Over 125 of the Most Intelligent TV Dramas

by stephanieericsson | created - 21 Nov 2015 | updated - 27 Sep 2016 | Public

If you're tired of being treated like an idiot audience by network execs, then you'll like this list. I want tour de force, well-scripted, intelligent shows with unpredictable plots, complex characters & renegade direction. Shows that take risks to create exceptional television. Many are British, Canadian or Aussie. It's all drama, suspense, mystery but no zombies, vampires or super heroes. 1998 to 2016 in no particular order after the first 15. Feel free to comment but please be polite.

Stars: Alexander Dreymon, Eliza Butterworth, Arnas Fedaravicius, Mark Rowley

Votes: 165,795

Excellent. All around. I'm a big fan of Bernard Cornwell's books, so this was a shoo-in for me and it didn't disappoint except that the first season was too short.

Stars: Khandi Alexander, Rob Brown, Kim Dickens, Melissa Leo

Votes: 15,906

Great in the first season. When John Goodman leaves the cast, it loses a little momentum, but the writers develop the lesser characters, played by an excellent cast, who really step us and shine.

108. The Last Enemy (2008)

60 min | Adventure, Drama, Mystery

Britain has been transformed into a security state. A mathematical genius's search for the truth about his brother's death catapults him into a conspiracy and a love affair.

Benedict Cumberbatch is superb in this thriller set in the near future where being 'safe' from terrorism has been used to form a totalitarian State.

109. The Following (2013–2015)

A brilliant, charismatic, and psychotic serial killer communicates with other active serial killers and activates a cult of believers who follow his every command.

Stars: Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy, Shawn Ashmore, Valorie Curry

Votes: 91,502

This series had me hooked. Kevin Bacon & James Purefoy are spellbinding pitted against each other. Purefoy outstandingly pulls off a plausible portrayal of the charismatic serial killer with a cult following & Bacon demonstrates his breadth as an actor as the flawed, tenacious FBI agent with a complicated, personal stake in catching him.

At the 3rd season, this series falls to my "Should have quit while they were ahead" list.

110. Banished (2015)

TV-MA | 60 min | Drama, History

British convicts have been sent to Australia as punishment for their crimes. As they try to live their new lives, they have to live with the new rules. The soldiers also have to adjust.

Stars: Orla Brady, Ewen Bremner, MyAnna Buring, Ryan Corr

Votes: 4,164

A new series by Jimmy McGovern, (Cracker, The Lakes, The Accused), I've added it here after only the first episode, something I rarely do. Set in Australia in the 1800s, it's about the first English penal colony, it's a seven part series with great potential.

111. The Frankenstein Chronicles (2015–2017)

TV-MA | 48 min | Crime, Drama, Fantasy

Inspector John Marlott investigates a series of crimes in 19th Century London, which may have been committed by a scientist intent on re-animating the dead.

Stars: Sean Bean, Richie Campbell, Tom Ward, Ryan Sampson

Votes: 12,300

For lovers of Gothic literature, variations on Mary Shelly's idea are always intriguing. This seems to be done with some intelligence too.

Caveat: Given that he's the main character, I doubt Sean Bean will die in this mini-series until the last episode... ;-D

112. The Game (2014–2015)

59 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

A Cold War spy thriller that tells the story of invisible wars fought by MI5.

Stars: Tom Hughes, Jonathan Aris, Victoria Hamilton, Shaun Dooley

Great Cold War thriller. But, then, I'm a big Brian Cox fan.

Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rebecca Hall, Roger Allam, Adelaide Clemens

Votes: 10,745

5-part BBC series for all you Benedict Cumberbatch fans.

114. Rome (2005–2007)

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Drama, Romance

A down-to-earth account of the lives of both illustrious and ordinary Romans set in the last days of the Roman Republic.

Stars: Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson, Polly Walker, Kerry Condon

Votes: 185,434

If you liked "I, Claudius" then Rome will be a feast. They made a successful attempt at authenticity and historical accuracy, but more importantly, this series is character-driven with superb acting from the whole cast. Its genius is that it follows common folk as well as the nobility so that we come to know that period in history in a new way. Even more brilliant was that the writers, directors and actors made me love the villains (and villainesses) as much as the heroes, (though I confess, Pullo (Ray Stevenson) was my favorite and I couldn't wait to see what Ian McNeice as The Newsreader was going to do next.) Although not a comedy by any means, there was still plenty of choice lines that made me laugh out loud, including the last line of the final episode. Don't miss this series.

115. The Corner (2000)

TV-MA | 63 min | Crime, Drama

Chronicles a West Baltimore family living in poverty on the front lines of America's drug war.

Stars: T.K. Carter, Khandi Alexander, Sean Nelson, Clarke Peters

Votes: 5,507

116. Billions (2016–2023)

TV-MA | 60 min | Drama

New money means no mercy as Mike Prince takes the Axe Capital throne. Chuck Rhoades is convinced no one should have that much wealth - or power. As all the players seek out new alliances, only one thing's for certain - wealth means war.

Stars: Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Maggie Siff, David Costabile

Votes: 109,539

“ This one gets 9 stars right out of the gate. This series is sterling on all fronts--writing, directing, acting--for the entire season. How can you go wrong with Paul Giamatti, Maggie Siff and Damian Lewis?

9 stars.

117. The Girlfriend Experience (2016–2021)

TV-MA | 30 min | Drama

Stars: Riley Keough, Paul Sparks, Julia Goldani Telles, Mary Lynn Rajskub

Votes: 11,865

Sophisticated and intelligent. Intriguing, intimate approach without the cliche Hollywood glitz. The sex scenes further the plot without being gratuitous or exploitative, The script and acting employ subtlety and nuance without being obtuse. This could be a great series.

9 stars.

118. 11.22.63 (2016)

TV-MA | 60 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance

Jake Epping, a teacher, gets a chance to travel back in time to avert the death of John F. Kennedy. However, history's aversion to alteration and his love for the era and a woman endanger him.

Stars: James Franco, Sarah Gadon, George MacKay, Chris Cooper

Votes: 99,359

Great premise. Franco is really good, getting better with time. I was hooked after the pilot because the premise is fascinating. The consequences of trying to change the past to save the future seem to be what drives each episode. It's an interesting concept that the past fights back. With pros like Bridget Carpenter & Stephen King writing the screenplays, I'll bet on this one to be a winner.

9 stars.

119. The Night Manager (2016–2024)

TV-14 | 346 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

The night manager of a Cairo hotel is recruited to infiltrate an arms dealer's inner circle.

Stars: Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki, Olivia Colman

Votes: 103,200

Staying true to Le Carre's novel, this series is tight, taunt, tense and masterfully done by all the players--including writer David Farr and director Susanne Bier. Hugh Laurie is especially believable as Roper--a role that can only be played right by an actor with power. The rest of the cast is equally superb. One of the best of 2016 so far.

9 stars

120. Horace and Pete (2016)

TV-MA | 44 min | Comedy, Drama

Louis C.K.'s Eugene O'Neill-esque dramatic web series about two cousins, introverted Horace and mentally ill Pete, the current owners of their family's Irish bar "Horace and Pete's", and their dysfunctional family and friends.

Stars: Louis C.K., Steve Buscemi, Edie Falco, Steven Wright

Votes: 17,569

There isn't a name for the genre of H & P -- a contemporary Chekhov? IDK. What it IS is brilliant. Louis C.K.'s genius for both dialogue and the dynamics between characters, (played by a revolving cast of the best actors in the biz), the relevance of the topics, the extreme intimacy of the emotions and secrets revealed all come together on basically one stage--the Irish pub, Horace & Pete's. You have to watch it to understand why it's not easily described. It's most definitely FRESH and unlike any other TV show I've seen. I'm hooked and can't wait for the next episode.

9 stars.

121. Jack Irish (2016–2021)

Not Rated | 52 min | Crime, Drama

Stars: Guy Pearce, Aaron Pedersen, Roy Billing, Damien Garvey

Votes: 3,353

Spin off of the Jack Irish movies with all of the same colorful characters (many played by the same actors) that Aussies have come to love. Great writing, acting & directing.

8 1/2 stars.

122. Animal Kingdom (2016–2022)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama

Centers on a Southern California family, whose excessive lifestyle is fueled by their criminal activities.

Stars: Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, Finn Cole

Votes: 43,662

Gritty, tightly scripted, sterling acting & direction. Constant tension kept me on the edge of my seat.

The story is based on the Oscar-nominated 2010 thriller of the same title written by David Michôd's, who is also writer, director and executive producer with Jonathan Lisco (Halt and Catch Fire, Southland).

I've seen the film recently and this series is both different and even better. Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders) as the main character is riveting, making me care about him from the very first scene. Ellen Barkin is perfect as the maternal head of these surfing gangsters. Shawn Hatosy (Southland) as Pope, is menacing as the ticking time bomb. Scott Speedman (Last Resort) as Baz anchors this turbulent crime family. This show goes to the top of my list for the summer shows.

Series Premiere Tue, Jun 14 at 9:00 PM on TNT or catch it on Amazon.

9 stars.

123. Versailles (2015–2018)

TV-MA | 60 min | Biography, Drama, History

Stars: George Blagden, Alexander Vlahos, Tygh Runyan, Stuart Bowman

Votes: 18,716

Excellent in every aspect. Great characters and, of course, gorgeous surroundings. One of the best historical dramas I've ever seen.

10 stars.

124. No Offence (I) (2015–2018)

TV-MA | 42 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Follows a group of police officers on the front line wondering what they did to end up where they are now, on the ugly side of Manchester.

Stars: Joanna Scanlan, Elaine Cassidy, Will Mellor, Paul Ritter

Votes: 6,722

If you don't get dark, twisted, sardonic British humor, you'll miss the major appeal of this female gang of coppers. All are wildly flawed and brilliant at the same time. Great acting, writing (the best dialogue I've heard in ages) and direction.

9 stars.

125. Jessica Jones (2015–2019)

TV-MA | 56 min | Action, Crime, Drama

Following the tragic end of her brief superhero career, Jessica Jones tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator, dealing with cases involving people with remarkable abilities in New York City.

Stars: Krysten Ritter, Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville, Carrie-Anne Moss

Votes: 226,803

Fantastic premise and plot. Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones is very believable as is David Tennant as the evil Kilgrave. I'm not normally a fan of super-hero stories, but this series by Netflix is well done, although a couple of episodes too long.

8 stars.

126. Marco Polo (2014–2016)

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, "Marco Polo" is based on the famed explorer's adventures in Kublai Khan's court in 13th century Mongolia.

Stars: Lorenzo Richelmy, Benedict Wong, Joan Chen, Remy Hii

Votes: 78,691

The opening scene in the first episode of Season 2 is a spectacular start to an even better season--as long as you don't expect historical accuracy. Benedict Wong who plays Kubla Khan is absolutely brilliant.

SEASON 2 starts 7/1

10 stars.
