My Favorite Flicks
These are a listing of my favorite movies. I'm typically predictable in this area. Usually the happy ending, the underdog wins, kick-butt sports flicks top my list. However, there are times I will surprise you. Typically horror films do not make my list because I am a big chicken. (Horror film fans & industry professionals, don't take this personal.)

- DirectorGus Van SantStarsSean ConneryRob BrownF. Murray AbrahamForrester, the author of a famous book, decides to help Jamal, a 16-year-old student, discover his writing prowess by mentoring him and enrolling him into a prestigious private school.I saw this film in the theatre in Glendale, Arizona. It had such an impact on me, that this ignited a special "Ah-ha" moment. I have always loved movies but seeing this one, I realized that this is how I wanted to spend my life. I wanted to make films that give people that feeling that they can overcome adversity and follow their dreams.
- DirectorHelen GibsonStarsKaren KellyKenneth JezekAnn AultBased on a true story that rocked the world. An emotional journey that takes a former drug-crazed prostitute and convicted pickax killer from the depths of despair to personal triumph on Texas death row. This was the first film I was a part of. Interestingly, the cast & crew screening was in the same theatre where I saw Finding Forrester. I definitely learned a lot on this project.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJoseph CrossTimothy ReifsnyderDana DelanyA 10-year-old boy goes on a search for God after his grandfather dies. This is the most adorable movie ever. Who can beat Rosie O'Donnell as a nun? Oh, ya know what? Whoopi Goldberg comes in with the tie. Joseph Cross had an amazing performance!
- DirectorBobbie BirleffiBeverly KopfStarsChely WrightJennifer ArcherHoward BragmanAfter a lifetime of hiding, Chely Wright becomes the first commercial country music singer to come out as gay, shattering cultural stereotypes within Nashville, her conservative heartland family and, most importantly, within herself. With unprecedented access over a two-year period, including her private video diaries, the film layers Chely's rise to fame while hiding in the late 90's with the execution of her coming out plan, culminating in the exciting moment when she steps into the media glare to reveal she is gay. The film shows both the devastation of internalized homophobia and the transformational power of living an authentic life. The film also documents the conflicting responses from Nashville, the heartland and the LGBT community as Chely Wright prepares for an unknown future. When I saw this film, I couldn't stop crying. I could relate so well. This helped me to realize that I am not an oxy moron. I am just me. Thank you, Chely.
- DirectorNicole ConnStarsBarbara NivenBryan Mordechai JacksonJessica ClarkRebecca has a very unusual secret, one that not even her best friends know about. The last person on earth she expects to reveal it to is a high priced escort named Paris.I saw this at the Desperado Film Festival in January of 2013. I was so impressed with the quality of this film, the sensitivity and the humor. A Perfect Ending proved to be the perfect package.
- DirectorBoaz YakinStarsDenzel WashingtonWill PattonWood HarrisIn 1971 Virginia high school football was everything to the people of Alexandria. But when the school board was forced to integrate an all-black school with an all-white one, the very foundation of football's tradition was put to the test. You can never go wrong with Denzel. The story line behind this film shows how recent racial prejudice is in our country. Yet, incredible people who follow their passions and overcome obstacles continue to prove that misperceptions of diversity is simply unfounded and ignorant. (Note: Personal opinion)
- DirectorLinda Bloodworth-ThomasonStarsCindy BitneyDavid CroneJessica MitchellShane Bitney Crone's plans to marry Tom Bridegroom in California after the same-sex marriage law is passed takes a tragic turn when his partner of six years accidentally dies and Tom's family refuses Shane from attending the funeral. Can you say the words "I love you" any clearer?
- DirectorTravis FineStarsAlan CummingGarret DillahuntIsaac LeyvaIn the 1970s, a gay couple fights a biased legal system to keep custody of the abandoned mentally handicapped teenager that comes to live under their roof.I saw this at the Sedona Film Festival with a blended audience. I was surprised by how many allies were in the audience of this sold out crowd. The combination of the audience and the plot of this film left me a wreck. This film is highly recommended.
- DirectorLee HirschStarsAlex LibbyLona JohnsonKelby JohnsonA documentary on peer-to-peer bullying in schools across America. One can only say "Thank you" to Lee Hirsch. This is a prime example of how media can have such a tremendous impact on our society. It has the shocking awareness of a horrible injustice with incredible follow through in a call to action. Hirsch is no doubt a personal hero of mine.
- DirectorRichard LaGraveneseStarsHilary SwankImelda StauntonPatrick DempseyA young teacher inspires her class of at-risk students to learn tolerance, apply themselves and pursue education beyond high school.Hillary Swank provided such a great performance, I forgot I was watching a movie. This is one of those top favorites for me. The real-life example can't help but make one want to be a better person and change the world, even if it only seems like a small corner of it. This just proves how important it is to see people as people and invest in them, even when it seems like it's only a "penny stock." You can never go wrong investing in people. What a huge return!
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsQuinton AaronSandra BullockTim McGrawThe story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first-round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.Another random act of kindness film that I so love. This is an example of how we should be and how we should help one another, however we can. Beautiful, inspiring. Finally, a Christian who is not so religious that she misses out on an opportunity to put her faith in action. One of Sandra Bullock's best performances.
- DirectorMaria MaggentiStarsLaurel HollomanNicole Ari ParkerMaggie MooreAn adventurous love story between two young women of different social and economic backgrounds who find themselves going through all the typical struggles of a new romance. This was my introduction to LGBT Film. It was the perfect first film for me. Humor is such a barrier breaker and allows one to identify easier. This one will always have a special place in my heart.
- DirectorThomas CarterStarsSamuel L. JacksonRick GonzalezRobert Ri'chardControversy surrounds high school basketball coach Ken Carter after he benches his entire team for breaking their academic contract with him.See a theme yet? Another against all odds and taking time to invest in young people film. Oh, don't forget the sports theme, either. ;-)
- DirectorJoseph SargentStarsCliff McMullenYasiin BeyLuray CooperA dramatization of the relationship between heart surgery pioneers Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas. This is another hidden treasure. It shows the perseverance of people in the midst of prejudice and how they can change the world, in spite of the ignorance that surrounds them. A great overcoming the odds film with (spoiler alert) eventual acknowledgment of tremendous social impact.
- DirectorEricson CoreStarsMark WahlbergGreg KinnearElizabeth BanksBased on the story of Vince Papale, a 30-year-old bartender from South Philadelphia who overcame long odds to play for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles in 1976.Proof that you are never too old to go after your dream. You're only too old if you're dead.
- DirectorPaul FeigStarsBen TibberJim CaviezelJoan PlowrightA twelve-year-old boy escapes from a Bulgarian Communist concentration camp and sets out on a journey to reach Denmark. This movie was one of those treasures I found after spending way too much time at the video store. But, this film was worth the hunting.
- DirectorJoel ZwickStarsNia VardalosJohn CorbettMichael ConstantineA young Greek woman falls in love with a non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept him while she comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity.I saw this in the theatre 9 times. I brought different people each time just to see their reactions. This is a truly priceless comedy. It is humorous from beginning credits throughout the ending credits, without the standard 20-30 minutes of "dead air", lacking all humor.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsScott WeingerRobin WilliamsLinda LarkinA kind-hearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true.Iago is my all time favorite! Such attitude. Love this one!
