I warmly recommend the first 10 of this list for a horror movie evening. The rest of the titles are a matter of taste.

1. Insidious (I) (2010)

It is a haunted house story with a twist. I like the use of music and that Wan was able to create frightening moments without the use of special effects. Acting is very good as well.
2. The Woman in Black (2012)

This movie is rated "12 and over" in germany which is a perfect display of how incapable authorities can be. Just because there is no blood does not mean that a 12 year old would not be severely disturbed after watching this. As for me I am very found of this movie. Daniel Radcliffe does a decent job and the scenery of early 20th century britain is the perfect setting for a gripping ghost story.
3. REC (2007)

This is a spanish production as far as I know but much better than the american remake. I am not a great fan of those "hand camera" movies but this one makes it just right. The female protagonist can be quite annoying but the end of the movie is one of the best horror scenes I know.
4. The Innkeepers (2011)

I do not understand why this movie has such a bad rating. Yes, the greater part of the movie is used to build up tension but isnt that the best part of a horror story? The setting of the story and the characters where very well chosen and the last 15 minutes of the movie where incredibly scary which does not mean that all that is before that point is a waste of time.
5. Sinister (I) (2012)

A controversial true-crime writer finds a box of Super 8 home movies in his new home, revealing that the murder case he is currently researching could be the work of an unknown serial killer whose legacy dates back to the 1960s.

This movie is more like a supernatural thriller. The scares a rare but very effective and the overall scenery compensates for the lack of scares. The end is very disappointing in my opinion, since the tension is built up ver carefully and than wasted by a very quick ending.
6. The Conjuring (2013)

From the makers of Insidious. Very well crafted but the end is a little bit to loud and does not match the slow buildup.
7. Drag Me to Hell (2009)

This movie is very entertaining though I suppose that the makers have some kind of oral fixation and should talk to somebody about it.
8. Trick 'r Treat (2007)

This movie is a collection of short stories which happen all at the same time in a remote town on halloween. This movie is not particulary scary but the stories a quite interesting and imaginative.

The acting is not the best and the story is pretty simple but it contains a lot of aspects that make a horror movie worth watching. Simple but entertaining.

Remake of a japanese Movie and all things considered very solid. The ending is very good as well
