- DirectorMichel GondryStarsSeth RogenJay ChouChristoph WaltzFollowing the death of his father, Britt Reid, heir to his father's large company, teams up with his late dad's assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team.Did not like this at all. Waltz was funny for like 2 minutes. It had potential. The script was lacking bigtime.
- DirectorJon M. ChuStarsJustin BieberBoyz II MenMiley CyrusThis documentary follows Justin Bieber with some footage of performances from his 2010 concert tour.IMDB users are some of the most cold hearted people out there. Blindly throwing ones at this for no reason. It's an informative and well made documentary. It's not like all the other concert films from Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers but whatever.
- DirectorGeorge NolfiStarsMatt DamonEmily BluntLisa ThoresonThe affair between a politician and a contemporary dancer is affected by mysterious forces keeping the lovers apart.Easily one of my favorite movies of the year. Really fun time and intriguing premise.
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppIsla FisherTimothy OlyphantRango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff. The best animated movie of the year for me. If an animated character were to be nominated for best actor ever, I would want it to be Johnny Depp for this movie. Really funny and creative.
- DirectorD.J. CarusoStarsAlex PettyferTimothy OlyphantDianna AgronAliens and their Guardians are hiding on Earth from intergalactic bounty hunters. They can only be killed in numerical order, and Number Four is next on the list. This is his story. One of the most underrated movies of the year. Hoping for a sequel.
- DirectorCary Joji FukunagaStarsMia WasikowskaMichael FassbenderJamie BellA mousy governess who softens the heart of her employer soon discovers that he's hiding a terrible secret.Beautiful period film. Costumes and cinematography are gorgeous. Story is a little flat for my taste.
- DirectorJames WanStarsPatrick WilsonRose ByrneTy SimpkinsA family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further. One of the scariest movies I've ever seen, Insidious is an original story that may go a little too far in it's final act but brings it all home with the final five minutes.
- DirectorDuncan JonesStarsJake GyllenhaalMichelle MonaghanVera FarmigaA soldier wakes up in someone else's body and discovers he's part of an experimental government program to find the bomber of a commuter train within 8 minutes. One of the better movies of the year. Not in my personal top ten, but it's still an entertaining diversion.
- DirectorTom McCarthyStarsPaul GiamattiAmy RyanJeffrey TamborA struggling lawyer and volunteer wrestling coach's chicanery comes back to haunt him when the teenage grandson of the client he has double-crossed comes into his life. This on the other hand might be in my top ten or right on the outside. Beautiful and heartwarming story, brilliantly lead by Paul Giamatti.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid ArquetteTen years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer. This is either the best in the series or the second best. Bringing things all back to basics, Scream 4 made this franchise fun and energized again.
- DirectorJoe WrightStarsSaoirse RonanCate BlanchettEric BanaA sixteen-year-old girl who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives. This is an interesting movie for me. The story isn't great, but I was enamored by the story when I first saw it. And now I realize that it was Saoirse Ronan performance that made me care. Beautifully directed and an amazing score make this movie a little more style over substance, but I'm not complaining.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsRobert PattinsonReese WitherspoonChristoph WaltzJacob takes a job as an animal caretaker in a traveling circus. There he meets Marlena, a beautiful circus performer. Their shared compassion for a special elephant Rosie leads to love, but Marlena's cruel husband stands in their way.No chemistry. None of the actors fit well together. The acting wasn't particularly bad, there just wasn't any emotion in the actions. If the chemistry was tightened up, this could have been one of the better movies of the year.
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsChris HemsworthAnthony HopkinsNatalie PortmanThe powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.Simply fun and entertaining. It's not trying to be anything more than an entertaining time filler till The Avengers comes out next year.
- DirectorPaul FeigStarsKristen WiigMaya RudolphRose ByrneCompetition between the maid of honor and a bridesmaid, over who is the bride's best friend, threatens to upend the life of an out-of-work pastry chef. One of, if not THE funniest movie all year. Kristen Wiig is perfect. The story is by the numbers but that doesn't change the fact that the jokes are smart, witty, and uber hilarious.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsBradley CooperZach GalifianakisEd HelmsTwo years after the bachelor party in Las Vegas, Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug jet to Thailand for Stu's wedding. Stu's plan for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, goes seriously awry. While funnier than the first in all ways, I could never see myself sitting down to ever watch this movie ever again. Utterly repugnant comedy and shock tactics only work once. Plus it doesn't help that this is the same movie in a different location.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them. The best superhero movie of the year, and maybe the best X-Men movie yet. It's gorgeously shot and impeccably crafted. But the real draw here is McAvoy and Fassbender. Best casting of the year maybe.
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsOwen WilsonRachel McAdamsKathy BatesWhile on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s every day at midnight. The gushing love for this one is beyond me. I saw the movie. I liked the movie. I forgot the movie. The problem is, IT WON'T GO AWAY!
- DirectorTerrence MalickStarsBrad PittSean PennJessica ChastainThe story of a family in Waco, Texas in 1956. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence and struggles with his parents' conflicting teachings. The most beautiful movie I've seen all year and maybe ever. I can't talk much about this one without rambling so all I'll say is that this movie is somewhere in my top three of the year. *POTENTIAL TOP 10*
- DirectorMike MillsStarsEwan McGregorChristopher PlummerMélanie LaurentA young man is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father: that he has terminal cancer and that he has a young male lover.Absolutely brilliant and charming movie. I can't see anyone truly hating this movie.
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsCameron DiazJason SegelJustin TimberlakeA lazy, incompetent middle school teacher who hates her job, her students, and her co-workers is forced to return to teaching to make enough money for breast implants after her wealthy fiancé dumps her.Cliche storyline and stale comedy but it's helped immensely by Cameron Diaz's hilarious performance. To say that she makes the movie would be an understatement.
- DirectorMichael BayStarsShia LaBeoufRosie Huntington-WhiteleyTyrese GibsonThe Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and to learn its secrets.BOOM! I LIKED IT! CRASH! BEST IN THE SERIES! (METAL CLANKING!)
- DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsOtto JespersenRobert StoltenbergKnut NærumA group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter. One of the more obscure and fun movies I've seen all year, Trollhunter is something you have to see to believe.
- DirectorMike CahillStarsBrit MarlingWilliam MapotherMatthew-Lee ErlbachOn the night of the discovery of a duplicate Earth in the Solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident.A brilliant performance and an intriguing gimmick make this movie watchable. If there wasn't "another earth" in the sky, this would have never got any good reviews. It is beautifully shot though.
- DirectorSeth GordonStarsJason BatemanCharlie DayJason SudeikisThree friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realize they are standing in the way of their happiness. The funniest and most original storyline is hampered a little by it's boring visuals or directing style. Still one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.
- DirectorWill GluckStarsMila KunisJustin TimberlakePatricia ClarksonA young man and woman decide to take their friendship to the next level without becoming a couple, but soon discover that adding sex only leads to complications.Kind of a mockery of cliche romantic comedies, kind of not, "Friends with Benefits" is a fun and honest comedy with one of the best screen pairings since Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintHarry, Ron, and Hermione search for Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes in their effort to destroy the Dark Lord as the final battle rages on at Hogwarts. What else is there to say about this. Best in the series. An end of an era.
- DirectorRupert WyattStarsJames FrancoAndy SerkisFreida PintoA substance designed to help the brain repair itself gives advanced intelligence to a chimpanzee who leads an ape uprising. This one really caught me off guard. Really well made and gorgeous visual effects. Andy Serkis deserves a BEST ACTOR nomination but the world isn't ending tomorrow and pigs still can't fly.
- DirectorTate TaylorStarsViola DavisEmma StoneOctavia SpencerAn aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.Really nice story. One of my favorites of the year. The only problem I'd say is the climax of the story is the whole final hour but I'll forgive it.
- DirectorCraig GillespieStarsAnton YelchinColin FarrellDavid Tennant"Fright Night" - A new neighbor moves in next to Charley, who discovers that he is an ancient vampire who preys on the community. Can he save his neighborhood from the creature with the help of the famous "vampire killer", Peter Vincent? One of the most entertaining movies I've seen all year. Better than the original in every aspect. the 3-d was extraneous though.
- DirectorTroy NixeyStarsKatie HolmesGuy PearceBailee MadisonA young girl sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend believes that she has released creatures from a sealed ash pit in the basement of her new home.I hate to come down on this one. If the movie was scary it would have been one of the best of the year. It wasn't. But everything else was perfect. Acting, production, story. All top notch.
- DirectorJonathan LevineStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittSeth RogenAnna KendrickInspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease. One of the best performances I've seen all year, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is someone who deserves the oscar for this but it won't happen. One of my favorite movies of the year. *POTENTIAL TOP 10*
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsElle FanningAJ MichalkaKyle ChandlerDuring the summer of 1979, a group of friends witness a train crash and investigate subsequent unexplained events in their small town. This movie just gets me fuzzy inside. It really does bring back memories of E.T. and childhood. The action of the second act bring it down a little but I find myself looking past that. The first act is a masterpiece. So would the second act...if this movie was only a monster movie, but it's so much more than that. It brought tears to my eyes and it's happily in my top five of the year.
- DirectorJesse PeretzStarsPaul RuddElizabeth BanksZooey DeschanelA comedy centered on an idealist who barges into the lives of his three sisters. What's not to love? Paul Rudd performance is so charming you'll forget about the lacking story around it.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsMatt DamonKate WinsletJude LawHealthcare professionals, government officials and everyday people find themselves in the midst of a pandemic as the CDC works to find a cure. One of the best movies of the year and one of the scariest, unfortunately it's really cold and bleak.
- DirectorGavin O'ConnorStarsTom HardyNick NolteJoel EdgertonThe youngest son of an alcoholic former boxer returns home, where he's trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament - a path that puts the fighter on a collision course with his estranged, older brother. The most intense and sad and heartwarming endings to a movie this year. I was clutching back tears because it was so excruciating to watch. Some of the best performances all year. Easily in my top ten of the year.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingCarey MulliganBryan CranstonA mysterious Hollywood action film stuntman gets in trouble with gangsters when he tries to help his neighbor's husband rob a pawn shop while serving as his getaway driver. One of the most entertaining, fun, smart, enjoyable, perfectly paced, and tied for my favorite movie of the year. One of my all time favorite movies. *POTENTIAL TOP 10*
- DirectorBennett MillerStarsBrad PittRobin WrightJonah HillOakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to assemble a baseball team on a lean budget by employing computer-generated analysis to acquire new players.Either my second or third favorite movie of the year. There is just something about this movie that attracts me. It's beautifully scripted and the directing is really something that deserves more attention. *POTENTIAL TOP 10*
- DirectorEli CraigStarsTyler LabineAlan TudykKatrina BowdenAffable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for murderers by a group of preppy college students. In a year with like a thousand comedies coming out, I'd say this one is the most original. Really clever satire.
- DirectorGeorge ClooneyStarsPaul GiamattiGeorge ClooneyPhilip Seymour HoffmanAn idealistic staffer for a new presidential candidate gets a crash course on dirty politics during his stint on the campaign trail. So caught off guard by this one. Unbelievably gorgeous and perfectly directed by George Clooney. The final thirty minutes left me speechless.
