Years later, when she is off the pills and is attempting to fit in and act like a "normal" teenager, she is invited to a beach party where her "friend with benefits", Trevor, is caught in a fire in a cabin while she kisses him. Trevor dies, causing Luce to be transferred to a reform school called Sword & Cross. She is befriended almost immediately by Arriane, another student studying there, and soon makes friends with Pennyweather "Penn," Cam, and the librarian, Miss Sophia. She is also inexplicably drawn to Daniel Grigori, whom she believes that she recognizes from somewhere. In Torment , Daniel sends Luce to a new school in California called Shoreline, where, as he said, she will be safe. Luce doesn't really know safe from what - that is something she will only discover through history. She is now hungry to find out about her past lives. As the story evolves, Luce will show a deep resentment to Daniel. If they had never met in another past life to begin with, she could have had a normal life without having to die and be reborn every 17 years. These feelings will come in conflict with the love she still feels for Daniel, while developing feelings for Miles. After the events in Torment, she will try to travel to her different past lives to find out what are the secrets Daniel is hiding from her, and she will find a way to end the curse that both their love has.

He continuously tries to charm Luce and is antagonistic towards Daniel. In Fallen, he is portrayed as being evil, but we do learn that he has a more caring side to him. He likes Luce but doesn't 'Love' her. He mainly wants to get her to kiss him just to wind Daniel up.In Torment,he makes a pact with Daniel for 18 days so that both could hunt outcasts sent by the elders who are trying to kill Luce. He doesn't have a huge role in this book, but he does show a more caring side as he helps protect Luce from getting killed when she is lured off campus and starts to seem more protective over her.In Passion,he will try to help Daniel recover Luce from the shadows, but Daniel would always refuse help. His past will be revealed and the reason for his being "evil" will be known. Cam and Daniel are brothers.
