There weren't many high expectations for this one before its premiere. Neither Hunger or Shame received any Oscar attention despite being highly praised by the critics. Also with Django having just received a bunch of Oscar nominations last year, there are many pundits who felt like it might be too soon to expect the academy to reward another slavery movie. But then it premiered at Telluride and blew the roof off, and then it was shown at TIFF and people liked it even more. Now it has vaulted from a possible contender to be nominated into the front-runner to win. Ejifor has been getting a lot of praise and is almost a surefire nominee. Fassbender has been ignored numerous times for a wide variety a strong performances in the past, now he's also a lock for a nomination. The biggest surprise is newcomer N'yongo who some are even saying provides the best performance in the film.
UPDATE: While it was preceived by many as the frontrunner at its premiere, the hype is slowly starting to die down as more people are watching it. The response since TIFF has mostly just been muted appreciation. Another drawback to this film is that people are realizing that its not the heartwarming, uplifting film that they were expecting. The brutality of the film is proving to be too much for some viewers and that could lead voters to give their votes to more entertaining films that make them feel good. - DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsSandra BullockGeorge ClooneyEd HarrisDr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking.IN THE RUNNING

There were probably only two ways this film could have gone, either it was going to be a massive bomb or the next Avatar-like experience. Fortunately, it appears to be the latter. People are getting blown away by the visuals during early screenings of the film. If that can translate into a strong box-office then this becomes a very strong contender to win it all. The film is almost entirely a one woman show with Bullock and she is getting alot of praise for carrying the film alone. The one criticism that people have is that the visuals and the experience are covering up a somewhat weak story/plot. However, both Avatar and Life of Pi faced those criticisms as well and they were still heavily nominated. Also, in case you were wondering the visual effects race is over, there's no way Gravity loses that race.
UPDATE: While Gravity is sure to be heavily nominated, don't put too much hope in it getting a screenplay nomination. Films with sparse dialogue like The Artist or any Musicals very rarely get nominated for thier screenplay - DirectorDavid O. O'Russell has had a film nominated for a Oscar the last two years in a row and still hasn't won anything. There's only so long you can expect the academy to keep passing him up before they feel like they need to give him something for his efforts. That fact pushed this film into early front-runner status. The period costumes and setting is also bringing up memories of last year's winner 'Argo' which also helps its cause this year. Having a main cast filled with 5 recent Oscar nominees (2 of which also won recently for an O'Russell film) helps it out even more.
UPDATE: The film screened recently and its difficult to really get a sense of how its awards chances will play out now. Many who saw the film liked it but it hasn't really bowled anyone over. Its being categorized as a light caper film in the vein of something like Oceans 11. That might seem to hurt its prospects on the surface but Argo winning last year proves that a film like this can still win. For the performances, Cooper and Lawrence are getting the most praise and Lawrence especially seems assured of a nomination. Adams is surprisingly getting some negative response which is likely to drop her out of the race entirely.
UPDATE 2: After a tepid festival response, not much was expected from this but it is by far becoming the SAFE choice of the season. Not too controversial (like Wolf of Wall Street), too hard to watch (like 12 Years A Slave), or too scifi (Gravity). Its a pleasing film that gives its audience what they want and expect. Many of the recent winners have been films like this (Argo and King's Speech). Also interesting is the fact that all four of the main actors could be nominated due to the high buzz around the film again - DirectorAlexander PayneStarsBruce DernWill ForteJune SquibbAn aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.IN THE RUNNING

There's been alot of doubt about this one. Too small, good but not great reviews, not important or dramatic enough. But it has consistently stayed in the conversation since its premiere. Despite it coming off as too slight, people are still talking about it and putting it in the conversation. Dern seems like a lock for Best Actor and Squibb's memorable role looks like a lock as well. The Producers seemed to have learned their lesson from over-pushing and over-hyping the last Alexander Payne movie "The Descendants".

Every Scorsese movie comes with high expectations and this one was no different. The biggest surprise came when the trailer revealed that it was going to be more of a comedy than a drama like Scorsese usually does. While it may not be the 'Goodfellas in the boadroom' movie that everybody thought it was going to be, it still has a good chance of being a strong contender. Dicaprio as always is a good bet for a nomination and from the trailer it seems like McConaughey is going to have a memorable role as well. The academy doesnt usually like comedies but with Scorsese at the helm, anythings possible.
UPDATE: There's some rumblings that this may be taken out of the race and moved to 2014 instead due to the editing process taking longer than expected. Also, Shutter Island (another Scorsese/Dicaprio teamup film) made a similar move and raked in boatloads of cash. The studio could also be looking at a move for that reason as well.
UPDATE 2: After some suspicion that it may miss this year due to editing issues (or fear of the overwhelming competition this year), it appears to be set for a Christmas day release. Therefore, it is back in the game
UPDATE 3: From the few early screenings there have been so far, it appears that this has turned out better than many expected to be. Its getting great word of mouth and apparently the 3 hour running time isn't a problem since there have been a few people saying it feels like it needs to be even longer. However, a 3 hour cocaine infused hyper energy black comedy is definitely not the kind of film that usually gets oscars. It will interesting to see how well it does come awards time due to the type of film that it is.
UPDATE 4: WOW. Things have certainty took a huge turn since I last updated. This film has received a huge amount of controversy over its apparent sympathetic view of the main character. I expected the oscar voters to have a negative reaction to the sex/drugs but I never thought they'd be this angry about it. Despite all that, there is still enough support from the younger voters to get it in. However, I wouldnt be surprised if it doesn't make it - DirectorJean-Marc ValléeStarsMatthew McConaugheyJennifer GarnerJared LetoIn 1985 Dallas, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease.IN THE RUNNING

Before it premiered most people just looked at it as a vehicle for a Best Actor nod for McConaughey, however it has exceeded expectations and now looks to be a serious Best Picture contender as well. Leto is getting even more buzz for his performance than McConaughey and Garner is getting some praise as well.
UPDATE: Despite getting some strong reviews for the film and the performances, there has been an unexpected amount of criticism thrown at this film from the LGBT community. There have already been numerous articles about how hollywood decided to take an LGBT story and presents it from the point of view of a straight man. That negativity could easily prevent it from getting the amount of awards attention that it was expected to receive. - DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsTom HanksBarkhad AbdiBarkhad AbdirahmanThe true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.IN THE RUNNING

Its been awhile since a Greengrass film received this much oscar attention. He's only been nominated once but his name still carries alot of respect. The reviews its receiving are great and at the moment it seems to be a sure bet for a nomination. Hanks is getting the expected strong notices for his performance and he could be on his way to being nominated twice this year. Unexpectedly, the antagonist of the film played by Abdi is getting alot of positive feedback as well and if the buzz on the film continues to grow then he could be looking at a nomination as well. - DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.IN THE RUNNING

Comments
-----------------
Critics started raving about it after its premiere and judging by the way the critics awards are turning out, they haven't stopped loving it. The man hindrance keeping this film from having a stronger chance is the premise of the film and the perception that the older academy members (who make of the majority of voters) wont get it or relate to it. Jonze has gotten one nomination in the past but that was over a decade ago. Phoenix managed to get a nomination last year despite blowing off alot of the oscar campaigning process, but with a Best Actor race as tight as this one it will be hard for him to get in. And just a side note: I know alot of critics as pushing hard for Johanssen to get recognized for her voice performance but I HIGHLY doubt that its going to happen. - DirectorStephen FrearsStarsJudi DenchSteve CooganSophie Kennedy ClarkA world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent.IN THE RUNNING

The fate of this one is going to be incredibly hard to predict. It is the kind of film that the Oscars love and features a ton of previous oscar nominated actors but the reception has been mixed. Streep is always a lock for a nomination, and Roberts likely is a lock as well if they decide to put her in the supporting category. I'm sure that in the minds of the producers this was supposed to be the film to take it all, but judging from the reception it has received from its festival screenings, it just isn't great enough. The performances and the script are being praised but the uninspired direction of the film is what is apparently holding this film back. - DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpySeamus Davey-FitzpatrickWe meet Jesse and Celine nine years on in Greece. Comments ---------------- The Coens are almost always shoe-ins for oscar nominations. Even their films that arent universally praised like A Serious Man have managed to get nominations in the past. Oscar Issac is the actor being praised the most but its a subdued performance and with the fierce competition this year it will be hard for him to get in. The film overall seems to be subdued because while critics are calling it a great film, they aren't hugely enthusiastic about it. Expect this one to received multiple nominations but it likely wont win anything. Its best chance would have been Best Song but its disqualified from that category. - DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCarey MulliganJoel EdgertonA writer and wall street trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.IN THE RUNNING

Comments ---------------- This is the film that on paper seems to be the kind of movie that Oscar voters love. It is 1) a lighthearted drama, 2) family friendly, 3) tells a famous story about Hollywood, 4) is set in a time period that the older voters can recall fondly, and 5) features actors that they love (Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson). If it tackled a serious social issue and featured someone with a serious medical condition then it would literally have gone through the entire checklist of things that oscar voters love. Unless the film comes out to terrible reviews, look for it to receive multiple nominations. UPDATE - The reviews are good and it seems poised to be a hit at the box office but surprisingly it is missing out on a bunch of major awards like the SAG and Golden Globes. UPDATE - What seemed to be the least controversial film of the year is becoming increasingly controversial day by day. Numerous articles criticizing its depiction of Disney and inaccuracy have come out. Meryl Streep herself has even spoken out against supporting the film because of Disney's alleged misogyny. Dont be surprised if this gets shut out of alot of expected nominations. - DirectorBrian PercivalStarsSophie NélisseGeoffrey RushEmily WatsonWhile subjected to the horrors of World War II Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others.
