- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMartin SheenMarlon BrandoRobert DuvallA U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.Ever since I bought the Complete Dossier Edition of the film, I've been hooked onto this film since. This film is just perfect from acting, directing, writing, photography, etc. When the film starts with the sound of the helicopter motor in the black screen gets me pumped up. The narration by Martin Sheen is the best narration that I ever heard in my life. Apocalypse Now is the all time favorite and that's saying a lot consider the films I have on this list. "Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you were going all the way."
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroCathy MoriartyJoe PesciThe life of boxer Jake LaMotta, whose violence and temper that led him to the top in the ring destroyed his life outside of it.While I love Goodfellas very much and many people consider it Martin Scorsese's best film. Raging Bull for me beats Goodfellas and why I think of this....if Scorsese never made Raging Bull, he never would of made Goodfellas or anything else. Scorsese was in that point in his life that he was leading into self destruction until Robert De Niro told him to make this film. Raging Bull is the cinematic rebirth for Scorsese that would lead him to make Goodfellas and so on.
- DirectorSam PeckinpahStarsWarren OatesIsela VegaRobert WebberAn American barroom pianist and his prostitute girlfriend go on a trip through the Mexican underworld to collect the bounty on the head of a dead gigolo.By far the best of Sam Peckinpah and the most personal he has ever done up till that point. Yes, its better than The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs, and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (and I love those movies by the way).
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsEllen BurstynJared LetoJennifer ConnellyThe drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..Of the five films that he has made (I still need to see Black Swan and The Fountain), Darren Aronofsky's 2000 film is by far his best film and that's saying a lot. The Wrestler would be my second choice because it's the simplest film he ever done but yet creates a powerful film. But I chose this film because I believe this film is very important not only to Darren for the public. This is a film that needs to be watch by students in schools to understand what drugs can do to you and what the consequences can be. Its a horror film as well as a drama and its one of the most disturbing films I ever seen.
- DirectorAlex CoxStarsGary OldmanChloe WebbDavid HaymanThe relationship between Sid Vicious, bassist for British punk group Sex Pistols, and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen is portrayed.Directed by Alex Cox, I still think his later film Walker is the most interesting of his works (and I talk about that later) but Sid and Nancy is my favorite and I believe it's his best film. I later read Roger Ebert's review which at the end he wrote "If you have an open mind, it is possibly true that the less you care about Sid Vicious, the more you will admire this movie." That's exactly what I felt when I saw this movie. We may not care about Sid and Nancy, but they did really love each other and its interesting how despite their relationship was chaotic, they will stand by together to the very end (and really they did). Love sure does Kill.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsHenry FondaCharles BronsonClaudia CardinaleA mysterious stranger with a harmonica joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad.I had to chose this or Once Upon a Time in America. I decided on this because it's Sergio Leone's best western he has ever made. While his Dollars Trilogy is the most famous of his work, this neglected gem shoots all three films out of the water. The first time I saw this was TCM I think but despite the slow pace, I was hooked into the movie by the first 15 minutes of this movie. It's too bad he never made a western like this again (and Duck You Sucker was pretty damn good and that's more neglected than this film).
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption. And the next film I pick is this film....surprised anyone???? I love all of Quentin Tarantino's films and this is the ultimate of his movies. Like Apocalypse Now, everything in this film is perfect. And I can quote almost every line in the movie (tells you how much I always watch this movie). I hope Quentin came make a film that is as powerful and memorable as this.
- DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsAl PacinoMichelle PfeifferSteven BauerIn 1980 Miami, a determined Cuban immigrant takes over a drug cartel and succumbs to greed."Say hello to my little friend". I wonder how many times that line has been said in other movies.
- DirectorRoger AllersRob MinkoffStarsMatthew BroderickJeremy IronsJames Earl JonesLion prince Simba and his father are targeted by his bitter uncle, who wants to ascend the throne himself. The last eight films I listed are hardcore R rated films. So why The Lion King...well I was once a kid wasn't I???
- DirectorMark L. LesterStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerRae Dawn ChongDan HedayaA retired Special Forces colonel tries to save his daughter, who was abducted by his former subordinate. How can I not love this movie. The most entertaining action film next to Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. The movie is so silly but yet that's the fun of the movie. Arnold is a heart of gold no matter how good or bad the films that he is in.
- DirectorAlex CoxStarsEd HarrisRichard MasurRene AuberjonoisAn unconventional retelling of the life of William Walker, a 19th century American mercenary leader who became the president of Nicaragua. As I said, this is Alex Cox's most interesting film that he made. It's not exactly his best film but its a good film despite how very neglected the film is. I love how Alex takes a huge risk with this movie and doesn't back down at all. He feels that this is his best film and I can understand why. Joe Strummer's score is some of the best I ever listen to especially at the end when the city burns. To be honest, I don't know whether I should love or hate this movie but my heart tells me to love this film and so I will. Believe me, Straight to Hell Returns (no I didn't see the original cut) was another of those love or hate films and I'm leading towards hate but I think I need to keep watching the film over and over to like the film better...maybe.
- DirectorSpike LeeStarsDanny AielloOssie DavisRuby DeeOn the hottest day of the year on a street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, everyone's hate and bigotry smolders and builds until it explodes into violence. My favorite Spike Lee film however I still need to see Malcolm X.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroRay LiottaJoe PesciThe story of Henry Hill and his life in the mafia, covering his relationship with his wife Karen and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito. While I said that Raging Bull was better, this is the second best Martin Scorsese film.
