- DirectorJames BurkhammerStarsJ.B. Ghuman Jr.John Wesley ShippDerek Sean LaraTwo brothers develop a sexual attraction to one another amid the unkind world around them.9 - Beautifully filmed, acted and written. Shocks me each time I watch it and I keep watching it!
- DirectorWilliam Branden BlinnStarsNick SoperCarlos SalasLawrence Jefferies and Hugh Greerey have just met. They both have had girlfriends in the past...they're both straight. Thirteen or so minutes later, however, something's happened and things have changed.9 - This short delves into one of those moments of "OMG, did we just do that?" and the aftermath from two very different perspectives.
- DirectorDaniel RibeiroStarsGhilherme LoboTess AmorimFabio AudiThe arrival of a new student in school changes Leonardo's life. This 15 year-old blind teenager has to deal with the jealousy of his friend Giovana while figuring out the new feelings he's having towards his new friend, Gabriel.9 - "I Don't Want to Go Back Alone" - I've dated deaf men before, but if you were blind... such an interesting concept about being attracted to someone. A wonderful story (I almost said "viewing") with a lot of warmth. Beware of poor subtitles with this one!
- DirectorJudd KingStarsTrace BarnesBryan BukoliskiJake KleinSean is deaf, a high school student and a cross country runner. He's also a closeted gay teenager who's just coming to terms with his sexuality and his attraction to a fellow team-mate.9 - No, it's not a silent film though the main character is deaf. Very well done.
- DirectorRoberto FiescoStarsJorge Adrián EspíndolaJavier EscobarSalvador ÁlvarezA young mute student goes to the movies when ditching school, but changes his mind when he meets an unemployed man who tries to communicate with him. Through messages and games, the two will make a discovery they never imagined.9 - Beautifully done and beautiful actors. Passionate. Bonus points for guessing the pun by now on my list.
- DirectorJho Kwang-soo KimStarsLee Chae-eunLee Je-HoonGo Su-heeExpecting a cozy night outside of the barracks, Seok visits his boyfriend Min-soo who is serving in the military. However when Min-soo's mother questions their relationship, the only answer they can give is that they are 'just friends'.9 - I wish there were more films put out in Asia like this one. A wonderful 'feel-good' piece.
- DirectorMark ChristopherStarsJ.D. CernaMary Beth HurtEdward SeamonOn his family's farm in rural Iowa, young Jack Gudmanson is wrestling with his sexual identity, not an easy thing to do in the macho world of the Midwest. But things become clearer for him when he discovers via a rusty old lunch box filled with gay magazines that his father, killed in Vietnam, led a double life down on the farm. But as liberating as the discovery is for Jack, it is painful for his grandfather and mother, who have tried for years to keep it a family secret. Now Jack must decide whether to share this new information with his younger sister or allow it to remain buried a while longer.9 - We always wonder what an absent parent would think when you come out. Jack gets an unusual insight into his dilemma when he find a part of his departed father's hidden past. Good all around.
- DirectorXavier GensMarius ValeStarsMélanie BernierFrédéric ChauPatrick Ligardes8 - "The Incredible Adventures of Fusion Man" - It brings new meaning to the term "secret identity" with superheroes.
- DirectorPeggy RajskiStarsBrett BarskyJudy KainJohn LizziUpon hitting puberty, a high-school boy realizes he is homosexual and faces prejudice from his parents and friends.8 - The film that founded The Trevor Project.
- DirectorLarry LaFondStarsTerry RayBryan DattiloJennifer EcholsRandy has a huge crush on hunky co-worker Jack, but Ray can't figure out if Jack is gay - until Jack discovers a GAYDAR gun that could change everything.8 - Pure fluffy-muffin-campy fun.
- DirectorArmand LameloiseStarsArthur MonclaRémi BressonÉlodie BolléeArnaud and Guillaume are in their last year of high school. Summer is approaching and like any teenager, they're thinking about cigarettes, alcohol and sex. But boys or girls? Future looks so blurry when you're a teenager!8 - Ah the rushing hormones of youth. :) A very good coming of age short all around. The director doesn't rush things so the acting is well measured, the story concise, the characters attractive and likable. To me I enjoyed the journey more than trying to get to a Hollywood-style destination.
- DirectorKristian PithieStarsMartin SharpeThomas BlackburneRobyn NethercoteTwo boys are talking after a bicycle accident. The older is bragging about his experience with girls, but is that just a boast?8 - One of the best things about short films is their simplicity. You'll figure out the title at the end with a smile.
- DirectorChristian TafdrupStarsAllan HydeJulie Grundtvig WesterLars Brygmann16-year-old Carsten just started dating Melissa. He is introduced to her sweet and likable parents, who kindly welcome their first son in law. On a weekend in their summerhouse it turns out that Carsten and Melissa's dad might have more in common than they first thought.8 - You know where this one is going since it's on this list. My favorite cross-generational gay film.
- DirectorGregory CookeStarsSara GilbertErik MacArthurGregory ItzinA father buys his closeted son a night with a prostitute.8 - You can guess where this one goes pretty easily. It just does it so well. Sara Gilbert shines in her role as Emily (the prostitute).
- DirectorLawrence FerberStarsCory Wexler GrantSimon WoolleyDiane SpodarekTom, a married closet case and parent who trolls gay bars for sex on the sly is placed in charge of his friend's teenage son. And the boy wants a kiss. Or more. What to do?8 - Sub-par acting but a fun story. An indulgence. For example:
Topher: Can I ask you a question? Tom: Sure. Topher: It's personal. Tom: Well that depends. Topher: I'm embarrassed. Tom: What is it? Topher: I can't. Tom: Just go ahead sport. Topher: What's butt-*beep* like? Tom: Go do your homework! - DirectorDave O'BrienStarsDamian PelliccioneNick BartzenVanessa BornBen has erotic feelings for his roommate. Currently they are the best of friends but his roommate seems oblivious to the sexual nature of Ben's feelings. Should he just be honest with him?8 - Simple and oh so true too often in college. Alcohol and desire, hmmmmm. Though my roomie was NOT a hottie.
- DirectorLaurie LyndStarsJohn BregarShannon KookDean ArmstrongThe story of two young lovers separated by their rival fraternities.8 - Yes, a gay variation of Romeo and Juliet. You can tell this is one is hoping to be a full length feature film. Good casting and premise.
- DirectorTrevor AndersonStarsAndrew BurseyFarren TimoteoKara KeithA young painter works up the courage to contact the collections agency that has been hounding him and gets embroiled in a more personal confrontation than he bargained for.8 - I think I understand the very odd title name for this short. Clever and engaging covering story, content and realism.
- DirectorAlain HainStarsDanny BernardyMatthew WilkasRebecca PappaJared is closeted. Sam is straight. They find a connection in each other that they've never had before, but where do they go from there? Over the course of three nights, six gay men sat down for interviews about their experiences, sexual and otherwise, with straight men. Those documentary interviews provide the narration for 'Curious Thing' as we watch Jared and Sam form a friendship that tests the boundaries of what they know about love. But as Jared's walls slowly come down and his passion for Sam grows, things take an unexpected turn.8 - This is actually a very common experience for gay men (since straight men outnumber us like by 20 to 1). The narrative style is superb and the story spot-on.
- DirectorGarth BardsleyStarsRen CaseyWilliam S. CaleoCarey MacaleerMom's out shopping and this is when the fun begins, with a gay boy making out with his buddy and his brother is doing the same upstairs with a girl.8 - There is a point where Mom says, "Love is just too difficult" though the film focuses more on lust. Great acting between the syblings and of complex relationships you peer into in such a short amount of time. Well done.
- DirectorHannah HilliardStarsCallan McAuliffeJohn BatchelorDiana GlennKeeping the position of number one son requires a certain amount of ingenuity. Twelve year old Greg has inherited his father's competitive streak. On a family holiday to Fiji they have different ideas about where Greg should focus his talents. When his creative pursuits fail to amuse his father Greg goes to bizarre lengths to win him back. Based on a true story.8 - Supposedly based on a true story. Very good performances by the kids in this. You could almost see this plot on a TV sitcom.
- DirectorChristopher BanksStarsBrian MooreChris TempestAlan GranvilleA dyed-in-the-wool Londoner travels 10,000 miles to rural New Zealand to rekindle an old relationship, only to find that its fate lies in the paws of a faded old teddy bear.8 - I think everyone has one of those relationships, ie. The One That Got Away. Lovely ending too.
- DirectorAdam SalkyStarsAdam FlemingMichael CassidyMarla BurkholderHigh school senior Ben secretly lusts after bad boy classmate Johnny. After Ben gives Johnny a ride home one night, the boys end up in Johnny's swimming pool and have an encounter that breaks the rules and blows Ben's mind.8
- DirectorHong KhaouStarsPeter PeraltaJay BrownIt is said that if one succeeds in catching a falling leaf in mid-flight, then a wish will be granted. Leung and Will, two teenagers, venture into the woods to catch themselves a wish but Leung longs for something that Will isn't willing to give. A touching tale about the anxiety and excitement of a boy wanting to kiss his best friend.7
- DirectorPascal-Alex VincentStarsEmylou BrunetLaura BoujenahCôme LevinAt a meeting of the game "Truth or Dare?" two young boys, Matthew and Maxime, are challenging to embrace. The kiss will cause them some excitement. From that time, teens who witnessed this scene are allusions more or less directly to the possible homosexuality of Maxime. A revelation will then destabilize the group.7 - At Summer Camp
