1. Almost Famous (2000)

R | 122 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

90 Metascore

A high-school boy in the early 1970s is given the chance to write a story for Rolling Stone magazine about an up-and-coming rock band as he accompanies them on their concert tour.

Director: Cameron Crowe | Stars: Billy Crudup, Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Frances McDormand

Votes: 293,301 | Gross: $32.53M

Cameron Crowe's beautifully done work about his life as a rock journalist definitely is a great reason for music enthusiasts to consider this as an amazing film. Those that are not into music as much still can find a great sense of story and depth in this movie.

2. High Fidelity (2000)

R | 113 min | Comedy, Drama, Music

79 Metascore

Rob, a record store owner and compulsive list maker, recounts his top five breakups, including the one in progress.

Director: Stephen Frears | Stars: John Cusack, Iben Hjejle, Todd Louiso, Jack Black

Votes: 189,724 | Gross: $27.29M

Whether Cusack's references are true to his own life as his character in this film is questionable but it is one of those music based films that makes a lot of good sources for new music and is charming to where you instantly start thinking about your own top 5 lists.

3. Walk the Line (2005)

PG-13 | 136 min | Biography, Drama, Music

72 Metascore

A chronicle of country music legend Johnny Cash's life, from his early days on an Arkansas cotton farm to his rise to fame with Sun Records in Memphis, where he recorded alongside Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins.

Director: James Mangold | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin, Robert Patrick

Votes: 265,785 | Gross: $119.52M

This is where it's hard to choose between this film and Ray because it boils down to your own personal taste in music. I always have enjoyed this one. Joaquin Phoenix may not be the only person to play the role of "The Man in Black" Johnny Cash but damn he does a great job with it along with the talented vocal work.

4. Ray (I) (2004)

PG-13 | 152 min | Biography, Drama, Music

73 Metascore

The story of the life and career of the legendary rhythm and blues musician Ray Charles, from his humble beginnings in the South, where he went blind at age seven, to his meteoric rise to stardom during the 1950s and 1960s.

Director: Taylor Hackford | Stars: Jamie Foxx, Regina King, Kerry Washington, Clifton Powell

Votes: 157,372 | Gross: $75.33M

The life of Ray Charles instantly will draw audiences in. I loved this movie from the get go and definitely did usher in the new wave of biopic films about musicians. Like I said, it was hard to choose this or Walk The Line but again, boils down to taste. Jamie Foxx is a huge surprise having the part nailed.

5. Great Balls of Fire! (1989)

PG-13 | 108 min | Biography, Drama, Music

49 Metascore

The life and career of wildly controversial rock 'n' roll star Jerry Lee Lewis.

Director: Jim McBride | Stars: Dennis Quaid, Winona Ryder, John Doe, Stephen Tobolowsky

Votes: 18,884 | Gross: $13.74M

Going back, this is a good music based film due to Dennis Quaid's energetic performance on and off stage as Jerry Lee Louis. It opens your mind to the idea that not all musicians' life is happy go lucky. It shows a dark side at points that keeps you interested for the drama.

6. The Filth and the Fury (2000)

R | 108 min | Documentary, Biography, Music

82 Metascore

A film about the career of the notorious punk rock band, the Sex Pistols.

Director: Julien Temple | Stars: Paul Cook, Steve Jones, John Lydon, Glen Matlock

Votes: 6,206 | Gross: $0.61M

Our first real film on this list all about one of the first punk bands in the UK, The Sex Pistols. Like the title says, they were filthy and furious at everything. If you want a good rock history 101 kind of film and watch some surprising elements, The Filth and the Fury will deliver.

7. Crossroads (1986)

R | 99 min | Drama, Music, Mystery

55 Metascore

A wannabe blues-guitar virtuoso finds an old blues player and hopes he can teach him a long-lost song by legendary musician Robert Johnson.

Director: Walter Hill | Stars: Ralph Macchio, Joe Seneca, Jami Gertz, Joe Morton

Votes: 17,649 | Gross: $5.84M

Ralph Macchio is best known for his role as Daniel Larusso in The Karate Kid trilogy but during this time he had a movie all about unleashing the Blues. Ralph as far as I know played some in the film but in the final battle, it was Steve Vai (virtuoso guitarist). Still this has a great story and will teach a little bit of history about the blues' beginnings.

8. Sid and Nancy (1986)

R | 112 min | Biography, Drama, Music

76 Metascore

The relationship between Sid Vicious, bassist for British punk group Sex Pistols, and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen is portrayed.

Director: Alex Cox | Stars: Gary Oldman, Chloe Webb, David Hayman, Debby Bishop

Votes: 34,671 | Gross: $2.83M

Ok, so if you didn't see The Filth and the Fury, I recommend that first to give more of a history of the music. This is more about the relationship between Sid Vicious and Nancy. Not a lot of reference to the music in the band but a good movie nevertheless. I love Gary Oldman and he always puts everything he has into each role, so him playing the brash Vicious is no exception.

9. Hendrix (2000 TV Movie)

R | 100 min | Biography, Drama, Music

Biography of Jimi Hendrix perhaps the single most groundbreaking guitarist in the history of rock and roll. Examines Hendrix's life and career both on and off the stage.

Director: Leon Ichaso | Stars: Wood Harris, Billy Zane, Dorian Harewood, Christian Potenza

Votes: 1,072

I love Jimi Hendrix, being a musician he is a total influence over the guitar world. This movie however doesn't do justice as much as it could have. It is a TV movie and maybe that is why, just didn't feel it reached its potential. However, that does not go without saying the movie is a good watch for those not sure about Hendrix's background.

10. Metal: A Headbanger's Journey (2005)

R | 96 min | Documentary, Music

73 Metascore

An examination of the heavy metal music subculture that tries to explain why, despite the longevity and popularity of the genre, fans are marginalized and ridiculed for their passion.

Directors: Sam Dunn, Scot McFadyen, Jessica Joy Wise | Stars: Tom Araya, Gavin Baddeley, Blasphemer, Randy Blythe

Votes: 12,483

This documentary deserves a medal, Samuel Dunn is truly knowledgeable about the history and current times of heavy metal. All musicians and avid listeners need to use this to take notes. It goes on every tangent, meeting with rock/metal legends Bruce Dickinson, the late Ronnie James Dio (RIP), Dee Snider, etc.
