- DirectorRichard KellyStarsJake GyllenhaalJena MaloneMary McDonnellAfter narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.Donnie Darko is a movie that feels like was carved from my soul. Richard Kelly managed to combine the surrealism of a David Lynch film and the emotional and character-driven coming of age stories often found in Spielberg classics and create this fantastic gem of a movie. As it was his first project, Donnie Darko has the indie sensibility of a small film with big ideas, basically my favorite kind of movie. However, this doesn't stop it from being technically impressive, the camerawork and editing is absolutely pitch perfect, each scene feels self contained but still stylistically consistent. The acting from all parties is also, phenomenal. Jake Gyllenhaal has a difficult task, playing an emotionally conflicted, troubled, mentally disturbed, intelligent kid who is both challenging and relatable as a main character, but he nails it. Every member of Donnie's family, especially Mary McDonnell, does a great job of playing a unique character who still feels like a part of a real family. Other performances by Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze, James Duval, Noah Wyle are all great, but the other stand out is Jena Malone as Gretchen Ross, a character who could have for all intents and purposes, had her own movie to star in. The music by Michael Andrews is unique, stringing together several different kinds of unique instruments to create an atmospheric and haunting soundtrack that I listen to regularly. The imagery, the pacing, and the simple feeling this love letter to the 80s creates in it's own convoluted universe filled with portals, time travel, philosophy and the strains of growing up in a small town, it all creates an experience that has yet to be replicated for me as an audience member. Stylistically, philosophically, subtextually, Donnie Darko is a movie that defies categorization, and for me, remains emotionally resonant and powerful, it's final moments always leaving me feeling different than previous viewings.
- DirectorBob FosseStarsRoy ScheiderJessica LangeAnn ReinkingDirector/choreographer Bob Fosse tells his own life story as he details the sordid career of Joe Gideon, a womanizing, drug-using dancer.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsKevin SpaceyGabriel ByrneChazz PalminteriThe sole survivor of a pier shoot-out tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup. There is simply nothing wrong with The Usual Suspects. If something bothered me about the movie, I would've figured it out in the dozens upon dozens of viewings I've had of it since I originally saw it. This movie is famous for it's twist, and initially, that was what hooked me. It was so well executed on a character and story level (and for that matter, a filmmaking level) that it lead me to watch it over and over again simply out of pure fascination. As time went on I built a relationship with the film, as when I was younger it was the first film I ever said was my 'favorite'. The performances are the glue that hold it all together, Gabriel Byrne perhaps being the most under-appreciated actor of the 90s, this being his best work. He's a magnetic presence that constantly makes you doubt his intentions and character, constantly keeping you on your feet for the thrilling ride of the mystery. The same can be said for Kevin Spacey, in his Oscar-winning turn in this film, who is quite simply brilliant in how he plays such a multi-faceted character. If Byrne was the most under-appreciated actor of this decade, then Spacey was certainly just the best. The rest of the cast makes sure you remember them, even actors who show up for a small amount of time (Benicio Del Toro, for instance) make sure to utilize their lines and scenes for maximum impact. Even in the way the story is told, in a fast-paced, vignette-filled, grimy 90s Noir procedural, serves to create layers of style weaved over a script so kinetic and perfectly laid out, you miss many subtleties and moments that make re-watching this movie so rewarding. As an aspiring filmmaker, The Usual Suspects is embedded into the core of who I am and what I want to do with film stylistically.
- DirectorStephen ChboskyStarsLogan LermanEmma WatsonEzra MillerCharlie, a 15-year-old introvert, enters high school and is nervous about his new life. When he befriends his seniors, he learns to cope with his friend's suicide and his tumultuous past.Everyone has a movie that connects with them on a purely emotional level, and for me, it's this one. I grew up a shy, eccentric, naive, timid, bookish wannabe writer who had a limited understanding of how and why people were the way they were. It's no shocker I connect with Charlie, not even purely as a character, but as a snapshot into the past of a human being that I find myself intimately reminded of whenever I watch this. Every character in this film is someone I knew in my adolescence, and while not always through the same lens, I still feel I know them all the same. Charlie's friends feel like my friends. His problems feel like my problems. His story doesn't as much feel like my story, but as a romanticized viewing on what I wanted my story to be. All that added to Stephen Chbosky's fantastic direction, adapting his own story and updating it for the screen flawlessly, he brings to mind classics in the vain of John Hughes and John Landis but puts his own unique spin with a touch more realism. The performances are simply perfect, Logan Lerman is destined to be a great actor as he's able to portray an incredibly emotionally complicated person in a very believable manner, and Emma Watson and Ezra Miller barely even feel like they're acting, and just simply embody being the type of friends you've always wanted to have. This movie always manages to bring me to tears at multiple points for multiple reasons, and instills in me the kind of melancholic joy that only something truly beautiful really can.
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsMichael KeatonZach GalifianakisEdward NortonA washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production.Birdman remains to be the most impressive film I've ever seen, purely because of how confident it is in it's execution. It is a movie that manages to capture the entire ego of the artist and trap inside an experience that I can only describe as 'transcendent'. The 'all in one shot' style of filmmaking at play here is one of the most well-executed and beautifully handled cinematic gimmicks that I've witnessed, and manages to elevate itself above more than being just very impressive. The film is filled with opinionated characters and interactions between all of them at different moments feel like you get a window into the minds of actual human beings. The acting rarely even feels like acting, the movie feels more like the most beautifully shot and edited documentary of all time. The core thesis of the movie deflects all notions of it being dismissed as pretentious, as it dismisses pretentiousness as being a side effect of an artist being confused or simply high on their own created persona. It's the story of a man who doesn't know what he's doing. As a person, as an actor, as an ex-husband, as a father, and Keaton manages to capture this in a way that only someone who has dealt with these issues can. Every character has their own hangups and problems, and they way they're all layered onto each other in a thematically consistent way is nothing short of genius. Birdman is the film that filmmaking as an art form, was created for.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittLukas HaasEmilie de RavinA teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend.Brick is the kind of movie that takes you by surprise because it is so much better than it has any right to be. If you asked me what film exceeds all other in terms of 'direction' I would have to answer this one, as Rian Johnson visually communicates every moment and every line in the most interesting and cohesive way possible. Brick is a love letter to old Noir classics like the Maltese Falcon, but with an interesting twist in terms of setting, that being a high school. Brick exists in a world where no parents or adults seem to be present, and everyone talks like they're a speakeasy or a mobster, or at least, Hollywood's idea of a speakeasy or a mobster. This is what makes the script here shine, it is a purely cinematic experience, but because of it's indie sensibility, makes the approach feel so much more down to earth. But thanks to the skill of the filmmaking and acting, it never feels like an amateur affair. And all that is simply just the style of the film, purely just as a story on it's own merit it succeeds at being an enthralling and darkly comedic experience that never stops being entertaining. Johnson loads his frames with metaphors and hints and tricks to the point where you feel like a detective, trying to follow and piece together it all along with Brenden, played expertly by Joseph Gordon Levitt, who is both the sophisticated and suave noir protagonist you want, but also a deeply flawed and emotionally conflicted kid who you can find a bit of yourself in. The lines are read and performed in a rapid fire manner that brings to mind the films of Quentin Tarantino, but with a large helping of humanity. The story follows the beats you would expect, but at no point is it tedious, in fact it's brilliant in how the narrative and characters weave in and out of one another while still being clearly representative of it's chosen style. The movie also contains and ending that manages to deliver an emotional gut-punch that recontextualizes the entire experience in a way I can only describe as being devastating as well as beautiful. If I can channel any movie into my own work as a writer and a filmmaker, I hope it's this one.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsAnsel ElgortJon BernthalJon HammAfter being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.Typically I have to see a movie many times and think on it for a very, very long time for it to end up being this high on my list of favorites. But sometimes a movie comes along that is so confident, so specifically engineered to appeal to someone like me, that it doesn't take much thought at all for me to put it here. Baby Driver is that movie. This feels like the movie Edgar Wright was born to create, something that evokes old genre classics of an era most people except for him have forgotten. It is a film created by a man who loves film, for other people who love film. It is a kinetic, almost sublime experience that makes you feel a sense of elation and fun that most movies wish they could emulate. 'Fun' is the name of the game here, and while Mr. Wright operates by the 'rule of cool' as if it were a religious text, he never sacrifices logic or a sense of rhythmic cohesion to make this movie work. Every actor walks into this film and performs their characters so expertly it's as if they studied these people their whole lives, and the fact that we get to see them feels like a treat. Ansel Elgort plays Baby the way many protagonists of Neo-Noir films are played, quiet, socially awkward, perhaps even slightly psychologically damaged, but is overall a quiet but still commanding cinematic presence. Every character in Baby's world of dysfunctional father figures projects their own hangups onto him, and reveal things about themselves in ways that feel disturbing natural. Everything about this world of purely cinematic crime and romance feels lived in, existing in a universe that several movies could take place in. It's elevated genre-fare that manages to outclass it's predecessors purely because of wit and stylish execution. And that's leaving out the absolutely godlike editing and camerawork. No car chase is done digitally, Edgar Wright treats the action in this like a symphony, attaching even mundane actions to a soundtrack that feels both unique and ubiquitous, every frame of the movie feels like the best possible version of itself, communicating it's ideas visually and audibly through both sound and dialogue. This movie is a treat to witness, and in a perfect world, every summer movie would be as wonderfully delightful and expertly crafted as this.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsBill SkarsgårdJaeden MartellFinn WolfhardIn the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.2017 strikes again. I won't mince words here: this movie was genetically engineered for me to love it. It almost isn't fair. Stephen King is my favorite writer, a cliche in and of itself, but IT is one of those books that simply never got it's due. In fact, along with The Stand and The Dark Tower, I'd consider it his best work. And for years, I've loathed the original mini-series with a passion. I don't begrudge people for liking it, I simply view it as an insult to the quality of the original novel, and thought that was the only adaptation it would get. But out of the blue, Andy Muscietti (whose first film, Mama, I did enjoy) comes along and decides to make his second film one that he will have to constantly live up to for the rest of his career. Not only is this a worthy adaptation, this is something that takes the source material and runs with it in ways I thought I'd never get to see. The horror in this is a solid mix of black humor, disturbing gore, haunted house spooks, and solid tension. And occasionally, a hint at something cosmic and unseen. Seeing some of the creative ways King used one of his best monsters put on screen is delightful and terrifying, and seeing how Muscietti got to play around with some of his own ideas is great too. The film blends the emotional, coming of age undercurrent and triumphant closing of something like Stand By Me but with a blend of multitudes of horror. The kids in this all do a fantastic job, as they all capture their characters well, but also deliver just straight up good performances. And Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise... Look there's no easy way to relay how one feels fear, but Bill rides the line between uncomfortably humorous and being a sheer, unbridled, fear inducing monstrosity. A story I loved brought to life through beautiful filmmaking that had me in tears... both from fear and happiness
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Val KilmerMichelle MonaghanAfter being mistaken for an actor, a New York thief is sent to Hollywood to train under a private eye for a potential movie role, but the duo are thrown together with a struggling actress into a murder mystery.Shane Black is a man who understands how to make an audience laugh, and how to make an audience sit in rapt attention when they aren't laughing. He perfected the buddy cop genre with Lethal Weapon, and has since then, only gone on to polish perfection. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a comedy that has the rare quality of being funny with every joke every time I rewatch it, which I think is essential for good comedy. His talent as a screenwriter shines through as Black breaks every single rule in the book about how scripts should work, but somehow finds a way for it to feel like that's the only way it could've been done. He plays with diegesis, the fourth wall, and simple filmmaking in ways that at first you don't even notice. That all being said, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a simple and funny noir mystery/buddy cop movie that features some of the most bafflingly complicated narrative gymnastics I've ever seen, and unless you're like me and have little to no existence outside the art of filmmaking, you probably don't even notice it, which is the real genius of the movie. And all of that is the technical, film student-level analysis of the film, what REALLY makes it work is obvious. It's funny. It's entertaining. And it's cast so well that every actor in this movie, in my opinion, delivers the best performance of their career in it. Robert Downey Jr was born to be the lovable and goofy, yet also sly and obnoxiously witty man that his persona has become, and he's at his best here. Harry Lockhart is a character who is so well-defined by his quirks and small actions, it's easy to miss little details because you'll be laughing at how well he's used. The same can be said for Kilmer and Monaghan, who both play their characters with such ease you wonder if a script was even involved. It works as a mystery, it works as comedy, it works as a drama, and it works better as all three. I would say it's a comedy that is far greater than the sum of it's parts, but the parts in question are so good, it's difficult to imagine anything being greater than the initial sum.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.David Fincher is my favorite filmmaker for a lot of reasons. Many reasons I could sit here and use as justification for why this movie is excellent. But I find it's easier to do that in reverse. To explain why David Fincher is my favorite filmmaker, in the simplest possible terms, is simply to say that 'Well, he made Fight Club,'
Fight Club is a movie filled with 'blink and you'll miss it' moments. And I don't just mean the subliminal messaging. This movie is so tightly made and well-crafted that a lot of people miss the point of it entirely, leading college students to use characters like Tyler Durden as some sort of de facto masculine deity, rather than treating it as the razor sharp critique of masculine culture that it is. Fight Club is the counter-culture story to end them all, a movie that came at the tail end of the 90s to capture some of the ennui felt by those about to experience the millennium. But all these things are more indicative of the novel it's based on, which definitely shows itself here, and David Fincher takes an already outstanding piece of work to the next level. The filmmaking here is clean, but grimy, hilarious but dark, poignant yet broad, and out of these contradictions, the movie finds it's identity. Every single shot is taken advantage of, the movie unfolds at such a brisk pace you barely even notice how dense the movie you're watching actually is. In this regard, you know it's in the hands of a good creator, as it could easily end up being a mess, as characters break the fourth wall, non-diegetic and diegetic scenes happen without even truly distinguishing themselves from one another, and the story itself feels like a creative fever dream. Another movie I love well known for it's twist, which is again, flawlessly executed and only makes the movie more interesting to rewatch. Fincher takes an approach here that had to be executed one of two ways, flawlessly, or not at all. Lest I forget the two main performances, Edward Norton as the narrator is one of the most quintessential characters in film, and is so well developed and defined, you almost forget he doesn't have a name, and Norton has to put himself through an insane amount of physical and emotional growth and strain. Brad Pitt in this is, well, what's the point of me even saying anything? Tyler Durden isn't just one of the most memorable film characters ever, he's THE memorable film character, a satire of the apex of masculine ideals is both equally tempting and horrifying when Pitt is behind the wheel. Cross that with Fincher's grounded approach to integrating CGI with real in camera sets, we have a movie where a scene showing us IKEA furniture is a marvel to watch. Fight Club is based on a book, yes, but in this form, it is the type of movie that can ONLY be a movie, a film that takes full advantage of every single aspect of the filmmaking art form, combined with Fincher's genius direction, makes for a movie I can watch, think about, and love, virtually anytime or anywhere. - DirectorMichael MannStarsAl PacinoRobert De NiroVal KilmerA group of high-end professional thieves start to feel the heat from the LAPD when they unknowingly leave a verbal clue at their latest heist.Of all the films I love that haven't won Oscars, I think I am the most shocked at how Heat managed to go unnoticed by the academy. It has acting giants Al Pacino and Robert De Niro at their most grounded, yet tightly performed roles of their careers, it has Michael Mann directing it, adding a unique visual style and the technical flair of digital filmmaking at it's absolute finest, and has a sprawling story about the nature of human beings, criminals, justice, the delineation between justice and injustice, and some of the best action ever put into a film of this kind. Heat is just one of those movies everyone knows is good, so it's difficult to really point out what works and why, you could just say, 'every aspect is good, so the whole thing is good' and while you'd be right, you don't exactly do the work here justice. Heat works because it's ambitious and knows exactly what to do with every single scene and character. It's hard to NOT be engaged while watching this incredibly long film, as once you're watching this, your ass is glued to the couch and you're finishing it. The pacing here is breakneck, but it never quite gives you whiplash. Combine it all with a cast of characters that all seem to say something about the nature of the different kinds of people that are portrayed in the movie with the seamless flow of events that lock you in to a rollercoaster of a film, it's a movie that, even though it's a commitment to sit through, every part of it is so good and creates new context when combined with any other element of the film, it makes you want to experience it all over and over again, and in the end, has a beautifully satisfying and even tragic conclusion that shows this film so abundant with style has a depth to it's characters that you may not have noticed. Every interaction between every character is unique, and manages to say something different about the people and the world they inhabit, it's a movie notorious for it's most interesting and compelling scene being not the amazing gunfights or the tense robbery and chase scenes, but a scene of two people talking in a restaurant. Oh yeah, and the score is so ludicrously good that every other movie of this type has tried to sound like it, but nothing sounds as good as Elliot Goldenthal's instrumentation is absolutely euphoric, carrying the film's already smooth and slick pacing.

- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order. The listing of all the Star Wars movies (the ones I count anyways...) is basically a tie, a spot to solidify the entire series being in my top 10. Star Wars is as special to me as it is anyone else who grew up on these movies. A cultural and artistic constant that is there for you whenever you need it, the purest distillation of adventure and escapism when reality feels too harsh. So why the ordering? Well, I can safely say 2017 has been the best year for films I've been alive to experience, and not only that, but everything has resonated with me emotionally and artistically that it transcends being 'good' or 'great'. The Last Jedi may be the newest entry, and in a trilogy that is not yet finished, but Rian Johnson has finally outdone himself. A Star Wars film with true vision, the likes of which we haven't seen since the original. A movie comprised of small touches that only someone who loves this property can make, and decided to put a lot of risks into play. And you know what? For me? They all worked. This movie is shockingly, STUNNINGLY beautiful, both visually and narratively. This film specifically gives you everything you want, and everything you didn't know you wanted. What puts this at the top, aside for my love of the vision and talent at play, is the message. For the first time, a Star Wars movie feels like it is about something other than itself. It contains what may be one of the most unique and emotionally powerful endings in all cinema, and it does so without a single line of dialogue.

- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsTom CruiseJason RobardsJulianne MooreAn epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of love, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley.Paul Thomas Anderson has made so many films that are unequivocally brilliant that I think it's insane he isn't more well-known than he is. Magnolia however is a movie that is both technically and emotionally, beautiful, and is a testament to how good filmmaking can compliment and even elevate good writing. Magnolia is a story with a gigantic narrative filled with different characters who at first have nothing to do with one another, but slowly over the course of one day, all of these people become interwoven in one large story that manages to show us who each and every one of these people are, and understand all of them. Magnolia is also another movie I love that plays around with it's fourth wall and diegesis (I guess I really like this trope, huh?) as the first ten minutes is a seemingly anecdotal framing device that shows us what the theme of the film is: unlikely circumstances leading to dramatically ironic conclusions. Magnolia is about many things and many people, but above all else it is about love. Our desire to be loved. Our craving for the best part of the human experience. Parental love. Romantic love. Unrequited love. Unexpected love. The absence of love. The finding of love. It is also about abandonment, as every character experiences some form of both love and abandonment in their arcs, which by some miracle, every character manages to have. It is 3 hours long, but it uses it's time well. It is a GORGEOUS film, shot beautifully and edited briskly, and the camerawork itself is as always, god tier filmmaking, as Anderson employs beautiful usage of the long take, using shots as a kind of thread that links everything together. It is an odd movie, as some find the ending to be just a bit too weird for what was, for the most part, a grounded story, but in all honesty I think the ending is brilliant, but I won't say how or why because I'll spoil it, but I think it's a brilliant use of metaphor and a great subversion of expectation. And what's a character driven sweeping drama without good performances? Everyone in this movie absolutely kills it, multiple actors having to capture emotional anguish that brings me to tears at multiple times, but the crowning jewel here is Tom Cruise. Tom is an actor I've never had a strong opinion on, he's fine, but here, he is nothing short of a revelation, as Frank 'TJ' Mackey is one of the most interesting cinematic characters I've ever seen, and his performance at the end of the film turns from spellbinding to quite simply one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen an actor take on. Magnolia is a story about normal people with impossible problems, but shows that even in the face of horrid tragedy, when your life feels most fragile, is when it can also change and become something entirely different. It is in equal parts, tragic and uplifting, and by the end, I'm so emotionally worn out I don't know whether to cry or cheer.
