I just couldn't find anything interesting in the narcissistic, over-indulged rich bitches plotting to murder each other over a hangnail... Absolutely MY BIAS, I admit, since obviously many others must have liked it for it to be so highly rated. Had I been able to stay awake long enough, I might have seen something engaging too, but two episodes were two too many hours that I will never get back...

A brilliant and original re-telling of L. Frank Baum's classic . This could easily have been embarrassingly bad, but instead, it teases out the darker side if the take with contemporary and post-apocalyptic arcs. It haunted me for days. Why they cast Elisabeth Moss in the lead is a total mystery since there are so many talented actresses who actually can ACT... Ugh.

Here's a great example of Hollywood falling so in love with itself that it loses touch with authentic story-telling.

Votes: 149,125

The first episode, Shovels & Keys, is a haunting, brilliant beginning, dense with provocative references to things past, present and future which eventually will be revealed. With Kristoffer Nyholm directing, it's written by Chips Hardy (Tom Hardy's father), Tom Hardy & Steven Knight, the 3 creators of the series. Do yourself a favor and watch it twice before going on to the next episode. It comes close to perfection in every aspect. I suspect it may rank 10 stars but at this early stage I'll be cautious and give it a...

Sean Bean brilliantly balances his performance as a parish priest between exquisitely raw and genuine piety so that he never slips into cliche or stereotype. This drama neither makes a case for or against the Church but instead it is the story of human beings stumbling through life the way we really do. It's the best portrayal of Catholics I've ever seen.

Exquisite portrayal of a difficult subject, avoiding all the cliches, never glamorizing the motives but instead, giving us a deeper understanding and empathy for the characters and situation. Emily Watson, Ben Chaplin and Mark Bonnar deliver brilliant performances without ever flaunting their considerable talents or upstaging each other or the story. This is a perfect study in 'less is more'. I watched it twice and it was even more powerful the second viewing.

Ambitious in telling the complicated history of the social, racial and political proliferation of cocaine/crack in this country beginning in the early 80s, (even though it actually started at least 10 years earlier), Snowfall zeros in on the intimate stories of the people involved. The effect is that we see that nothing about it was straightforward or simple. It does a decent job of dramatizing the motives of the players in this complicated, covert and insidious history, putting the CIA's crimes on the same level as African American and Latino crimes. Every player has a 'greater good' in mind that's used to justify the atrocities they all find themselves committing as they sink into the inevitable quicksand of the drug world. Without glamorizing, without condemning, without moralizing, Snowfall leaves you with the distinct experience that it was never, ever as trivial or moronic as just saying 'no'.

I was skeptical since Stephen King writes more often with a bludgeon instead of a pen. Still, he's had his moments of genius... And the cast was so damned good that in a moment of weakness, I tuned in to the pilot just to see Brendan Gleeson and Mary-Louise Parker together. I have to admit, I was was hooked right way--carnage, clowns (hey, it's Stephen King--of course he'll slip in a creepy clown...) and all. Considering how hard they've made it to find and watch, (currently only available on At&T U-verse or DirectTV), Brendan Gleeson's performance is worth the effort. The rest of the cast is equally good.

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Ex undercover UK cop turned police chief of a small town in the Canadian Rockies does what he must to defend his family from those in power whether it's the oilmen, the preachers or the gangsters.

Stars: Tim Roth, Genevieve O'Reilly, Abigail Lawrie, Oliver Coopersmith

Votes: 15,993

Some excellent plot twists peppered with a few predictable ones but it doesn't presume the audience can't figure out the obvious which, IMHO, gives it more to recommend it than not. The superb acting from the big star characters, (Roth being an old fav of mine), is matched by the lesser known actors. Oliver Coopersmith gives a stand-out performance in his unique, complex and believable portrayal of the killer. Casting Christopher Heyerdahl as the other psychopath might have actually hurt the story since he basically plays a variation of The Swede (Hell on Wheels) but he's so wonderfully weird that I enjoyed his performance anyway. Overall, even with its flaws, it's one of the better Amazon Originals.

92. Mindhunter (2017–2019)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

In the late 1970s, two FBI agents broaden the realm of criminal science by investigating the psychology behind murder and end up getting too close to real-life monsters.

Stars: Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, Hannah Gross

Votes: 336,395

Original storyline, concentrating the early days of profiling serial killers and how it developed and evolved. They stay very true to the actual psychology of serial murderers which must have been hard since reality is so much weirder than fiction. Some standout performances from Cameron Britton playing real-life killer, Edmund Kemper and Jack Erdie playing Richard Speck. But it's much harder to play the ordinary Joe and sustain 10 episodes and Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany do excellent jobs of this. Anna Torv's performance was uninspired but she still gives a professional performance.

With Netflix's absolutely HORRIBLE 2017 programing, this series is good enough to keep me from cancelling my subscription, in the hope that they find their way through the pitfalls of success. (After all, how do you top Sense8?) For originality alone, I'll give it

Votes: 4,957

Helen McCrory is a hot property right now and here she shows why. This series is intriguingly complex, revealing layer upon layer as she peels away evidence. I wish the story arcs weren't so over-used. Still, it's worth the watch for fans of British detective shows and for the moral of the story.

98. Rellik (2017)

60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Told in reverse, the show follows DCI Gabriel Markham and his team as they try to hunt down a serial killer.

Stars: Richard Dormer, Jodi Balfour, Kieran Bew, Lærke Winther

Votes: 2,659

Rellik, ('killer' backwards), isn't exactly told in reverse, but more in the natural way that normal people would tell stories, e.g. with sidebars, flashbacks, and oh-by-the-ways. Since we're conditioned to watch TV stories unfold in a linear way, Rellik may take getting used to, but it's brilliantly stitched together by writing-brothers Harry Williams and Jack Williams who seem genius in their ability to time EXACTLY when the audience will wonder, "Wait now, WHO did such & such?" If you liked the way that sister-writers Lana & Lilly Wachowski told Sense8, you'll resonate to Williams' style. Director/Producer Sam Miller, lends his signature nuvo-noir style (Luther, Fortitude & Guerilla), sharing directorial roles with Hans Herbots (Spiral, Verlengd Weekend). It's definitely a creep-fest of likely suspects with lead Richard Dormer (GofT) actually delivering a more believable performance when he's hideously scarred than when not. Far more restrained and nuanced is the performance by co-star Jodi Balfour, who is the better actor.

Don't believe the poor IMdB rating. Rellik is a brilliant series that attempts to examine not just the killer's motive, but the interlocking motives of all the other players--think Heisenberg's uncertainty principle applied to human behavior.

100. SMILF (2017–2019)

TV-MA | 30 min | Comedy, Drama

A single, 20-something mom struggles to find a happy work/life balance.

Stars: Frankie Shaw, Miguel Gomez, Samara Weaving, Anna Chanel Reimer

Votes: 5,493

If your criterion for a good show is in the acting, writing, etc., then you'd rate this show higher than my 3 stars. But this show goes too far over the top in TMI factor, trying to substitute it for substance. Gratuitous shock value is best left to the brilliance of the Tarantinos of this world. If there is anything redeeming in this show, it is overshadowed by smut and generally despicable characters.
