Favourite movie of all time. Its the total impression of the film that satifies me in a way most deep (or "trying hard") movies do not. This is intellectual in its own way, and although its a action flick, it really gives out the message that there is hope and good out there. Combined with a extremely tight script, and Arnold in one of his best performances (god knows, he played a in a lot of *beep* flicks as well) makes up for an uniqe movie experience. The setting, the mood, the cast, the cinematography, sound editing, action sequenses.... its all done to a T. And it grossed HUGHELY as well, and although this shouldnt be a criterium for a film to be good, the people behind movies try to make money of it, and one of the aspects of a good film is hitting a huge audience spread. I am a film student myself, and i would say that if a film doesnt even its budget there is something wrong (maybe marketing) but now Im way out of topic.
The reason this works so well is so many, and many things i cant even put my finger on it. Its one of those movies that just makes you feel something, either awe, sorrow, empathy, anger, excitment, and this is from a ACTION movie. I am not a huge fan of films with only "action" in its genre, although this is sci-fi as well, I allways look at the "sci-fi" just as a back layer in wich the real story takes place. A story about people and hope.
2. There Will Be Blood (2007)
R | 158 min | Drama
A story of family, religion, hatred, oil and madness, focusing on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business.
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Ciarán Hinds, Martin Stringer
Votes: 640,864 | Gross: $40.22M
Well, this is a great movie. Beatufil production design and cinematographyof the old west, but that just adds to the value, because Daniel Day-Lewis performs a character that is what all other actor arts are being measurd up against. Or at least it should be like that, because Daniel Plainview is a piece of art. Hands down the best performance i have seen. I wonder how much driection he got, or if he created Daniel all by himself, wich im pretty certain he did.
The story is also good, but for me, this is just in the background while we are watching Daniel Plainview. At least for me, this is a study in acting at the highest level, but it would of course be nothing without the writing and the vision of Paul Thomas Anderson. Its a voyeuristik view into the cynism and we are being shown a primal, yet intellingent man tucked in a suit.
Its raw, its disturbing, its not for everybody (not a first date movie), and its slow paced, but the first 20 minutes without dialouge was amazing anyhow. I didnt miss any dialouge and couldnt see where it should fit in, or how it would make the movie better.
Its a perfect execution.
3. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
PG-13 | 166 min | Western
A mysterious stranger with a harmonica joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad.
Director: Sergio Leone | Stars: Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards
Votes: 348,987 | Gross: $5.32M
I am from Norway, and dont have the same relationship with the old west as all americans, but i do appreciate a good western anyhow. Just like no trekkies have ever been to space.
I have seen all Sergio Leones films, and it just strikes me how this film is such a marble, and it strikes me that this obcene italian who didnt master the language could produce movies like this meant for the Hollywood business. But he sure knows what he is doing.
You can see the progress in his talent through the "Dollars" - triology, and for me, this is his western climax. Like i said in other comments, its not very important where/when a movie is shot. That is essentially just the background for the characters that are going to develop and tell us a story. This is such a fantastic tale, and the cast is perfect. All the mains and how the interact with each other, the chemistry, its brilliant acting, nonetheless. Amazing how this italian could instruct in such a way without mastering the language properly.
The story its more or less a classic tale, but the devil is in the details in this movie. For each viewing i get amazed by all the details Sergio Leone gives this picture. Before the green screen times, this is a top notch production design.
All in all the best western made to date, and unfortunatley, we will never see anything like this again. Not because i dont belive filmmakers as gifted as Leone will emerge sometime, if there isnt someone out there allready, but cinema has changed, and this movie follows a pattern, pace and perspective that has changed since the 60s. Change is not a bad thing. Every year there is a few films that really catches me, but something like OUaTitW, we will for sure never see again, so for those of you who havent seen it, you owe it to yourself. But last caution, i saw it a couple of times as a youth and i was 23 before i realized what magic i was really witnessing
