- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsKeith CarradineKaren BlackRonee BlakleyOver the course of a few hectic days, numerous interrelated people prepare for a political convention. Before I sat down to write this list I rewatched most of the movies with a claim for the top few spots, just to be sure. I was shocked - absolutely shocked - to learn that The Godfather was NOT the best movie of my lifetime. This is. An endlessly interesting movie that circles around its characters as they drift in and out of each other's lives, and the camera's focus. And in the end, may just sum up what it means to be an American over the last 50 years.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMarlon BrandoAl PacinoJames CaanThe aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.Operatic in its scope and vision, beautifully acted. It's not about the mob, but about family and being an immigrant in America while searching for the American dream.
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsWoody AllenDiane KeatonTony RobertsAlvy Singer, a divorced Jewish comedian, reflects on his relationship with ex-lover Annie Hall, an aspiring nightclub singer, which ended abruptly just like his previous marriages. There have only been two movies that I have ever thought of as being my favorite movie ever. This was one of them, until 1985, but that's another tale and another list. I wonderfully funny, sad, endearing, and adult romantic comedy.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsWilliam H. MacyFrances McDormandSteve BuscemiMinnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard's inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of the quite pregnant Marge Gunderson. The best movie by the best directors currently at their peak. It's shockingly violent in places, shockingly funny in others, surprisingly touching and human in still more. Plus, all the virtues of the Coens and their usual collaborators: Carter Burwell, Skip Lievsay and Roger Deakins. Meaning it lookd sounds better than anything else out there.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroCathy MoriartyJoe PesciThe life of boxer Jake LaMotta, whose violence and temper that led him to the top in the ring destroyed his life outside of it.Absolutely brutal movie that is almost as impossible to watch as it is to turn away from. DeNiro and Pesci turn in two of the greatest film performances of my life time.
- 19641h 35mPG8.4 (519K)97MetascoreDirectorStanley KubrickStarsPeter SellersGeorge C. ScottSterling HaydenAn unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.Kubrick leaves me cold more often than not; this movie leaves me laughing and thinking. While Sellers is real good in all three roles, it's George C. Scott I remember the most.
