Twilight Sparkle: The first of the mane six to discover the story of Starswirl The Bearded. She uses her magic to reform Starswirl at the end.

Rarity: Comes across a mystical gem that once belonged to Starswirl, and investigates its mystical properties.

Pinkie Pie: She and Cheese Sandwich team up to bring light and happiness back to the corrupted ponies.

Applejack: She and the rest of her family keep the town of Ponyville safe from Blackmane’s minions. She also fights a few of them off.

Fluttershy: She gathers up her animal friends and shelters them from Starswirl’s curse.

Rainbow Dash: She and Gilda work together to do an aerial attack on Blackmane’s castle.

Princess Celestia: She is the one who stopped Blackmane from trying to corrupt Ponyville with darkness to begin with, thanks to her light based magic which weakened him, imprisoning him. She later does the same thing to banish him completely.

Princess Luna/Nightmare Moon: She protects the young foals from Blackmane’s magic and stops them from falling under his hypnotic powers. She also involuntarily becomes Nightmare Moon briefly as a result of Blackmane’s curse.

Shining Armour: He and Princess Cadance work together to alert everyone in Ponyville about the curse that Blackmane is spreading throughout town.

Princess Cadance: She and Shining Armour alert everyone in Ponyvile about Blackmane’s curse. And are later seen working together in the parade finale.

Mysterious Mare Do Well: A Crimefighter who partakes in several of the battle scenes and fends off Blackmane’s guards

Derpy Hooves: She is seen during the aerial attack scene in a homage to Snoopy’s dogfight from ‘It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’.

Doctor Whooves: Is seen during the parade finale and also helps sneak into Starlswirl's castle.

Spike the dragon: He helps Twilight Sparkle and manages to overcome his own fears in order to defeat Starswirl.

Cheese Sandwich: He and Pinkie Pie team up to bring the corrupted ponies back to their normal selves by bringing happiness and laughter back into their lives, thus helping to break Starswirl’s evil curse.

Discord: He plays a very vital role in figuring out the backstory of Starswirl the Bearded and even helps to finish him off in the end.

Gilda: She and Rainbow Dash work together to do an aerial attack on Blackmane’s castle after meeting up with each other.

Zecora: A zebra and medicine woman, she uses her medicinal magic to reverse the effects of Blackmane’s curse on some of the other ponies, also reverts Nightmare Moon back to being Princess Luna.

Princess Galactia: An alien pony princess who crash lands in Equestria on her search for knowledge of earth pony customs. She and her race are revealed a little bit in one of the earlier stories from Twilight’s book.

Countess Dellamore: An alluring but very kind-natured vampire pony countess who helps defeat Starswirl. She is also a former partner of Blackmane’s and helps defeat him.

Big Macintosh: He and Applejack shelter some of the ponies affected by Blackmane's curse.

Starswirl The Bearded: An evil sorcerer who plans to put a curse on Ponyville. Was once a revered and beloved master of magic and is Twilight Sparkle’s hero. In the end he is defeated thanks to the Mane Six, Staten and Princess Celestia. He later reforms and turns back to being a good-guy.

Flim: He and Flam become good-guys to help in the cause of blocking out Blackmane’s magic.

Flam: He and Flim reform and become good guys to help in the cause of blocking out Blackmane’s magic.

Queen Chrysalis: She is almost coaxed by Blackmane into joining his side but she declines and later decides to aid in the final battle against him and Starswirl. Her changelings help destroy the barriers of his castle.

King Sombra: Former ruler of the Chrystal Empire, Sombra is almost imprisoned by Starswirl but he escapes and teams up with the others in order to work out a plan to defeat him, partakes in the attack against Starswirl’s creations.

Mane-iac: A Power Ponies comic is brought to life via Starswirl’s magic and she comes out of the comic, however she decides to team up with Sombra and Chrysalis in the end to finish him off.

Lord Blackmane: British accented changling type who is sort of a male version of Queen Chrysalis, he has a wild tangled black mane with sickly green highlights, grey skin and semi changling styled fangs and horns. He likes to manipulate ponies into being his devoted followers and he has no qualms about using his dark hypnotic powers in order to do so. He is cunning and highly intellectual. But he absolutely hates anything to do with light and goodness mainly because Celestia defeated him and used a light-based blast from her horn to weaken him.

His weaknesses include certain light based elemental magic, his magic is only at his most powerful when everyone is showing negative emotions, and the fact that anyone who shares affection towards anyone but him or his followers will drive him to try and steal that somepony away from them by tricking them into following him into his lair and feeding on their love for that certain somepony until they're all dried up. His story tells of how he was corrupted due to the darkness taking over from within after Countess Dellamore left him. After Starswirl breaks him out of his imprisoned stage with his magic - the two of them spread a terrible dark magic curse throughout Ponyville. Celestia defeated him in the past by weakening his powers and imprisoning him, and she does the same to him near the end.

Staten: A Legendary warrior. He starts off as an enemy of Celestia's before he winds up turning good and helping the mane six and their friends defeat Starswirl and Blackmane with the help of the other former villains. He and Gilda share a moment during the aerial attack scene and at the end of the battle. He also plans out the battle alongside Sombra.
