- DirectorTate TaylorStarsEmily BluntHaley BennettRebecca FergusonA divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life.Jan 1
Critics were unnecessarily negative about this film. It reminded me of Gone Girl in a way, though not quite as strong as that one. It was a good mystery that kept me guessing and has a satisfying ending to go with it. My one complaint is that I didnt really like Blunt's performance in the drunk scenes. Those were overdone. 8/10 - DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisWith his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.Jan 1
Great mystery that, surprisingly, remains strong even on a 2nd viewing. Knowing all the twists didnt hurt it, but rather just allowed me to enjoy it on another level. 9/10 - DirectorGarth JenningsChristophe LourdeletStarsMatthew McConaugheyReese WitherspoonSeth MacFarlaneIn a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists find that their lives will never be the same.Jan 3
Enjoyable animated film with very little substance, much like the tv singing competitions its likely trying to mock. What made it enjoyable despite this is a cast of funny characters and some good music. 6/10 - DirectorAdam WingardStarsJames Allen McCuneCallie HernandezCorbin ReidAfter discovering a video showing what he believes to be his vanished sister Heather, James and a group of friends head to the forest believed to be inhabited by the Blair Witch.Jan 6
Several people told me that the shaky cam wasnt so bad in this sequel. I think it depends on how much it affects you. While its not as bad as some other movies it was still quite bad. Basically any shaky cam movie could be made better if it wasnt shaky. Aside from that major flaw with the movie, it also took almost an hour for anything interesting to happen. At least it was better than the first film thanks to an entertaining end to this one. 5/10 - DirectorJames SchamusStarsLogan LermanSarah GadonTijuana RicksIn 1951, Marcus, a working-class Jewish student from New Jersey, attends a small Ohio college, where he struggles with sexual repression and cultural disaffection, amid the ongoing Korean War.Jan 6
Almost painfully boring film up until the first scene in the dean's office. At that point it became much better. Almost makes me want to rewatch the first part to see if I'd enjoy it more now that I care about the character. That scene in the dean's office could almost stand alone as a short film it is so well acted and scripted. 6/10 - DirectorDavid HartmanStarsA. Michael BaldwinReggie BannisterDawn CodyThe final installment of the long-running Phantasm series.Jan 7
I remember liking the original Phantasm movies but I was alot younger at that point. Either those movies were alot better or they just seemed good at that point. The effects of this film were terrible. It looked like the balls and blades were made of plastic and them 'flying' around looked like they were hanging from strings. Only thing worse than the effects in this film was the acting. Pointless story if there even was one. 2/10 - DirectorWill GluckStarsQuvenzhané WallisCameron DiazJamie FoxxA foster kid who lives with her mean foster mom sees her life change when business tycoon and New York City mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.Jan 8
Not as good as the original though still very enjoyable. I wish they'd kept the characters a bit more realistic. Some of their actions were too over the top and cartoonish. Especially them always spitting food out and making ridiculous messes. The returning songs were decent copies updated to be more modern. 7/10 - DirectorG.J. EchternkampStarsManu BennettMalcolm McDowellMarci MillerFive long decades after Death Race 2000 (1975), in the overpopulated United Corporations of America, the annual Death Race is about to begin. This time, Frankenstein is up against no-nonsense challengers. How many points will he score?Jan 8
Bad start for my first 2017 movie. I was happy when I heard that this would be a remake of the original Death Race rather than a sequel to the Death Race reboots. The original was a fun cheesy film. This had some of the same tone of that original but was so poorly done it was impossible to enjoy it. I liked small parts of it, like a couple of the 'drive drive kill kill' song scenes and some of the Frankenstein's navigator scenes. Aside from that it was pure z movie garbage. Some of the worst effects I've seen in a movie in a long time. Can't imagine why Malcolm Mcdowell would be in such trash. Perhaps with a budget it could have been fun. 3/10 - DirectorEmily HaginsStarsAlex SaxonAlexis G. ZallSasha PieterseUnited by dire circumstances, four unlikely allies from a Philadelphia prep school - the hacker, the slacker, the athlete, and the perfect student - band together to attempt the impossible: steal from the U.S. Mint.Jan 10
Interesting heist film with many aspects, some good and some bad, making it unique compared with most other heist films. Some of the not so great parts were that it was high school kids planning and committing the heist. That made it hard to believe. Their motivation for the multimillion dollar heist being to save their school was the worst part of it. The heist itself and the method they used made the film worth watching. 7/10 - DirectorGreg MottolaStarsZach GalifianakisIsla FisherJon HammA suburban couple becomes embroiled in an international espionage plot when they discover that their seemingly perfect new neighbors are government spies.Jan 11
Surprisingly funny film. Galifianakis was the best part of it, but all 4 of the leads were great fun. On top of all the comedy there were even some decent action scenes. This won't be a comedy that ranks among the best of them, but it is far better than the average comedy that I expected it to be. 7/10 - DirectorPeter BergStarsMark WahlbergMichelle MonaghanJ.K. SimmonsThe story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath, which includes the city-wide manhunt to find the terrorists responsible.Jan 12
This is the 2nd Wahlberg and Berg film I've watched from 2016. Both this and Deepwater Horizon are based on true stories, but use plenty of creative license. The addition of Wahlbergs police character allows the audience to follow a familiar character through the whole story though its clear as you're watching that one person couldnt have been involved in every part of the events as it shows. The true story aspect does make it work on an emotional level though thankfully. 7/10 - DirectorTom McLoughlinStarsThom MathewsJennifer CookeDavid KagenTommy Jarvis exhumes Jason Voorhees to cremate his corpse, but inadvertently brings him back to life instead. The newly revived killer seeks revenge, and Tommy may be the only one who can stop him.Jan 13
Seemed appropriate to watch one of these films since today was Friday the 13th and there was a full moon. This is my favourite of the series, likely just because I watched it so much as a teen/preteen. 7/10 - DirectorAndrea ArnoldStarsSasha LaneShia LaBeoufRiley KeoughA teenage girl with nothing to lose joins a traveling magazine sales crew, and gets caught up in a whirlwind of hard partying, law bending and young love as she criss-crosses the Midwest with a band of misfits.Jan 14
Far too long for the very little story that was told ultimately. It somehow managed to hold my interest even though it was moving at a snails pace. Part of the reason is the scenes with them travelling in the van. Very repetitive but with good music and some character building. Good first time performance from the lead, but mostly disposable characters for the rest. 6/10 - DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.Jan 16
Seeing this the 2nd time, as a date movie this time, was a much more enjoyable experience. All of the songs were very strong. My initial criticism still stands that it doesnt fully commit as a musical. It feels like it forgot that it was a musical for the 2nd half and then crams in one more song when it remembered. I even liked the end bit that was like the last scenes of Singin in the Rain. I hate that part of Singin in the Rain because it makes not sense and serves no purpose. At least in this film there is a reason for it. 8/10 - DirectorTim BurtonStarsEva GreenAsa ButterfieldSamuel L. JacksonWhen Jacob (Asa Butterfield) discovers clues to a mystery that stretches across time, he finds Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. But the danger deepens after he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers.Jan 17
A film that finds a way to avoid being good for kids or adults. Most of the film felt too safe when it should have been darker. At the same time it was too scary to be for young kids. The characters were too goofy to enjoy them. It had potential to be a much better film if theyd gone darker. 4/10 - DirectorEdward ZwickStarsTom CruiseCobie SmuldersAldis HodgeJack Reacher must uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy in order to clear his name while on the run as a fugitive from the law.Jan 17
I didnt expect this to be good, but it was much worse than I could have guessed. Its like all of the action was done by somebody whose never been involved in the film industry before. They tried to imitate the Guy Ritchie effect in some scenes but failed miserably by just speeding up the film. It ended up looking ultra dated rather than ultra modern. Awkward fight choreography, painfully bad dialogue and wooden performances. Altogether a waste of some good talent. 3/10 - DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsLewis MacDougallSigourney WeaverFelicity JonesConor, a twelve-year-old boy, encounters an ancient tree monster who proceeds to help him cope with his mother's terminal illness and being bullied in school.Jan 19
A different take on a familiar sort of story. The way the monster was used made what could have been a very straightforward story something much more interesting. While it did tell a full story, I wish it would have gone deeper to give us even more. The animation used to tell the stories was a nice style that might not work for a full movie but I would have liked to see it used a couple more times in this film. 7/10 - DirectorStephen ChowLik-Chi LeeStarsStephen ChowKaren MokVincent KokThe most renowned and feared chef in the world loses his title of God of Cookery because of his pompous attitude. Humbled, he sets out to reclaim his title.Jan 19
This is the 5th Stephen Chow movie I've seen. Unfortunately its about as good as CJ7 and nowhere close to Shaolin Soccer or Kung Fu Hustle. I think this was trying to be a comedy though you could hardly tell. Pretty unfunny for the most part and not visually stunning like his other films. 4/10 - DirectorColm McCarthyStarsSennia NanuaFisayo AkinadeDominique TipperA scientist and a teacher living in a dystopian future embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie.Jan 20
Seemed like such a good premise, but it was didnt do much with it. I expected it to be high on the cool factor with plenty of memorable scenes and characters. Neither of those were true and it was not nearly enough horror to make it worth bothering with. Its watchable but not much more. 5/10 - DirectorBryan BertinoStarsZoe KazanElla BallentineAaron DouglasA mother and daughter must confront a terrifying monster when they break down on a deserted road.Jan 21
Generally its a good idea to not see much of the monster until late in the film. in this case there were too few characters and too shallow on plot to use that technique. The entire film was far too slow moving. Whenever there was some action it was as predictable as can be for a horror film. The flashbacks were unnecessary after the first one. We got the point that she was a bad mother early on and thats the only point they kept driving home. Zoe Kazan was good, though she works much better in a cutesy role than this. 5/10 - DirectorChester TamStarsJosh PeckTony RevoloriKevin CorriganA day in the life of two best friends, a drug dealer, and a store manager collide at a hip-hop concert in the Inland Empire.Jan 22
Netflix original films have been good enough that when I see a new one pop up I want to give it a try just based on that. This one is a fairly by the books teen comedy except for the dialogue style. I liked that they would move into little side conversations that are unrelated to what was going on. Those out of place conversations reminded me of Pulp Fiction in a way. Not a bad movie otherwise either, just nothing special. 7/10 - DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsJohn CusackSamuel L. JacksonMary McCormackA man who specialises in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror.Jan 22
The first half of this film makes for a great horror ride. It, unfortunately falls far from that as it goes on. The story improves again by the end at least. That bit in the middle slows it down to the point that it can't fully come back from it. Since it was based on a short story, something more needed to be added to make it feature length. I wish they'd added more to the scenes with Cusack and Jackson together. 7/10 - DirectorDanny BoyleStarsEwan McGregorEwen BremnerJonny Lee MillerRenton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out despite the allure of drugs and the influence of friends.Jan 23
Wanted to see this again considering the sequel is coming soon. Loved it just as much as ever. Stylish, smart and emotional(funny, dramatic, depressing etc) all the way through. I can't wait to see all these characters return for more. 9/10 - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyAnya Taylor-JoyHaley Lu RichardsonThree girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.Jan 26
M Night Shyamalan has made his first film worth watching in over a decade. Split is not on the same level as the Sixth Sense or Unbreakable, but it is much better than his last 5 films. McAvoy did a good job with the multiple personalities. Having the premise that he had more than 20 distinct personalities was unnecessary as they didnt seem to show more than 5 or so. The story could have worked the same, or better, saying he had 10 personalities. With the mention of 20+ it has you looking for each of them to pop up. Heres hoping this is a sign that Shyamalan is back and will continue to make films like this or better. 7/10 - DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerDon HallStarsAuli'i CravalhoDwayne JohnsonRachel HouseIn ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out Maui to set things right.Jan 26
One thing I wasnt a big fan of the first time around was the songs. This time around I really enjoyed them and that made me enjoy the whole film even more. Even the shiny song that annoyed me so much was good this time. Lots of fun and so much better than I thought it would be from the trailer. 8/10 - DirectorGregory HoblitStarsDennis QuaidJim CaviezelShawn DoyleAn accidental cross-time radio link connects father and son across 30 years. The son tries to save his father's life, but then must fix the consequences.Jan 26
After finishing season 1 of the series based on this film I decided I could watch the film without spoiling too much of whats to come in the series. Especially since its return is still up in the air. Turns out the characters in the series were changed alot more than I though anyhow. Great premise for a film and well executed for the most part. Some of the changing timelines didnt fully make sense but it was only minor issues. The big changes made sense, though werent always properly explained. If not for the overly dramatic style used a few times in the film it would have been an easy 8. The over use of cutting back and forth to items falling simultaneously in slow motion was almost comical. 7/10 - DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerDon HallStarsAuli'i CravalhoDwayne JohnsonRachel HouseIn ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out Maui to set things right.Jan 27
Sawyer enjoyed this enough that he asked to watch again only a day later. The songs keep growing on me and the character design of Maui annoys me more each time. The other characters make up for that though. Moana is especially well designed and the chicken still makes me laugh. 8/10 - DirectorMichael Dudok de WitStarsEmmanuel GarijoTom HudsonBaptiste GoyA man is shipwrecked on a deserted island and encounters a big red turtle, which changes his life.Jan 27
French animated film with no dialogue made by studio Ghibli. I think I would have been very bored by this if I'd seen it in theatres. At home it wasnt so bad since we could talk through it. Nothing too special about the film. The animation is blah, the characters are blah and the story is barely sufficient for a short film. This has no business being nominated ahead of Finding Dory. 6/10 - DirectorJohn MaddenStarsJessica ChastainMark StrongGugu Mbatha-RawIn the high-stakes world of political power-brokers, Elizabeth Sloane is the most sought after and formidable lobbyist in D.C. But when taking on the most powerful opponent of her career, she finds winning may come at too high a price.Jan 28
Surprisingly enjoyable for a political drama. Chastain's character/performance was unlikable while still having you root for her. The story was interesting throughout but really comes alive in the final act. Much better than expected. 8/10 - DirectorJared HessStarsZach GalifianakisOwen WilsonKristen WiigA guard at an armored car company in the Southern U.S. organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history. Based on the October 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery.Jan 28
Another comedy that Galifianakis was lots of fun in. The fact that it was, apparently very closely, based on a true story made it even more funny. Good cast, including 3 out of 4 of the 2016 ghostbusters. Too bad McCarthy didnt have at least a cameo to complete the 4. I'll have to check out what else Galifianakis has been in and the one other Jared Hess film I havent seen. 7/10 - DirectorRoger Ross WilliamsStarsOwen SuskindCornelia SuskindRon SuskindA coming-of-age story about a boy and his family who overcame great challenges by turning Disney animated movies into a language to express love, loss, kinship and brotherhood.Jan 29
Oscar nominated documentary feature that would have been much better as a documentary short. The subject matter is an interesting one, but even before the halfway point of the doc I found myself not caring anymore. Too repetitive and not very informative considering the length. 5/10 - DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAndrew GarfieldAdam DriverLiam NeesonIn the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.Jan 30
This makes 2 disappointing oscar nominated films in a row for me. Especially bad considering its a Scorcese movie. Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver were putting on accents which only served to distract from the film rather than add to it. Painfully slow moving. The story it told could have easily been told in 90 mins or less. The cinematography was about the only redeeming factor. 5/10 - DirectorStephen GaghanStarsMatthew McConaugheyEdgar RamírezBryce Dallas HowardKenny Wells, a prospector desperate for a lucky break, teams up with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on a journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia.Jan 31
This film reminded me of Wolf of Wall Street without all the style that made that film so great. Gold's premise is an interesting one that could have been done in a similar style to Wolf of Wall Street. Done the way it was had it feeling slow in parts and too standard in other parts. The lack of background music gave many scenes an empty feeling, taking away from the excitement or anticipation that should have been there. Thankfully the story and McConaughey's performance were enough to carry the film. 7/10 - DirectorTom FordStarsAmy AdamsJake GyllenhaalMichael ShannonA wealthy art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a symbolic revenge tale.Jan 31
I hope that Tom Ford makes more films like this. As you would expect from him, it is a very good looking film, but in addition to that it has a compelling story. The real life side of the story was almost unnecessary since the other part was so interesting. At least that additional level with Amy Adams sets this apart from a typical thriller. 8/10 - DirectorJim JarmuschStarsAdam DriverGolshifteh FarahaniNellieA quiet observation of the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.Feb 2
Even the 2nd time around I had the same feeling that this is not the sort of film I would usually like, but it works very well somehow. Very little actually happens in the film. I don't like poetry in general, and certainly not the poetry used in this film. Everything in the film has a very genuine feel to it that makes it enjoyable to watch. There is a bit of humour which also works well. I'll lower my rating slightly this time though still a strong movie. 8/10 - DirectorMartin ZandvlietStarsRoland MøllerLouis HofmannJoel BasmanIn post-World War II Denmark, a group of young German POWs are forced to clear a beach of thousands of land mines under the watch of a Danish Sergeant who slowly learns to appreciate their plight.Feb 2
Different sort of war related movie. Cleaning up minefields is a repetitive task and it did make for a somewhat repetitive film. Either way it works on some level but doesnt feel like a film deserving of an Oscar nomination. The performances are decent and the concept is different enough to hold interest. 7/10 - DirectorMichael BayStarsJohn KrasinskiPablo SchreiberJames Badge DaleDuring an attack on a U.S. compound in Libya, a security team struggles to make sense out of the chaos.Feb 3
A war film that goes on much longer than it needed to. The fact that its based on a true story explains the reason that the action goes on as long as it does. The problem is the 40 plus minutes it takes to get to that point. The attempt to balance out the pro war bits with small bits of commentary on the downsides of war doesnt even come close to making up for it. 5/10 - DirectorCaradog W. JamesStarsKatee SackhoffLucy BoyntonRichard MylanA mother desperate to reconnect with her troubled daughter becomes embroiled in the urban legend of a demonic witch.Feb 3
Fairly run of the mill horror, though enjoyable nonetheless. Something more unique would have been nice. I did like the look of the creature though and the mother daughter aspect. 7/10 - DirectorAdam RandallStarsBill MilnerMaisie WilliamsMiranda RichardsonAfter being shot, Tom awakens from a coma to discover that fragments of his smartphone have been embedded in his head--and worse, that returning to normal teenage life is impossible because he has developed a strange set of superpowers.Feb 5
Interesting premise that was unfortunately not explored nearly as much as it could have been. There is so much more they could have had him do with the powers he had. What was done was good though, so I can't fault it that way. 6/10 - DirectorHannes HolmStarsRolf LassgårdBahar ParsFilip BergOve, an ill-tempered, isolated retiree who spends his days enforcing block association rules and visiting his wife's grave, has finally given up on life just as an unlikely friendship develops with his boisterous new neighbors.Feb 5
Great mix of emotions covered throughout this film. The main character was funny throughout. The side characters were well rounded as well. It almost felt like a sitcom I'd been watching for years at times. Besides all the humour it was equally depressing thanks to the connection you make with the lead. It then adds a compelling backstory that wasnt even necessary, but makes the film that much better. So far this is my favourite of the foreign language films I've seen from 2016. Well deserving of the nomination. 9/10 - DirectorMartin ButlerBentley DeanStarsMungau DainMarie WawaMarceline RofitSet on a remote Pacific island, covered in rain forest and dominated by an active volcano, this heartfelt story, enacted by the Yakel tribe, tells of a sister's loyalty, a forbidden love affair and the pact between the old ways and the new.Feb 6
Unlike a Man Called Ove, this nominee for best foreign language film is in no way deserving. I have no clue what the voters saw in this. It is completely boring and seems to have nothing going for it. It seems to serve no purpose, aside from showing how this 'tribe' lives. If I wanted to see that then a documentary would be the way to go. As a feature film it feels like something only people in that world would enjoy. Complete waste of time and waste of a slot in this important category. 2/10 - DirectorPadraig ReynoldsStarsChristopher WiehlKym JacksonTina LiffordIn the aftermath of the hunt for a serial killer, an ancient curse consumes a city, causing a series of brutal murders and pitting a detective against the clock to save his daughter's life.Feb 7
Completely standard horror story. Sometimes thats all you really need though. The acting was subpar, but I enjoyed the simple story enough to hold my interest at least. 5/10 - DirectorAnna BillerStarsSamantha RobinsonJeffrey Vincent PariseLaura WaddellA modern-day witch uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her, with deadly consequences.Feb 8
I was excited to see this after finding it listed on the top 5 rated horror films of 2016. Its an homage to 70s film that, i suppose, is fairly well done. The problem was more that it wasnt played for humour. The choice of music was weak and could have made it much more fun had they chose the right soundtrack. 3/10 - DirectorJonás CuarónStarsGael García BernalJeffrey Dean MorganAlondra HidalgoA group of people trying to cross the border from Mexico into the United States encounter a racist man who has taken border patrol duties into his own hands.Feb 9
There are far too many movies made about Mexican's crossing the border. They all start the same. At least this one ends goes in a different direction. Some of the violence was bloody and graphic. The chase/action got repetitive long before it was over though. Decent performances from the 2 leads. Seeing Negan cry was odd. I'm surprised that this even qualified as Mexico's submission for the foreign language film oscar. Most of the film was in English. 6/10 - DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsMichael KeatonNick OffermanJohn Carroll LynchThe story of Ray Kroc, a salesman who turned two brothers' innovative fast food eatery, McDonald's, into the biggest restaurant business in the world, with a combination of ambition, persistence, and ruthlessness.Feb 10
Compelling story about how McDonalds restaurants became a national brand. The way the story was told only allowed for little bits of info on the growth of the restaurants after the first 30 mins or so. It iinstead focussed on Keaton's character. His lead performance is strong enough that it may have gotten him an oscar nom in a different year. I wanted to see even more about the McDonalds story so I might to check out one of the docs about it. 8/10 - DirectorDamien MacéAlexis WajsbrotStarsGregg SulkinGarrett ClaytonBella DayneAn evening of drunken prank calls becomes a nightmare for two teenagers when a stranger turns their own game against them, with deadly consequences.Feb 10
After a weak start(almost bad enough for me to shut it off), it came on full force and turned into a horror film that is hard to turn away from. The performances never improved, but the story and twists were so good that the bad acting didnt matter a bit. Having guessed the end early on didnt even affect the enjoyment. 7/10 - DirectorAsghar FarhadiStarsShahab HosseiniTaraneh AlidoostiMina SadatiWhile Ranaa and Emad, a married couple, are participating in a production of "Death of a Salesman," she is assaulted in their new home, which leaves him determined to find the perpetrator over his wife's traumatized objections.Feb 10
I feel like this nomination is just because of who the director is and what he has done before. His previous films have been compelling even with slow pacing and basic stories. This film bored me early on and I found it very hard to stick with it as it went on. The integration of the stage play within the narrative was tiring. 4/10 - DirectorMark WatersStarsBilly Bob ThorntonKathy BatesTony CoxFueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve.Feb 11
I was sure that this going to be terrible. Much like the first film I was pleasantly surprised. The humour was extremely raunchy and once again Thornton was perfect as the alcoholic santa. Loads of laugh out loud moments. Kathy Bates was a good addition, though I dont think her character was very strong overall. 7/10 - DirectorF. Javier GutiérrezStarsMatilda Anna Ingrid LutzAlex RoeJohnny GaleckiA young woman finds herself on the receiving end of a terrifying curse that threatens to take her life in 7 days.Feb 11
Not as bad as critics made it out to be but a clear step down from previous Ring movies. The general premise of the ring was still here and thats what made this film worth watching. Some of the added story only took away from the base story by distracting the viewer. My biggest complaint was the death scenes and how they were shot. They avoid really showing anything at all by using quick cuts and angles. There was no moment in this film that followed through on the creepiness that a ring movie should have. 6/10 - DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsChris PrattWill FerrellElizabeth BanksAn ordinary LEGO construction worker, thought to be the prophesied as "special", is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the LEGO universe into eternal stasis.Feb 12
We decided to put this on again in anticipation of the Lego Batman movie. I don't expect it to be as good as this one, though will likely have much of the same humour which is a good start. I'll be shocked if it has the surprising emotional ending. 9/10 - DirectorChris ButlerSam FellStarsKodi Smit-McPheeAnna KendrickChristopher Mintz-PlasseA misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.Feb 12
Great story with well written/developed characters. Its too bad that the character design is so ugly. An characters other than the main group are made to look so bad that its uncomfortable watching them. After seeing this one again I'd now say that Kubo is my favourite from this studio. 7/10 - DirectorChris McKayStarsWill ArnettMichael CeraRosario DawsonA cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick.Feb 14
Impressive and inspired animation much like the first Lego Movie. The humour wasnt as smart or consistent as that other film though. I liked the Batman and Robin characters more than I expected. I didnt really care for any of the other characters though. Good animated film, but not great. It was quite the experience in Dbox. More intense movement than any other film I've seen in dbox. It was loads of fun watching Sawyer enjoy the Dbox experience for the first time. 7/10 - DirectorJustin G. Very pleasant surprise with this film. I expected to be bored by it, especially considering the runtime. The interesting characters and the humour held my interest throughout. The way it was shot made the performances more natural. I look forward to seeing the planned Nicholson remake when it gets made. Not my favourite of the foreign film nominees, but if A Man Called Ove can't win then I'd like to see this one take it. 8/10 - DirectorPablo LarraínStarsNatalie PortmanPeter SarsgaardGreta GerwigFollowing the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband's historic legacy.Feb 18
I can't judge how accurate Portman's portrayal of Jackie was since I've never seen any footage of the real Jackie speaking. The accent she put on was hard to listen to because it sounded so fake. The unique style of the film is what sets it apart from a typical biopic. The combination of old and new footage draws you into the time. I really enjoyed the horror style score which should be so out of place in this genre. The horrific events covered fit the horror theme. The best use of that music was when she was wandering through the White House. This and her facial expressions told us everything about how she was feeling without needing to speak a single word. 7/10 - DirectorPaul VerhoevenStarsIsabelle HuppertLaurent LafitteAnne ConsignyA successful businesswoman gets caught up in a game of cat and mouse as she tracks down the unknown man who raped her.Feb 18
I enjoyed this a bit more watching it for the 2nd time. Even when you know where it is going it works well as a thriller. The standout is Huppert's performance, but it should have also been nominated for best foreign film. Much better than 3 of the 5 that were nominated. 8/10 - DirectorTheodore MelfiStarsTaraji P. HensonOctavia SpencerJanelle MonáeThe story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.Feb 18
Inspirational story that seems to have been compressed and exaggerated for the purposes of hollywood. Its too bad that they felt the need to go so far down that road. It takes away from an otherwise strong film. Strong performances from the leads as well. Not surprised that they'll miss out on the actual oscars though since these changes made it seem too over the top and silly at times. 7/10 - DirectorDenzel WashingtonStarsDenzel WashingtonViola DavisStephen McKinley HendersonA working-class African-American father tries to raise his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life.Feb 18
Different, but no better, than I expected. The characters just talked nonstop in a very unnatural and uninteresting way. I don't have a problem with a film being based on a play, but it doesnt need to feel like a play the whole way through. Everything about this film was like a long and boring play. Undeserving of most of the nominations this received. The only one that it deserves is for Viola Davis, though that was in the wrong category. Clearly a lead performance from her rather than supporting. Denzel's acting was over the top. He can clearly act well though, so maybe if they'd just fixed some of the dialogue to be more natural then it could have worked better. 5/10 - DirectorKenneth LonerganStarsCasey AffleckMichelle WilliamsKyle ChandlerA depressed uncle is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies.Feb 18
The chemistry between Affleck and Hedges is enough to make the movie great. Strong performances all around and plenty of humour to lighten up the depressing story. Hopefully the voters do the right thing and give the Oscar to Affleck. 8/10 - DirectorMatt RossStarsViggo MortensenGeorge MacKaySamantha IslerIn the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent.Feb 19
Story about a family being brought up in a non traditional fashion in the wilderness. All the scenes with the children, especially the younger children, were the most entertaining. I lost interest when it was about the adults rather than the kids. There was, however a big emotional impact with the mother and her unconventional 'end'. 7/10 - DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsBrad PittMarion CotillardJared HarrisIn 1942, a Canadian intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war.Feb 19
Entertaining thriller despite a very slow moving start. The action scenes made me wish it had been made as more of an action film. For some reason Pitt looked odd to the point that it seemed like his face was CGI. Maybe he has had work done. 7/10 - DirectorGianfranco RosiStarsSamuele PucilloMattias CucinaSamuele CaruanaCapturing life on the Italian island of Lampedusa, a frontline in the European migrant crisis.Feb 23
Surprisingly well shot doc with an uninteresting subject matter. From what I understood it was going to be about migrants arriving at this Italian island and their struggles either getting there or surviving there. It turns out that had very little screentime in this doc. Most of the film focused on a young boy who lives on the island. Showing him playing with a friend and just living his life. That part of it was very enjoyable for some reason. Had that been the whole film it would have been better. Either way the look of the film was gorgeous. 7/10 - DirectorBrian OakesStarsJames FoleyUnai AranzadiZac BaillieAn in-depth look at the life and work of American journalist James Foley, who was killed by ISIS terrorists in 2014.Feb 23
Slow start until they got to the point that he was taken by Isis. From that point on it was a good doc. After finishing the doc I saw that there are some that think the beheading was faked. That would have been an even more interesting subject to cover. The reaction of the parents and the way they looked when speaking to the press makes me wonder if there is any truth to the beheading being staged. It seems like they could have been aware that he was safe. 6/10 - DirectorMike MillsStarsAnnette BeningElle FanningGreta GerwigThe story of a teenage boy, his mother, and two other women who help raise him among the love and freedom of Southern California of 1979.Feb 24

All 5 of the nominated films were good, but only a couple seemed worthy of the nomination. I expect that Piper will win. That is the only one of the 5 that had any humour to it and its also the cutest of the bunch. The next best after Piper was Pearl. It would be nice to see either of those win. I wish that Pear Cider had been shorter as I was really enjoying it until it became repetitive and therefore tiring. I liked that it had such an adult tone to it. The animation in that one hardly mattered at all. The important part was the narration. 7/10 - DirectorTravis KnightStarsCharlize TheronArt ParkinsonMatthew McConaugheyA young boy named Kubo must locate a magical suit of armour worn by his late father in order to defeat a vengeful spirit from the past.Feb 26
Another animated film from 2016 that I enjoy more each time I watch it. This was a very strong year for animation. I've given 3 animated films a 9 for 2016. Watching the blu ray special features showing how they animated some of the scenes makes the film even more impressive. 9/10 - Collective screening of the Academy Award nominated short films from the Live Action category for 2017.Feb 26
Disappointing collection of live action shorts this year. Barely any humour across the 5 shorts. I much prefer the comedic shorts. Sing was probably my favourite as it was short, based on a true story and well acted (by kids no less). 6/10 - DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. Always fun to watch. Good humour and emotion like any good disney film should have. I wonder if they'd ever make a sequel to this. If so they'd have plenty of places they could go with it. Adding lots of other known video game properties would be nice. More nintendo characters to start with. 8/10 - DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsDane DeHaanJason IsaacsMia GothAn ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from an idyllic but mysterious "wellness center" at a remote location in the Swiss Alps, but soon suspects that the spa's treatments are not what they seem.Feb 28
I was worried, based on the preview, that this was going to be a repeat of Shutter Island. Thankfully it was far from it. Much more interesting story that got better and better as it went along. There was a point towards the end when it seemed to go a bit too over the top and change genres entirely. There was also a sudden event going on that wasnt mentioned earlier in the film (from what I remember) which just made it seem like it was there for convenience to make things look good. The sets and locations were perfect and sold the whole film for me. 7/10 - DirectorKenny OrtegaStarsIvy LevanVictoria JusticeStaz NairA straitlaced, square couple, seeking shelter from a storm, find themselves in the castle of a transgender alien mad scientist intent on creating a buff bodybuilder.Mar 1
I would never expect a remake of Rocky Horror to be as good as the original. Some aspects did remain great. The songs and dialogue were virtually unchanged which is a good thing. The casting was the worst part of it. Laverne Cox as Frankenfurter doesnt work well as she looks (and identifies as) a woman. This makes much of the movie not make sense. Brad resisting when Franknfurter gets in his bed doesnt have the same effect for example. There is no shock value to the character whereas in the original it was dripping with shock value. The choice to cast 2 different races for Riffraff and Magenta was even worse. They are supposed to be siblings and them clearly not being from the same parents takes away all the awkward tension when the sexual moments happen. On the other hand, the casting choices for Janet, Riff Raff and Columbia were perfect. The singing was good from all though which goes a long way. Even Laverne Cox's performance was really good even though the casting was so wrong. It was fun spotting the Toronto sites used for filming locations like Casa Loma and the Elgin Theatre. 7/10 - DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.Mar 3
Great thriller with a nice measure of both humour and horror to spice it up. Its easy to guess part of the twist early on, but there is enough extra to make it no less satisfying. This has jumped in as an early fav of 2017 for me. 9/10 - DirectorMorten TyldumStarsJennifer LawrenceChris PrattMichael SheenA malfunction in a sleeping pod on a spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet wakes one passenger 90 years early.Mar 4
Beautiful looking sci fi film that I enjoyed even more on a repeat viewing. For a film with basically a 2 person cast, its impressive that there isnt a dull moment. I would never have thought an animated film about a singing competition would hold my interest let along be good. A strong soundtrack and cute characters set this ahead of the usual non Disney animation we usually get. Easily the best that Illumination has brought us. 7/10 - DirectorMacon BlairStarsMelanie LynskeyChris DoubekMarilyn Faith HickeyWhen a depressed woman is burgled, she finds a new sense of purpose by tracking down the thieves along with her obnoxious neighbor. The effects hold up particularly well for a movie nearly 25 years old. It was fun watching it with Sawyer for the first time. I was expecting more of a superhero movie, so was somewhat disappointed by the attempt to turn it into a drama with some superhero scenes. Many of the scenes between action sequences made the film drag on and on. As for the superheros, Logan and Dr x were underwhelming aside from a few moments. All the action scenes with the young girl were loads of fun. The movie could have been better had it been more about her and less about Logan. Maybe the worst part was that the scenes with the other kids felt goofy like they were made for a younger audience despite the R rating. 7/10 - DirectorTodd Strauss-SchulsonStarsTaissa FarmigaMalin AkermanAdam DevineA young woman grieving the loss of her mother, a famous scream queen from the 1980s, finds herself pulled into the world of her mom's most famous movie. Surprisingly not bad for a movie based on an app. Crazy to think that this is one of the better films based on a game. The voice work is decent. The story is a little too simple for a feature film. I wish the jokes had stayed more kid friendly though. Sawyer seems to want to keep watching these films. It could be worse I suppose. The music makes it entertaining and the characters bring back memories of when I'd watch the cartoon as a kid. This is probably the worst of the 4 films though thanks to so much time being spent on David Cross's over the top character. 5/10 - DirectorWalt BeckerStarsJason LeeJustin LongMatthew Gray GublerThe Chipmunks believe that Dave plans to propose to his new girlfriend in Miami.--and dump them. While I respect that they decided to change up the story some from the original and the Peter Jackson remake, they took out everything that gave those films heart. The result is that this was a film with lots of action and nothing more. The action and effects were well done at least. 7/10 - DirectorEwan McGregorStarsEwan McGregorJennifer ConnellyDakota FanningAn All-American college star and his beauty queen wife watch their seemingly perfect life fall apart as their daughter joins the turmoil of '60s America.Mar 17
I avoided this at Tiff and was glad I did when I saw that it got panned critically. Now I'm happy that I gave it a chance. It has plenty of problems, likely all caused by first time director Ewan McGregor's lack of experience. The story was compelling and the characters were strong. I would have preferred a different ending. The attempt to make it more shocking backfired. 7/10 - DirectorBilly O'BrienStarsMax RecordsChristopher LloydLaura FraserIn a small Midwestern town, a troubled teen with homicidal tendencies must hunt down and destroy a supernatural killer while keeping his own inner demons at bay.Mar 17
Not bad storywise, but not well executed. Christopher Lloyd in the cast helps though not enough to ignore the bigger problems. Lots of good elements, like Lloyd's characters weirdness and the main character's serial killer obsession. Unfortunately it didnt manage to bring all of that together to make a meaningful point. 6/10 - DirectorRob ReinerStarsTom CruiseJack NicholsonDemi MooreMilitary lawyer Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee defends Marines accused of murder. Disappointing Netflix original psychological horror. I like the premise of the psychologist needing psychiatric help themselves after a tragedy. Unfortunately they didn't bother going some of the obvious places they could go with that concept. Instead it stayed very safe and straightforward (for the genre). Even when she appeared to be her sane and sober self she was making the same bad decisions any bimbo in a horror film would normally make. 4/10 - DirectorBill CondonStarsEmma WatsonDan StevensLuke EvansA selfish Prince is cursed to become a monster for the rest of his life, unless he learns to fall in love with a beautiful young woman he keeps prisoner.Mar 21
I was a bit worried about where they would go with this film and how they would treat the remake considering how much I love the original. I would be so easy to get it wrong. Thankfully they got it almost perfectly right! The songs remained intact and were performed well. I don't think I've felt this excited watching a movie in awhile. Seeing the amazing songs from the animated film brought to life was pretty exciting. The new songs were not as strong as the ones brought over from the original film, but there wasnt a bad song either.
