He becomes a drunkard. Helen, failing to hear from him, comes to the city, where she secures a position. Harold decides to become a hold-up man. To pass away the time before midnight, he goes to a theater where Bert French and Alice Eis are presenting their famous "Vampire Dance." The characters are an artist and a vampire, in the guise of a wood nymph. Harold sees the artist attracted by the beautiful creature and then his struggles as he realizes what the result of the fascination must inevitably be. The victim beats her in his frenzy of fear, but is irresistibly drawn into the coils by the vampire's fiendish wiles. The vampire fascinates the man by her beauty and lures him toward a forest dell There the horrible creature succeeds in taking his life. Harold feels that a veil has been torn from his eyes. He seems to have reviewed his life with Sybil, and vows to reform. He succeeds in regaining his position and once more takes his place among men. The boy learns of Helen's presence in the city, but can find no trace of her. Sybil, learning of Harold's prosperity, attempts to drag him into her net once more, but the boy, with the memory of "The Vampire Dance" before him, resists her efforts. That night he finds Helen, and to insure his reformation, proposes immediate marriage. His sweetheart consents, and the knot is tied.

She flirts with many of the male guests idling at the Ives' Long Island house party, then encourages Terence O'Keefe, a playboy polo player from Ireland in New York to purchase horses for the British army, to rendezvous with her in the city, they are seen together at the "Midnight Frolic." Because of this, Mrs. Ives convinces Alice's newly-arrived sister Betty to look after Alice. Betty arranges for Terence to find her in an auto wreck where he revives her with a kiss. Genuinely in love with each other, they plan to marry, until the jealous Alice tells Betty that Terence "ruined" her. When Betty accuses Terence, he makes Alice confess her to her lies. Tom, encouraged by Terence's advice, overwhelms Alice with his "caveman" tactics. At the end, the servants, who have observed the upstairs activities, emulate their masters' flirting mannerisms.

Paurel becomes enchanted with Ethel, arousing the jealousy of the company's prima donna, Sabotini. When, after the first act, Ethel hears that Paurel has suffered an attack of the throat, she rushes backstage. Carlo, urged by Sabotini, follows and makes a scene, whereupon Ethel indignantly announces her engagement to Paurel. Paurel is unable to perform in the second act, and Carlo, taking his place, is vaulted to stardom. After Paurel is diagnosed as never being able to sing again, Bianca, a retired singer and Paurel's first love, reveals that Carlo is their son and pleads with the singer to give up Ethel for the boy's sake. After much soul-searching, Paurel refutes his selfish ways and agrees, thus freeing Ethel from her pledge to marry him.

Mrs. Jackson-Greer, a New York society matron, has occasion to note Max styling the hair of a town girl and induces him to come to New York and pose as a French count. There he meets April, Mrs. King's niece, and loses his heart to her, as well as to Kitty, now a showgirl. At the theater where Kitty is appearing Max is the best-dressed man in April's party, but later at a nightclub Kitty exposes him, and he is deserted by his society friends. Disillusioned, Max returns home at the request of his father. Soon Kitty follows, realizing that he is miserable without her.

The brother are both captivated by the charms of Carol Fleming (Louise Brooks), but Ralph is handicapped by hazing and strict training rules. On the eve of the big college race, Jim takes Carol to a dance and leaves Ralph burning with jealousy; deciding to brave official disapproval, Ralph goes to the dance and takes a jazzy young blonde to a roadhouse. Jim follows and ejects his brother after a fight and is himself found with the girl. After being acclaimed a hero, Ralph confesses that he is to blame for Jim's disgrace, and Carol finds happiness with the older brother.
