- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HardyWill PoulterA frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.**6 AWARDS**
*BEST PICTURE*
-This is the most competitive Best Picture race in recent memory. The three that are truly in contention are this, The Big Short, and Spotlight. The Revenant should have the benefit of Best Director and Actor, but the other two should pick up important screenplay awards. I'm going with The Revenant with a VERY SLIGHT edge over The Big Short.
*BEST DIRECTOR*
-With Ridley Scott not being nominated, this turned primarily into a race between Miller and Innarritu. I'm going with the latter since he won most of the precursor awards.
*BEST ACTOR-LEONARDO DICAPRIO*
-I'm pretty sure this will finally be Leo's year. He is pretty far ahead in the race, and Michael Fassbender seems like the only one who really has a chance at an upset.
*BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY*
-Emmanuel Lubezki should receive his third trophy in three years. Mad Max is the runner-up, but I would be surprised to see Lubezki lose here.
*BEST SOUND EDITING*
-This is a tough category to call every year. I'm giving The Revenant an edge over Mad Max, because a win here could help solidify Best Picture.
*BEST SOUND MIXING*
-When in doubt (I always am) choose the same film for sound editing and mixing. - DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.**4 AWARDS**
*BEST FILM EDITING*
-This is a tough race, but Mad Max's editing was something special. The Big Short's rapid, risky editing comes in second.
*BEST COSTUME DESIGN*
-I found this race very tough to call, and any of the nominees could win. I went with the film that has a chance at winning many technical categories and put Carol at #2.
*BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING*
-The Revenant could steal this one, but Mad Max has the best shot.
*BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN*
-This film's production design was beautiful and perfectly crafted. It gets the win over The Revenant. - DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside.*BEST ACTRESS-BRIE LARSON*
-This was close between Larson and Saoirse Ronan about a month ago. Now it's pretty much Larson's to lose. - DirectorRyan CooglerStarsMichael B. JordanSylvester StalloneTessa ThompsonThe former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa serves as a trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed.*BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR-SYLVESTER STALLONE*
-Literally any of the five nominees could win this one. I'm giving Stallone a very small lead over Mark Rylance because it seems like a lot of people in Hollywood and out want him to win. - DirectorTom HooperStarsEddie RedmayneAlicia VikanderAmber HeardA fictitious love story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Lili and Gerda's marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili's groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.*BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS*
-At one time, all of the acting categories seemed unpredictable. Now, they all seem mostly locked up. This is no different. Kate Winslet has received some love lately, so she's the runner-up. - DirectorTom McCarthyStarsMark RuffaloMichael KeatonRachel McAdamsThe true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core.*BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY*
-Spotlight is the clear frontrunner here. This may be surprising, but if any film pulls off an upset, I think it will be Inside Out. - DirectorAdam McKayStarsChristian BaleSteve CarellRyan GoslingIn 2006-2007 a group of investors bet against the United States mortgage market. In their research, they discover how flawed and corrupt the market is.*BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY*
-This script was both witty and informative, and the film is picking up speed in the awards races. Carol is probably next in the running, but it was not nominated for Best Picture like The Big Short was. - DirectorPete DocterRonnie Del CarmenStarsAmy PoehlerBill HaderLewis BlackAfter young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.*BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM*
-This is the biggest certainty at the Oscars this year. The chances of Anomalisa pulling off an upset are extremely small. - DirectorAsif KapadiaStarsAmy WinehouseMitch WinehouseMark RonsonArchival footage and personal testimonials present an intimate portrait of the life and career of British singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse.*BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE*
-I originally had The Look of Silence here because it sounds like most consider it the best in the field. But Amy is so popular that I changed my mind. - DirectorLászló NemesStarsGéza RöhrigLevente MolnárUrs RechnA Jewish-Hungarian concentration camp prisoner sets out to give a child he mistook for his son a proper burial.*BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM*
-This has been the favorite for a long time. Mustang is pretty much the only film that can contend. - DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacAs a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.*BEST VISUAL EFFECTS*
-Mad Max had some outstanding practical effects. The Revenant had the best CGI. Star Wars implemented both effectively. - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsSamuel L. JacksonKurt RussellJennifer Jason LeighIn the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.*BEST ORIGINAL SCORE*
-Ennio Morricone gets the win over fellow legend John Williams here. - DirectorKirby DickStarsAndrea PinoAnnie ClarkClaire PotterAn exposé of rape crimes on U.S. college campuses, their institutional cover-ups, and the devastating toll they take on students and their families.*BEST ORIGINAL SONG-TIL IT HAPPENS TO YOU*
-This seems like the strongest bet in a pretty weak category. Writing's on the Wall could easily win as well, especially after winning the Golden Globe. - DirectorBasil KhalilStarsMaria ZreikHuda Al ImamShady SrourThe silent routine of 5 Nuns living in the West Bank wilderness is disturbed when an Israeli settler family breaks down right outside the convent just as the Sabbath comes into effect.*BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT*
-I haven't had a chance to catch these, but this sounds like the likely winner, with Shok not far behind. - DirectorSanjay PatelStarsBrent SchraffSunny Singh AttarArun RaoSanjay loves cartoons and comics, while his father tries to draw him into his Hindu traditions. Reluctance turns into awe-inspiring adventure as the boy embarks on an amazing journey, returning with a new perspective they can both embrace.*BEST ANIMATED SHORT*
-Bear Story was by far the best film here, but Disney and Pixar are as big a monster in this category as they are in the Animated Feature category. They tend to pull out the win even when they are undeserving (just look to last year for an example.) - DirectorDavid DargBody Team 12 is tasked with collecting the dead at the height of the Ebola outbreak. These body collectors have arguably the most dangerous and gruesome job in the world. Yet despite the strain they emerge as heroes while the film explores their philosophy and strength.*BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT*
-Honestly just going off of what I've heard here.
