- StarsJames J. CorbettFlorence TurnerTom KennedyIn the first scenes of this picture we have a chance to see Mr. James J. Corbett as an actor in his "glad rags" and society, where Mr. Corbett meets Miss Florence E. Turner. "The Vitagraph Girl," leads her into the mazy waltz, and while they are dancing she falls fainting into his arms. He leads her to a sofa, and, with the assistance of her chaperone, revives her, tells her she should take more exercise and invites her to his physical culture studio. She accepts his invitation. The next evening, with her chaperone, she calls to see him and arranges to take some lessons under his instruction. In the gymnasium he explains to her the uses of the one hundred pound punching bag. Professor Cooper now takes her in hand for a few exercises, showing how to reduce the waist and hips, the method of removing flesh on the upper part of the body, strengthening the back, hips and thighs and abdominal muscles. At home Miss Turner practices the methods taught her by Mr. Corbett and the Professor. This scene gives a fine idea of the advantages of physical training at home as an aid to health, strength, grace and beauty. One month later, the fair pupil is seen at the studio taking a lesson in boxing from Mr. Corbett, the great exponent of the art of self-defense. This is where the result of Mr. Corbett's lesson shows itself in the skill displayed by Miss Turner in their friendly little bout, in which she proves herself to be his master. In the following scenes Mr. Corbett and his sparring partner, Tom Kennedy, in ring costume, give illustrations showing the famous "knockout" blows: The Sullivan and Corbett battle and the last rally and knockdown. Fitzsimmons and Corbett. Fitz knocking out Corbett, showing the famous solar plexus blow. Jeffries and Fitzsimmons battle. Jeff knocking Fitz down in the second round of their first meeting. This blow actually won the fight. The finals of Jeff's last fight with Fitzsimmons. Fitz was "all in" and could go no further. Jeff helps him to his corner. The Mitchell and Corbett battle. Corbett knocking Mitchell out with a right hand and punch and two upper cuts. The Jeffries and Corbett battle. Jeff knocking Corbett out in the twenty-third round. Corbett is against the ropes, bounces off to clinch, Jeff swinging all the time knocks out Corbett as he comes off the ropes. How Jeffries and Johnson will fight. Mr. Corbett illustrating Johnson's style and his two beat blows; a right hand upper cut and the breakaway punch. Tom Kennedy illustrating Jeffries crouch and his left hook for body and head. In the scenes of punching the one hundred pound bag and a display of his original "shadow dancing" Mr. Corbett shows his great agility, proving his claim and reputation of being the fastest man on his feet the world has ever known. The picture is brought to a lively finish in a three-round exhibition bout between Mr. Corbett and Mr. Kennedy, giving a demonstration of every blow used in the boxing game, at the same time giving an exposition of "Clean Breakaways," "Hitting in Breakaways" and "Hitting in Clinches."

- DirectorFred M. WilcoxStarsShelley WintersKeenan WynnDewey MartinA little B-picture that M-G-M tossed out, barely promoted and forgot about but one that is better than some of the A-dross from Leo in the same era. Shelley Winters, after an absence of 15 months from the screen, is on the down-side of her sexpot days and the upside of her character days and is excellent as the devoted wife trying to keep her larcency-inclined husband on the up-and-up and has more losses than wins in that department; Kennan Wynn is even better as her fight-manager husband and gives a controlled performance as a blustery character, as opposed to the uncontrolled, mail-it-in, over-the-top blustery characters he later played in many westerns; and Earl Holliman as Wynn's harmonica-playing, punch-drunk handyman is dead on the mark. Story, which strays a bit toward the melodramatic in places, concerns a deacon's son,Daniel Norson(Dewey Martin), who thinks he has killed a man in a fight over a girl and goes on the lam. He is picked up by fight manager Willy Wurble (Keenan Wynn)and, since he owns a deadly punch, becomes a successful prize fighter. But his religious background leads him to refuse to take a dive in a fight Willy has fixed, even though he thinks Willy will turn him in on the murder charge. Creditability flies a little out of the window when Daniel discovers the man he is to fight is actually the man he thought he killed. Daniel's devoutness and faith has made Willy a semi-reformed sinner but that may be only because of lack of opportunity at the moment.

This impresses Pearl Gorman, girlfriend of fight promoter Tony Lorenzo. Pearl was a promising singer until her fiancé, a boxer, died in the ring and is now on the bottle. She drinks more heavily when Gil ignores her. Gil is about to quit boxing but after Father Ritchie informs him that a down payment has already been made on the iron lung, he continues. He explains his winnings from his fights to Father Ritchie as donations from a friend in the leather business. Pearl learns his true identity and, through his influence, quits drinking. Gil one-punches his way to enough wins to pay off the iron lung and build a swimming pool for the Boys Club---girls couldn't swim in 1956---and the only surprise in this overdose of sweetness is that Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald didn't show up for the swimming pool dedication.
