Personal favourites
I have different reasons why these are my favourite movies, mostly personal things that I'll tell you about. Whether you are interested or not about my stories I highly recommend the following movies if you wish to see unique movies & acting.
+WARNING: some of these are R-rated movies, and not appropriate for children so please don't play 'Hostel' at movie night with kids. It wouldn't be fair, they might not understand the historical background or the link between the shown brutality and the complexity of some stories, so be responsible!
Thank you for your time, have a nice day!

- DirectorRon FrickeStarsPatrick DisantoA collection of expertly photographed scenes of human life and religion.I remember this is the only movie my dad ever recommended me to watch. There is not a single word spoken in this piece, no narratives, no script just pure life and I found it Perfect. Not the average documentary that you may see on NatGeo or Discovery channel. I remember watching this piece with my dad by my side, I won't ever forget that feeling. I was too young to understand and/or remember everything in the film and he was telling me about those issues, described the whole background and when did those things happened and how they turned out. I've always respected his knowledge and his views and this particular documentary means a lot to me personally and let's not forget the fact that it is aesthetical perfection and also has a deep meaning that takes time to digest.
-2017. january 14. - DirectorSidney LumetStarsHenry FondaLee J. CobbMartin BalsamThe jury in a New York City murder trial is frustrated by a single member whose skeptical caution forces them to more carefully consider the evidence before jumping to a hasty verdict.I was born in 1995 and I'm not really fond of older movies... -well, it's not a good thing I suppose- HOWEVER this movie is my favourite one in the sense of acting. I know only a few things about film making as a profession (at the university I had American Film & Movie Analysation classes). I'm more like a movie addict kid who enjoys a good piece and this is what I always want to see after I buy a ticket for any movie. Never seen a better single set movie in my life. I'd say, yeah the story was okay and I bet that issue in America meant a lot more than it meant to me (when I first seen it as 12-year-old Hungarian) that time of my life but even I could feel that the actors were more exceptional and theatrical as usual and it gave a unique vibration to the movie. (I've seen it 30 times, I even wrote reviews and essays about it)
-2017. january 14. - DirectorJordan Vogt-RobertsStarsNick RobinsonGabriel BassoMoises AriasThree teenage friends, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land. The reason why this movie is on this list could be timing. I've finished high-school that year as I've seen this film for the first time ... a few months after (all of) my BEST friends decided to continue their studies abroad - thousands of miles away. This is supposed to be a mix of comedy, drama and adventure, but I have to admit that I cried way more than I laughed while watching this. I like melancholic movies equally as much as I like powerful and energetic ones and this is a mixture of those - if I wanted to properly explain it then I'd say it is the closest description of what a teenager feels and desire the most. Okay, of course not any teenager, but I could relate to this piece a 100% that time.
-2017. january 14. - DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.Another movie with extraordinary acting. I have to tell that I'm not a professional musician (though I play the bass and guitar for my own enjoyment since 2010) but I have a lot of friends who actually chose this profession and I can tell that the movie is not that realistic BUT who the hell even care about that when you are exposed to one of the best acting of all time. I LOVE MUSIC so of course that was the main reason why I've decided to watch this movie on the first place and then the movie blocked the real world around me. I'm astonished by J.K. Simmons' performace, it reminded me of R. Lee Ermey's character (Hartman if I remember correctly) in "Full Metal Jacket (1987)".
'Acting is reacting, baby' - I don't know from whom I've heard this line, but it fits perfectly here since Miles Teller formed a perfect duo with Simmons. We may thank to whoever decided to cast these two actors for the main roles. We should. Everyday!
-2017. january 14. - DirectorTakeshi KitanoStarsTakeshi KitanoYusuke SekiguchiKayoko KishimotoA young, naive boy sets out alone on the road to find his wayward mother. Soon he finds an unlikely protector in a crotchety man and the two have a series of unexpected adventures along the way.I've came across with Japanese culture when I was about 8-9 years old but I've seen this when I was 20. So that time I knew a bit more about the country and the people and of course the movie industry as well. Few years before I decided to watch this movie I've heard a piano song in a car commercial, it was really catchy, melancholic and somehow nostalgic... then years later when I was going through my music library I decided to look up who was the performer of the song and it led me to the amazing composer (who is one of my favourites ever since), Joe Hisaishi and this movie, since it turned out that that particular song was the theme of this film. I also knew Takeshi Kitano (who plays Kikujiro) for a while, I've seen some of his films and read one of his books as well. ... if I said that "Kings of summer (2013)" told us about a teenager's feeling then this one tell us about how a middle age man can relate to a little child (no pedophilia included). It is a really heartwarming and funny movie even if it is sad and melancholic from the start. I lost my grandfather when I was young and Kikujiro reminds me of him and the adventures we had together.
-2017. january 14. - DirectorBennett MillerStarsPhilip Seymour HoffmanClifton Collins Jr.Catherine KeenerIn 1959, Truman Capote learns of the murder of a Kansas family and decides to write a book about the case. While researching for his novel In Cold Blood, Capote forms a relationship with one of the killers, Perry Smith, who is on death row.
- DirectorBrett RatnerStarsAnthony HopkinsEdward NortonRalph FiennesA retired FBI agent with psychological gifts is assigned to help track down "The Tooth Fairy", a mysterious serial killer. Aiding him is imprisoned forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter.Thomas Harris created probably the first serial killer/psychopath that I had a crush on. Don't get me wrong I only like these type of people as fictional characters. I'm talking about Hannibal Lecter. Sadly I can't remember whether I've seen the movies before I've read the books or the other way round but I know that Dr Lecter always owned a special place in my heart. He is sophysticated, charming, talented, extremely smart and prepossessing man. I think that if it wouldn't be for the murders then he would be the perfect man. And of course the acting is on point again for the horrifying but amazing story. I mean it for the whole cast... I've seen "Manhunter (1986)" which was the first movie adaptation of the same book but I have to tell you that that movie wasn't as good as this masterpiece. Sir Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter is one of the best casting choices of the history of movies (in my opinion). I'm not sure if it is appropriate to say but I feel like that he was born to have this role. Ralph Fiennes as Dolarhyde was a huge surprise for me since I've seen him mostly in roles of charming characters before (except Voldemort) but I'm not gonna lie, he showed that he has many faces and I wasn't disappointed. Oh, and there is another reason I have there, one of the favourite actors of mine, Philip Seymour Hoffman - who sadly passed away almost exactly 3 years ago.
-2017. january 14. - DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsJodie FosterAnthony HopkinsScott GlennA young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims. To be honest I loved this movie of Hannibal-stories a bit less than "Red dragon" but I'm still not sure why. Maybe it is a bit too much of romace for me that goes between Hannibal and Clarice or maybe because I found Ted Levine's Jame Gumb less appealing character than Ralph Fiennes's Francis Dolarhyde but thanks to one of these reasons I had to decide this way. It disturbs me a lot because on the other hand I loved Sir Anthony Hopkin's Hannibal in this movie the most because he is so fierce, powerful and mysterious. And the endig of this movie is my favourite as well (from the Hannibal stories, not of all time).
-2017. january 14. - DirectorRidley ScottStarsAnthony HopkinsJulianne MooreGary OldmanLiving in exile, Dr. Hannibal Lecter tries to reconnect with now disgraced F.B.I. Agent Clarice Starling, and finds himself a target for revenge from a powerful victim.
- DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.
- DirectorSean PennStarsEmile HirschVince VaughnCatherine KeenerAfter graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gives his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.My best friend recommended this one a couple of years before but I've seen it just a few days ago. I cried my soul out and I think I'm not able to think clearly about the topic. I truly loved the story, the ending is extremely depressing but I was able to understand what was going on in the character's minds, their reasons and decisions made perfect sense to me. I don't think that the acting was extraordinary this time the story meant more than the acting even though that was good as well.
I was born into a hiking-travelling family with my sister. So the bond between nature and human is the part of this movie I can clearly understand. There is something romantic being alone in the wild, there is something horrifying being alone in the wild also there is something adventurous being together with someone in the wild and this movie was able to depict all of these.
Leaving everything and everyone behind is really hard, but it makes you physically and mentally stronger and self-confident if you overcome the hardships by your own knowledge and creativity without money and all the modern tools.
-2017. january 14. - DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days. This is a perfect example for the fact that Asia is never out of ideas, never disappoints. One of the best twists in the movie history... EVER! And we shall never forget the exceptional camera work on this bad boy. I know there is an American remake of the film, but I believe that this is the real art. It is a 9/10 for me because the typical Asian overacting is slightly disturbing for my taste, it was okay in the past century and it is an early 2000's movie, but for me it is an absolute no-no.
-2018. august 01. - CreatorBryan FullerStarsHugh DancyMads MikkelsenCaroline DhavernasExplores the early relationship between renowned psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter and a young FBI criminal profiler who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers. Here we go again with Hannibal but with more original stories and the most aesthetically appealing series of this decade (at least). When I thought that I can't get more of my favourite then came the news saying that my favourite actor will play my favourite fictional character. Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick - these two were my favourite directors, their works are what I loved the most before... before the Hannibal series. I've never seen shots so perfectly taken, the compositions, colours, the lighting, props and the haunting animations together. The whole style of the series is inimitable, I don't only mean it visually, but the stories as well. I found it weird that in the past years autistic characters raided the screen but I never expected to see a Will Graham like Hugh Dancy's, this twist makes the story more exciting and unpredictable (his acting is extremely realistic, I can tell you that since my sister has asperger syndrome).
Mads Mikkelsen ... I'm biased, sorry. He is like a slaughterer waiting for the perfect moment to butcher his precious pet. His character is perfectly written and fits even more perfectly between Gaspard Ulliel's young Hannibal as seen in "Hannibal rising (2007)" and Hopkins' old Hannibal as seen in "Silence of the lambs (1991)", "Hannibal (2001)" and "Red dragon (2002)". It fills the gaps of those years unwritten by Thomas Harris and show us true deep - dark horror and action.

- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsMichael CaineJude LawHarold PinterOn his sprawling country estate, an aging writer matches wits with the struggling actor who has stolen his wife's heart.Okay, before anyone says anything, I know that this is a remake of "Sleuth (1972)" and I've seen the original as well, but since it is a two-actor movie and of those two Michael Caine played in both movies - we can say it is a bit different remake.
I may have not included both movies in this list, but the only reason for that is because I see these two as one story that continued in the future. This is just my POV. You don't have to agree with me, I too know it is a bit weird.
Taking that away, again can't say much without spoilers, but the one I can and must say that the acting was on point from each actor.

- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsKenji MizuhashiYoshimi KondouSatomi HanamuraTold in three interconnected segments, Takaki tells the story of his life as cruel winters, cold technology, and finally, adult obligations and responsibility converge to test the delicate petals of love.Well, I've seen this anime movie plenty of times and I always get emotional. I'm not saying that if you don't do the same then you have no soul but that would be true though.
I love different animations since I've known television, of course that is not a surprise, I'm from that generation of young people who were waking up for the '6AM morning cartoon matinee' every day.
But the small details in this movie are amazing, it is so realistic and magical how much animators and background artists invested in this piece of art.
Emotions also make this movie exceptional, this movie will make you feel everything you are capable of. Your emotions will dance vigorously in front of you as you are watching this.
The OSTs are also fitting for each scene and will stay with you after the movie as well.
