10 Comedies that are the most Painful to Watch

by brtndr | created - 20 Aug 2012 | updated - 22 Aug 2012 | Public

While bad drama, romance, horror and action movies can still be entertaining to watch its bad attempt at trying to be good entertainment. Bad Comedies on the other hand, are pure torture to sit through, because you simply can't laugh at bad comedy. Otherwise, they wouldn't be bad comedy, even if you're laughing at how bad they are. Because in the end you're laughing. Which is what a comedy aims to accomplish no matter what you're laughing at. And since you can't cry or get scared either, then what you're left with is a very painfully unentertaining experience that you can't escape from while watching the movie. That's why watching really bad comedy results in lots-and-lots of pain and can't be enjoyed on any level.

1. Death to Smoochy (2002)

R | 109 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

38 Metascore

A kids' show host, Rainbow Randolph, is fired in disgrace while his replacement, Sheldon Mopes, A.K.A. Smoochy the Rhino, finds himself a rising star. Unfortunately for Sheldon, the business of kids' television isn't all child's play.

Director: Danny DeVito | Stars: Robin Williams, Edward Norton, Catherine Keener, Danny DeVito

Votes: 42,624 | Gross: $8.36M

If you weren't a clown hater before you saw this movie? You'll definitely be one after the first half hour of Death to Smoochy.

I had to sit through this movie because I actually purchased a ticket due to all the big stars that were involved with making this piece of painful garbage. That's why this film is number one on my list of painful comedies, because some poor sap will discover this movie while surfing for comedies on Netflix or at a video store in the future and say, "WOW, this movie stars Robin Williams and Ed Norton, and is directed by Danny DeVito!!! This has to be the best undiscovered, underrated comedy of the century."

Then end up in pain for the entire 109 minute movie run time in the belief that it has to get better due to all the funny people involved in making the movie.

Unfortunately, it only gets more-and-more painful for them as the movie gets worse-and-worse. Hopefully this review will save someone from having to endure the painful experience that I, and a few others were forced to endure when Death to Smoochy was originally released.

Instead of demanding my money back after Death to Smoochy eventually, and mercifully ended. I snuck into a re-release of Gladiator instead. Because DOG GONE IT! The movie industry owed me one.

2. Plump Fiction (1997)

R | 82 min | Comedy, Crime

Follows the plot of Pulp Fiction (1994). Scenes from other movies are also parodied.

Director: Bob Koherr | Stars: Tommy Davidson, Julie Brown, Paul Dinello, Sandra Bernhard

Votes: 4,026 | Gross: $0.07M

Do you like pain and have a good sense of humor at the same time? If so, then this movie was made especially for you. Your maladjusted desire to inflict pain onto yourself will be satisfied, as your well adjusted sense of humor is continually assaulted by lame jokes and uninspired crap. I can't watch this movie because I'm into experiencing pleasure by laughing at funny stuff.

However, if that kind of thing sounds too old fashion "normal" for you, and therefore just isn't your thing? Then I recommend purchasing Plump Fiction and putting it on a continuous loop.

3. Scary Movie 3 (2003)

PG-13 | 84 min | Comedy

49 Metascore

Cindy must investigate mysterious crop circles and video tapes, and help the President in preventing an alien invasion.

Director: David Zucker | Stars: Anna Faris, Charlie Sheen, Regina Hall, Pamela Anderson

Votes: 158,381 | Gross: $110.00M

Comedy sequels are usually painful experiences, and Scary Movie 3 is far more painful than Airplane II or any of the Naked Gun Sequels. It's hard to put it in words just how painful this movie is to watch. Some have suggested that being dissolved in a Alkali bath would be the most painful way to die, because you get the sensation of being burned alive, but your brain will continue working so you will feel every single burning pain that happens to your body. So just try to associate that with the experience of watching Scary Movie 3.

4. Jack and Jill (I) (2011)

PG | 91 min | Comedy

23 Metascore

Family guy, Jack Sadelstein, prepares for the annual event he always dreads--the Thanksgiving visit of his fraternal twin sister, the needy, and passive-aggressive Jill, who then refuses to leave.

Director: Dennis Dugan | Stars: Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes, Al Pacino, Elodie Tougne

Votes: 90,431 | Gross: $74.16M

I have yet to watch an Adam Sandler comedy were I haven't experienced at least some pain while watching the movie, and could easily just include every Adam Sandler comedy that was ever made on this list and be done with it. But, I'm just going to list the most painful Adam Sandler movie, and move on to other painful comedies instead.

5. The Flintstones (1994)

PG | 91 min | Comedy, Family, Fantasy

38 Metascore

In a parallel modern-day Stone Age world, a working-class family, the Flintstones, are set up for an executive job. But they learn that money can't buy happiness.

Director: Brian Levant | Stars: John Goodman, Rick Moranis, Rosie O'Donnell, Halle Berry

Votes: 86,542 | Gross: $130.51M

While the scenes with Halle Berry in revealing clothing does lessen the pain of watching this very bad comedy just a little bit. However, having to watch John Goodman and Rosie O'Donnell in revealing clothing cancels that out to such an extent, it actually increases the pain of watching this live action version of The Flintstones.

6. Corky Romano (2001)

PG-13 | 86 min | Comedy, Crime

20 Metascore

The loser son of a Mafia honcho must go undercover for the FBI.

Director: Rob Pritts | Stars: Chris Kattan, Peter Falk, Vinessa Shaw, Peter Berg

Votes: 13,738 | Gross: $23.98M

This should have been a straight to video production and placed in the self-help section. In case anyone wanted to know how to make a unfunny movie that is very painful to watch.

7. Norbit (2007)

PG-13 | 102 min | Comedy, Romance

27 Metascore

A mild-mannered guy, who is married to a monstrous woman, meets the woman of his dreams, and schemes to find a way to be with her.

Director: Brian Robbins | Stars: Eddie Murphy, Thandiwe Newton, Terry Crews, Clifton Powell

Votes: 79,771 | Gross: $95.67M

I am an Eddie Murphy fan. He has done some genius comedy in the past. That's why I was so surprised to see him star in and even write such a low level and painfully offensive comedy. An unoriginal and thoroughly uninspired painful peace of crap this movie is.

8. Cannonball Run II (1984)

PG | 108 min | Action, Comedy

13 Metascore

The original characters from The Cannonball Run (1981) race across the country once more in various cars and trucks.

Directors: Hal Needham, Ralph Bakshi | Stars: Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr.

Votes: 17,433 | Gross: $28.08M

Actually, I think this comedy is more of a painful sequel to watch than Scary Movie 3. However, because very few people saw the movie when it was originally released in 84', and is never broadcast anywhere today. And, it's pretty much forgotten about now. So, I don't think it's currently going to hurt very many people.

Therefore, I'm placing this comedy way down on my list of painful comedies to avoid. It's sort of the Mothman or the Bigfoot of painful comedies, in the sense that it's definitely a comedy that can hurt you very badly if you watch it. However, because the movie is such a rare sighting today, it's highly unlikely that you'll ever come into close enough contact with it for it to ever actually do any damage to you, or anyone that you know.

9. Death to the Supermodels (2005 Video)

R | 84 min | Comedy

This sexy comedy finds the world's greatest, most eccentric supermodels gathered on a deserted island for the swimsuit photo shoot from hell.

Director: Joel Silverman | Stars: Jaime Pressly, Brooke Burns, Taylor Negron, Matt Winston

Votes: 2,241

I was ready to turn this junk off after 5 minutes and that is some kind of a record for me. This "comedy" is absolutely painful to watch. Humor is as low quality as it gets with all those tired toilet jokes. One fart joke even lasts god knows how many minutes. I didn't laugh even once while watching this."

10. Beverly Hills Ninja (1997)

PG-13 | 88 min | Action, Comedy

27 Metascore

A man tries to rescue a woman with a little help from his half brother.

Director: Dennis Dugan | Stars: Chris Farley, Nicollette Sheridan, Robin Shou, Nathaniel Parker

Votes: 44,027 | Gross: $31.24M

How painful is this comedy you ask? I think I read somewhere that Chris Farley actually cried the first time he saw himself in this. Whether that's true or not? It should give you an idea of just how potentially painful this comedy is to watch, when the star of the movie begins weeping at the sight of himself in the movie. And that's after being paid a lot of money to star in it, and gets to watch the movie for free. Just think how painful it is for someone who has to pay their hard earned money to see the movie.
