This was the prequel no one wanted. I've never been that big a fan of the 'Planet of the Apes' franchise. I saw no need to explain how the Statue of Liberty got the way it was in the original film. I was so ready to dismiss this film as another example of Hollywood cashing in on an existing franchise because it couldn't think up anything new. Turns out, they made a totally solid movie. The themes and ideas are weighty enough to call the film actual science fiction. As a bonus, the action sequences are great.
