- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsJulianne MooreClive OwenChiwetel EjioforIn 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have somehow become infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea. This film is a real masterpiece. Clive Owen is at his best & really takes the viewer w/ him throughout the film. Owen and Caine are great. Casting the right lead for this film was imperative & Clive Owen's talents are really showcased. I feel it important that a film is one you can & want to watch often and this is definitely one of them. This also is the only movie I can think of that is far better then the book. I would not recommend reading it. The movie has amazing locations, cinematography, story adaptation & acting - right on down to the key grips & gaffers.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsJason StathamRay LiottaAndré 3000Gambler Jake Green enters into a game with potentially deadly consequences. It took me a while to come around to watching this film. I saw it a year after it hit the shelf & I have watched it many times since - Buying for my collection as well. The 3rd film by Guy Ritchie & full of amazing actors, fresh, smart story that was doomed to "Direct to Video" when no major studio in the USA picked it up. This is Guy Ritchie's smartest film to date. Andre 3000 is amazing in this film. It is also important to mention Mark Strong. An actor like Jason Statham that owes much to Guy Ritchie's ability to spot talented actors & put them in versatile roles. This has a smart theme, if you don't enjoy thinking and rewatching films to discover new things then this is not a film for you. This is a very underrated & underappreciated works of Art and is Guy Ritchie's best writing!
- DirectorChristopher MorrisStarsWill AdamsdaleRiz AhmedAdeel AkhtarFour incompetent British terrorists set out to train for and commit an act of terror. An International Film (British). Saw a trailer for this film and was curious. It is a dark comedy that's a hilarious satire about terrorism. This is a really funny tragic tale. Loved it. If you have a good sense of humour and don't mind British films - you will enjoy it to. Women won't enjoy this film. My son was 14 or 15 when I watched it w/ him and he loved it. It kept him watching and not watching while playing games on his phone etc. Kids have a very short attention span, so if you see them invest in something completely you know it's great.
- DirectorBrad AndersonStarsKate BeckinsaleJim SturgessDavid ThewlisAn Oxford graduate takes up a job in a mental asylum, only to discover that the "revolutionary" new treatments are inhumane, and that there is more going on than meets the eye.A really great film that you might not have heard of. I have seen it listed under a different title on some sites. I stumbled on a leaked copy of this film & was really surprised how such a great film w/ a great Cast and fresh story got so little "ink" Kate Beckinsale is great. Jim Sturgess is a very underrated actor & Ben Kingsley is amazing as always. Michael Caine has a small role but always delivers. This film is packed w/ small twists and has a wonderful storyline, great climax and resolution. Film for men or women & Mature teens.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu.A Dark, drama/comedy/fantasy. It is a fresh story w/ great characters that are all played masterfully by reliable actors like, Woody Harrelson, Chris Walken; Sam Rockwell is a standout in the midst of many great established actors. It's a polarizing film. You will either love it or hate it.
- DirectorJacques AudiardStarsTahar RahimNiels ArestrupAdel BencherifA delinquent Muslim man struggles to get by in prison until he is taken under the wing of a powerful mob boss. But his gradual rise through the mob's ranks brings him in conflict with his mentor.A man enters prison a second class citizen because he is a Muslim. He has to do a job & he waits, watches and learns. He is young, smart, ambitious but doesn't mind getting his hands dirty if it keeps him from his ultimate goal. This is a Must See film for any Film Geek like me. International Film (France/Corsican french subs)
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsChris EvansJamie BellTilda SwintonIn a future where a failed climate change experiment has killed all life except for the survivors who boarded the Snowpiercer (a train that travels around the globe), a new class system emerges. There is so much I could tell you in regards to this film. I will touch base more when I have my blog up and running. I will say it is by far Chris Evans best role - though Puncture is another film he dominates throughout. Another fresh storyline w/ so many references to things we are dealing w/ in the world or will be in the future. Great cast, directing & cinematography. Another underrated film that got deliberately sabotaged by Harvey Weinstein because the director would not do his bidding at the cost of his vision. (Change the End) This is a polarizing film. Tilda Swinton is great too. I think most people that don't like this film aren't smart enough. This isn't written down to a grade 6 reading level which is the standard in the film industry. The ending isn't rainbows and puppy dogs. I have seen this film several times and the Cinematography, Lighting, editing & masterfully choreographed action sequences in narrow train cars filled w/ people. (In reality a studio set) This is a story of redemption, humanity & is a perfect metaphor for the current & ever growing class divide in the world.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingCarey MulliganBryan CranstonA mysterious Hollywood action film stuntman gets in trouble with gangsters when he tries to help his neighbor's husband rob a pawn shop while serving as his getaway driver.A true work of art. I can say nothing negative about the film. The uniquest & by far the smartest car chase shot for cinema. Fresh story. Great adaptation from the book. This film has no fluff. Gosling's acting is amazing & Nicolas Refn... doesn't disappoint. Oscar Issac is great supporting. Nicholas likes to use as little dialogue as possible, which makes everything that is said really powerful! It also has the effect of adding a sense of mystery around this "shadowy" Driver. The music & film scores is award worthy. I love the cinematography, costumes, cars etc. The directing is top notch. This film cleaned up when it was taken on the festival circuit but had too much violence to ever be considered for an Oscar - a prime example of why films that win Oscars are usually garbage. This film is a a masterpiece! Great first date film. If she's cool she will like it if she hates it then hit it and quit it. Jks It's really a masterpiece - which is very rare these days.
- DirectorPeter BergStarsMark WahlbergTaylor KitschEmile HirschMarcus Luttrell and his team set out on a mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shah, in late June 2005. Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives in one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare.A disgracefully under-appreciated film. Better then Hurt Locker (Oscar Winner) or American Sniper (Oscars) Not knocking Cooper's acting but Eastwood butchered the film and abandoned the book. Actually it does not seem like he even read it (The film or Eastwood's adaptation is almost all fiction & the book is a true account and therefore non fiction)Back to the movie at hand. I have read both books and seen both films and w/out any question, Lone Survivor is the best war movie about the Afghan / Iraq war era. Also one of the best of all time. Amazing casting, acting and directing. I always say read the books. The scenes where they jump down and role are crazy and I have no clue how Peter Berg managed to shoot them.
- DirectorMike CahillStarsMichael PittSteven YeunAstrid Bergès-FrisbeyA molecular biologist and his laboratory partner uncover evidence that may fundamentally change society as we know it.A definite cult film that is a great movie to watch on a date if you know it's a flick you both like. This is a very smart film that touches on many topics. It brings, science, faith, religion & the fact that regardless what you believe, that in the end none of us truly know. This is another Original story and has one of the best climax & resolutions in film. A great treat indeed.
- DirectorFrank MillerQuentin TarantinoRobert RodriguezStarsMickey RourkeClive OwenBruce WillisAn exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption. Most people have probably seen this. The 1st scene w/ Josh Hartnett was made by Robert Rodriguez to show Frank Miller that in fact it was possible to take his graphic novel & adapt it to film w/out losing it's artistic integrity. The only bad thing I can say about it is Alba's Nancy character. A stripper who was supposed to be bare chested but would only do it if she could stay clothed. No stripper leaves everything on and seeing how her character was something all the guys were nuts over it is ridiculous that she remain fully clothed. Only poor casting and neg. thing I can say. Actually, Rosario Dawson's hair and costume are not flattering for such a gorgeous lady. Those things are pretty small but I am really picky.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.Have always loved this franchise. I had been really looking forward to this film. I did worry that w/ the big budget Miller was going to CGI the heck out of it. This did not happen. In my mind Hardy was the only man for the job of Max & he was definitely true to the character while adding a bit of his own style to it. No real script - the story is fueled by acting and action over dialogue. I love films where the main protagonist is a person of few words. If you love the franchise you love this one too. I have heard a few critical of it but I would say that if you don't at least like this Mad Max then you have terrible taste and I really don't want you watching any of my suggested films. I really mean that.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsGerard ButlerLena HeadeyDavid WenhamIn the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. They face insurmountable odds when they are betrayed by a Spartan reject.A great film w/ an amazing cast. Graphic Novels like this have shown to be far better then their superhero comic counterparts (Deadpool the acception). This film was shot all w/ a green screen in Quebec Canada. It looks amazing. If you think about getting into a character or scene w/ nothing but a costume and green screen you can really appreciate the amazing acting and flawless visual effects.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsNaomi WattsViggo MortensenArmin Mueller-StahlA teenager who dies during childbirth leaves clues in her journal that could tie her child to a rape involving a violent Russian mob family.Great film directed by a fellow Canadian. It stars Viggo & Watts. This like all the others on the list are fresh stories, have great characters and storylines. This film touches on the long standing Russian tradition of The Thieves in Law (look up spelling for russian translation). This really is an amazing film. It just touches on the tradition of tattoos that started long ago (still used but much differently) Tattoos all have meaning and tell a criminals story if you can read them. There is a great russian documentary (The Mark of Cain) that talks a little more about this.
- DirectorTony ScottStarsChristian SlaterPatricia ArquetteDennis HopperIn Detroit, a pop-culture nerd steals cocaine from his new wife's pimp and tries to sell it in Hollywood, prompting the mobsters who own the drugs to pursue the couple.Great film. Written by Tarantino who used the $50 000 he got to make Reservoir Dogs. The script was rarely altered - including music. The scene where Clarence's father (Hopper) is interrogated by the mob underboss (Walken) is considered one of the best movie scenes ever. This is a great film to watch on a date to help impress a girl w/ style. Gary Oldman shows why he is such an important actor. Slater is amazing. Pitt as Floyd takes a bit part and makes it a memorable character. It is a love story w/out all the Hollywood gloss and cheese. It reflects real love as being tough dirty and hard work. Love is never perfect or easy and it can hurt but if it's true then you are willing to do whatever it takes. Still one of my favourite films of all time.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonEthan HawkeScott GlennA rookie cop spends his first day as a Los Angeles narcotics officer with a rogue detective who isn't what he appears to be.Great film. A great Denzel & Hawke acting job. Fresh story. Great directing by an underrated director. Must see
- DirectorGregory HoblitStarsRichard GereLaura LinneyEdward NortonAn altar boy is accused of murdering a priest, and the truth is buried several layers deep.A great Gere film & amazing thriller w/ a young Ed Norton
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsRichard GereDon CheadleEthan HawkeThree unconnected Brooklyn cops wind up at the same deadly location after enduring vastly different career paths.Great film w/ inter-woven stories. Just an amazingly written and directed films. Though the genre is not new the story is. Great casting and Acting. I really enjoy this film, by an under used Director
- DirectorKarel van BellingenStarsSimon MerrellsAlix Wilton ReganKatie GunbyLondon, 2084. An interstellar migration cop's fateful encounter with a young prostitute leads to a violent shot at redemption.By Chance I stumbled across this Short Film. It is only a half hour but well worth the watch. This is a film you would want to make a feature length picture. The story that is told in such a short period is a great one. Everyone watches crappy films sometimes. Do yourself a favour and invest a 1/2hr of your life to see something cool.
- DirectorAlex GibneyAn in-depth look at the unsolved 1994 Loughinisland massacre, where six Irishmen were murdered, presumably by a Unionist paramilitary group, while watching the World Cup at the local pub in Loughinisland, Northern Ireland.
- DirectorAlex GibneyStarsDavid SangerEmad KiyaeiEric ChienA documentary focused on Stuxnet, a piece of self-replicating computer malware that the U.S. and Israel unleashed to destroy a key part of an Iranian nuclear facility, and which ultimately spread beyond its intended target.
