- DirectorWalter MurchStarsFairuza BalkNicol WilliamsonJean MarshDorothy, saved from a psychiatric experiment by a mysterious girl, is somehow called back to Oz when a vain witch and the Nome King destroy everything that makes the magical land beautiful. The 80s were a weird time. This was a Disney movie about The Wizard of Oz and barely anyone even talks about it. It's pretty crazy, but I think it's a better Oz adaptation than the classic Judy Garland film.
- DirectorWillard HuyckStarsLea ThompsonJeffrey JonesTim RobbinsA sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his homeworld to Earth where he must stop an alien invasion with the help of a nerdy scientist and a struggling female rock singer. You know, for supposedly one of the worst movies of all time, it's really not that bad. If you wanted to watch a bad movie, this should definitely be the one. Watching the BTS featurettes, you can tell this was a labor of love, and it's really enjoyable. Sure it's a ridiculous movie, but the source material is just as ridiculous. They were trying to be faithful.
- DirectorJon AmielStarsBill MurrayJoanne WhalleyPeter GallagherWallace Ritchie is mistaken for a spy and must stop a plot to assassinate international leaders at a banquet. This movie isn't a laugh riot or anything, but the whole concept of the movie is just hilarious, so if you're like me you'll be laughing the whole time... basically in awe at how nuts it is. It's also classic Murray, so that's enjoyable on it's own. All I'm going to say is that it's Bill Murray in a spy comedy movie, but in reality it's so much more.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsGriffin DunneRosanna ArquetteVerna BloomAn ordinary word processor has the worst night of his life after he agrees to visit a girl in Soho he met that evening at a coffee shop.WatchMojo called this the number one most underrated movie between the 80s and 2010s, which is kind of an oxymoronic statement, but whatever. They're right. I had never even heard of this movie, I just stumbled upon it on IMDb and wow is it insane. Non-stop ridiculous from start to finish. Not much I can say about it without fear of spoiling it, so all I'll say is that if you've seen The Out-of-Towners (the original), it's like that movie on drugs.
- DirectorTom StoppardStarsGary OldmanTim RothRichard DreyfussTwo minor characters from the play 'Hamlet' stumble around unaware of their scripted lives and unable to deviate from them.Wow, did this movie go over my head. Loved it, though. The parts I understood I really enjoyed. Not much happens in it but that's what makes it so good. It's enjoyable without having anything happen.
- DirectorBobcat GoldthwaitStarsBobcat GoldthwaitJulie BrownBruce BaumShakes is good at his job as party clown - when he's sober and shows up. Five druggy clowns frame him for the murder of his boss.I don't even know what the *beep* this is. I mean Tom Kenny and Adam Sandler were in this? What...
- DirectorGus Van SantStarsElias McConnellAlex FrostEric DeulenSeveral ordinary high school students go through their daily routine as two others prepare for something more malevolent. An interesting look at school-shootings. Very chilling.
- DirectorWilliam DearStarsJohn LithgowMelinda DillonMargaret LangrickThe Henderson family adopt a friendly Sasquatch but have a hard time trying to keep the legend of 'Bigfoot' a secret.Everyone knows the scene at the end, but it still got me even though I knew it was there. This movie is really emotional, man :,(
- DirectorLisanne PajotJames SwirskyStarsJonathan BlowBrandon BoyerRenaud BédardA documentary that follows the journeys of indie game developers as they create games and release those works, and themselves, to the world.Damn... being a game designer is depressing. The way I see it, this movie shows an interesting perspective of small-scale internet fame. Much like the movie Please Subscribe, but this is from a different type of micro-celebrity. Very interesting to see how these regular people deal with the stress that goes along with it.
- DirectorKenneth JohnsonStarsFisher StevensMichael McKeanTim BlaneyRobot Johnny Five comes to the city and gets manipulated by criminals who want him for their own purposes.Damn man, how do these family comedy movies from the 80s keep making me tear up?
- DirectorByron HowardRich MooreJared BushStarsGinnifer GoodwinJason BatemanIdris ElbaIn a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.Obviously, this movie is already critically-acclaimed, so I don't really need to recommend it. I just thought I'd add it to the list because it really is a great film and you need to watch it if you haven't.
- DirectorJordan RubinStarsRachel MelvinCortney PalmLexi AtkinsA fun weekend turns into madness and horror for a bunch of groupies looking for fun in a beaver infested swamp. How the *beep* does this have such a *beep* rating on here? This movie is amazing. It's insane. It's ridiculous. Don't watch Sharknado, or Piranha 3D, or any of that *beep* Watch Zombeavers. This is horror-comedy done so, so right.
- DirectorAaron HannMario MiscioneStarsAllegra MastersAimee McKayAshley KeyHeld captive and faced with their imminent executions, fifty strangers are forced to choose the one person among them who deserves to live.If you liked Exam, this is like that except with much higher stakes and a much better twist. The year isn't over, but I'm already predicting this will be my favorite movie I'll see this year.
- DirectorGabriela CowperthwaiteStarsTilikumDave DuffusSamantha BergA documentary following the controversial captivity of killer whales, and its dangers for both humans and whales. It's been a while since a movie has made me cry, but this documentary was so powerful. The descriptions of the people involved in the tragedies mentioned are just haunting. This is a must-watch, solely because people need to know about what has happened.
- DirectorTrey ParkerStarsTrey ParkerMatt StoneElle RussPopular Broadway actor Gary Johnston is recruited by the elite counter-terrorism organization Team America: World Police. As the world begins to crumble around him, he must battle with terrorists, celebrities and falling in love.Holy *beep* the songs in this movie. As a whole, it was pretty funny but the songs just made it so much better. This might be my favorite thing Trey Parker and Matt Stone have done.
- DirectorBobby FarrellyPeter FarrellyStarsJack BlackGwyneth PaltrowJason AlexanderA shallow man falls in love with a 300-pound woman because of her inner beauty. While some parts can feel a little insensitive, others feel the exact opposite. Shallow Hal is a movie about acceptance, and I think it does a nice job of showing it... most of the time. If you like the Farley Brothers, definitely check this out. It might be my favorite film I've seen from them.
- DirectorAnders Thomas JensenStarsNikolaj Lie KaasMads MikkelsenLine KruseTwo Danish friends are tired of their employer and open their own butcher shop. An electrician accidentally dies in the freezer and he's sold as marinated chicken and business picks up. What happens when they run out of "chicken"?This went in a direction I was not expecting. A kind of odd direction for a movie like this. Hey, if you like the show Hannibal then you can watch this and pretend it's a prequel (even though that show in itself was already supposed to be a prequel to Silence of the Lambs, but whatever).
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.I'm not sure what this movie was, but it was interesting. Really *beep* weird. I have a pretty much spoiler-free in-depth review on my "Movies I've Seen in 2015" list if you're interested.
- DirectorTom TykwerLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsTom HanksHalle BerryHugh GrantAn exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.I don't know if it's a good movie. I read a Youtube comment making a pretty good case for why it's not. But, I think it's definitely enjoyable. The way the movie is shown can be a little odd and confusing, but it works. It's a very interesting storytelling process.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsSigourney WeaverWilliam HurtJoaquin PhoenixA series of events tests the beliefs of a small isolated countryside village.A little slow at first, but it picks up about half-way through and really pays off. It's filled with faces you'll probably recognize but that you didn't know were in this movie. This is an M. Night Shyamalan movie too, so of course there's going to be twists and such, but I think he did a good job with them.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittLukas HaasEmilie de RavinA teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend.I didn't actually love this film, because I kind of got lost and ended up not completely following the story. The director Rian Johnson did an amazing job with this though, I think. It was just so visually and tonally appealing to me. I looked him up on here and it turns out he also directed one of the most famous Breaking Bad episodes, Ozymandias, as well as my favorite Breaking Bad episode, Fly. He'll also be directing Star Wars: Episode VIII so I'm really excited to see that. I'm sure he'll do an amazing job with that as well, but for the mean time just watch this and enjoy his directorial work.
- DirectorPeter AtencioStarsKeegan-Michael KeyJordan PeeleTiffany HaddishWhen the adorable kitten of an L.A. crime kingpin unexpectedly enters the life of two cousins, they will have to go through tough gangs, pitiless hit-men, and ruthless drug dealers who all claim him, to get him back. How hard can it be?
- DirectorJon TurteltaubStarsSandra BullockBill PullmanPeter GallagherA hopelessly romantic Chicago Transit Authority ticket booth operator is mistaken for the fiancée of a comatose patient.
- DirectorNima NourizadehStarsThomas MannOliver CooperJonathan Daniel BrownThree high-school seniors throw a birthday party to make a name for themselves. As the night progresses, things spiral out of control as word of the party spreads.
- DirectorPaul VerhoevenStarsPeter WellerNancy AllenDan O'HerlihyIn a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories.
