Favorite Films of 2012 So Far
More to come. Movies I hope I love enough to add: Chronicle, Avengers, American Pie 4, Prometheus, Amazing Spider-Man, Dark Knight Rises and maybe John Carter if I'm one of the few to like it.

- DirectorGary RossStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games: a televised competition in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to fight to the death.***1/2
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.Yes, Michael Bay, you can blow up buildings in a city during a big fight but it gets boring with no character build-up or good story telling or fine direction and Avengers has all that "Dark Side of the Moon didn't ." ***1/2
- DirectorJosh TrankStarsDane DeHaanAlex RussellMichael B. JordanThree high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.***1/2
- DirectorBarry SonnenfeldStarsWill SmithTommy Lee JonesJosh BrolinAgent J travels in time to M.I.B.'s early days in 1969 to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history.***1/2
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsNoomi RapaceLogan Marshall-GreenMichael FassbenderFollowing clues to the origin of mankind, a team finds a structure on a distant moon, but they soon realize they are not alone.***1/2: Full of Sci/Fi movie cloches and not much originality as I hope. Still, Sci-Fi films have missed Ridley Scott presensence for too many years since his idea of what a science fiction film should look like is fabulous. But it's mostly the scene in the end credits that made me like this film even more.
- DirectorAndrew StantonStarsTaylor KitschLynn CollinsWillem DafoeTransported to Barsoom, a Civil War vet discovers a barren planet seemingly inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Woola and a princess in desperate need of a savior.***1/2
- DirectorMarc WebbStarsAndrew GarfieldEmma StoneRhys IfansAfter Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically altered spider, he gains newfound, spider-like powers and ventures out to save the city from the machinations of a mysterious reptilian foe.****: People bitch about how we didn't need the spider bite done all over again or Uncle Ben's death. Get over it! This is an under-rated movie with some fine action, as well a much better story than Spider-Man 3.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleTom HardyAnne HathawayEight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane.***1/2: The Bane vs Batman stuff steals the show and Anne Hathaway makes a fine Catwoman. Still, I can't help feeling that Nolan's Batman series was rushed.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittBruce WillisEmily BluntIn 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent into the past, where a hired gun awaits - someone like Joe - who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back Joe's future self for assassination.***1/2: A trippy Sci/Fi/Action/Drama that's one of the years best films.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsWinona RyderCatherine O'HaraMartin ShortWhen a boy's beloved dog passes away suddenly, he attempts to bring the animal back to life through a powerful science experiment.****: A remake of Burton's charmless live action original short didn't seem necessary but this movie is everything that the short wasn't. It's funny, charming, clever and not just Frankenstein with a dog like the original was.
- DirectorMark AndrewsBrenda ChapmanSteve PurcellStarsKelly MacdonaldBilly ConnollyEmma ThompsonDetermined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.***1/2
