- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsMark WahlbergMichael PeñaRhona MitraA marksman living in exile is coaxed back into action after hearing of a plot to kill the President. After being-double crossed for the attempt and on the run, he sets out for the real killer and the truth. Not epic, but engaging, twisting. Beautiful opening river flyover in Ethiopia. Kate Mara from Transsiberian.
DATE: 2011-03-21 - DirectorDolph LundgrenStarsDolph LundgrenMelissa MolinaroHristo ShopovWhen the Russian Premier is taken hostage at a rock concert in Moscow, it's up to a drummer, an ex-biker, to save him.Command Performance does well at straddling the line between a "fight movie" and a "plot" movie. There are sufficient fight scenes for those who like that from the Dolph Lundgren types, with the violence those fans expect. But there is also a story here, plus a few good characters to like and hate. The opening Moscow scenes are fun, then the movie goes inside an arena and never comes out. Perhaps a bit cheesy that the Director (Lundgren) casts his daughter in a role.
DATE: 2011-05-29 - DirectorRobert RedfordStarsRobin WrightJames McAvoyTom WilkinsonMary Surratt is the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination trial of Abraham Lincoln. As the whole nation turns against her, she is forced to rely on her reluctant lawyer to uncover the truth and save her life.Saw in theater. Evan Rachel Wood and some historical significance
DATE: 2011-04-24 - DirectorSidney LumetStarsRichard GereJulie ChristieGene HackmanAfter a close friend drops out of politics, a political consultant helping to find a replacement finds a web of corruption and deceit as well.1980s politics is like 2000s

DATE: 2011-06-30 - DirectorPeter GalisonRobb MossStarsSteven AftergoodThomas BlantonJames BruceAmidst the American hunger for instantaneous news and up-to-date "facts," this unflinching film uncovers the vast, invisible world of government secrecy.Boring, but at least it covers both sides.
DATE: 2011-07-01 - DirectorJean-Pierre JeunetStarsAudrey TautouMathieu KassovitzRufusDespite being caught in her imaginative world, Amelie, a young waitress, decides to help people find happiness. Her quest to spread joy leads her on a journey where she finds true love.Cute, good characters, but not terrific. Waited many years to watch this one.
DATE: 2011-06-30 - DirectorArmando IannucciStarsTom HollanderPeter CapaldiJames GandolfiniA political satire about a group of skeptical American and British operatives attempting to prevent a war between two countries.Very funny British politicians and perspectives on their American ilk.
DATE: 2011-06-01 - DirectorPeter WeirStarsRussell CrowePaul BettanyBilly BoydDuring the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.Good drama, GREAT surround audio, and doesn't resort to cheesy storylines.
DATE: 2011-06-01 - DirectorWoody AllenStarsEvan Rachel WoodLarry DavidHenry CavillA middle-aged, misanthropic divorcé from New York City surprisingly enters a fulfilling, Pygmalion-type relationship with a much younger, unsophisticated Southern girl.A Woody Allen movie I could enjoy. Evan Rachel Wood is always enjoyable, and the quirkiness of Woody Allen's stuff is more entertaining this time than it's usual weirdness.
DATE: 2011-06-01 - DirectorKenny OrtegaStarsMichael JacksonAlex AlAlexandra ApjarovaA compilation of interviews, rehearsals, and backstage footage of Michael Jackson as he prepared for his series of sold-out shows in London.Peak onto the stage and into the head of Michael Jackson; prepare to be entertained, fascinated, and saddened by the loss of an artist.
DATE: 2011-07-01 - DirectorChristian DuguayStarsBarbora BobulovaShirley MacLaineOlivier SitrukThe life story of legendary fashion designer Coco Chanel.Nice insight to a legacy, a period of time, and a woman that fought through the roller coasters of an interesting life.
DATE: 2011-06-01 - DirectorRon MaxwellStarsTom BerengerMartin SheenStephen LangIn 1863, the Northern and Southern forces fight at Gettysburg in the decisive battle of the American Civil War.More of a dramatic representation, but some historical explanations. Well acted, but too narrow despite the 4 hours invested.
DATE: 2011-06-01 - DirectorNicolas RoegStarsJenny AgutterDavid GulpililLuc RoegTwo city-bred siblings are stranded in the Australian Outback, where they learn to survive with the aid of an Aboriginal boy on his "walkabout": a ritual separation from his tribe.I love the subtely of most Australian flics, and this is no exception. Well acted by the youngsters, thus credit to Director Nicolas Roeg.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsWill Rogers Jr.Jane WymanCarl Benton ReidThe homespun humorist and social critic starts as a cowboy and goes on to vaudeville, movies, and radio.Good to get a grasp of the man whose name is synonymous with American.

DATE: 2011-07-08 - DirectorJohn BadhamStarsJason PatricIrène JacobThomas LockyerHarry Donovan is an art forger who paints a fake Rembrandt picture for $500,000. Marieke, the woman he meets in Paris and gets into bed with, turns out to be the art expert whom Harry's clients are using to check the counterfeit picture he painted.Very good title, acting, and story line. Entertaining twists, passionate pursuits, and characters you can root for, or root against.
DATE: 2011-07-10 - DirectorWilliam DieterleStarsEdward G. RobinsonEdna BestEddie AlbertStarting with a small flock of carrier pigeons, nineteenth-century entrepreneur Julius Reuter turns his small company into Europe's most respected news wire service.History, fortitude, and humor in a good 1940 movie. Eddie Albert's quirky character brightens the show, but the bright light comes from seeing the regular guy, Reuters, flip and flop his way to building a successful business and family.
DATE: 2011-07-10 - DirectorSam MendesStarsLeonardo DiCaprioKate WinsletChristopher FitzgeraldA young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children.Terrific portrayal of the 1950s without the fluffy "Happy Days" perspective. Behavior of people was highly flawed, not idyllic, and they also had their behavior challenged by the times, not paved with gold.
DATE: 2011-07-11 - DirectorVittorio De SicaStarsLamberto MaggioraniEnzo StaiolaLianella CarellIn post-war Italy, a working-class man's bicycle is stolen, endangering his efforts to find work. He and his son set out to find it.Stops short of being "gripping," but this is a compelling film of struggle for a satisfying life. The best quality of this title is that it seems to render reality without injecting superfluous action.
DATE: 2011-07-20 - DirectorGregory JacobsStarsJohn C. ReillyDiego LunaMaggie GyllenhaalTwo con artists try to swindle a currency collector by selling him a counterfeit copy of an extremely rare currency bill.Well-paced story line, John C. Reilly at his best, and a spot-on performance by Diego Luna. Perhaps not enough Maggie Gyllenhall! Twists and turns in a near-perfect blend of surprise and predictability that make this an enjoyable film, but not a stand-out.
DATE: 2011-07-21 - DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsMatt DamonJason IsaacsGreg KinnearDiscovering covert and faulty intelligence causes a U.S. Army officer to go rogue as he hunts for Weapons of Mass Destruction in an unstable region.Very poorly done movie, mostly a build-up to one big chase scene, and not a lot else.
DATE: 2011-08-01 - DirectorJames CameronStarsSam WorthingtonZoe SaldanaSigourney WeaverA paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.Recommend this to anyone for the production milestone I believe it represents. The story works, too. Yes, there is reason to fault the implied messages of conqueror versus native and man versus nature, but those can be debated after the cinema is enjoyed.
DATE: 2011-08-01 - DirectorWes AndersonStarsGeorge ClooneyMeryl StreepBill MurrayAn urbane fox cannot resist returning to his farm raiding ways and then must help his community survive the farmers' retaliation. Can't grasp why this movie was made, except perhaps as a student exercise, like a sandbox project to gain some computer graphics experience. So boring I fell asleep.
DATE: 2011-07-26 - DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsTimothy HuttonAmy MadiganMichael RookerA writer's fictional alter ego wants to take over his life...at any price.Quite a gripping horror story, with difference-making unpredictability. Not for those who get queasy, but the gore is fitting.
DATE: 2011-08-01 - DirectorRoger DonaldsonStarsKevin CostnerGene HackmanSean YoungA coverup and witchhunt occur after a politician accidentally kills his mistress.Captivating, though not special, mystery drama. Gene Hackman, for once, isn't the real star here. Good plot and good Costner performance.
DATE: 2011-08-02 - DirectorDavid MametStarsPhilip Seymour HoffmanWilliam H. MacyRebecca PidgeonA movie crew invades a small town whose residents are all too ready to give up their values for showbiz glitz.Silly show. Movie-making attempt at the humor like "The Office." Wouldn't give this one a recommendation, but didn't hate it either.
DATE: 2011-08-02 - DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Gwyneth PaltrowTerrence HowardAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil.Gwyneth Paltrow is the best thing about this movie, in her character, appearance, and performance.
DATE: 2011-08-03 - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HanksChristopher WalkenBarely 17 yet, Frank is a skilled forger who has passed as a doctor, lawyer and pilot. FBI agent Carl becomes obsessed with tracking down the con man, who only revels in the pursuit.Took a long time to have the chance to see this one. The fact that it is basically a true story gets some extra credit for this movie. Leonardo performs well again.
DATE: 2011-08-06 - DirectorAlexandra PelosiStarsAlexandra PelosiGhina Abul-KhoudoudHassan Abul-KhoudoudDocumentary about new United States immigrants spanning all fifty states.Special documentary that any American should be proud to see. Kudos to Director Alexandra Pelosi for the commitment and effort to tell the one story that matters, Being American, through many many stories of those who didn't get the gift by birth, but sought the prize of citizenship they so coveted.
DATE: 2011-08-20 - DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.Creative, intriguing, and much better CGI, to render scenery, that is much better than most movies.
DATE: 2011-09-26 - DirectorDouglas HornStarsD.B. SweeneyMissi PyleCedric YarbroughA 38-year old former chef starts all over again when he interviews for entry-level corporate jobs--and can't get one.A fun, warm, thoughtful film. Won't leave lasting memories or feelings, but I liked it. Character shines throughout.
