Quiltys' Recommended Reading:

Little Miss Strange - Joanna Rose: [link]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0684847418[/link] From Quilty - "Sarajean is a child of the 60s, perfectly at home in a place where there are no real homes, no last names, and no commitments to the future. The story begins when Sarajean is a pre-schooler living with Jimmy Henry, a dysfunctional Vietnam Vet whom she accepts as her father. Her mother disappeared long ago. Sarajean successfully scams and scavenges her way through childhood, overcoming such obstacles as Jimmy Henry's heroin habit. By age five, she's finding her own way to the "free school;" by age ten, she's smoking pot and beginning to think about sex. The author accomplishes a remarkable task with this book: when Sarajean is very young, the writing is deliberate and child-like without being stilted or forced. As Sarajean matures, the writing deepens, accurately reflecting the thoughts and fantasies of a young girl on the verge of womanhood."

Sandman - J. Robert Janes: [link]http://www.amazon.com/Sandman-Jean-Louis-St-Cyr-Hermann-Investigation/dp/B0043GUX9A[/link] From Quilty - "The body of an eleven-year-old convent schoolgirl was discovered behind the clay pigeon shoot in the Bois des Boulognes. At first the victim is thought to be the orphan heiress to a vast aviation fortune. Then it is discovered that the body, dressed in the heiress's clothing, is actually that of her best friend. Four schoolgirls have been murdered in the last five weeks, apparently by a serial killer whom the newspapers have dubbed the Sandman. Has he claimed another victim? And where is the missing heiress? If you like who-dunnits, this is a good one, with an interesting setting and a cast of colorful characters. The investigators -- Jean-Louis St.-Cyr and Hermann Kohler, one French, the other a "good" Nazi -- are rather typical cops trying to do typical police work in occupied Paris with its food shortages, nightly blackouts and the political machinations of the Nazi regime. Then there's the priest defrocked for deflowering young girls; the former Nazi officer, a painter and lover of little girls, who has gone insane from his own cold-bloodedness; the prostitute who dresses up like a schoolgirl to be 'violated' by her customers; and Sister Celine, who wants to be sure (albeit through very strange methods) that the girls under her tutelage rid themselves of sexual thoughts."

HHH" "From CVMC - An over-the-top social commentary about the mindless violence that is perpetuated on impressionable youth by television.

Lorenz (Carla Gravina) has three young children who are victims of a media who wishes to turn out terrorists. She contends with her monstrous offspring and student revolts until she can't take it anymore. Her two young sons and daughter reek havoc on every babysitter that is brought into the house, burning a tattoo on one of them, locking the other in a closet.

Lorenz, an emotionless women, takes matters into her own hands by planting a bomb in the factory of her estranged husband and handling her sadistic son in her own way by the end of the film. The director attempts to illustrate the effect that Big Brother has on the lives of people and how they are subjected to behavioral conditioning beyond their control. Directed by Salvatore Samperi with score by Ennio Morricone.

From CVMC -

Here is the celluloid version of the childhood autobiography of Astrid Lindgren: the author of Pippi Longstocking. Before the days of television, Nintendo and indulgent parents, children, believe it or not, actually had to entertain themselves.

Lindgren portrays this rather realistically, weaves a tale of three girls (Ellen Demerus, Anna Sahlin, Linda Bergstrom) and three boys (Crispin Dickson Wendenius, Henrik Larsson, Harald Lonnbro) and the things they do to have fun during a Summer in their pre-WWII town: Noisy Village. A real slice-of-life!

A celebration of imagination and non-arthritic joints!

And don't miss the sequel....

H" "From oOgiandujaOo (United Kingdom) -

Riveting moral portrait of post-war Japan

I've just seen this film in a rare cinema screening. It's difficult to comment on this film. There are so many disparate elements and themes. Perhaps what the director was trying to do was create a portrait of a society in a time and a place that was antithetical to love. How can the young love of our two heroes (Shun and Nanami) be succoured by a society that has embraced the commodification of sexuality (including the sexual commodification of children), and rigid glacial patriarchalism. The ending of the movie underlines this (but I won't give it away).

Some of the absurd constipated behaviour of the Japanese is on full display here, Shun is so up-tight that he has to go to classes and be taught to laugh. Daisuke a high-school friend of Nanami shows a film in his university film club about his love for another girl at his high school, how he never managed to express it or have it recognised. It seems he barely even spoke to the object of his affection. He says that if she had just been beautiful that he would have been able to find another love. But by all accounts he was much more deeply attracted to her. They say that one's first love is always the strongest. For Daisuke it was so strong that it becomes hollow and obsessional, he will never love again.

Of course the beauty of this movie and its inventiveness marks it out as a very interesting film. Some of the shots are amazingly beautiful, their composition not entirely relevant to proceedings, almost cinematic asides (urban vistas, and graveyard scenes). It has a sense of atmosphere on a par with Rivette and Godard, and the film is much more dense and complex than films made by those two directors, or to be more accurate presents a portrait of a Japanese society profoundly more multi-textured than the France of the New Wave. A Japan at the crossroads between tradition and modernity both spiritually, intellectually, and socially.

At least in parts this movie is ambivalent, it portrays first love as foolish, obsessional and shallow and it also is sympathetic to the sadoerotic subculture (at least in places). But that's why it's so good, nothing is fed to you on a plate.

The trials and travails of the Nakaoka family as they endure the horrific atom bomb of Hiroshima.

Stars: Ren Kobayashi, Yuriko Ishida, Kiichi Nakai, Akiyoshi Nakao

Votes: 88

H" "from CVMC -

The story begins on August 4, 1945, with the everyday life of a boy named Gen, his younger brother Shinji, their father Daikichi, elder sister Eiko, and pregnant mother Kimie, during the end of World War II.

The beginning of the plot mainly focuses on the Nakaoka family's struggle to afford food ration cards and other items due to food shortages throughout Japan, and Gen and Shinji try and help the family by working tirelessly in the wheat fields, or attempting to find food to feed their pregnant mother Kimie.

On the night of August 5, the family is awakened by an air raid and take refuge in their bomb shelter, though, after some time, it is clear this is yet another false alarm. During the ordeal, Gen's father Daikichi states his fears concerning the constant passing of enemy aircraft with no following attack and his suspicion that Hiroshima is being saved for something special.

The next morning August 6th upon reaching his school, Gen takes notice of a passing B29 aircraft and discusses with a female friend the oddity of its passing over the city with no air raid siren warning accompanying it, as was often common. Suddenly, Gen, his friend, and his family are all blinded by a flash of white light which is then closely followed by the explosion, flinging Gen underneath a ruined wall, throwing his mother off the balcony, and burying his father and siblings under the house.

The immediate horrors of the bomb are all around them: including the death of his friend, the enormous destruction of the city, and the sight of deformed and extremely burned people wandering the streets. The rest of his family, apart from him and his mother, are trapped under the ruins of the house. They can't get them out, and have to flee, leaving them to die. Soon after, Gen and his mother find a safer area, where his mother is about to give birth. Gen tries to find a midwife but is unable to and aids in the birth himself.

By August 8, Gen finds that soldiers have entered the city and are distributing rice, but he gets there too late, only to find them collecting corpses and burning the dead. A fireman's hat in the ruins becomes a signature part of his character. Gen finds a ration storehouse containing rice, and after digging he finds that some have not been seared by the heat of the blast and takes them to his mother to eat along with some fresh vegetables. They name the baby Tomoko, meaning friend, as Gen hopes she will be surrounded by many friends all her life, and soon after Gen discovers his hair has started to fall out, and remembering a stricken soldier with similar ailments he panics, only to be reassured by his mother.

In the shack, Gen, his mother, and baby sister eat as little of the rationed rice as possible in an attempt to save it, when a small boy, Ryuta, attempts to steal the rice. Gen stops him and brings him back only to be shocked by his physical resemblance to his younger brother Shinji. After speaking with the boy and feeding him, Gen and his mother learn he is orphaned and decide to keep him with them, Gen's mother stating that she would wish for someone to mind after Shinji in a similar situation.

The following day, Gen and Ryuta head out to find food as their sister is suffering from malnutrition due to lack of milk, and are picked up by a man from out of town who takes them to tend his sick brother for 3-yen a day, another bomb survivor. The two accept the job and find the man they will care for is crude, rude, and angry, having been rejected by his family. Despite his harshness, the boys decide to stay and Gen even spends the night with him, inspiring him to paint once again. Due to their commitment (where others hired to care for him gave up or failed), the man's brother pays them 100 Yen, and the boys head out to find milk quickly, in hopes of bringing it back to feed Gen's sister. Unfortunately, they arrive with the milk too late, as Tomoko has already died of malnutrition. In his grief Gen cries out to his father for guidance.

Gen is cheered up by Ryuta who he has come to look upon him as an older brother. Despite hearing that no grass would grow in Hiroshima for seventy years, Gen and Ryuta find that the wheat is starting to grow, and Gen is excited to discover his hair is also growing back. In his new found optimism, Gen remembers the promise he made to Shinji of taking him to the river after school, and so, he builds a new wooden boat, placing a candle on to the top. Two weeks after the bomb, Gen takes Ryuta and his mother to the river, where they light the candle and release the boat, together they watch the flame in the sunset, a symbol meant to express that beyond all terrible experiences, lies hope.

A poignant film, epic in scope and thoroughly entertaining. Don't miss this one.

This charming, family adventure is based on a novel by one of Englands most beloved authors, Edith Nesbit. A group of boys (Erick Sanchez, Jonathan Mendoza, Mariano Manon, Eleazar Gomez, Miguel Angel Segura), roughly seven to eleven years of age, go skinny-dipping in a river near their small Mexican town one afternoon and there find themselves the butt of an old vagabond's practical joke, the man stealing all their clothes from them. Humiliated about having to walk home in the buff, the tykes decide to get even, declare war. Yet, as the generations battle it out, a mutual respect develops, the depth of which is evident once the man has a heart attack during one of his romps with the kids.

Two Jewish brothers, Joseph (Richard Constantini) & Maurice (Paul-Eric Shulmann), approximately thirteen and ten, living during the Nazi occupation in Paris, are smuggled out of the city in a bakery wagon to escape the concentration camp (at the sacrifice of their parents).

They are given instructions to a safe house which happens to be a boy's catholic school. With the priest's help they are hidden in a variety of farm houses. But one day the Nazi's gather all the villagers in a room to search for hidden Jews and deserters, and the boys must lie their way out of the situation.

The younger boy is hung by his feet during the interrigation and the brothers are presented to the Nazi doctor - surprise, the doctor exclaimes them to be Jewish, but the boys insist they from Algeria, and until that is proven they are given jobs in the army kitchen until rescued by the Catholic priest. From Giovanni Caci (United Kingdom) – Finely crafted dark fantasy

I remember watching this movie as a child and being totally enchanted by it, even the obvious English dubbing didn't detract from the quality of the story. It's such a surreal piece, and though a children's fairy tale, often it came across as more of a dark fantasy produced for an older audience, similar in tone to the American film 'Return to Oz', Gerda's stay at the witch's house, and the later scene where she is abducted were rather frightening. As for the snow queen herself, she is depicted as beautiful but more than human powerful female, the stuff of nightmares! Not long after I read the original Hans Christian Handerson tale, and although I enjoyed it I felt the movie to be superior, so if you ever get the chance to see this Finnish masterpiece don't pass it up!

Oedipus Orca is the sequel to La Orca both directed by Visconti and starring Rena Niehaus. In La Orca a high school aged girl played by Niehaus is kidnapped and held for ransom, while the second movie Oedipus Orca is about her life with her family and boyfriend after she returns home. The first film was somewhat controversial and labeled pornographic by some due to its exploitive nudity and sexuality involving a teenage girl.

Oedipus Orca begins with her return home. The exploitive side as the film series continues as she is nude every few minutes. She once again uses sex to her advantage against a family friend. This movie has lots of flashbacks to the first film and deals with her emotional state a lot. The most memorable is when she visits the room she was held captive in and masturbates while recalling having sex with her captor. It makes as strong a statement as I can think of, of how the mind can be twisted by such a situation.

Votes: 1,884

From Hanin XYZ (Beirut) – Art imitates Life, with a touch of Fassbinder...

"My Little Princess", Eva Ionesco's debut film explores the intense relationship between mother & daughter. Although, initially it may sound like a cinematic cliché to go over family dynamics once again, the film offers us a double controversy:

The first being the relationship itself and the fact that the mother (played beautifully by Isabelle Huppert) takes erotic/pornographic photos of her under-aged daughter(Anamaria Vartolomei) and sells them. The second being that these very events happened in the director's actual life and caused a huge spark in France.

The narration explores how these dynamics came to be about and their ultimate unraveling. Aesthetically, the film borrows a lot from R.W Fassbinder, particularly his BDR trilogy and his collaboration with Hanna Schygulla. Huppert's appearance and beautiful designer gowns (most notably Yves Saint-Laurent) pays homage to the 30s and several references have been made to Marlene Dietrich. The problematic of the working woman struggling to survive in a ruthless world has been explored by the German director back then and is repeated by Ionesco today, with emphasis on child abuse.

Also, Huppert's acting never disappoints but Vartolomei was surprisingly brilliant. Her very young age and the salacious material of the text did not deter this great talent from the intense performance she gave. The latter is indeed a gentle reminder of Brook Shields' days in "Pretty Baby" & "The Blue Lagoon".

To sum up, French films are getting more and more controversial, although I had originally expected a gem out of the "New French Extremity" to be included in the Semaine De La Critique De Cannes, this interesting piece of work is satisfying enough.

From KawaiiTikal (Montreal, Canada) – Ordinary, yet tremendous...

Jacquou le Croquant is a good production that is unfortunately too long and too slow. Some parts are unnecessary and could have been taken out, or at least shortened. These two flaws will turn off a lot of people.

However, if you can keep up with the snail pace, the movie is pretty good with a fair mix of action and touching moments. The first part of the story follows Jacquou as a young boy who loses both of his parents, and ends up being taken care of by the churchman of the village. The second part covers his revenge against the man who is responsible for the death of his parents now that he is a young man.

The dialogues and acting isn't all that great, but the actor(s) playing Jacquou is cute as a kid and handsome as an adult (the two lead actresses are very beautiful as well). The sceneries and imagery is simply breathtaking and the melodies enchanting. The movie is definitely great to look at, if anything, despite the weak storyline (but still does the job of staying interesting all the way through).

Jacquou le Croquant is nothing special, but to the right audience it's a good movie in all respect.

H" "From CVMC - In this sequel to Freeze-Die-Come to Life, our hero (Pavel Nazarov), now roughly fourteen, finds himself alive but still unable to keep out of trouble. His female chum Galia did not fare as well, but her sister (Dinara Drukarove, who played the role of Galia too) is present and develops a love/hate relationship with her sibling's friend. Complications arise when the boy is accused of stealing at school and again finds himself on the lam. Very similar to its predecessor, minus that it is filmed in color and concludes with a dose of surrealism. Winner of the 1992 Grand Jury Prize Cannes Film Festival !

H" "From Amazon - Based on the manga by Nozomu Tamaki, the broadcast series Dance in the Vampire Bund (2010) centers on a vampire realm that exists in parallel to everyday life. Akira, a normal-seeming high-school student suffering from amnesia, goes about ordinary activities with his classmate Yuki at an elite private academy in Tokyo. Their world changes when Mina Tepes, a descendant of Vlad the Impaler and the reigning princess of the vampire world, arrives at their school. In the first story, she connives to build a settlement dubbed the Vampire Bund on a Tokyo Bay landfill--and claims extraterritoriality for it, as if it were a 19th-century European colony. The subsequent plots--which start and stop arbitrarily--string together violent battles between various villains and Akira, who discovers he's both a werewolf and the sworn servant/protector of the Princess. There are lots of fan-service jiggle shots, but Princess Mina takes the form of a barely pubescent girl, which gives much of the nudity disquieting "lolicon" overtones. Other story elements include an attack on students seeking safety in a church, an assault on a buxom nun, a high-school student's apparently passionate attachment to an elementary-school boy, and "Agni Blood" ("Blood of the Lamb"), a chemical rebel vampires use to turn themselves into walking bombs. Despite all the violence and nudity, Vampire Bund is a crashing bore with long Morris the Explainer scenes. Otaku will recognize the many elements the series borrows from other anime. (Rated TV MA: extensive nudity; graphic violence; violence against women and children; sexual situations, including suggested lesbianism and pedophilia; grotesque imagery; potentially offensive religious imagery; tobacco use) --Charles Solomon.

Also, be sure to check out the AWESOME manga series!!! (1-12 available now)

From CVMC - This sometimes confusing erotic drama about the incestuous relationship of a mother and daughter is based on the autobiography of Italian theater actress Piera Degli Esposti though it focuses more on her mother Eugenia. The liberated Eugenia and her spaced-out, husband -- a professor -- live in a small provincial Italian town, where Eugenia is noticed as she zooms around on her bicycle and chats up strangers at the train station.

While still no more than a grown child, their daughter Piera (Bettina Gruhn) -- in tight dresses -- goes with her mother for a threesome when she engages in sexual relations with other men and subsequently she suffers both from poor health and the lack of a normal home. Mom even joins Piera in spying on men, flirting with a skinny-dipping man, and encouraging her daughter as she makes out with neighborhood boys.

The shadow of the future already clouds the household when Eugenia is committed again and again to the psychiatric clinic. By the time Piera has become an older teen (now played by Isabelle Huppert), both of her parents are in separate mental hospitals -- and both (even the father) are still sexually eccentric, to say the least.

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

It's not easy to describe this film to non-Germans, unfamiliar with either Max von der Grün's children's novel or those that are unfamiliar with Germany's post-ww2 social issues. However, if you born after 1970 in (then) West-Germany, it is likely that you have read the book in school or saw the following film on TV.

The "Suburb crocodiles" are a group of teenagers, living in the western part of North-Rhine Westphalia (in Germany known as the 'Ruhrpott', the heart of the working-class proletarians). The clique refers to themselves as a "gang", their "headquarter" being a transformed woodshed. While "defending" their club-house against adults and the children of foreign guest-workers, they get confronted with typical everyday tribulations, seen through the eyes of youngsters: unemployed parents, a gang of teenage burglars (who's head happens to be the elder brother of one of the Krokodile), xenophobia (a group of Italian guest-workers, referred to by the locals as "Makkaronis", blamed for said burglaries) and having to accept a new member, wheelchair-bound Kurt.

It is your typical adventure movie about teenage kids with some serious social issues which Germany – especially the Western part – had and has to deal with. However, both von der Grün and TV-veteran director Wolfgang Becker have found a balance between making a young-people's film that enjoyable for the adult audience and at the same time educates the youngsters without patronizing or lecturing them.

The cast is altogether excellently cast, giving an extremely authentic feel to the film (most youngsters were laymen actors who would never again appear on screen). Watch out for a very young Martin Semmelrogge as thieving punk Egon, a few years before he would appear in "Das Boot", get critical acclaim as one of the best actors of his generation and afterwards run his career into the ground.

We could compare the film to similar-minded kids movies like "Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer" or "Das Haus der Krokodile" but through directing and acting style, we're more often reminded of Klaus Lemkes "Rockers". What makes the comparison to "Rockers" even stronger is the excellent soundtrack. Let me say it this way: it's rather unlikely you'll ever see a children's movie again that features songs by "Rainbow", "Supertramp" or "Deep Purple".

All in all it's truly a cult-movie, a timeless classic and at the same time a very important film, that can still be enjoyed by youngsters and adults alike, even 40 years down the road – and if this last sentence made you feel slightly old, then you were born in the 1970's.
