- DirectorMel GibsonStarsAndrew GarfieldSam WorthingtonLuke BraceyWorld War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, serving during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.Mel Gibson is back!! Once again he delivers a soul shaking film that will make all your problems seem miniscule. A story of faith and patriotism, this real life event will show you that super heroes do exist and that they are ordinary people just like you and me. Andrew Garfield delivers my favourite performance of the entire year. Officially my favourite war film of all time!
10/10 - DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.A storyline so smart and thought provoking that it will make as obsessed as Amy Adams' character. This will go down as one of the greatest Sci-Fi films of all time
10/10 - DirectorGarth DavisStarsDev PatelNicole KidmanRooney MaraA five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.Dev Patel gives one of the best performances of the year. A story so unique that you won't believe that it is actually a true story until the credits role! I tearjerker that will make you appreciate the family that you have.
9/10 - DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.Best comic book movie since the Winter Soldier, maybe even since The Dark Knight. The conflict is justified on both sides. Twists and turns that this film will take you on will leave you on the edge of your seat. Good luck choosing a side!
- DirectorTom FordStarsAmy AdamsJake GyllenhaalMichael ShannonA wealthy art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a symbolic revenge tale. What is your explanation to this movies ending? Everyone has their own theory, and that is what makes it great! During the highway scene, I was so enthralled that I didn't realise that I was holding my breathe until the scene was over and I could barely breath.
- DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsFelicity JonesDiego LunaAlan TudykIn a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.Putting the war back in Star Wars! Thank you for make Darth Vader a badass again
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.A love letter to classic Hollywood, a true feel good movie with an excellent soundtrack. I don't think that it is as good as all the hype would have you believe. However it is still a very good movie! One of the years best
- DirectorByron HowardRich MooreJared BushStarsGinnifer GoodwinJason BatemanIdris ElbaIn a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.Bringing up more matures themes than most films would dare, Zootopia is possibly the best animated feature of the year!
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1980s the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive through bringing destruction to the world. The first 10 minutes of this film are perhaps the greatest of any action film this year. This film delivers everything that I would want out of an X-man film, and I even like Apocalypse himself. I think that the direction they took with his character was an improvement on his comics/cartoon portrayals. The spiritual themes are far superior to his comic book cosmic origins
- DirectorTimur BekmambetovStarsJack HustonToby KebbellRodrigo SantoroJudah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother, an officer in the Roman army, returns to his homeland after years at sea to seek revenge, but finds redemption.I might be the only man alive you actually loved this movie, and I am willing to defend it. The acting was tremendous. Toby Kebbell gives a performance that forces us to empathise with his characters motivations and character arc.
Whilst many will take issue with the ending of this film and its drastic change from the 1959 film, I think that for the film they crafted, it is an improvement. If they kept the movie as is and ended the film the same way that the 1959 version did, it would not have worked. However this film was built on much stronger spiritual themes than the previous film, thus the ending was fitting.
If I was to make one criticism, the leading man wasn't the best choice. Whilst Jack Huston still gave a good performance, he doesn't have the gravitas over the film the same way that Charlton Heston did.
In my opinion, I hold both Ben-Hur films (1959 & 2016) in the same esteem. I love both and I implore you to give this movie a chance before you allow its IMDb score to scare you away - DirectorJon FavreauStarsNeel SethiBill MurrayBen KingsleyAfter a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther Bagheera and free-spirited bear Baloo. The nostalgia is strong with this one. The casting was perfect, the visuals were breathtaking. The perfect family adventure
- DirectorBarry JenkinsStarsMahershala AliNaomie HarrisTrevante RhodesA young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.I find it interesting how this film is able to convey the passing of time better than even Boyhood was able to. Barry Jenkins was able to craft a masterpiece conveying the fragility of the human condition and showing us how our future is not separate from our past. A heartfelt movie that will stay with you long after you have left the theatre
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRussell CroweRyan GoslingAngourie RiceIn 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star.No one can do better buddy cops duos than Shane Black! Ryan Gosling gives the best comedic performance of the year. Yes, I like this performance better than even his efforts in La La Land, and I love La La Land! The script is so smart and funny. I can not give enough praise to this film.
- DirectorTheodore MelfiStarsTaraji P. HensonOctavia SpencerJanelle MonáeThe story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.A wonderfully uplifting story of hope and determination.
- DirectorKenneth LonerganStarsCasey AffleckMichelle WilliamsKyle ChandlerA depressed uncle is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies.Casey Affleck gives a masterclass in acting. A movie so real that any ordinary person could step right into the shoes of any of its characters.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks. Finally, we can forget Wolverine: Origins........
Ryan Reynolds gives his all, and it pays off spectacularly - DirectorScott DerricksonStarsBenedict CumberbatchChiwetel EjioforRachel McAdamsWhile on a journey of physical and spiritual healing, a brilliant neurosurgeon is drawn into the world of the mystic arts.Perhaps the most unique entry on this list, Marvel gave us a film that will remain in our hearts
- DirectorDenzel WashingtonStarsDenzel WashingtonViola DavisStephen McKinley HendersonA working-class African-American father tries to raise his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life. Both Denzel Washington & Viola Davis give the performance of their lives. In parts this film may still feel like a stage play and it will not be remembered for its direction or cinematography.... but it will be held in high esteem for decades to come, purely for its incredible performances. Certainly worth a watch
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerDon HallStarsAuli'i CravalhoDwayne JohnsonRachel HouseIn ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out Maui to set things right. What can I say? Except, you're welcome, for recommending this movie
- DirectorGavin O'ConnorStarsBen AffleckAnna KendrickJ.K. SimmonsAs a math savant uncooks the books for a new client, the Treasury Department closes in on his activities, and the body count starts to rise.An underrated film that uniquely does not portray autism as a weakness, and its sufferers as victims. Rather it shows us that it can play to our strengths. And whilst doing all that, it delivers one kickass action flick
- DirectorDavid MackenzieStarsChris PineBen FosterJeff BridgesToby is a divorced father who's trying to make a better life. His brother is an ex-con with a short temper and a loose trigger finger. Together, they plan a series of heists against the bank that's about to foreclose on their family ranch. This movie came as a breath of fresh air in the midst of all the horrible summer blockbusters that came out this year.
