One of the pre-eminent divas of post-war German cinema, Hannelore Elsner (born 'Elstner') was the consummate actress: a gifted and versatile performer with a penchant for intense roles, often as emancipated, strong-willed women. A Bavarian engineer's daughter (her father died of tuberculosis when she was eight), 'Hanni' first took acting classes in Munich where she also debuted on stage at the Kammerspiele and the Kleine Komödie. She appeared on screen from 1959, initially in teenage melodramas and 'Paukerfilms', later featuring as a regular guest star on TV in procedural crime dramas like Isar 12 (1961) and Stahlnetz (1958) . From the late 60's, Elsner alternated 'sexy roles' (such as her native American maiden in Christoph Kolumbus oder Die Entdeckung Amerikas (1969) ) with more demanding fare. Under the direction of such prominent film makers as Wolfgang Staudte, Edgar Reitz and Alf Brustellin, she proved her diverse range, headlining, respectively, in the satirical caper comedy Die Herren mit der weissen Weste (1970), the period biopic Der Schneider von Ulm (1978) and the hard-luck drama Der Sturz (1979). Among many other notable big screen credits were the romantic drama Der grüne Vogel (1980) (directed by István Szabó) and the delightful Otto Sander farce Wer spinnt denn da, Herr Doktor? (1982). Elsner's powerful tour-de-force acting showcase Die Unberührbare (2000) won her the first of two German film awards as Best Actress, as well as a Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival. A patrician beauty well into middle age, she captured a large fan base on the small screen as star of Lady Cop (1994), a role which developed from two previous guest spots as a Chief Inspector in the long-running police series Tatort (1970).
She was married and divorced twice. Her subsequent life partner (from 1999) was Günter Blamberger, a professor of German philology. Her memoirs, entitled "Im Überschwang - Aus meinem Leben", appeared in 2011. Hannelore Elsner died after a long battle with cancer on April 21 2019 at the age of 76.- Actress

After finishing "Realschule" in Berlin-Steglitz, she started to work as a dentists' assistant. She worked only one year as a dentists' assistant, but during this time she also worked as a hostess. But now, she enjoys her work as an actress and it always makes her happy to give something to the audience.
2005 was the year of her breakthrough as an actress: she began to play the role of Lisa Plenske in the most successful German daily soap-opera ever. She left the series after 365 episodes. After her leaving, the majority of the audience turned aside from "Verliebt in Berlin", the series became rather unsuccessful. More than seven million German people watched the 365th episode of "Verliebt in Berlin", therefore it was a profitable production for German TV channel Sat1.
In 2006 Neldel was "best European soap actress" and got the Rose d'Or (Golden Rose) Award.
She is often considered as a sex-symbol , too - but she always refuses this kind of expression. She is also considered as a girls' girl: that means the majority of her fans are women.
She never talks about her private life, one can never read home-stories about her, as she says, she wants to keep her private life.
Nowadays she is one of the most successful actresses in Germany, she has many fans also in France, since her series "Verliebt in Berlin" was broadcast there as well: it was the most successful German series in France ever. - Actress

Ingrid Steeger was the third child of Kurt and Käthe Stengert, who already had son Udo and daughter Jutta. After school Ingrid worked as a secretary when she was discovered by photographer Frank Quade. Soon pinup photos of her appeared in numerous men's magazines, especially "SEXY", where even today she is the girl with the most cover shots. She was elected Miss Filmfestival (Berlin 1968) and soon was into movies herself. Her early films were cheap sex movies, mostly of the "Report" type. Not wanting to use her real name--because her father objected--and not yet having decided on a stage name, her first movie billed her as "Ingrid Stengel".
Her "very" first movie deserves a special mention. Before the age of video, porn films for home viewing were Super 8 shorts and Ingrid starred uncredited in one of those, Die perverse Herrin und ihre Opfer (1969) ("The Perverted Mistress and Her Victims"). This movie had long been forgotten when, at the height of her career, producer Gerd Wasmund (aka Mike Hunter) reissued it on video, retitled "Ingrid Steeger's Porno Action". She went to court to stop distribution and won. The same thing happened again when Beate Uhse distributed a collection of old naturalist shots of Ingrid, titled "Ingrid - blutjung und verführerisch" ("Ingrid--Youngblooded and Tempting"). Again she had to go to court to stop distribution. In addition to her movies, she was given small but serious roles in TV productions, where--strange as it might seem--nobody seemed to know about her sex films. Helmut Holger, one of her colleagues, suggested her to director Michael Pfleghar, who was casting for a new TV comedy series called Klimbim (1973), a German version of the American show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (1967). This was her breakthrough. The public loved her in her new role as "Klimbim-clown", and decent pictures of her appeared in women's and teen's magazines. The readers of Germany's biggest teen magazine, "BRAVO", awarded her the "Otto", its top award, four times. (1975: Bronze, 1976 & 1977: Silver, 1978: Gold). It seemed that nobody could stop her now.
She followed "Klimbim" with Zwei himmlische Töchter (1978) ("Two Heavenly Daughters"), another successful comedy series, but flopped badly with Susi (1980) a third one, all directed by Pfleghar. From then on it was downhill for her. She went to France to live with her actor-friend Jean-Paul Zehnacker, but they soon separated. Ingrid returned to Germany to become a mature, serious actress, in the vein of her idols Shirley MacLaine and Goldie Hawn, but the public wouldn't let her. The same public that once had forgiven her sex-film past would not forget "Klimbim", though the series hadn't been shown for ages. Nearly every article on her began with "Ingrid Steeger, ex-clown ("Klimbim"), will ...".Michael Phlegar couldn't help her, either; he ran into severe personal problems and committed suicide a few years later. Though Ingrid can act, her few serious roles were doomed from the start. In recent years she has concentrated on theater and played mostly boulevard comedies. In 1995 she starred in the Karl May summer theater in Bad Segeberg as "Cowgirl Mona".
Her private life has been rather chaotic, too. Her marriages, liaisons and affairs are well chronicled and always mentioned when she is seen with somebody new. When she first entered films, she married cameraman Lothar E. Stickelbrucks in 1973, but they divorced two years later. She had an affair with director Michael Pfleghar, though neither one admitted it at that time (it was rumored that she even wanted to leave Germany to go to Hollywood with him). Next was Peter Koenecke, who organized safari tours in Kenya. They planned to marry in 1979 and move to Kenya together. She was even said to have learned Swahili. Next was French actor Jean-Paul Zehnacker, who starred with her in "Susi". She moved to live with him in France, but returned to Germany in 1984 when love turned to friendship. After him came Lothar Köllner (1985-86), owner of a hi-fi shop in Murnau, and she even obtained her driver's license at the age of 38 to see him more often. Then came film director Dieter Wedel (1988-91), whom she shared with another woman. At least, he starred her in his TV series Wilder Westen inclusive (1988) and Der große Bellheim (1993), giving her a chance for some serious acting.
Then she met Tom LaBlanc, an American Indian of the Dakota tribe, at a World Uranium hearing and they got married in a rush in August 1992. Nobody gave them much of a chance, because he didn't speak German and she didn't speak much English. Most photos show them side by side, Tom having to wear Indian clothing with feather headdress for the photographers, holding Ingrid's dachshund and looking very uneasy. Nevertheless, the press never accepted him. The couple was always referred to as "Ingrid and her Indian". Soon he was spending most of his time in America, fighting for the rights of his people while Ingrid was left at home. They divorced in October 1995.
Next was Swiss actor Bernd Seebacher. Immediately following her divorce from LaBlanc, she fell in love with Bernd and August 1996 was set as the date for the wedding. The couple was shown in magazines, choosing rings and posing in their wedding dresses, but at the last possible moment the wedding was postponed. Unfortunately, Ingrid had already sold her apartment in Munich to live with her husband in Switzerland. Now that she remained a foreigner, she had to leave the country. Her only true friend in all those years was her dachshund Felix. There is scarcely one private photo of Ingrid without her dog. When Felix was killed in France by a hit-and-run driver, she mourned a long time and finally got Felix II. This one even went on stage with her in "Champagner-Complex" and was said to have been the matchmaker when she met Dieter Wedel. When Felix II had to be put to sleep in 1995, she didn't want another one, but Wedel kept up the tradition by presenting her with a young dachshund called Lucky Luke.- She was a nurse when she started a career as a porn actress in 1999, when she was 29 years old, after posing naked in the German nude magazine Coupé. Under the stage name Gina Wild, she was also internationally known, and she twice won a Venus Award, an important European pornography award, the first time in 1999, in the category of best new star, and the second time in 2000, for best German actress. She caused quite a stir when she participated in a gangbang movie, in which she had sexual relations with more than thirty men. In total, according to the Internet Adult Film Database (IAFD), she starred in ten pornographic films.
In 2001, Wild retired from the porn industry and focused on developing a mainstream acting career. Since then she has starred in a variety of German television series, such as TV Total, In Aller Freundschaft and Wer Wird Millionär? After being recognized by a fan, Wild admitted in 2003 that in addition to acting she also worked as a prostitute in a brothel in Frankfurt am Main, but she added that she didn't do it for the money, but because t she was addicted to sex. In 2005, she sold the rights to the artist and brand name Gina Wild, with which she tried to shake off her porn past. Her manager is her former husband, with whom she still lives on friendly terms. She lives alternately in Hamburg and Frankfurt. - Actress

Greta Garbo was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson on September 18, 1905, in Stockholm, Sweden, to Anna Lovisa (Johansdotter), who worked at a jam factory, and Karl Alfred Gustafsson, a laborer. She was fourteen when her father died, which left the family destitute. Greta was forced to leave school and go to work in a department store. The store used her as a model in its newspaper ads. She had no film aspirations until she appeared in short advertising film at that same department store while she was still a teenager. Erik A. Petschler, a comedy director, saw the film and gave her a small part in his Luffar-Petter (1922). Encouraged by her own performance, she applied for and won a scholarship to a Swedish drama school. While there she appeared in at least one film, En lyckoriddare (1921). Both were small parts, but it was a start. Finally famed Swedish director Mauritz Stiller pulled her from the drama school for the lead role in The Saga of Gösta Berling (1924). At 18 Greta was on a roll.
Following The Joyless Street (1925) both Greta and Stiller were offered contracts with MGM, and her first film for the studio was the American-made Torrent (1926), a silent film in which she didn't have to speak a word of English. After a few more films, including The Temptress (1926), Love (1927) and A Woman of Affairs (1928), Greta starred in Anna Christie (1930) (her first "talkie"), which not only gave her a powerful screen presence but also garnered her an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress (she didn't win). Later that year she filmed Romance (1930), which was somewhat of a letdown, but she bounced back in 1931, landing another lead role in Mata Hari (1931), which turned out to be a major hit.
Greta continued to give intense performances in whatever was handed her. The next year she was cast in what turned out to be yet another hit, Grand Hotel (1932). However, it was in MGM's Anna Karenina (1935) that she gave what some consider the performance of her life. She was absolutely breathtaking in the role as a woman torn between two lovers and her son. Shortly afterwards, she starred in the historical drama Queen Christina (1933) playing the title character to great acclaim. She earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the romantic drama Camille (1936), again playing the title character. Her career suffered a setback the following year in Conquest (1937), which was a box office disaster. She later made a comeback when she starred in Ninotchka (1939), which showcased her comedic side. It wasn't until two years later she made what was to be her last film, Two-Faced Woman (1941), another comedy. But the film drew controversy and was condemned by the Catholic Church and other groups and was a box office failure, which left Garbo shaken.
After World War II Greta, by her own admission, felt that the world had changed perhaps forever and she retired, never again to face the camera. She would work for the rest of her life to perpetuate the Garbo mystique. Her films, she felt, had their proper place in history and would gain in value. She abandoned Hollywood and moved to New York City. She would jet-set with some of the world's best-known personalities such as Aristotle Onassis and others. She spent time gardening and raising flowers and vegetables. In 1954 Greta was given a special Oscar for past unforgettable performances. She even penned her biography in 1990.
On April 15, 1990, Greta died of natural causes in New York and with her went the "Garbo Mystique". She was 84.- Sara-Lena Arnoldsdotter is known for The New Land (1972).

Christiane Hörbiger descended from a famous dynasty of thespians, one of three siblings born to the Austrian acting couple Paula Wessely and Attila Hörbiger. She was also a niece of the equally renowned character actor Paul Hörbiger. Educated in Vienna, Christiane graduated from a commercial school with a diploma and seemed to be destined for an apprenticeship as a confectioner. When that fell through, her parents had little choice but to grant her wish to become an actress. She duly made her film debut at the age of 16, billed as Christel Wessely-Hörbiger, co-starring with her father in the bucolic Heimatfilm Der Major und die Stiere (1955). A brief attendance at the Max Reinhardt Academy then followed and was rounded off with dance and singing tuition under the auspices of Alma Seidler. From 1959 to 1966, Hörbiger developed her acting skills on the classical stage, first in Heidelberg and later as an ensemble member of the famed Vienna Burgtheater. In addition to guest appearances in Munich and Salzburg, she had regular engagements at the Pfauenbühne in Zurich between 1967 and 1985, in plays by, among others, Schiller, Molières and Shakespeare. Her wide repertoire on stage and screen included anything from unhappy lovers to prim widows, from careworn or depressed mothers to elegant, wealthy dowagers or down-to-earth spouses, and, latterly, grandmothers.
Hörbiger's first breakthrough on the screen came via television, co-starring with Willy Millowitsch in the series Donaug'schichten (1965) (as the daughter of a cook and amateur sleuth involved in various criminal cases). Her role as a countess in Das Erbe der Guldenburgs (1987), a sprawling family saga sometimes described as Germany's answer to Dallas (1978), introduced her to an even wider audience. She was also the eponymous heroine of Julia - Eine ungewöhnliche Frau (1999), as a Viennese barrister who takes a job as a provincial district judge with resulting consequences to both her professional and private life. Her few big screen appearances included the Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated satire Schtonk (1992), which lampooned the Hitler Diaries hoax of 1983 and was a nod to Charles Chaplin's The Great Dictator (1940). For her role as Herman Goering's willful (but fictitious) grandniece Freya von Hepp, Hörbiger was awarded a Bambi Film Prize in 1992.
Until her retirement in 2019, Christiane Hörbiger continued to make prolific appearances in TV films and as an occasional series guest star. She was often referred to as the preeminent Grand Dame of German television. In 2003, Hörbiger became a founding member of the Deutsche Filmakademie. A strong advocate of racial tolerance and equality, she was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to Austria that same year. Hörbiger was married twice: her first husband (divorced) was the director Wolfgang Glück, her second the Swiss journalist Rolf R. Bigler. Until her passing in November 2022, she had resided variously in Zurich and in the spa town of Baden bei Wien.- Actress
