102. Trantasia (2006)
Not Rated | 92 min | Documentary
A behind-the-scenes look at the first-ever 'World's Most Beautiful Transsexual Pageant.
Director: Jeremy Stanford | Stars: Erica Andrews, Cassandra Cass, Mimi Marks, Maria Roman
Votes: 209
I’m a sucker for any documentary that examines gender, so I feel obligated to give Trantasia a higher rating simply for its effort. I really enjoyed this film and the diverse, beautiful, and strong women in it.
The truth is, however, that this documentary dodged a lot of under-the-surface issues, such as the treatment of women in beauty pageants, the meaning that beauty pageants can hold to different people, and how gender identity can be shaped by pageants. Interviews with contestants mainly focused on how their families reacted to their decisions to become women. I appreciated hearing about that, too, but I wanted more.
For instance, some of the women seemed to be more interested in the performance aspect of being female than they were with simply feeling female (some of them referred to themselves in the third person, as though they had stage personas, and one woman made a confusing comment about wanting to die a man), which intrigued me—but the interviews were not deep enough to examine that territory.
Some women also seemed to have beefs with the pageant, but none of their comments went beyond “I didn’t like the experience,” hinting at unfairness and possibly racism. Very little information about the pageant is revealed, so I felt a sort of detachment from the event itself, and ultimately, a confusion about the experiences of the women in it.
I would have really, really loved this documentary, if only it had delved deeper.

107. Unborn in the USA: Inside the War on Abortion (2007)
101 min | Documentary
An unprecedented view of the deep secrets and deep pockets of the pro-life movement.
Directors: Stephen Fell, Will Thompson | Stars: John Brockhoeft, George W. Bush, Grant Cheney, Hillary Clinton
Votes: 167
No, it is definitely not objective. It's about the pro-life movement, just like the synopsis says. Sure, quite a few of these people are nuts, but it's a more thorough and intruguing look at the operations of the movement than other, "objective" documentaries have taken. It examines the different ways people express their pro-life views, including people outside abortion clincs and a woman who makes dolls in every fetus size. In the end, I came away having a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny bit more sympathy for pro-lifers.
