A simple list about movies that all were worth a better destiny. You have probably heard about them before but all is compared to the how much they actually grossed. But also how the critics and the public treated them. Very subjective but this is my opinion.

- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsTom CruiseNicole KidmanTodd FieldA Manhattan doctor embarks on a bizarre, night-long odyssey after his wife's admission of unfulfilled longing. The film Eyes Wide Shut was to become one of the largest major filmmakers the world has ever seen, Stanley Kubrics last art piece when he died shortly before the premiere.
He was always surrounded by the most bizzar rumors and it speculated about if the movie in fact revealed too much about the mythical network iluminatis movements.
To this day, live discussion on the internet about what really means that all messages Kubric left in fimen really means.
We also see this time hottest couple in the show buisness, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman who went their separate ways not to long after this film ended.
Cruise plays the doctor Bill that after founding out that his wife cheated on him goes shocked into the night.
He manages to infiltrate a Masonic party where he finally engaged in an orgy among a lot of masked guests.
He is been pulled more and more into a dream-like world where he soon finds his famij prosperous threatened,
Kubric created a film that the world never seen before on the screen, and this final work was a tribute to the craft.
The public did not care much for the movie and it looked a long time as if the budget of 65 million would be a difficult target after a weak start at the cinemas,
Many believe that this id Stanley Kubric weakest work while I'm quite the opposite opinion and rather would go so far that i name it to the most underrated film of modern time, - DirectorDavid FincherStarsJake GyllenhaalRobert Downey Jr.Mark RuffaloBetween 1968 and 1983, a San Francisco cartoonist becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac Killer, an unidentified individual who terrorizes Northern California with a killing spree. This movie seemed to have all the ingredients to be a blockbuster movie.
A budget on 85 millions,a intriguing story about the Zodiac killer and a really impressive trio in Downey J:r,Gyllenhaal and the director David Finscher who was smoking hot after the movie Seven.
The movie taking place in the San Francisco bay area where a killer put fear in the society in the late 60s and almost tauting the police when he leaves coded messeges on the crime scene.
The viewer will follow a amatuer journalist who get obsessed of the case and have to pay a high price when it comes to his family.
This movie is executed in style despite it is almost 3 hours long and the acting from Downey J:r,Gyllenhaal and Ruffalo could all have ended in a academy nomination if i would have decided and David Ficher show that the succes in Seven were no coincidence and this is a modern classic.
It is a mystery that Zodiac did not get the cred that it was meant to get and it is a disgrace that it first now 5 year after its release grossed 85 million.
So this is a real contender to the most underrated movie in modern time and if you for some reason still not have seen this masterpiece, you really have no excuse any more. - DirectorSimon WellsStarsGuy PearceYancey AriasMark AddyHoping to alter the events of the past, a 19th century inventor instead travels 800,000 years into the future, where he finds humankind divided into two warring races. This film is based on HG Wells classic novel from 1960 and it is his grandson Simon Wells who is the director.
This was also his last work in nearly a decade, the main role is played out perfectly by Guy Pearce who portrays a young inventor who manages to build a time machine and eventually take sg 800 000 ahead.
Hartdegen strikes of a huge loss when his beloved Emma dies and this is the reason he builds the time machine, but each time he changes the history it still end up with Emma's death.
Eventually he ends up in the future where humanity is divided into two species och Guy Pearce makes this an unforgettable performance as Alexander Hartdegen and although it differs a lot from the original, it's a very beautiful work.
We were probably many who prophesied Samantha Mumba a successful career but it was unfortunately not so many more good roles after this film to come .But in this movie she is putting up solid performance.
Even Jeremy Iron shines albeit in a very small role and this is absolutely one of the most underrated films even though it still has not played in the 122 million it costed in the making (98 million for the moment)
The film received neither good reviews or the publics grace but it seems a little like two opinion for for those who choose to watch this epic journey through time o place,Lousy or excellente!
Absolutely is this one of modern times most underrated movies and it hopefully still will give a lot of pleasure to those who discover it. - DirectorTom ShadyacStarsSteve CarellMorgan FreemanLauren GrahamGod contacts Congressman Evan Baxter and tells him to build an ark in preparation for a great flood.Jim Carrey had a blockbuster movie with Bruce the almighty a few years before this spin-off and maybe there is not the easiest film to do a sequel off.
Both Carrey and Jennifer Aniston rejected the offers that Universal Studios came up with and they choosed the rising star Steve Carell instead.
But they also doubled the budget from the first movie to a gasping 175 millions so they took a big chance for this kind of a movie.
A quick look at the numbers tell us that it is not until now the money is secured and i really think that it is the best the investors could get out of this project.
Carell is funny as always when he take on the role as the congressman Evan Baxter who after a meeting with god is told to build an ark.
God is played once again of Morgan Freeman and also the rest of the cast is very entertaining.
Maybe not a movie that will be remember for its greatness but Carell definitly show that he is Americas funniest man for the moment and for me this one is better then its ancestor.
So i think that its a underrated movie that will make you feel good and give you some laughs if you for some reason have not seen it yet. - DirectorGregor JordanStarsSamuel L. JacksonCarrie-Anne MossMichael SheenFollows a black-ops interrogator and an F.B.I. agent who try to press a suspect terrorist into divulging the location of three nuclear weapons set to detonate in the U.S.The movie Unthinkable have had a modest start from when it were released last year, even if the budget also were considered as modest (15 million).
The movie has a class actor in Samuel l Jackson who plays the leading role.
There was hardly no theaters that played the movie so it was released on DVD almost right away and the result is somewhere in the range of 5-6 millions, with other words a flop that most people have missed.
Non the less the movie brings up a intresting subject about how far that it is ok to go in the name of freedom for an civilized country such as USA.
Samuel L Jackson plays an black-ops interrogator that gets involved when a terrorist is caught and his job is to find out were the bomb is hidden.
And that is with all means allowed, on the way we will also find out that Samuels role "Henry" is an caring father and husband in his normal life, but when the torture gets worse he seems to drift away from that person more and more,
And even his allied seem to have doubts on his methods when the prisoner refuse to be broken down.
The movie is very brutal and raw,but it will also make you think quite alot on some really tough questions and how far you self would go.
Something there is no doubts about is in any case that this piece of film fits perfectly on a list like this. - DirectorDavid TwohyStarsCharlie SheenLindsay CrouseRichard SchiffZane, an astronomer, discovers intelligent alien life. But the aliens are keeping a deadly secret, and will do anything to stop Zane from learning it.A lot of sci-fi movies tend to underestimate the audience and one with such a small budget of 25 million all the more.
However, The Arrival is one of the best in the genre, even until today.
Charlie Sheen was also on the way down after classic films such as The Platoon, Wall Street and Hot Shoot, but he takes on the role of Zeke Ziminski, an astrophysicist who receives a signal of what appears to be from outer space.
He loses his job at the same time but is determined to figure out what the signal means and it does not take long before he is in the middle of something big.
This is also one of the more stable roles that have come from Mr. Sheen in recent years and the film keeps its viewers in a firm grip at all the way.
Director David Twohy drives everything in a fast pace and even gave us a little hint why he later in his career would be considered almost to be a icon.
After this film, he began working with the movie Pitch Black and Vin Diesel and eventually the whole Riddick concept.
So when you realize that this film only netted about 10 million and is with other words a loss .And most of the general public also seems to have missed this movie,
Then you will also realize that this movie is a hidden treasure and an obvious choice for this list. - DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsJohnny DeppFrank LangellaLena OlinA book broker discovers his latest find may summon Satan.Roman Polanski is considered one of the big in the industry and it may be well also say that Johnny Deep do so when they converged on the movie The ninth gate, so it was thought success was given.
Depp plays the role as Dean Corso a bookseller dealing in rare pieces and gets a very different mission when his ask to find the last out of four books that will give its owner powers to open the ninth gate, the gateway to hell.
This forces him into a world filled with occult stuff as well as evil and death.
He becomes more and more entranced by the mission's nature, and soon find him self intoxicated by satanic forces.
The film is visually very beautiful in its gothic splendor and masterfully constructed of Polanski who really manage to find the right atmosphere.
Depp is as usual brilliant in his interpretation, but also supporting roles, Lena Olin and Frank Langella is top class.
The film was not received well by either audiences or critics, but has at least hit the budget in 38 milion in the last year så maybe its harsh to call it a real flop.
But I think this masterpiece deserves the epithet highly underrated movie and i also think it's a must-have selection of any film lovers. - DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsHarrison FordSam SpruellPeter StebbingsWhen Russia's first nuclear submarine malfunctions on its maiden voyage, the crew must race to save the ship and prevent a nuclear disaster.K-19 widowmaker is based on a true story in the early 60's where a Russian submarine was on the verge to a disaster of enormous dimensions, when she was on her maiden voyage, problems with the nuclear reactor almost evolved to a WW3.
The leading role was given to the safest card that existed at that time, Harrison Ford and a budget of 90 million was posted.
Submarine's regular captain Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson) is following orders from the party deprived of his command in favor of the higher-ranking Alexi Vostrikov (Harrison Ford).
These two gentlemen do impeccable acting with the hard task to shine in russian. The film is clearly structured in a way that suits the audience and if you only gets by the first min the movie will keep you in a firm grip.
The ship's crew, however still have faith in their captain, but may be faced with the decision.
Problems arise when Vostrikov with a fool's stubbornness refuses to repair the damage and going out to sea.
The movie is really good and definitely one of the best in the genre and depict in a realistic way the mood and the current state of opinion which prevailed during the Cold War.
It's not impossible that the people were a little bored with the concept of submarine movies at this time but it's a great shame that a film of this caliber only attracted 65 million, that is well below what you put in to it.
The ratings tend to be mixed when talking about this movie but clearly is the k-19 Widowmaker one of the most underrated movies in our time. - DirectorZack SnyderStarsJackie Earle HaleyPatrick WilsonCarla GuginoIn a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history. To make a film of old comic's been quite a recipe for success for the past few years.
So when Marvel were announcing the filming of one the most sacred of them all, Watchmen based on Alan Moore's masterpiece, it was both scared and excited fans who followed the project.
The man who would save the fans was Zack Snyder with the beautiful 300 to his credit, it became pretty clear early on that the cast would be out of relatively unknown talent.
It is quite rare that you manage to transfer the series feeling to the film and it is more of a rule that the fanatics of the series is doomed to be unhappy, while the average person swallows the concept.
But it was perhaps here that Snyder manage to good, for he seems to have fallen somewhere in between the wider audience and the hardcore-fans.
Because it is definitely a different experience to look atthe Watchmen movie, a series that has long been considered to be impossible to do justice had now suddenly quite a lot of satisfied fans.
But the masses did not really like the movie and even though the initial budget of 130 million now a days is passed,
(185 million to the current date).
So most likely is the movie considered to be some what of a flop in the mainstream world.
While the rest of us got a real visual masterpiece to enjoy, no matter how you look at it, a underrated movie is what it is. - DirectorRod LurieStarsRobert RedfordJames GandolfiniMark RuffaloA court-martialed General rallies together twelve hundred inmates to rise against a corrupt and sadistic warden. With a budget on 60 millions and only a total of 20 million grossed over a decade its fair to say that this drama were not one of Dreamworks better project.
Robert Redford is still perfect for the role as the highly decorated General Eugene Irwing whos been put in a maximum security prison for the military.
Irwing has lost all his military status but is still considered to be a hero among the inmates and even from the warden Winter (excellent played of J. Gandolfini)
Winter runs his prison with a iron hand and when Irwing decides to teach him a lesson, the conflict escalates.
The acting from Redford and Gandolfini is excellent and even Marc Ruffalo does a solid role, the movie can be some what predictable from time to time but that is not a problem.
The message is that you cant take the dignity away from a man,and true leadership comes from within.
Its a enigma for me that this movie flopped so heavily when it comes to money, critics and the audience, because its better than a lot of other movies out there.
