exact double who knocks her out and switches places with her.
