1. The Vampire Diaries (2009–2017)

TV-14 | 43 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

The lives, loves, dangers and disasters in the town, Mystic Falls, Virginia. Creatures of unspeakable horror lurk beneath this town as a teenage girl is suddenly torn between two vampire brothers.

Stars: Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham

Votes: 349,671

The most important thing to know about this show is the first four episodes are seemingly pointless; focused on cheap thrills, romance, and teen drama. Then something magical happens, creeping up silently and latching on without the viewer's notice: interest. By the end of the fourth episode the many story lines pick up and take off, and suddenly a silly or meaningless event becomes important. Things move fast in "The Vampire Diaries."

This is a show that takes risks: people die without warning, stories that you thought could go on forever take only a few episodes, characters do and experience things you wouldn't have thought possible. Even better, there is no character who is wholly unlikeable. Everyone in the large ensemble cast has a story and a 3-dimensional structure, and even if the viewer decidedly doesn't like a character, the swing from one storyline to the next never lingers in one place for too long.

Some people have called this show their guilty pleasure. I refer to it as smart writing, good acting, excellent storytelling, and wonderful viewing. As of right now the second season is in the first few episodes of airing and the magic has not gone out. Far from it; this show only gets better. The lesser episodes are still fantastic, and the truly great ones are rich with everything an episode of television could possibly desire. I have yet to finish watching an episode without cursing the screen to give me more - my addiction to such a fresh show sometimes keeps me up at night.

2. Stargate SG-1 (1997–2007)

TV-14 | 44 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

A secret military team, SG-1, is formed to explore other planets through the recently discovered Stargates.

Stars: Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge

Votes: 101,353

Stargate SG1 is not a TV series, but a whole universe in which we see gathered full explanations for the unanswered questions of mankind. What's with the pyramids in Egipt? Why did ancient people believe in so many Gods? Do aliens exist?

Using a device called "stargate", humans begin to travel to other planets to gather new technologies, to encounter other races and establish diplomatic relations but also to engage several enemies. At first, it sounds like a low budget action series with shooting and poor effects. That is not the true at all! In this movie, everything that happened in history has another meaning, totally different then we learned: the Egyptian gods where actually aliens called Goa'uld that brought humans to Earth to work, the Asgard gods where actually aliens from a race called the Asgard, who were the caretakers of humans, Merlin was actually an ascended being and so on.

The cast is just great. Richard Dean Anderson fits perfect in the role of the colonel, as a soldier with lots of experience but not so good with high tech equipment, Amanda Tapping is Major Carter, the science whiz that figures stuff out, Michael Shanks is Daniel Jackson, the archaeologist who correlates everything and Christophor Judge plays the role of Teal'c, the alien sidekick in pursuit of freedom for the Jaffa. All of them play their roles very convincing and the chemistry between them can be seen throughout the whole series.

The plot is gradually built and renewed with many things each season (because they always thought the end of the season was the end of the series). The special effects used in the movie are not very cheesy but make the movie more authentic this way. Later on, more CGI is introduced, but in such manner that it feels everything is in place.

I strongly recommend everyone who have not seen this series to take time and see it. In my opinion, this is how the a good TV series should begin, evolve and end. And if you watch it all, take time and see SG Atlantis as well :)

3. Stargate: Atlantis (2004–2009)

TV-PG | 44 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

An international team of scientists and military personnel discover a Stargate network in the Pegasus Galaxy and come face-to-face with a new, powerful enemy: The Wraith.

Stars: Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, David Hewlett, Jason Momoa

Votes: 71,682

The premise of Atlantis is a continuation from the "Lost City" two-parter that ended Season 7 of SG1. Following further examination of the cave in which the Antarctic Stargate and Ayiana were found, Jackson discovers that the address to Atlantis is eight-symbol - that is, it is located in a whole new galaxy. Dr. Weir, the former head of the SGC, played by Tori Higginson, is appointed the head of the expedition, and some old favorites such as Dr. Rodney McKay return to the scene.

The newcomers are no less handy. Major (and later Colonel) John Sheppard, played by Joe Flanigan, is the junior (and then later senior) military leader of the Atlantis Expedition and possesses an uncanny talent to pilot or use anything that requires the use of the Ancient Technology Activation gene. Carson Beckett played by Paul McGillion, is the medical officer aboard the ship and has become a fan favorite for innumerable reasons.

Upon their arrival, they discover that Atlantis has almost completely run out of power and has been submerged under the sea. Not having enough power to activate a gate back home, they start looking for a way out within the new galaxy, and discover the Athosians, who tell them of a new enemy, the Wraith. Their leader, Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell), recognizes them as technological descendants of the Ancestors, as they refer to the Lantean Ancients, and believes that they have the power to stop them. Soon after, the team discover that the Wraith are waking up in droves and are a far greater threat than they envisioned - they were responsible for the extinction of the Ancients within the Pegasus galaxy. Much of the series revolves around trying to find ways to combat and destroy the Wraith.

Later on, new enemies are introduced, including a new variant of the human form replicators created by the Asgard - only this time they have very powerful Ancient technology which rivals that of the original Ancients. Later on, Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa), a Satedan fighting against the Wraith in vengeance for the destruction of his homeworld and the murder of his people, joins the Atlantis team.

A must see.

4. Stargate Universe (2009–2011)

TV-PG | 43 min | Drama, Sci-Fi

Trapped on an Ancient spaceship billions of light-years from home, a group of soldiers and civilians struggle to survive and find their way back to Earth.

Stars: Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque

Votes: 53,262

The tone of Stargate Universe is far darker than that of the two previous shows, it is also far less predictable. There is more character conflict, which helps create good suspense and drama. You don't know who can be trusted.

All in all, this is a very enjoyable ride that will have you at the edge of your seat, and leave you wanting more.

5. The Event (2010–2011)

TV-14 | 43 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

When a man goes looking for his missing girlfriend, he stumbles upon a government conspiracy that is bigger than the President himself.

Stars: Jason Ritter, Sarah Roemer, Ian Anthony Dale, Zeljko Ivanek

Votes: 26,583

The plot is not easy. This is not for casual viewing while you read a book. You will get lost. Whether the plane disappearing at the end of the pilot is "The Event" or not is not apparent through the first 4 episodes, but with each episode, the info that is revealed about the characters and situations in the show becomes more and more fascinating, and the suspense created by the lack of knowing who are the good guys and the bad guys continues to escalate.

The science fiction aspect with the aliens who landed in 1944 and are only 1% different from us in their DNA adds to the whole mystique and must surely be a tremendous key to the whole thing.
