What best characterizes Christian Bale is the fact he's never where you expect him to be.
Be it a deeply disturbed, gore-obcessed yuppi serial killer as in American Psycho(2000), a severely emanciated insomniac (The Machinist - 2004) or a cocaine-addicted former boxer (Fighter - 2010), his ability to breathe life into such diametrically opposed characters commands respect. He is, moreover, well known for his strong involvment into his roles which sometimes engenders drastic physical transformations in short time periods. Besides, although the physical aspect is what strikes most, the psychological and inner work is not left behind, as he spends hours/days/weeks trying to fully steep himself in his characters.
This hard work, taken to such extreme level, may shock, but allows Bale to bring such credibility and authenticity to his characters, and to pull many emotionnal strings.
As a matter of fact, he can successively inspire dolefulness and hope, fear and amiration, pity and pride. Some acting abilities that are too uncommon nowadays.
