- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.10/10 The film of the summer already even though it's only May, hard hitting spectacle and unexpected substance make this an electric, satisfying and stupendous blockbuster.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingCarey MulliganBryan CranstonA mysterious Hollywood action film stuntman gets in trouble with gangsters when he tries to help his neighbor's husband rob a pawn shop while serving as his getaway driver.10/10 Why the marketing depicted this as a car based action flick when it's so much more than that- a powerful, deep and enthralling display of art-house wizardry- is a mystery.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroRay LiottaJoe PesciThe story of Henry Hill and his life in the mafia, covering his relationship with his wife Karen and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito.9/10 this should have won Best Picture 1990. While meandering, Goodfellas is a superbly acted, brilliantly directed and excellently told gangster movie which emphasizes character and emotion over action and explodes onto the screen with more power than an atom bomb.
- DirectorD.W. GriffithStarsLillian GishRobert HarronMae MarshThe story of a poor young woman separated by prejudice from her husband and baby is interwoven with tales of intolerance from throughout history.9/10 99 years old and this has aged incredibly well. It's aged better in 99 years than The Blair Witch Project did in 15! It was many decades ahead of its time when released. Perhaps even now it's ahead of its time.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacAs a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.9/10 they did it. It sounds quite dull at first. In fact, it's more tense, gripping and powerful than many movies even though it's just a realistic, mundane drama about a marriage breakdown. It produces suspense to rival the greatest Hollywood action sequences.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsTom CruiseJamie FoxxJada Pinkett SmithA cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles.9/10 astonishing visuals, believable and powerful acting and an uncommonly rich script add up to a dazzling crime thriller where Tom Cruise, for once, doesn't phone it in.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSusan SarandonGeena DavisHarvey KeitelTwo best friends set out on an adventure, but it soon turns around to a terrifying escape from being hunted by the police, as these two women escape for the crimes they committed.9/10 a feminist road movie/modern Western combo with unbelievable amounts of drama and one of the best movie endings ever, Thelma & Louise remains one of the highlights of Ridley Scott's career.
- DirectorMichael PowellEmeric PressburgerStarsDeborah KerrDavid FarrarFlora RobsonA group of nuns struggle to establish a convent in the Himalayas, while isolation, extreme weather, altitude, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries mad.9/10 aside from the usual pacing problems which dog many classic films, Black Narcissus is a smart, tense and beautifully shot drama that Britain can be proud of.
- DirectorJustin KurzelStarsMichael FassbenderMarion CotillardJack MadiganMacbeth, the Thane of Glamis, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. - DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsJoaquin PhoenixJosh BrolinOwen WilsonIn 1970, drug-fueled Los Angeles private investigator Larry "Doc" Sportello investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend.9/10 who cares about the confusing plot or lack of coherence? This wonderful and brilliantly eccentric detective story is a criminally underrated effort from Paul Thomas Anderson. Despite being 2 and half hours long it never loses its heart, humour or entertainment value.
- DirectorHenri-Georges ClouzotStarsYves MontandCharles VanelPeter van EyckIn a decrepit South American village, four men are hired to transport an urgent nitroglycerine shipment without the equipment that would make it safe.8/10 although overlong, this foreign gem boasts excruciating amounts of tension and plenty of sharp, smart political commentary, adding up to an uncommonly intelligent suspense thriller which shows the genre doesn't have to be style over substance.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittBruce WillisEmily BluntIn 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent into the past, where a hired gun awaits - someone like Joe - who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back Joe's future self for assassination.8/10 an excellent blockbuster boasting a smart script, fabulous direction and strong performances, this overcomes its detours into silliness and occasional dips and even Bruce Willis doesn't continue his recent trend of phoning it in and gives a fine performance. Take that Michael Bay!
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.8/10 Martin Scorsese's overindulgent dark comedy goes on forever, but offers enough cinematic wizardry to keep your interest. It knows nothing about good taste, but ultimately that's part of the fun and it should have earned DiCaprio his first Oscar.
- DirectorKinji FukasakuStarsTatsuya FujiwaraAki MaedaTarô YamamotoIn the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill one another under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act.8/10 the rare controversial film where you get what the fuss is about, Battle Royal may be disturbing and lack structure but it's relevant, haunting and boasts more kinetic energy than a speeding roller coaster. It's another monument to the brilliance of Japanese cinema.

In 2006, after a fledging European tour Anvil sets out to record their thirteenth album and continue to follow their dreams.8/10 it's a documentary about a heavy metal band that many may not have heard of. It's, believe it or not, more touching, inspirational and cheer inducing than many a huge portion of the feel good movies out there. A very good documentary indeed.
- DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsPatrick SwayzeKeanu ReevesGary BuseyAn F.B.I. Agent goes undercover to catch a gang of surfers who may be bank robbers.8/10 a fun and cheer inducing adrenaline machine boasting some incredibly fun set pieces, this is better than The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty put together. Just ignore the silly plot.
- DirectorDan GilroyStarsJake GyllenhaalRene RussoBill PaxtonWhen Louis Bloom, a con man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.8/10 one of 2014's better films, this isn't easy to watch and has a somewhat artificial feel, but it's a chilling and relevant piece of commentary boasting a hauntingly brilliant performance from Jake Gyllenhaal.
- DirectorMichael MooreStarsMichael MooreCharlton HestonMarilyn MansonFilmmaker Michael Moore explores the roots of America's predilection for gun violence.8/10 Michael Moore sometimes distorts the truth and is somewhat biased, but he's a very skilled documentary filmmaker who really does try and make a serious point.

A kids movie for grown ups, this is the Pixar we remember.
- DirectorGeorge Roy HillStarsPaul NewmanRobert RedfordKatharine RossIn 1890s Wyoming, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid lead a band of outlaws. When a train robbery goes wrong, they find themselves on the run with a posse hard on their heels. After considering their options, they escape to South America.8/10 it may be slow and lack the action one expects from a film of its kind but great performances and a brilliantly written screenplay make this one of cinema's most likable Westerns.
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseRebecca FergusonJeremy RennerEthan and his team take on their most impossible mission yet when they have to eradicate an international rogue organization as highly skilled as they are and committed to destroying the IMF.8/10 palm sweating suspense, death defying action and an actually interesting plot make this a rip roaring thrill ride without the safety bar.
- DirectorHarmony KorineStarsVanessa HudgensSelena GomezAshley BensonFour college girls hold up a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation. While partying, drinking, and taking drugs, they are arrested, only to be bailed out by a drug and arms dealer.8/10 far deeper, more intelligent and better than many will have you believe, this is a controversy magnet done properly, and with its stinging social commentary and excellent visuals (despite dull parts) this is one awesome cinematic party you don't want to miss. An excellent art-house film.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsMatt DamonJessica ChastainKristen WiigAn astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and can survive until a potential rescue.8/10 it may be too long but with its fantastic script, stunning visuals and strong emotional core it's a long awaited return to form for Ridley Scott.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsAlicia VikanderDomhnall GleesonOscar IsaacA young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.8/10 over-extended but flawlessly written and constructed, this minimalistic but unbelievably deep and thought provoking meditation on AI is destined for science fiction classic status.
- DirectorJohn WooStarsChow Yun-FatDanny LeeSally YehA disillusioned assassin accepts one last hit in hopes of using his earnings to restore vision to a singer he accidentally blinded.8/10 mad, over the top action sequences, jaw dropping style and a genuinely affecting story with characters you care about. John Woo at the top of his form.
- DirectorJennifer KentStarsEssie DavisNoah WisemanDaniel HenshallA single mother and her child fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children's book titled "Mister Babadook" manifests in their home.8/10 this is a true horror film which has actual horror, tension and fear and while it may not be fast paced enough for horror fans used to the usual terrible jump scare fests that are actually accepted as horror films, it does what the genre is meant to do: It uses nightmarish scenarios to examine human fears and emotions.
- DirectorDavid Robert MitchellStarsMaika MonroeKeir GilchristOlivia LuccardiA young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.8/10 it may lose its way by the end, but this terrifying and beautifully shot horror film is possibly the only horror from 2015 that is genuinely worth watching, and it boasts one of the best soundtracks of the year.
- DirectorJafar PanahiStarsMaryiam Palvin AlmaniNargess MamizadehMojgan FaramarziVarious women struggle to function in the oppressively sexist society of contemporary Iran.8/10 brilliantly constructed, filmed and harrowing without even always showing that much, circles have never been more distressing. It can feel like a collection of symbols instead of a film, but it's essential viewing and deserves to be seen by more people.
- DirectorMarzieh MakhmalbafStarsFatemeh Cherag AkharHassan NebhanShahr Banou SisizadehA film comprised of three interconnected vignettes that depict women at three stages of life in Iran. The first part centers on a young girl on her ninth birthday who is told that she can no longer play with the boys she had been playing with only the day before because she is now a woman. Told from the perspective of a 9-year-old girl who does not feel like or know what the word "woman" refers to, we see how devastatingly this affects both the girl and the boy with whom she had been friends. The second part is about a young woman who decides to enter a bicycle race against her husband's wishes. As first, the husband and then increasing numbers of men from her village ride beside her on horseback to convince her to return home. The race begins to symbolize a freedom that she desperately wants from the limitations that have been placed on her. Finally, the third part shows us an old woman who has come into some money and is now free to do what she wants. The way she chooses to use this freedom, however, makes one wonder just how free she is.8/10 it may seem a bit indulgent and not everyone will get it, but its uniqueness, subtlety, symbolism and quiet emotional power make it essential and fascinating viewing for fans of world cinema.
- DirectorBen WheatleyStarsNeil MaskellMyAnna BuringHarry SimpsonNearly a year after a botched job, a hitman takes a new assignment with the promise of a big payoff for three killings. What starts off as an easy task soon unravels, sending the killer into the heart of darkness.8/10 a slow burn thriller which piles on the chills and thrills masterfully before building up to something truly sensational.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom HanksMark RylanceAlan AldaDuring the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers.8/10 hardly Spielberg's best or most compelling, but as a well made, strongly scripted and tense cold war thriller it's highly effective though not definitive. Mark Rylance needs to be nominated for an Oscar.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsMichael FassbenderKate WinsletSeth RogenSteve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution, to paint a portrait of the man at its epicenter. The story unfolds backstage at three iconic product launches, ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac.8/10 a box office bomb which deserved better, this brilliantly acted and filmed if at times artificial biopic deviates from other films of its type with an unusual and highly effective theatrical structure supported with a typically outstanding script by Aaron Sorkin.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisWith his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.8/10 David Fincher's directing and the all around strong acting make this an effective and haunting thriller, although its detached tone and terrible ending make it undeserving of its spot on the IMDB top 250.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsColin FirthTaron EgertonSamuel L. JacksonA spy organisation recruits a promising street kid into the agency's training program, while a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.8/10 don't expect substance or good taste, but this high octane spy comedy boasts an incredible cast, dazzling visual flair and an irresistible sense of fun. A very enjoyable film indeed.
- DirectorJames WanStarsVin DieselPaul WalkerDwayne JohnsonDeckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for his comatose brother.8/10 this blockbuster dream machine storms onto the screen with swagger, adrenaline, fun and heart and smashes the speed-o-meter, thrill-o-meter and -cheer-o-meter to smithereens. The plot is a mess though.
- DirectorMorgan SpurlockStarsMorgan SpurlockDaryl IsaacsChemeeka WalkerWhile examining the influence of the fast food industry, Morgan Spurlock personally explores the consequences on his health of a diet of solely McDonald's food for one month.8/10 this documentary has its issues with its message and sometimes feels more like a Jackass stunt, but it conveys its message in a very entertaining and clever way while also provoking plenty of thought.
- DirectorJosh BooneStarsShailene WoodleyAnsel ElgortNat WolffHazel and Gus are teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. They both share the same acerbic wit and a love of books, especially "An Imperial Affliction", so they embark on a journey to visit an author in Amsterdam.8/10 while not as subversive as it thinks it is, if tissue stocks run out it's because this movie was playing nearby. Even I was moved by this one.
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsMichael B. JordanMelonie DiazOctavia SpencerThe story of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008.8/10 a small scale and brief but powerful drama which blends with realism and emotion backed by excellent acting to make one of the better movies in a lacklustre year.
- DirectorJuan José CampanellaStarsRicardo DarínSoledad VillamilPablo RagoA retired legal counselor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior - both of which still haunt him decades later.8/10 the only thing about this that's Oscar worthy is the single shot stadium scene but it's still a well acted and made crime drama that does manage to affect you on an emotional level.
- DirectorRobert J. FlahertyStarsAllakariallakAlice NevalingaCunayouIn this silent predecessor to the modern documentary, film-maker Robert J. Flaherty spends one year following the lives of Nanook and his family, Inuits living in the Arctic Circle.8/10 one of the first documentaries, this is actually stretching 'documentary' a bit since it's mostly staged, but it's an interesting piece of early cinema that makes for an enjoyable watch.
- DirectorTod BrowningKarl FreundStarsBela LugosiHelen ChandlerDavid MannersTransylvanian vampire Count Dracula bends a naive real estate agent to his will, then takes up residence at a London estate where he sleeps in his coffin by day and searches for potential victims by night.8/10 a slow paced but gothic and chilling vampire movie with Bela Lugosi bringing the character to life in a truly frightening manner.
- DirectorPierre MorelStarsLiam NeesonMaggie GraceFamke JanssenA retired CIA agent travels across Europe and relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been kidnapped while on a trip to Paris.8/10 brainless as it is, its many imitators have never reached the heights of this thrilling and energetic action thriller with Liam Neeson on great form.
- DirectorMark BurtonRichard StarzakStarsJustin FletcherJohn SparkesOmid DjaliliWhen Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with the Farmer, a caravan and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it's up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home.7/10 it's not up there with Aardman's best work and is too Americanised, but it still boasts some of the smartest and wittiest animated filmmaking around which will fill the movie theatre with grins.
- DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsJodie FosterAnthony HopkinsScott GlennA young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.7/10 Anthony Hopkins swallows the film whole and the central murder mystery is fairly ordinary, but with its top notch acting and moments of true power this is the rare horror film the Academy were unable to ignore.
- DirectorShane CarruthStarsAmy SeimetzFrank MosleyShane CarruthA man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.7/10 alright so figuring out the plot is like doing rocket science while riding a high speed roller coaster but that's part of the fun! A film which needs patience certainly, but a surreal puzzle worth deciphering.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.7/10 lacking in plot and so intense it borders on unpleasant, this overrated film often feels like getting yelled at while inside a tight crawlspace but the brilliance of the acting, editing, directing and sheer energy cannot be ignored.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsDaniel CraigChristoph WaltzLéa SeydouxA cryptic message from James Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover the existence of a sinister organisation named SPECTRE. With a new threat dawning, Bond learns the terrible truth about the author of all his pain in his most recent missions.7/10 an entertaining action film and a well made addition to the Bond franchise but given the talent involved, this should be more than just good fun and it never comes close to Skyfall or Casino Royale.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloWhen Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it's up to Earth's mightiest heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plan.7/10 overstuffed, unmemorable and pathetically safe, Age of Ultron nevertheless offers another fun 2 and a half hours inside one of the coolest cinematic universes around.
- DirectorMark DindalStarsDavid SpadeJohn GoodmanEartha KittEmperor Kuzco is turned into a llama by his ex-administrator Yzma, and must now regain his throne with the help of Pacha, the gentle llama herder.7/10 certainly not deep or ambitious, but as a light hearted buddy comedy it delivers and isn't as familiar as other Disney movies.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsGerard ButlerLena HeadeyDavid WenhamIn the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. They face insurmountable odds when they are betrayed by a Spartan reject.7/10 it isn't going to win points for subtlety or story depth but it is entertaining, memorable and visually stunning.
- DirectorRichard CurtisStarsHugh GrantMartine McCutcheonLiam NeesonFollows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.7/10 at times the cinematic equivalent of a delightful box of chocolates, at other times the cinematic equivalent of a nauseatingly sweet and overstuffed pudding, Love Actually is ambitious, uneven and won't win Richard Curtis many new fans but it is a fabulously cast, often hilarious and brilliantly British rom com extravaganza.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss and a team of rebels from District 13 prepare for the final battle that will decide the fate of Panem.7/10 it's a bit unfocussed, the lighting is awful and the story suffers heavily from the stupid decision to split the final book in two, but it's a satisfying enough conclusion with the thrills, thematic depth and strong characters that define the franchise.
- DirectorDavid AyerStarsBrad PittShia LaBeoufLogan LermanA grizzled tank commander makes tough decisions as he and his crew fight their way across Germany in April, 1945.7/10 a perfectly competent WWII movie. Nothing special.
- DirectorColin TrevorrowStarsChris PrattBryce Dallas HowardTy SimpkinsA new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.7/10 a bit of a mess but it could have been a lot worse. Packed with adventure, nostalgia and dinosaur mayhem it's the Jurassic Park sequel we've been waiting for since 1993.
- DirectorSeth GordonStarsJason BatemanCharlie DayJason SudeikisThree friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realize they are standing in the way of their happiness.7/10 low, silly and fairly forgettable, this works thanks to a great cast and some genuinely effective gags.
- DirectorLevan GabriadzeStarsHeather SossamanMatthew BohrerCourtney HalversonA group of online chatroom friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.7/10 it's doomed to age horribly and some of the scares are poorly handled, but what could have been just a gimmick works better than expected, and it's surprisingly mature and haunting.
- DirectorWes BallStarsDylan O'BrienKaya ScodelarioWill PoulterThomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape.7/10 it's got structural problems and is full of clichés, but with its dark tone, surprisingly intelligent thrills and strong performances it's better than many films of its type.
- DirectorAmma AsanteStarsGugu Mbatha-RawMatthew GoodeEmily WatsonThe biracial daughter, Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), of Royal Navy Captain Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode) is raised by aristocratic Great-uncle Lord William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) in 18th century England.7/10 very forgettable, but its a period drama with interesting themes and strong performances which makes it worth a viewing and is overall a good British movie.
- DirectorBaltasar KormákurStarsJason ClarkeAng Phula SherpaThomas M. WrightOn May 10, 1996, mountain guides Rob Hall and Scott Fischer combine their expedition teams for a final ascent to the summit of Mount Everest. With little warning, a storm strikes the mountain and the climbers must now battle to survive.7/10 some of the writing is flawed and it was mismarketed but unexpected emotional depth and strong visuals make this a haunting survival story with an excellent cast.
- DirectorJoe WrightStarsKeira KnightleyJames McAvoyBrenda BlethynThirteen-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit.6/10 I'm not sure about this one. Beautiful cinematography and powerful themes don't make up for a style over substance approach, a script which isn't as moving as it should be and long spells of boredom. Still, the beach scene rivals the opening of Saving Private Ryan.
- DirectorRob CohenStarsVin DieselPaul WalkerMichelle RodriguezLos Angeles police officer Brian O'Conner must decide where his loyalty really lies when he becomes enamored with the street racing world he has been sent undercover to destroy.6/10 it's hard to see how this launched such a big franchise but while it hasn't aged well it's still an entertaining action movie and better than it looks. You may want to skip ahead to Fast Five though.
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoSeth RogenRandall ParkDave Skylark and his producer Aaron Rapaport run the celebrity tabloid show "Skylark Tonight". When they land an interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Jong-Un Kim, they are recruited by the CIA to assassinate him.6/10 even though it caused an international incident underneath the hype it's just another silly and immature but funny comedy that uses crudeness to get its laughs.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsHenry CavillArmie HammerAlicia VikanderIn the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.6/10 a fiercely unmemorable spy thriller that has interesting elements but has the impact of a feather pillow against stone.
- DirectorRussell CroweStarsRussell CroweOlga KurylenkoJai CourtneyAn Australian man travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli to try to locate his three missing sons.6/10 Russell Crowe performs well, as does the rest of the cast, and shows some promise as a director but the film is unfocussed, incoherent and subsequently isn't as moving as it should have been.
- DirectorRobert SchwentkeStarsJodie FosterPeter SarsgaardSean BeanA bereaved woman and her daughter are flying home from Berlin to America. At 30,000 feet, the child vanishes, and nobody will admit she was ever on the plane.6/10 if you ignore the unrealistic plot and logical issues, this is thoroughly watchable Friday night fare which will have you genuinely trying to work out the central mystery.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJamie FoxxChristoph WaltzLeonardo DiCaprioWith the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.6/10 talky, self indulgent and obscenely overlong, it's a surprise Quentin Tarantino didn't release an alternative version which was just the actors talking his dialogue which he's so clearly in love while doing some of his trademark ultraviolence, but this Western, overrated as it is, still has its merits especially in its cast.
- DirectorMia Hansen-LøveStarsFélix de GivryPauline EtienneVincent MacaignePaul, a teenager in the underground scene of early-nineties Paris, forms a DJ collective with his friends and together they plunge into the nightlife of sex, drugs, and endless music.6/10 a self indulgent and overlong art-house film, but it's undeniably well made, well acted and it picks up in the second half.
- DirectorJohn SingletonStarsPaul WalkerTyrese GibsonCole HauserFormer cop Brian O'Conner is called upon to bust a dangerous criminal and he recruits the help of a former childhood friend and street racer who has a chance to redeem himself.6/10 a harmless if brainless action sequel which works very well on an entertainment level although it won't engage the brain in any way.
- DirectorJames MarshStarsEddie RedmayneFelicity JonesTom PriorStephen Hawking gets unprecedented success in the field of physics despite being diagnosed with motor neuron disease at the age of 21. He defeats awful odds as his first wife Jane aids him loyally.6/10 despite 2 excellent performances and some strong moments, this feels like a sappy TV movie. How did this make it into theatres?
- DirectorJonathan MostowStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerNick StahlKristanna LokenA machine from a post-apocalyptic future travels back in time to protect a man and a woman from an advanced robotic assassin to ensure they both survive a nuclear attack.6/10 basically a 2 hour chase sequence with little emotional depth, although at least it's better than Terminator Genesys.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsJeff GoldblumJulianne MoorePete PostlethwaiteA research team is sent to the Jurassic Park Site B island to study the dinosaurs there, while an InGen team approaches with another agenda.5/10 a load of set pieces and interesting tied together with a dull plot and a mediocre script. By the end, it's fallen apart.
- DirectorSean AndersStarsJason BatemanJason SudeikisCharlie DayDale, Kurt and Nick decide to start their own business but things don't go as planned because of a slick investor, prompting the trio to pull off a harebrained and misguided kidnapping scheme.5/10 this is pretty low and copies the original but it is funny and entertaining up to a point so it doesn't match the horrors of The Hangover Part II.
- DirectorJustin LinStarsLucas BlackZachery Ty BryanShad MossA teenager becomes a major competitor in the world of drift racing after moving in with his father in Tokyo to avoid a jail sentence in America.5/10 some spin off that everyone probably forgets about. Filmmakers must work out that you can't always distract audiences from a weak plot with endless car chases. It's got its highlights though.
- DirectorThor FreudenthalStarsLogan LermanAlexandra DaddarioBrandon T. JacksonIn order to restore their dying safe haven, the son of Poseidon and his friends embark on a quest to the Sea of Monsters, to find the mythical Golden Fleece, all the while trying to stop an ancient evil from rising.5/10 this one is stuck in the middle. It'll put fans of the excellent books off since it fails to capture their magic while casual viewers will see it as an unremarkable Harry Potter rip-off. It's got its moments and isn't as bad as I was expecting, but read the books instead.
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsSharlto CopleyDev PatelHugh JackmanIn the near future, crime is patrolled by a mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.5/10 some thought provoking themes and strong moments are crushed under the weight of some awful acting, confused script writing and the film's general lack of likability. Any film starring those awful rappers was always going to be a bit of struggle to sit through.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsChris HemsworthViola DavisTang WeiA furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.4/10 Michael Mann's style never fails to impress but it can't quite distract from the dramatically flat narrative or blank characters.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingKristin Scott ThomasVithaya PansringarmJulian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death.4/10 the visuals are stunning, but this pretentious and frustrating art house film is completely inferior to Drive in every way. Maybe it has a message but trying to work it out is like trying to play Chinese Whispers while wearing muffled headphones.
- DirectorJustin LinStarsVin DieselPaul WalkerMichelle RodriguezBrian O'Conner, back working for the FBI in Los Angeles, teams up with Dominic Toretto to bring down a heroin importer by infiltrating his operation.4/10 this dry, flat and lacklustre instalment is running on fumes and nearly everyone in the franchise isn't really trying here.
- DirectorDominique Othenin-GirardStarsDonald PleasenceDanielle HarrisEllie CornellOne year after the events of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), the Shape returns to Haddonfield once again in an attempt to kill his now-mute niece.4/10 one of those movies where it feels like you're watching it through a sheet of thick glass. It doesn't engage or involve its audience, and it's just another routine slasher flick with little personality.
- DirectorJohn LafiaStarsAlex VincentJenny AgutterGerrit GrahamWhile Andy's mother is admitted to a psychiatric hospital, the young boy is placed in foster care, and Chucky, determined to claim Andy's soul, is not far behind.4/10 a boring and predictable horror sequel lacking in scares and originality and barely even qualifies as a diverting time waster. Some good performances and a fun finale are the only things that make this worth bothering with.
- DirectorSpike LeeStarsJosh BrolinElizabeth OlsenSamuel L. JacksonObsessed with vengeance, a man sets out to find out why he was kidnapped and locked into solitary confinement for twenty years without reason.4/10 the original was a captivating, beautifully executed and emotionally devastating meditation on revenge. This, on the other hand, is a phony, ugly and blank imitation which deserved to bomb at the box office.
- DirectorTom HarperStarsHelen McCroryJeremy IrvinePhoebe Fox40 years after the first haunting at Eel Marsh House, a group of children evacuated from WWII London arrives, awakening the house's darkest inhabitant.4/10 yet another turgid horror sequel filled with jump scares and devoid of any actual suspense. It's got some good acting and cinematography, but it's laughably weak as a horror film.
- DirectorAlan TaylorStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerJason ClarkeEmilia ClarkeWhen John Connor, leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline.4/10 wow this was a stupid movie. Hollow and idiotic, this Terminator has clearly had its intelligence function switched off and this film feels like watching a robot thwacking its head against a wall for 2 hours.
- DirectorSam Taylor-JohnsonStarsDakota JohnsonJamie DornanJennifer EhleLiterature student Anastasia Steele's life changes forever when she meets handsome, yet tormented, billionaire Christian Grey.4/10 was anyone expecting this to any good? Not a complete disaster, but still lacking in emotion, a compelling story or any justification as to why it's 2 hours long.
- DirectorJohn LuessenhopStarsAlexandra DaddarioTania RaymondeScott EastwoodA young woman travels to Texas to collect an inheritance. Little does she know that an encounter with a chainsaw-wielding killer is part of the reward.4/10 a boring, nonsensical script and a total lack of atmosphere or scares make this stupendously silly horror sequel more baffling than an Agatha Christie locked room mystery and more annoying than a four hour compilation of Barney the Dinosaur.
- DirectorR.J. CutlerStarsChloë Grace MoretzMireille EnosJamie BlackleyLife changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined. The choice is hers if she can go on.3/10 this dreadful teen drama induced so many eyeball rolls it's a miracle they didn't get stuck. Watch The Fault in Our Stars instead.
- DirectorDavid KoeppStarsJohnny DeppGwyneth PaltrowEwan McGregorJuggling angry Russians, the British Mi5, and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part-time rogue Charlie Mortdecai races to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain a code that leads to lost gold.3/10 a strange, stupid, unfunny and overall fairly mortifying comedy that shows Johnny Depp finally hitting the bottom of the cinematic barrel and if anyone asks why you shouldn't go to the cinema in January, just show them this... thing.
- DirectorJason FriedbergAaron SeltzerStarsSean MaguireKevin SorboCarmen ElectraA spoof of 300 (2006) and many other movies, TV series/shows/commercials, video games and celebrities. - DirectorVic ArmstrongStarsNicolas CageLea ThompsonCassi ThomsonA small group of survivors is left behind after millions of people suddenly vanish and the world is plunged into chaos and destruction.1/10 a devastating Armageddon of cinematic wrongness that will have even the hardest critic cowering in a corner. The plot is rubbish, the dialogue is laughable, the acting is painful, the direction is atrocious and in general this is harder to watch than 12 Years a Slave. Or Schindler's List. Or... you get the idea.
- DirectorDennis DuganStarsAdam SandlerKevin JamesChris RockAfter moving his family back to his hometown to be with his friends and their kids, Lenny finds out that between old bullies, new bullies, schizo bus drivers, drunk cops on skis, and four hundred costumed party crashers sometimes crazy follows you.0/10 the jokes are less funny than a history lesson on World War II. The direction makes Michael Bay look competent. The plot... well there isn't one. You could at random go through the scripts of Pearl Harbour, the Twilight Saga, the Star Wars prequels, Jaws 4, The Wicker Man remake among other terrible movies, pick out phrases at random, mix them together and still come up with a better script than that of Grown Ups 2.
