- DirectorAng LeeStarsWinston ChaoMay ChinAh-Lei GuaTo satisfy his nagging parents, a gay landlord and a female tenant agree to a marriage of convenience, but his parents arrive to visit and things get out of hand.10 - My favorite gay movie. Brokeback Mountain wasn't director Ang Lee's first gay movie... Any person who might have had a cross-cultural gay relationship will identify with these circumstances. We are now entering "La Cage aux Folles" country, and "The Wedding Banquet" does take some of the same delight in constructing a comedy of misunderstandings and deceptions.
- DirectorJames IvoryStarsJames WilbyRupert GravesHugh GrantTwo English school chums find themselves falling in love at Cambridge. To regain his place in society, Clive gives up Maurice and marries. While staying with Clive and his wife, Maurice discovers romance in the arms of the gamekeeper Alec.10 - Classic Merchant-Ivory production quality (Howard's End, A Room with a View, The Ends of the Day, etc.), but this one is gay. E.M. Forster's (fantasy) tale of love during the Victorian Era (oh, sorry, gay love...). A classic!
- DirectorHee-il LeesongStarsKim Nam-gilLee Young-hoonHyeon-cheol JoSumin is an orphan trying to balance work in a factory with study at an art college and an evening job. One night, a rich young businessman makes an advance on him during one of his driving jobs.10 - The best gay movie so far out of South Korea (ok that was too easy). Seriously, a very good story. My 2nd best out of Asia.
- StarsAl PacinoMeryl StreepEmma ThompsonSeveral disparate but connected individuals go through the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980s.10 - Tony award winning already. Great cast, great acting, great story, multiple emmy's and all deserved. Love the actors/actresses playing many parts, just like in the plays.
- DirectorAng LeeStarsJake GyllenhaalHeath LedgerMichelle WilliamsEnnis and Jack are two shepherds who develop a sexual and emotional relationship. Their relationship becomes complicated when both of them get married to their respective girlfriends.10 - So beautiful and so sad. Brilliance.
- DirectorStephan ElliottStarsHugo WeavingGuy PearceTerence StampTwo drag performers and a transgender woman travel across the desert to perform their unique style of cabaret.10 - This launched the careers of Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving (and they haven't done drag since). Sorry Julie Newmar, you can't hold a candle to this.
- DirectorJonah MarkowitzStarsTrevor WrightBrad RoweTina HolmesWhen his college dreams are sidelined by family obligations, a young man finds comfort in surfing with his best friend's brother.10 - A bit eclectic but spot on with the emotions. One of those "what if" moments in a family. (ok, more than one family) Wonderful storytelling.
- DirectorRob EpsteinStarsHarvey FiersteinHarvey MilkAnne KronenbergA documentary of the successful career and assassination of San Francisco's first elected gay city supervisor.10 - If you have seen Sean Penn in Milk - here is the script. The real deal of where the political power of gay rights started in the US. I sometimes wonder if his 'martyrdom' advanced us more than if he had lived and continued his politics in San Francisco...
- DirectorKar-Wai WongStarsLeslie CheungTony Leung Chiu-waiChang ChenA couple take a trip to Argentina but both men find their lives drifting apart in opposite directions.9 - Did this foreshadow the death of Leslie Cheung? Stylistic in the cinematography, this is a gay classic. Tragic and beautiful as we witness the dysfunctional relationship of Yiu-Fai and Po-Wing - basically I love to hate you thing. I swear I might get lung cancer from watching his (lots of cigarettes).
- DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsTom HanksDenzel WashingtonRoberta MaxwellWhen a man with HIV is fired by his law firm because of his condition, he hires a homophobic-small time lawyer as the only willing advocate for a wrongful dismissal suit.10 - Tom Hanks well deserved Oscar roll. BUT who wouldn't want to be Antonio Banderas bf? With drug cocktails things have changed but this reminds us when AIDS was a very quick kiss of death.
- DirectorTom GustafsonStarsTanner CohenWendy RobieJudy McLaneA bullied and demoralized gay student at an all-boys school uses a magical flower derived from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream' to turn many in his community gay, including a comely rugby player for himself.10 - My gay wet dream. Based on A Midsummer Night's Dream, what would you do if you had the power to turn all of the homophobic people in your life enamored with the same sex (aka, Titania loving an Ass)? What it lacks in production quality and acting is made up for in a great story and several wonderful musical numbers.
- DirectorPaul BogartStarsAnne BancroftMatthew BroderickHarvey FiersteinArnold is a gay man working as drag queen in 1971 NYC. He meets a handsome bisexual man.10 - This and Tidy Endings put Harvey Fierstein on the gay map after he had done well on Broadway (prior to Hairspray). Matthew Broderick was in this after his success in Ferris Bueller's Day Off since he played the roll of David originally in the Broadway play (a risk to his career).
- DirectorQ. Allan BrockaStarsDerek MagyarGeorge JonsonPatrick BauchauA successful male escort describes in a series of confessions his tangled romantic relationships with his two roommates and an older, enigmatic male client.10 - Quirky story and lots of nice eye-candy throughout. A fun movie to watch.
- DirectorLisa CholodenkoStarsAnnette BeningJulianne MooreMark RuffaloTwo children conceived by artificial insemination bring their biological father into their non-traditional family life.10 - Strong performances from the leads. The movie was limited to a single print for all of Singapore since the film “normalised” the “homosexual lifestyle”.
- DirectorBob FosseStarsLiza MinnelliMichael YorkHelmut GriemA female girlie club entertainer in Weimar Republic era Berlin romances two men while the Nazi Party rises to power around them.10 - Bob Fosse, Liza Minelli, Joel Grey, Michael York. Throw Helmut Griem in and you have instant woody. A classic in any gay or straight library. Spine tinglers have to be "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" and the final seconds of the movie. A Must See for any movie lover.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsJulie AndrewsJames GarnerRobert PrestonA struggling female soprano in 1934 Paris finally finds work after posing as a female impersonator, but it complicates her personal life when a visiting Chicago gangster finds himself inexplicably attracted to the seemingly male performer.10 - My 2nd favorite Dame Julie Andrew movie after the Sound of Music. Oh, and how have we strayed! (except for S.O.B.) Husband Blake Edwards writes an directs a classic French farce with Robert Preston and James Garner in tow of a woman pretending to be a gay Polish aristocrat man pretending to be a woman. Leslie Ann Warren should have won an Oscar for this.
- DirectorGavin MillarStarsStockard ChanningHarvey FiersteinJean De BaerA man, whose companion dies of A.I.D.S., confronts his lover's ex-wife and the two end up building a friendship while coping with the emotional aftermath of the death.10 - Harvey Fierstein's touching TV movie of two people picking up the pieces of their lives after his lover's and her ex-husband's death from AIDS.
- DirectorOlga StolpovskajaDmitriy TroitskiyStarsDamir BadmaevLyubov TolkalinaEvgeniy KoryakovskiyOn their first anniversary, Vera comes home to discover her boyfriend Tim in bed with another man.9 - One of the best love triangle films I've seen. Every time I watch this, I am just fascinated with Uloomji's character and appearance.
- DirectorMarek KanievskaStarsRupert EverettColin FirthMichael JennBased on the life of the young Guy Burgess, who would become better known as one of the Cambridge Spies.9 - What if your classmates at an all boys school were the 20-25 year-old versions of Cary Elwes, Rupert Everett, Colin Firth and Michael Jenn?
- DirectorHettie MacdonaldStarsGlen BerryLinda HenryScott NealJamie is a shy teenager, often bullied at school. His neighbour Ste has a rough time at home, being beaten by his father and brother. This issues bring them together and they find that what they feel for each other is more than friendship.9 - One of the better 'coming of age' stories if you can handle the thick accents.
- DirectorEytan FoxStarsOhad KnollerYousef 'Joe' SweidDaniella Wircer"The Bubble" is the story of a group of young people who live in Tel Aviv, Israel. The movie follows the group's difficulties of living in Israel's reality. Their routine breaks when a young Palestinian man enters their lives.9 - Tragic and beautiful. Two star-crossed lovers, one Israeli, one Palestinian. I was anxious to watch this but I'm glad I did. Deeply moving, a must see.
- DirectorBill CondonStarsIan McKellenBrendan FraserLynn RedgraveThe last days of Frankenstein (1931) director James Whale are explored.9 - James Wale directed classics Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and the Man in the Iron Mask. He was also one of the few people in Hollywood at the time to be open about his homosexuality. An outstanding biopic and you get to see lots of gratuitous skin of a younger Brendan Fraser (the gardener).
- DirectorKyu-dong MinStarsJu Ji-hoonKim Jae-WookYoo Ah-inJin-hyeok opens a cake shop in an old antique shop, hiring Seon-woo, Korea's best pastry chef, who fell in love with him in high school. Also there, are Su-young, crushing on Seon-woo, ex-boxer Ki-beom, and Seon-woo's French ex-boyfriend.9 - Based on the manga which lead to an animated series, the movie is not exactly a gay movie. Wonderful cinematography and special affects ala Amélie.
- DirectorYuan ZhangStarsSi HanJun HuJing YeBefore the 1990s P.R.China criminalized the LGBT population. Without family law and marriage law for the LGBT couples, many had to secretly encounter for sexual activities with the risk of police arrests.9 - "East Palace, West Palace" - I think this would make an excellent stage play too. Deeply disturbing and fascinating. The story is a nightlong interrogation of A Lan, a Chinese gay man arrested by Hu Jun, a policeman, in a park for cruising. A Lan tells his story as Hu Jun struggles to understand why someone would seek out abusive relationships again and again. An excellent psychological journey.
- StarsOlympia DukakisDonald MoffatChloe WebbThe stories of several colorful characters living in San Francisco.9 - This was originally aired on PBS and is based on Armistead Maupin's book of life around a San Francisco rental house and their interesting occupants. Solidly entertaining fun set before the time of AIDS.
