1. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

PG | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

82 Metascore

After the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Director: Irvin Kershner | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Votes: 1,380,932 | Gross: $290.48M

There is a debate going on as to whether or not this is the best or the original Star Wars is the superior movie. To my mind there is no contest. It is in this movie that the characters that were introduced in the first film truly came to life and became people that I was invested in. The interactions were just so crisp and the stakes while comaratively smaller than the first film felt bigger because of just how personal they were. Hands down the best Star Wars film and a strong contender for best film of all time.

2. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

PG | 121 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

90 Metascore

Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness

Votes: 1,450,801 | Gross: $322.74M

I still remember watching the Death Star trench run for the first time and not being able to sit still because of how thrilling I thought it was. There is a reason why you could argue that this is the most iconic movie in history. From the visuals (that sparked a new category in the Oscars), to the plot, to the pacing and all the way to the absolutely iconic characters. This is absolutely one of the best movies of all time.

3. Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)

PG | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

58 Metascore

After rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel Alliance attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side.

Director: Richard Marquand | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Votes: 1,122,282 | Gross: $309.13M

My absolute favorite as a kid. There are a few cracks in the surface with this one. The cutesy ewoks and the almost episodic feel of the plot. The beginning in Jabba's castle goes on for too long but without it we wouldn't have the rancor battle or Princess Leia in her gold bikini. When the movie is at its best, however, it easily matches anything seen in the previous two movies.

4. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)

PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

68 Metascore

Three years into the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi pursues a new threat, while Anakin Skywalker is lured by Chancellor Palpatine into a sinister plot to rule the galaxy.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Samuel L. Jackson

Votes: 846,151 | Gross: $380.26M

The final part of Lucas' prequel trilogy and it is the only of any Star Wars movie not of the original trilogy to even come close to being a good movie. Much of it is action but there are some important emotional beats that sink in and that conclusion is simply breathtaking.

5. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)

PG-13 | 138 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

80 Metascore

As a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson

Votes: 974,265 | Gross: $936.66M

Basically, this is episode IV given a fresh coat of paint. The acting is good, the pacing is fresh and the effects are amazing. But it is a skin deep experience and if you really want to watch a great Star Wars movie with the beats and plot points of this movie, simply watch A New Hope again.

6. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)

PG-13 | 152 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

84 Metascore

Rey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order.

Director: Rian Johnson | Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher

Votes: 672,476 | Gross: $620.18M

I think I would have put this movie above TFA if not for the fact that this movie really only works properly once. So much of the plot and story is based around subversion of audience expectation, that once you see it again and have that immediate experience taken away there is much less to enjoy. It is an absolutely gorgeous movie, however, and Mark Hamill was simply stunning as Old-Man-Luke.

7. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.

Director: Gareth Edwards | Stars: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen

Votes: 687,091 | Gross: $532.18M

I almost considered putting this below Solo. This is a movie that functions purely on a conceptual level. The emotional beats are so weak because the characters are so two-dimensional, that by the time the emotional climax rolls around I was so uninvested for it to be virtually pointless. There were some cool action scenes and that final Darth Vader scene almost salvages this mess.

8. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

PG-13 | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

During an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover

Votes: 379,544 | Gross: $213.77M

Wow! What a bland movie. I think this movie was so bland that I actively forgot it while I was watching it. A movie that serves as more of a checklist than a coherent story. It adds almost nothing to the overarching narrative and succeeds in nothing more than bland entertainment for its two hour running time.

9. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019)

PG-13 | 141 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

53 Metascore

The surviving Resistance faces the First Order once again in the conclusion of the Skywalker saga.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver

Votes: 493,831 | Gross: $515.20M

This might rise (pun intended) or fall on this list. I am as of yet undecided as to what I think about this movie. There is nothing to truly hate about the movie but also nothing to truly love. It just plays so incredibly safe.

10. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

PG | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

51 Metascore

Two Jedi escape a hostile blockade to find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurface to claim their original glory.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd

Votes: 857,658 | Gross: $474.54M

This is probably the most despised of the Star Wars movies and for good reason, but while I think Episode II is worse that doesn't mean this is good, by any stretch of the imagination. The biggest crime that this movie commits is being fairly inconsequential to the overall narrative. You could simply start at Episode II and what you missed would be negligible. I will say that this movie also represents one high for the franchise. John Williams' score is almost good enough to warrant a recomendation to see the movie based on it alone.

11. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)

PG | 142 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

54 Metascore

Ten years after initially meeting, Anakin Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala, while Obi-Wan Kenobi discovers a secret clone army crafted for the Jedi.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Lee

Votes: 759,610 | Gross: $310.68M

Although initially seen as a minor improvement on Episode I, time and repeated viewings have convinced me that this movie is by far the worst of the Star Wars franchise. The dialogue is at its worst, the pacing is tedious, the action uninspired and the effects become more dated with every passing day. Only Ewan McGregor’s performance slightly redeems this absolute mess of a movie.
