top 25 films by Hitchcock, Scorcese, Kubrick and Wilder
Any top 100 or 250 films of all time will be tentative, for favorites depend on my mood and will have to vie with each other for top place, thus I have started by picking the first four directors that came to mind, to make my task easier.

- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKirk DouglasRalph MeekerAdolphe MenjouAfter a failed attack on a German position, a general orders three soldiers, chosen at random, court-martialed for cowardice and their commanding officer must defend them.Possibly the greatest film of all time. Never before or since has corruption versus heroism been cast in the stark terms of Kirk Douglas versus George MacReady and Adolph Menjou. And of course the crushing of the cockroach and the statement: "Now you've got the edge on him".
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsFarley GrangerRobert WalkerRuth RomanA psychopathic man tries to forcibly persuade a tennis star to agree to his theory that two strangers can get away with murder by submitting to his plan to kill the other's most-hated person.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsAnthony PerkinsJanet LeighVera MilesA Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.
- 19641h 35mPG8.3 (520K)97MetascoreDirectorStanley KubrickStarsPeter SellersGeorge C. ScottSterling HaydenAn unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop. The second great Sterling Hayden performance in a Kubrick film takes a back seat to Peter Sellers' triple tour de force. Although it would be nearly impossible to stage this as a play, all three plot lines are pieces with a unity of place and of course a unity of time: 1. the war room, 2. the damaged B- 52 and 3. Jack Ripper's quarters. Too many great quotes to begin now, but let me just say, "We'll meet again, don't know where don't know when, but we'll meet again some sunny day."
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.I saw the movie in the month of May and was perfectly ready to see snow covering the ground when I exited the theater. One of the tests of whether a movie has truly drawn me in. Scatman Crothers relationship with Danny and Shelley Duvall truly related to her son are the elements of goodness versus Jack Nicholson's mad evil. "All work and no play make Jack a dull boy". Anyone who ever suffered from substance abuse and attempting sobriety, plus any writer who ever suffered from writer's block, can truly identify.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.In 1968 this movie was slow, by today's standards this movie is exceedingly slow, but still it was a breakthrough film. The star of the film was HAL especially during the death scene, when Duryea is busy unscrewing his memory and HAL is recounting his earliest memories, a performance of his ability for its preening parents. The final moments of psychedelic loneliness and existential angst are a little overboard even when stoned, but the monkeys at the film's start make up for it.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsSterling HaydenColeen GrayVince EdwardsCrook Johnny Clay assembles a five-man team to plan and execute a daring racetrack robbery. This is not Kubrick's greatest, nor technically his first, but certainly his first great film. Sterling Hayden has more than one great movie to his name, but this film particularly his despair when the wind blows the gold back into the hills, must be seen. Elisha Cook Junior in his best role other than the Bogart films.
