Video games rated (PS3)
Games are ranked according to highest score but franchise entries are grouped together...so technically this list isn't a highest to lowest scoring list...but something like it.
I'll now include games that I've played before I got into the habit of reviewing them or games that I just never got around to finishing. These are the games that will appear after the long strong of PS3 titles that fill the top of my list.

3rd person shooter/stealth game with a sci-fi/horror premise
The best PlayStation 3 exclusive I've played. Terrific motion capture and voice acting. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a man must accompany a teenage girl to a rebel group, avoiding zombie like humans and...even more dangerous humans.
Paradoxically, even though I scored Bioshock Infinite less, I'm finding myself more affected it...so I'll say that that's the best game I've played on PS3 generation of games. - DirectorKen LevineStarsJohn AhlinGreg BaldwinJane BellerIn 1960, a lone survivor of a plane crash named Jack discovers an abandoned underwater utopia, only to find out that the mystery behind its creation is much more sinister than he first believed.85%

Retro-future first person shooter.
Even though I'm scoring this the lowest of the Bioshock games that I have played, I do suspect that if I'd played this first, I might have scored it the highest of all the games. Features a new setting and the graphics and graphic style are by far the best in the series.
I'd say that the narrative style of the story is a high point for the series (and perhaps for games in general)...it's woven in nicely to the gameplay. - DirectorCasey HudsonStarsJennifer HaleMark MeerKimberly BrooksEarth is under attack by a monstrous race of gigantic living ships known as the Reapers. 3rd person sci-fi shooter/role playing game.
The deepest, most immersive story I've played and with a great cast of characters you feel for.
Although the game play has never been the series' strongest suit and there are other flaws, including the great length of the story (I completed this game in about 133 hours, but that included 3 DLC stories) and needing (in hindsight) walkthroughs in how not to 'lose' the closure of sidequests or, indeed, how to bring about certain outcomes, the game nicely wraps up this story arc concerning commander Shepard.
I have no real complaints about the ending either. So, don't plan on downloading the alternative ending sequence DLC which PSN has on offer. - DirectorCasey HudsonStarsShohreh AghdashlooMaggie BairdAdam BaldwinAfter being revived from death and having to join a pro-human organization without a choice, Commander Shepard must assemble a team, battle a new threat, and make tough choices in order to save the galaxy from total annihilation once more.75%

Low score purely for the fact that the PS3 didn't have the rights to the first in this series...if that was as good as this, this could easily have been at least an 80% kind of game. Looking forward to playing the final chapter some time...and the first too! I'll need to get an XBox for that though! > UPDATE: I completed the entire series on PS3, in sequence, with a new character. 3rd person sci-fi shooter/role playing game
I've got a question mark next to my score because my notes don't actually have a score on it, so I'm guessing what I might have scored it. This is definitely a series worth playing in any case. It's a pity that the bug at the end of this game (as well as the issue with the 3rd game oftent not loading when you are on the internet) is so unacceptable...making it possible for some to never be able to complete this game and so take their character data into future games.
The first game has elements I like and don't like in it...some later games removed elements that I didn't mind and introduced elements that I didn't like. That's true for all the games in the series though. - StarsTim Dadabo80%

Trying to get the highest honour this game can bestow (the "Big Boss" rank) can be extremely demanding and a grind to perfect...unneccessarily difficult, I think, hence the lower score. Third-person, turn-based, tactical shooter RPG
A combination of story book style narrative and XCOM:EU style action. However, your squad can take damage during their turns, as can your enemies.
This game is set in an alternative Earth, during a parallel World War II style scenario...with elements of World War I style combat.
I liked the combat and didn't find myself reloading as often as I did for XCOM: EU but the difficult battles could get grindy.

Great visuals and character acting but the difficulty spikes towards the end of the game and there is a rather ridiculous 'boss' battle early on in the game, on a train (ridiculously hard, I mean). The definitive version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, with new missions and slight modifications to the original game.
The "teleportation glitch" from XCOM: EU seems to have been fixed but something worse is in its place...random mix of aliens...which is a problem early on in the game, especially, when your squad hasn't been upgraded much and you are facing multiple aliens of the hard to kill variety...they can wipe out your entire squad...unless you restart the mission and hope to have a more sane mix of aliens the next time. - StarsJon BaileyJohn Eric BentleyBrian BloomThreatened by an unknown enemy, Earth's governments unite to form an elite paramilitary organization, known as XCOM. Addictive turn based combat plus resource management game. It just seems really difficult...there are a lot of ways to lose this game...as in you just wont see the end due to failing on the resource management side of things, for example. Despite the very steep learning curve and some bugs and glitches, this game does have a lot of replay value to it. And you will probably spend a lot of time looking up strategies online to complete the game...which is a bad sign for me.

First person sci-fi shooter/stealth.
A pure shooter with replay value. In fact, this is the game that I first got a Platinum trophy for. Once you come to grips with the gameplay, it becomes easier, in a sense, and the highest difficulty level was do-able for me, much to my surprise! The game was a bit glitchy on the highest difficulty level, I think, which made the game really frustrating, but I managed to make it through...somehow. On first playthrough, on Normal, I would have given this game about 65%. It's replay value bumps up my score. - DirectorCevat YerliSteven BenderStarsJanis AhernJoey AnsahPaul BirchardSet 3 years after the original game. First person sci-fi shooter/stealth.
Disappointing follow up to a tight, replayable game. This game feels interminable and has loads of cutscenes. Perhaps its worst crime is to be so glitchy...the aliens and human enemies are unbelievably stupid or glitchy in their behaviour. Laughing at their stupidity sort of breaks any tension the game is aiming for. Most annoyingly for me was the huge increase in trophies - many of them stupid - and the introduction of 'treasure' like objects...which makes the game a real grind, should you play for these...but, be warned...you'll need to download maps for locations of these objects...which I couldn't be bothered doing.
Probably the most damning thing I could say about this game was that I didn't once upgrade my nano-suit. I spent a little time replaying the game and upgraded everything...but it still didn't grab me that much. Cf. a game like Bioshock, where the upgrades are pretty much the fun of the game!
There's also a whole sway of trophies you can get for online play...which I don't play...which makes getting the Platinum even more undesirable to obtain than it was before.

Third person, RPG sci-fi shooter.
Elements of this game remind me of the bosses in the Metal Gear Solid universe and other games brought to mind include Mass Effect and Uncharted. Not having played Gears Of War, I can't say if that is the game that it is most similar to.
Played on the standard difficulty level, this game is superior to the Uncharted series in terms of that style of game, including narrative elements...it's just better at integrating these two aspects than any of the first three Uncharted games.
Played on the hardest difficulty level, I had to abandon my game when I got to that section where you have to shoot monkeys off your comrade to save him. On Normal difficulty, this game is very grindy at times, but on Hard, it's nigh on unplayable...but I'm not a 'leet playah. - DirectorMario GalardoStarsMichael IronsideClaudia BessoDon JordanProving you can't keep a good agent down, Sam Fisher returns for this third undercover outing, which takes him deep inside North Korea on an information warfare mission.72.5%

A fantasy card game. When it's good it's good, but more often than not it's bad.
Too often the game is a grind as there is too much luck involved in what cards you get as opposed to (ideally) strategy. In other words, against the computer you will often lose due to you getting cards which don't help you as opposed to the A.I. which seems to deal itself cards from the bottom of the deck to cruel your chances.
Getting a complete deck for a character would make the game more playable as you chase those elusive cards but it's not clear in game how to do that, after you've completed most game elements...apart from paying more money for the 'privilege' of getting a complete deck.
The game basically involves pitting your deck's beasts against a similar or different deck. You win battles by superior strategy (rarely) or just the luck of the draw...which seems to uncannily favour the computer's deck. - DirectorDavid CageStarsPascal LangdaleJacqui AinsleyJudi BeecherAs a child goes missing, his father tirelessly works to rescue him, while a journalist, an FBI agent, and a private detective try to identify his kidnapper known only as the "Origami Killer".45%
Cinematic thriller/murder mystery.
This could have been an 80% kind of game, at least, if not for the immensely frustrating controller system, which seemed to require players having 3 arms with 6 fingers on each hand. The controls were a nightmare, I think. It's possible that the Move edition may have improved the handling, but I've never used the Move. It's a pity that the gameplay was ruined by the unintuitive control system. - Two players play a video version of table tennis. The first to score 11 points wins.Arcade game.
I have very vague memories of playing this game in pubs as a small child. No doubt I was quite crap at it. - Two tank commanders battle each other and avoid mines in a maze.Atari console.
I had a friend who had an Atari console (I think) with this game on it. I do remember finding the controls awful...sluggish, imprecise. Not much fun. Haven't checked to see what date a console version of this game came out...no way I played this in 1974! - Commonly considered as one of the most influential video games of all time, the goal is to defeat wave after wave of descending aliens with a horizontally moving laser cannon to earn as many points as possible.Arcade game.
My claim to fame on this game is "clocking" it. I.e. scoring higher than what the display will recognise. The game stopped counting beyond 9,999, I think, so it just went in to a new lot of scoring from zero again, I think. Perhaps I could 'accomplish' this feat by getting a lot of practice at a club where I was clued in to a 'cheat' by boys who switched the machine on and off, thus racking up multiple game credits without actually paying for it! That's piracy fellows! - DirectorEd LoggYour spaceship is trapped in an asteroid belt. Watch out for enemy spacecraft and maneuver your way out.Arcade game.
I was crap at this. - Face waves of aliens descending on your spaceship and clear the screen to achieve victory.Arcade game.
Saw this game mentioned a second ago when looking for another title. Think I used to play this game a lot and wasn't bad at it...sort of remember finding Galaga a harder version of this game kind of thing. - Defend the human population from swarms of attacking aliens.Arcade game.
My initial entry for this title was incorrect...I was thinking of "Missile command"...but since I Wiki'd this title, it rang a bell and I'm pretty sure that I've played it too. - Missiles from the sky are attacking the cities, you, as the player, must defend the 6 cities as long as you can.Arcade game.
Hopefully this is the game where there is a novel control device...a sphere which you rotate with your hand (it is...Wikipedia lists the name of that device as "trackball"). If that's correct, then this game is one I took a while to garner the courage to play it, as it looked totally befuddling...a series of squiggly lines going up to meet incoming missiles. Think I eventually worked out how the damned thing worked! Not sure that I ever got really good at it though. - The sequel to Galaxian (1979), the player controls a spaceship and faces waves of enemy aliens that try to destroy, capture, or collide with the spaceship.Arcade game.
With a bit of practice I got reasonably good at this...maybe. Never really wasted much money on this game. The ultimate "WTF?!!!" game...the relation between the buttons I pressed and the on-screen action was obscure to me...just seemed totally bizarre. Pretty sure that on the very few occasions I played this game (x3?) I always died in the first few seconds! I'd be thinking "WTF just happened?!!!". That's why this game was never a money pit for me...couldn't see how I could get good value for money out of it. If ever a game required walkthroughs and You Tube tutorials, this was it! But...they didn't exist online back then! - In a building filled with elevators, you play a spy who must collect secret documents and then escape through the basement. Didn't mind this game...don't think I ever got particularly good at it or played it heaps though. - Arcade game.
Guessing that this is the game that I have in mind. Notable - from memory - for how the perspective rotates as the player that you control changes direction. E.g. if you move the player right, the field of play rotates as a result. Odd. Didn't mind this game but not rabid for it. - You play an athlete competing in a series of track and field athletic competitions.Arcade game (1983)
Maybe IMDB has the wrong listing for this game...as in it may be confusing this series with "Hyper Sports"...in any case, that confused me too, so I cut and copied my entry for "Hyper sports" to this title.
Anyway, used to play this game a lot...when I was at the cinema with this in its arcade, in any case. Was bad at this...until I saw a boy "cheat"...I had always used my finger to tap the button which made you run faster etc. This boy was using their sleeve to rub against the same button, which dramatically improved their times/scores. So, once I learned that technique, I improved a lot. However, some Olympic sports in this game were not purely about speed, so that technique did not work on them...e.g. sports like the high jump or long jump (?) required you have have a decent speed AND get the angle right for your (high) jump. That was trickier...but do-able.
No doubt there are console games like this out nowadays...but not sure how fun they would be without "cheat" I spoke of. - 1942 is a vertically scrolling shooter made by Capcom. 1942 is set in the Pacific theater of World War II.Arcade game.
Used to play this one a bit...got pretty good at it. Trying to remember high scores...maybe 600,000? Guessing. - Hyper Sports, known in Japan as Hyper Olympic '84 is an arcade game published by Konami.Arcade game.
IMDB maybe confuses this title with "Track and field", so I removed my comments for that other title from here to where it properly belongs. But looking up this title on Wikipedia reminded me that I did play this game too...but I just preferred the sports and gameplay of "Track and field" to this game. It probably required more skill to do well...now I recall the skeet shooting...would say that they probably required multi-tasking in order to succeed...as in, you had to quickly shoot down two targets which were in the air at the same time. - Arcade game.
I do remember playing this game a lot. It had a novel control system...you used two joysticks...that was all you had! Might even remember a move to this day! I.e. I think if you moved the left joystick to the top and the right joystick to the right, your character did a jumping kick.
Not sure that I ever mastered this game...from memory, I never worked out how to succeed in one of the challenges (at least)...how to stop a charging bull...maybe I did...just don't remember! - Thomas must use his punches, kicks, and jumpkicks to save Sylvia from Mr. X and his henchmen.Arcade game.
The graphic on the Wikipedia entry rang a bell and I remember playing this game. Still trying to remember the game of another martial arts title which is what I was searching for here. Edit in: I'd say that the game I was after is "Karate champ". - Arcade game.
Hopefully this is the game that I have in mind. Used to play this game a lot. Not exactly a soccer sim...anything but. The game I played had a top down view and you chose to play as a team and you needed to win 7 games in a row to win the World Cup. Eventually I worked out the trick to progressing in this game...no doubt by observing good players. The first two or three games you played were ridiculously easy...you had the kick-off and you could score from pretty much the half way line just by moving a little to the side when you took your shot.
One thing that really annoyed me was this one time I played this game on sit down table top machine at a place where I didn't normally play. In the first game I scored 29 goals to 0. Just annoyed that I didn't score 30 goals to nothing! Didn't really score that high at my usual haunt (where you had to stand up to play)...from memory, heading towards 20 goals was do-able for me though.
In any case, the first two games had that ridiculous amount of scoring occurring. Here's where there was another lack of realism...every time that you scored, you resumed play with the kick-off! That's why scoring was so easy...you kick-off, you move a bit to the side from the half way line and score from there. Rinse and repeat. For the third game, you had to lower your scoring expectations...but not by much. Guessing maybe 15 goals to 0 was a great result in that, otherwise double figures was good.
From the 4th game onwards, you needed to change your scoring strategy as the initial one no longer works...the goalie will always save your shots. Actually, I think you needed to do that for the 3rd game too...i.e. you had to move your player in a lot closer to the goal, near the corner of the penalty box...a bit outside that, and shoot from that diagonal position, instead of front on as per previous games. Anyway, from the 4th game onwards, you took your player to near the corner flag and crossed the ball in to be headed or whatnot by your other players. This is the first time that you need to cross the ball to be scored with by another player of yours.
As with "NBA Hang time", the pleasure in this game came from trying to top your highest scores. For the tournament, I think my record might have been around - guessing - 90 goals...so, would have been trying to crack the 100 goal mark. You really needed to score the bulk of those goals in the first 3 games though as it became progressively harder to score in double figures. Again, guessing, my highest score in the final game might have been something like 8 goals. Think I wrote down some stats years ago on this front. - Arcade fun two on two basketball. Or is that, a basket-brawl? Throw some punches around and dunk your way to victory.Arcade game.
A crazy basketball game...the crowd in the game would throw food stuff on to the court, which made your players slip and fall. Your players could also violently assault the AI players! - Arcade game.
Maybe I played this original game but this site does list a sequel to it as well, but my memory is foggy on which I played. Don't think that I played this game too much as it used a trackball and wasn't very precise, at least the way that I played it! I much preferred the game where there was a swing lever which you used to vary the power of your swing...wish I knew what that game was called! - Arcade game (1994)
Fun shooting game...got good enough to complete the game and get my name on the leaderboards. Never got this good again for the sequel...well, at least I don't think so! - N64
"F-1 World grand prix" (1998?)
I'm assuming that this is the title that I owned...but IMDB doesn't have a listing for it with that title, so I've linked to an earlier one in the series.
Oddly, I remember getting motion sickness playing this game! Never needed a bucket, just felt queasy at times playing this game (like I do in some first person shooter games...at least initially).
If this is indeed the game that I played, I also remember things like:
Thinking that the Melbourne course was boring...never could get a full head of steam driving on that...always slowed down for some reason on some sections of the track which were part of the course proper.
Same goes for the Suzuka track...just too windy for me.
And again for the Monaco track...just too stop/start for me.
Can't really remember which track it was...guessing either the British or Canadian course, but I felt that the track was really dangerous...as in I would be flying around the course on one part of the track but there comes a bit - from memory, near the starting grid part of the track - where the right track diverges and the other part is into the pits or something...if I was racing this track for real, I got the impression that I could easily go flying into the non-racing part of the track...and get myself killed! Wonder if the actual drivers feel that way too! - Create your own basketball player, select from any of the 29 NBA teams and enter the championships. Additions to the game are spin moves, alley oops and double slam dunks and the "team fire" mode.Nintendo 64* (my first gaming console).
Hopefully this is the right title. Probably played this game the most on my N64, I'm guessing. That was mainly to get higher scores for my created players. The game that I played had crazy moves like players slam dunking from waaaay above the rim and the ball being on fire when they scored consecutive points. Fun but hardly a sim!
If this is the right game, I have to say how impressive the visuals were...there was a reasistic looking timber floorboard for the court...highly polished, which gave reflections of stuff like lights...it totally blew away the graphics of the PlayStation of the time. - DirectorMartin HollisStarsKevin BaylissKen LobbScott HochbergJames Bond must track down agent-turned-terrorist Alec Trevelyan to stop the launch of a powerful satellite. Ditched the game...would have either got a refund or an exchange on it. This was my first shooter, I think...and I gave up on it on that section where you climb a spiral staircase, I think, whilst having to shoot the enemies. Just found climbing the stairs and having to kill enemies really difficult...in real life I'm sure I would be a bad shot...but climbing stairs isn't that difficult...and at close rate I might be able to shoot a bad guy...so why is it so much harder in a video game to do this?
Anyway, it sucks that it's not possible nowadays to get a refund on a game which sucks. - A football video game that is essentially a Nintendo 64 version of International Superstar Soccer Pro.N64
I'm guessing that this is the version of the game which I owned...the graphic on Wikipedia rings a bell. Can't say that I remember too much about it...probably played it a lot...just don't remember it too much.
* I chose to buy the N64 because its graphics looked a whole better than the PlayStation's. Ditched this game quickly. The AI would run rings around me when I played against it in the regular campaign. There was a mode called something like "Wonders" or whatever, and I could beat the AI on that...but that seemed quite easy...so, not really well graded as far as difficulty went, I think. - DirectorGabe NewellRandy PitchfordStarsKathy LevinHarry S. This would have been my first first person shooter game. Loved the "quick save" ability - not sure if they introduced it here - which made progressing in the game easier and didn't require replaying whole slabs of the game if you died. Great innovation...assuming that it was novel at the time...at least for consoles. Think I only needed to look up advice online for the very final part of the game, so, that's a bonus. - DirectorHideo KojimaStarsDavid HayterPatric ZimmermanPeter LurieA crack government anti-terrorist squad takes over an obscure Alaskan nuclear disposal facility. I know, this is a PlayStation game! BUT, my PS2 could play PSOne games and that's what I did! I briefly owned this game...the one which had the special VR Missions. Unfortunately, due to me having trouble saving the game when I completed it, I returned the discs. Regret that, due to not having any issues with the VR Missions. It's probably because of the fun I had with those VR Missions - trying to get higher scores - that I judged something similar in one of the Assassin's Creed games so harshly...it just suffered in comparison, it seemed to me.
Great News! - This game and the VR Missions are now available on PS3 as part of an anthology! "Metal Gear Solid: The legacy collection". This looks like the Ultimate collection for this series. I did own a MGS game on PS2 which had the earliest games "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear 2" but I only dabbled a little bit playing the first game before quitting it. *** Maybe you should wait for a HD version of this game for PS4?
Anyway, I remember liking MGS. Did find it frustrating at times and the graphics weren't the best, compared to the N64. I probably ditched this game as I didn't complete it. Found it dry and unengaging. The hacking system was obscure to me and I wasn't really clear on who to attack etc...might even have fired on allies early on in the game. This is a game that in PC format at least often tops lists of the greatest games of all time. Might have repeated this feat on PCPowerPlay recently (this entry was posted October 2013)...think that might be an Australian magazine too.
Also downloaded this game in the last year or so on the PSN store for PS3...in case I ever want to revisit it 'one of these days'! Maybe this is better suited for PC? - StarsAndy GrayJohn MotsonIntroducing power bars for passes and dribbling reduction, FIFA Soccer 2002 adds to the usual football simulation experience with a bonus game with the nations that qualified for the 2002 World Cup.PS2
Had to check Wikipedia to confirm the year...I did that by looking for the featured song...one which I loved...Gorillaz' "19/2000 (Soulchild remix)".
In this era, "Pro evolution soccer" was the critics' favourite soccer game, but PES wasn't in the shops at the time, so I settled for this. I ditched it very quickly. Found that the easiest level was ridiculously easy to score goals in but the next level up was ridiculously hard to score goals in. So, it just seemed to me to have a really badly graduated difficulty curve...which PES didn't have, once I bought that.
Did get a more recent version of this game when I bought my PS3 (maybe FIFA 10 or FIFA 11)...yet never really took to it. It's gathering dust now. Still prefer PES 3 over it...the older title had automated graphics for things like bicycle kicks...but on the newer FIFA you had to do all that yourself...too much bother. - DirectorHideo KojimaStarsDavid HayterQuinton FlynnChristopher RandolphTwo years after the death of Solid Snake, a rookie FOX-HOUND agent, on his first mission, infiltrates an offshore decontamination facility to rescue the President.PS2
This was another critics' favourite in PS2 magazines at the time, so that's why I bought it. My first MGS game and I've been following the series ever since on the consoles. Since this was my first game in the series, I never worried about Solid Snake being a bit player here, which riled a lot of the fans of the earlier games. I also bought a walkthrough book for this game...a habit I've kept up ever since for this series...and also more recently for the final Mass Effect game...which I haven't played yet. - DirectorHideo KojimaStarsDavid HayterSuzetta MiñetJim PiddockIn 1964, a U.S. government operative codenamed "Snake" must infiltrate mountainous Soviet territory to rescue a scientist building a weapon of terrible power.PS2
This is the only game where I felt emotion (apart from rage, I mean!). That moment happened when I had to fight Boss at the end...so poignant! There was a reveal before that which just transformed your understanding of what had been happening...it's not often in a game like this where you lose your desire to fight a villain. Can't say I was a big fan of The End fight...a slog. Also found it hugely frustrating early on with the fight with that electricity charged villain. Eventually I worked out how to do that via the CQC martial art...guessing that that is the most sophisticated martial art mechanic in the series...ever. A pleasure...once you got the hang of it! Hated it before then though! - DirectorArnt JensenA boy wakes up in a forest and sets off to find his sister.PS3 - PSN (downloadable game)
I stopped playing this once I reached that giant spider for the first time. Have no idea how to progress. Not a fan of games where you have to go online to find out how to progress in the game. Might do that for this game...one of these days. - StarsTerry Butcher
Pro Evolution Soccer (2001)
PS2
Read about this game in PS2 magazines and so I wanted to get it badly, but it was taking its time, so I bought the competing FIFA game of the time...but quickly ditched that.
Do remember having a few teams with my own created players on them...one player called "IncredibleHulk" who was as tall as you could make them...and had green hair. Unfortunately, somehow I lost all those saved players or teams. After I bought my #1 game on this list (Pro Evolution Soccer 3), I gave this game another spin. The handling was worse than I remembered...it seemed like they were slipping around on soap.
