With or without 3D, Life of Pi is gorgeous. The colors and composition really serve to create a vibrant world in which the titular Pi, and his Bengal tiger companion, Richard Parker, are the only inhabitants. In 3D, you live in that world too. The film uses depth and convergence like no other 3D film. It's about more than creating three-dimensional space (which, let's be honest, is really all that's going on in Avatar). Ang Lee uses 3D as a tool just like all the others in his metaphorical toolkit. He brings an artist's eye to depth and convergence, creating images that, while reminiscent of optical illusions, oftentimes feel more real than if he'd simply put a camera on a boat in the sea.
