Gus Van Sant brings some Elliott Smith into the picture and completes this film and makes it great.

Another film with a disturbing subject matter, portrayed effectively. The camera work matches the title, and the performances are great and natural. Super realistic and down to earth.

Very accurately portrays growing up.

Stand by Me shows both sides of being young, positive and negative, and the importance of preserving the time you have when you're young. River Phoenix delivers one of the best performances ever from a child actor.

Very funny at points but also has a side that accurately shows teenage life. It doesn't over-glorify teenage things such as sex like most teen films do, it portrays it very well and realistically, for its time at least. Jennifer Jason Leigh is great as Stacy, as well as Sean Penn as the iconic Spicoli.
