È la solita solfa, già codificata da Breakin'. Rispetto ad altri titoli simili, mancano qui le coreografie spettacolari. Il poco che il film ha da offrire è da ricondurre alla sensualità delle ballerine/attrici. Un po' come ne "Le ragazze del Coyote Ugly", di cui questo film riprende in larga misura anche la trama.

Altra "pietra miliare" nel suo genere. Non ha l'eleganza di "Save the Last Dance", ma nella sua grossolanità, in qualche modo riesce ad ergersi lievemente dalla mediocrità assoluta in cui ribollono gli altri esponenti del filone, forse in virtù di uno sviluppo narrativo condotto con un minimo di raziocinio e per via del briciolo di carisma che ogni tante pare luccicare negli attori.

È il culmine della spettacolarità di questo filone - credo abbia segnato un vertice oltre il quale non ha senso andare. Ma trama e recitazione sono ai minimi storici. È pirotecnico quanto basta per tenere incollati allo schermo i ragazzini col sogno di diventare ballerini, avvezzi alle convulsioni visive. Per tutti gli altri, è un piatto stracarico di condimenti, difficile da digerire. Ma, d'altro canto, per tutti gli altri, bastava e avanzava già un "Save the Last Dance" o il primo "Step Up".

È il vero iniziatore del filone che ad inizio millennio è tornato in auge dopo il successo di "Save the Last Dance". Ha l'aura del film di culto, ma contenutisticamente, è perfino più povero dei polpettoni danzerecci della nostra epoca. I dualismi tematici sono fissati: ghetto contro scuola, nero contro bianco, hip-hop contro danza moderna/classica. Lo stile anche. Nella nostra epoca, sarà un continuo rifarsi a questa formula, di per sé non certo impeccabile. Ma chi ama la danza, non potrà che apprezzare.

Per quanto riguarda i film col tema del ballo, "Rize" è forse quello più interessante. Ha lo stile del documentario, sebbene tra un'intervista e l'altra, prende forma (anche) un intreccio. Il ballo è il tema primario, ma costituisce un tramite per la riflessione sociale, condotta in maniera infinitamente meno banale rispetto agli altri esponenti della "categoria". Qui emerge spontanea la realtà, mentre altrove si rimasticano all'infinito vacui cliché.

Il fondatore del fenomeno dei film di ballo del nuovo millennio, e probabilmente quello meglio riuscito - dopo "Rize", che però, nonostante qualche tematica in comune, ha uno stile totalmente differente. La trama è estremamente prevedibile e scontata, ma la recitazione non delude del tutto, e il piano visivo denuncia una certa eleganza, che manca totalmente nella maggior parte delle produzioni analoghe che seguiranno a questa, ispirandovisi palesemente. Sarà che ci trovavamo nell'epoca di Dawson's Creek, per cui vigeva una certa grazia nel raccontare storie sentimentali in modo non troppo banale.

È esattamente il film becero privo di contenuti che ti aspetti. Come una cheerleader, oltre a sculettare, non è buono ad altro. Ma la furbizia con cui lo fa, serve a salvarlo dalla totale inutilità. È sovraccarico, caricaturale, kitch oltre misura. Perciò, perversamente, interessante.

Nel suo ambito, vanta le coreografie più spettacolari in assoluto - a differenza di Step Up 3D, c'è meno effettistica e più sostanza. La trama, per quanto banale e priva di qualunque spunto di mordente, è esposta in maniera gradevole, sul piano visivo e attoriale. Il punto debole è forse la protagonista, presumo scelta più per la carineria, che per l'efficacia.

Il primo capitolo in fondo era piacevole. Qui, quel poco di buono dell'esordio, è completamente andato perso. La trama forse prova a svincolarsi dagli a dir poco abusati stilemi di questo genere, tenta qualche nuovo svincolo, ma il risultato è pressoché un totale disastro. In qualche modo, si salva il finale, con un dialogo conclusivo (quasi un monologo) della protagonista che veicola qualche spunto di riflessione.

Fa di tutto per aggiungere un po' di sale alla trama ed evadere dal cliché di questo genere, tentando di incastrare tre distinte vicende (convergenti nella sfida finale) di tre diverse crew, ognuna con le proprie problematiche ed esigenze (a sfondo sociale, essendo tre gruppi sparsi per il mondo). Il piano narrativo non riesce a reggere la troppa carne a fuoco, la troppa "ambizione", e il risultato è goffo e inconcludente. Come al solito, lo salvano le coreografie, fantasiose e spettacolari al punto giusto.

Questo quarto capitolo raggiunge i livelli (buoni, nel complesso) del capostipite della serie, e forse riesce anche a surclassarlo. Intendiamoci, ciò significa che nel suo genere è un esponente valido, mentre come film in sé, è una pellicola decente, tutt'al più. Ad ogni modo, è un film da guardare al cinema, o comunque con un ottimo impianto audio-visivo, che permetta di apprezzarne l'interessante lavoro di spettacolarizzazione della tridimensionalità. Gli autori hanno sfruttato a dovere le possibilità offerte dalla nuova (?) tecnologia. Ciò si traduce in una minore attenzione accordata alla coreografie in sé - già abbondantemente esplorate nei 3 predecessori - e una cura lodevole riversata sul piano prettamente visivo: in 'Step Up Revolution', più che i ballerini, a danzare sono luci e colori. La caratteristica che di solito accomuna i titoli di questo filone, è la capacità di riflettere i propri tempi: gli autori fanno di tutto per creare un mondo diegetico in grado di portare sullo schermo al massimo grado quello del target di riferimento (ventenni col pallino della danza e il sogno di sfondare). Così stavolta tutto ruota intorno alle visite collezionate su YouTube, la musica ha spesso un sapore dubstep, le esibizioni sono quelle organizzate per strada - via social network - da un grande numero di ballerini (i flash mob). La trama ruota attorno al principio "Breakin' the rules", e sebbene esso sia alla base di questo sottogenere filmico fin dalle origini, ho molto apprezzato il fatto che la danza diventi qui un mezzo "rivoluzionario" - da cui il sottotitolo -, che consente di incidere sul mondo "reale" e cambiare ciò che non piace, combattere ciò che non si ritiene giusto; una forma di manifestazione e protesta. E ciò si riallaccia alla mia precedente argomentazione sul potere "riflettente" di questo filone.
