My Little List Of Horrors: A Guide For Halloween Movie-Watching
This list contains some of my favorite Horror films. I've seen every movie on the list. I've also omitted MANY good horror films. Some were omitted be because they were more on the fringe of the genre(Monster Squad, Shaun of the Dead, Highway to Hell, FIre in the Sky, Etc), others were omitted because I just didn't enjoy them as much. Hopefully, you'll enjoy this list and be able to use it as a rental guide this Halloween season. Thanks for reading. I think I could recommend every movie on the list. Here's a long list of omitted films(most just didn't make the cut - a small number3-4 of them I haven't seen, but are on my watchlist - some of these are good films): Angel Heart, Dreamscape Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2('85), The Last Exorcism, Audition, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, An American Werewolf in London, Carriers, The Proposition, Basket Case, The Haunting in Conneticut, Piranha '10, Aliens(more of sci-fi, but included original) Army of Darkness(the only evil dead i left out)SLeepwalkers, Sleepaway Camp, Ravenous, Bad Taste, Firestarter, Arachnophobia, Hatchet 2, Infestation, Dead Snow, Timber Falls, The Dead Zone, Flatliners, Midnight Meat Train, Blood Creek, Slither, Dead Ringers, Screamers, Tremors, The Sixth Sense, I spit on Your Grave(orig), I spit on Your grave('10), A Serbian Film, Shaun of the Dead, ALL OF THE SAW FILMS, Last House on the Left(orig), Last House on the Left(remake), Dawn of the Dead, [REC], My Bloody Valentine(remake), A Tale of Two Sisters, Fire In The Sky, Crazies('10), Teeth, Henry:Portrait of the Serial Killer, Beyond Re-Animator, Bride of Re-Animator, Bad Leutinant(sp?), Demons, Horror of Dracula, Dagon, Nightbreed, Pet Semetary 2, The Prowler, Frankenstein Unbound, Nightwatch, Lord of Illusions, Martyrs, The Fury, Cronos, Rampage, Frogs, Shocker, Spiral, The Bride, Wolfen, The Puppet Masters, ETC, Etc, etc... There were even some choices from fine directors that didn't make the cut... some of the living dead series is not on here, Michael Mann's' The Keep and Brian DePalma's Raising Cain didn't make the cut - and I love those directors. I wanted the list to feature straight forward horror films. I wanted every film on the list to have that 'scary' element, and not depend on shock/turture, or some gimmick(I'm sure I left in some biased exceptions). Hope you enjoy - let me know.

- DirectorTobe HooperStarsJoBeth WilliamsHeather O'RourkeCraig T. NelsonA family's home is haunted by a host of demonic ghosts.A classic from the 80's is boosted by some fine direction and acting. Has some genuinely scary moments, but really this is the whole package. My Score - 8.5
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsWilliam KattKay LenzGeorge WendtA troubled writer moves into a haunted house after inheriting it from his aunt. One of the least scary films on the list, but it gets big points for originality and fun. My Score - 7
- DirectorJoe DanteStarsDee WallacePatrick MacneeDennis DuganAfter a bizarre and near deadly encounter with a serial killer, a television newswoman is sent to a remote mountain resort whose residents may not be what they seem. The Howling is a creepy werewolf movie with a dash of humor, and one of the best transformation scenes in this sub-genre. Highly recommended. Creepy music. Good choice for Halloween. My Score - 7.5
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsAdrienne BarbeauJamie Lee CurtisJanet LeighAn unearthly fog rolls into a small coastal town exactly 100 years after a ship mysteriously sank in its waters.Unfairly criticized little gem from John Carpenter. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorFred DekkerStarsJason LivelyTom AtkinsSteve MarshallAlien brain parasites, entering humans through the mouth, turn their host into a killing zombie. Some teenagers start to fight against them.Loved this one for it's homage to the 50's horror flicks. Has some humor, gore, and the occasional scare. Great one-liners too, "The good news is your dates are here - the bad news is they're dead".:) My Score - 8
- DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert EnglundTeenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.Nice try on the remake, but the original here has good scare value, and good music too. My Score - 8
- DirectorSean S. CunninghamStarsBetsy PalmerAdrienne KingJeannine TaylorA group of teenage camp counselors attempt to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer. This edged its' way onto the list for many different reasons. The music, the scare value, and the fact that it really kick-started the early 80's horror surge. My Score - 5
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsBetsy PalmerAmy SteelJohn FureyFive years after the events of the first film, a summer camp next to the infamous Camp Crystal Lake is preparing to open, but the legend of Jason is weighing heavy on the proceedings. The best of the series, and one of the most under-rated scary films of all-time. The plot twists turned-off some, but I found the sheer scare value and improvement in production values over the original made this a good horror-flick. My Score - 7
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims. So good that I'm very hesitant when it comes to seeing the newest version/prequel. The music is exceptional, the effects were ahead of their time, and the film is genuinely scary. The story is interesting and the acting is top notch. My Score - 8.5
- DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid ArquetteA year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a masked killer who targets her and her friends by using scary movies as part of a deadly game.A really solid entry - especially after 1988 when horror quality went to pot. My Score - 7.5
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsOliver ReedSamantha EggarArt HindleA man tries to uncover an unconventional psychologist's therapy techniques on his institutionalized wife, amidst a series of brutal murders.Cronenbergs' "The Brood" is aptly titled. Some scenes are etched into my brain. Weird, creepy little "B" entry. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorPeter MedakStarsGeorge C. ScottTrish Van DevereMelvyn DouglasAfter experiencing tragic personal losses, a music professor rents a Seattle mansion, haunted by a slain boy.Proof that you don't need blood, guts, and tits to make a good horror flick. Solid entry. My Score - 8
- DirectorMichael DoughertyStarsAnna PaquinBrian CoxDylan BakerFive interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: an everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.A really good directorial debut here that pays homage to the season. Not very scary, but just so much fun. A new Halloween staple that nears PG-13 all ages access. Trick 'r Treat tackles nearly every Halloween theme, and does it quite successfully. My Score - 7.5
- DirectorOren PeliStarsKatie FeatherstonMicah SloatMark FredrichsAfter moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.Didn't live up to the hype, but still an original and marginally frightening entry into the genre. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorTom HollandStarsChris SarandonWilliam RagsdaleAmanda Bearse"Fright Night" sees a teenager believing that the newcomer in his neighborhood is a vampire. He turns to an actor in a television hosted horror movie show for help to deal with the undead.Another instance of 'who needs a remake'. That's why they make remakes, because no directors(at least not many) are putting out original, scary movies anymore. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEllen SandweissRichard DeManincorFive friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. The definition of camp. This original isn't as good as the sequel, or as scary, but it still deserves to be on the list. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.Evil Dead 2 is a genuinely scary movie. It retains the camp value and humor, but has great editing, great scare value, and good pacing. My fave of the series. My Score - 8
- DirectorGeorge MihalkaStarsPaul KelmanLori HallierNeil AffleckA decades-old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine's Day turns out to be true to legend when a group defies the killer's order and people start turning up dead.Yet another. Every bit as good or better than the remake. SOme suspect acting is made up for with some great death scenes. The full-length re-issue is great. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorJohn GulagerStarsNavi RawatKrista AllenBalthazar GettyPatrons locked inside a bar are forced to fight monsters.Definitely 'B' movie fare, but a fun ride none-the-less. My Score - 6
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.Definitely more of a horror film than any other film in the series. Over-rated, but good. My Score - 7.5
- DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsAdrian PasdarJenny WrightLance HenriksenA small-town farmer's son reluctantly joins a traveling group of vampires after he is bitten by a beautiful drifter. Not scary, but gets points for flying under the radar. Say what you want, but I'd rather watch this than '30 Days of Night', or any film in the 'Twilight Series'. The bar scene alone is worth a My Score - 7
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsA. Michael BaldwinBill ThornburyReggie BannisterA teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber, known only as the Tall Man, who employs a lethal arsenal of unearthly weapons. The first is the best. The original phantasm is creepy, disturbing, and genuinely scary. The concepts were original, and the B-production values only added to the intrigue. My Score - 7.5
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsJames Le GrosReggie BannisterAngus ScrimmMike, now released from a psychiatric hospital, meets with Reggie, and discover his dreams (the events of the original film) are real, and they both journey to find and stop the evil Tall Man from his grim work. Not a bad follow-up. Better than the Hellraiser follow-ups anyway. Phantasm 2 increases the production value over the original, but isn't quite as good as the original IMO. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBruce AbbottBarbara CramptonAfter an odd new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue. Not all that scary, but the gore, the music, and the lead villain are top-notch. The opening credit sequence may be my favorite in the genre. Highly recommended. There is a reason this is one of the biggest cult-classic of all-time. My Score - 8.5
- DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsEllen BurstynMax von SydowLinda BlairWhen a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life. Those involved with this production really cared about what they were putting on tape. Very scary, very disturbing. My Score - 9
- DirectorBrad AndersonStarsDavid CarusoStephen GevedonPaul GuilfoyleTensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back.A really good sleeper in the genre. My Score - 7
- DirectorRobert RodriguezEli RothQuentin TarantinoStarsKurt RussellRose McGowanDanny TrejoQuentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's homage to exploitation double features in the '60s and '70s with two back-to-back cult films that include previews of coming attractions between them.Sure they'll be some argument as to if these are really horror films - to me, there's no question, and they're under-rated horror films at that. Loved what both directors accomplished here. I think the score gets a boost by the two-film, homage format that really hit the mark for me. My Score - 9
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsKodi Smit-McPheeChloë Grace MoretzRichard JenkinsA bullied young boy befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian.IMO this is just as good as the original. My Score - 8
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsKåre HedebrantLina LeanderssonPer RagnarOskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.A great premise and good acting made this an instant classic, and a great foreign entry. My Score - 7.5.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsCécile de FranceMaïwennPhilippe NahonBest friends Marie and Alexia decide to spend a quiet weekend at Alexia's parents' secluded farmhouse. But on the night of their arrival, the girls' idyllic getaway turns into an endless night of horror.Lives up to the title. My Score - 7
- DirectorWes CravenStarsBill PullmanCathy TysonZakes MokaeAn anthropologist goes to Haiti after hearing rumors about a drug used by black magic practitioners to turn people into zombies.Probably the last film to make it on the list. My Score - 5.5
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceLisa BlountJameson ParkerA group of graduate students and scientists uncover an ancient canister in an abandoned church, but when they open the container, they inadvertently unleash a strange liquid and an evil force on all humanity. This marked the end of an era for me. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsThomas JaneMarcia Gay HardenLaurie HoldenA freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.I did NOT expect to like this movie. It wasn't until the social turmoil of the middle of the film, and then again at the shocking end, when I realized I'd just seen a decent horror film. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorAdam GreenStarsKane HodderJoel David MooreDeon RichmondWhen a group of tourists in a New Orleans haunted swamp tour find themselves stranded in the wilderness, their evening of fun and spooks turns into a horrific nightmare.Green is an up-n-coming horror director. One of the few. This is not a great movie, but it's a fun entry with some good gore and fine editing. My Score - 6
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyNaomie HarrisChristopher EcclestonFour weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.I thought this film got a little bogged down in the last third, but it has equal doses of scare, gore, and disturbing moments. My Score - 7.

Watch out for Jerome Dillon's music in future horror films. This one surprised me. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.Hands down the scariest movie ever made. Put a novice in a dark room, alone, turn it on, and possibly scar them for life. Great music, great direction, great villain, great opening, great everything. The only horror "10" on this list and of all my 2800 ratings. My Score - 10
- DirectorRick RosenthalStarsJamie Lee CurtisDonald PleasenceCharles CyphersWhile Dr. Loomis hunts for Michael Myers, a traumatized Laurie is rushed to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, and The Shape is not far behind her.So funny how this film gets bashed when it's scarier and better than any of the Halloween, CHainsaw, or Nightmare on Elm Street remakes. It's not great, but it does have geniune scare value. My Score - 6.5
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl HardmanA ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States.Amazing how this film is so stripped down, yet so effective. - DirectorDan O'BannonStarsClu GulagerJames KarenDon CalfaWhen two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies. An under-rated horror flick. There are moments in the first half of this movie that have you laughing and turning away at the same moment. Highly original take on the zombie storyline, and good music and gore. My Score - 7

- DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsHarvey KeitelGeorge ClooneyJuliette LewisTwo criminals and their hostages unknowingly seek temporary refuge in a truck stop populated by vampires, with chaotic results. Will always be one of the most original horror films for being over-the-top, and for it's mid-film 180 degree turn from an interesting story about two criminals on the run, to a furious vampire action flick. Quentin's best performance(he usually stinks and knows it). Clooney is great. My Score - 8.5
- DirectorJoe JohnstonStarsBenicio Del ToroAnthony HopkinsEmily BluntUpon his return to his ancestral homeland, an American man is bitten and subsequently cursed by a werewolf.I thought it deserved the academy award for best make-up. - DirectorMark PellingtonStarsRichard GereLaura LinneyDavid EigenbergA reporter is drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate a series of strange events, including psychic visions and the appearance of bizarre entities.I think this is another one of those 'scariest films of the last decade' movies.
