Very memorable quotes (especially that one of Rudyard Kipling), Marvin Monroe it's in it telling about a secret psychological experiment he wants to do, Lisa tells something deep but at the same time has a superficial moment and Plato appears to tell “his philosophy”. Overall a good insight in the life of Abraham Simpson in that kind of asylum (that turn out to be almost a paradise after one special donnation)...

Director: David Silverman | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith

There is a lot of things that I truly liked about this episode, but the best of it all was the ending dialogue:
Homer: Save a guy's life, and what do you get? Nothing! Worse than nothing! Just a big, scary rock!
Bart: Hey, don't knock the head, man.
Marge: Homer, you don't do things like that to be rewarded! The moral of the story is that a good deed is its own reward!
Bart: But we got a reward, the head is cool!
Marge: Well, then maybe the moral is, no good deed goes unrewarded.
Homer: Wait a minute! If I hadn't written that nasty letter we wouldn't have gotten anything.
Marge: Mmmm... then I guess the moral is, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Lisa: Maybe there is no moral, Mom.
Homer: Exactly! It's just a bunch of stuff that happened.
Marge: But it certainly was a memorable few days.
Homer: Amen to that.

Director: Wesley Archer | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith
Votes: 3,804
An ironic parody & sutler reference to the principal weaknesses of the democracy, including funny gags of historical figures (Lincoln and Jefferson) and the “system of justice” (or “how to make a child keep his/her faith in democracy”).
A pretty radical discourse of Nelson Muntz; besides the award of essay for “USA A-OK” made by an immigrant who only wants to repeat the so well know “American dream” or, as other people would say, “YEAH! this is truly the land of opportunities!”. Another irony thing about it, because I already presumed that Truong van Dinh would be the winner.
And, last but not least, Homer as a truly reader! (he even turn off the TV, just a miracle)...
14.
The Simpsons (1989– )
Episode:
Like Father, Like Clown
(1991)
TV-14 | 30 min | Animation, Comedy
Bart and Lisa try to reunite Krusty the Clown with his father.
Directors: Brad Bird, Jeffrey Lynch | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith
Votes: 3,649
Although the main premise of the episode is to be a “family portrait”, there's very deep implications around the subject of religion, the solitude itself, and, of course, the father-son relationship.
E. Morin have talked enough about the “central” and “peripheral” problems & things that we usually have as the roots of our daily life, and most of the themes that this episodes explores are “central” ones. Therefore, it's not recommended to avoid them... And that's why this little “behind-the-smile-of-the-clown” story it's so perfect: because it shows the struggle and the resolution for a big problem, that it's more than a father-son relationship, it's about being tolerant and, as Bart says (Lisa help him to know that in the first place):
"At all times let a man be supple as a reed, and not rigid as a cedar."
15.

Director: Jeffrey Lynch | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith

It's always nice to know more about this couple. And this story in particular was very funny too!
16.
The Simpsons (1989– )
Episode:
Homer Alone
(1992)
TV-14 | 30 min | Animation, Comedy
While Marge spends a couple of days at Rancho Relaxo after she has a breakdown, Bart and Lisa stay with Patty and Selma, and Homer stays at home to take care of Maggie.
Director: Mark Kirkland | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith
Votes: 3,441
A very conscious episode about the mother's daily life. Even those womans that have works outside of her houses spent the majority of their time being worried about his family, and having all in order (the house itself, the things of the children, the husband, the to-do list that even Marge has in this story, etc...).
It's curious that the stress breakdown that Marge had at the beginning of the episode it's not more common. Or maybe it's, but, at least, it doesn't have enough attention of the media (it's like the indifference of Kent Brockman about the dangerous situation of Bart in “Radio Bart”, that actually preferred to stay all night worried and talking around the Lincoln squirrel).
17.
The Simpsons (1989– )
Episode:
Colonel Homer
(1992)
TV-14 | 30 min | Animation, Comedy
Homer becomes the manager of a beautiful young country singer and finds himself almost attracted to her, sparking Marge's jealousy.
Director: Mark Kirkland | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith
Votes: 3,597
This was just Homer being a real man!
He didn't take advantage even when he was tempted, and he was always respectful to the feelings and thoughts of both womans: Lurleen and Marge. He proved in this little story that he's more than just an over-weight man addicted to beer: he can actually cares about someone else.
Plus: the songs were fantastic & this was written by Matt Groening!
18.
The Simpsons (1989– )
Episode:
A Streetcar Named Marge
(1992)
TV-14 | 30 min | Animation, Comedy
Marge stars in a musical adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire, but is angry with Homer's lack of interest; Maggie squares off with her strict new daycare owner.
Director: Rich Moore | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith
Votes: 3,757
Loved the subtle references to Ayn Rand and Alfred Hitchcock! This story also made me think in “All About My Mother” (1999), another tribute to the play of Williams...
19.
The Simpsons (1989– )
Episode:
Homer the Heretic
(1992)
TV-14 | 30 min | Animation, Comedy
After attributing a relaxing Sunday to his skipping church, Homer vows to never attend service again, and forms his own religion to justify his behavior.
Director: Jim Reardon | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith
Votes: 5,181
The whole concept of not going to the church just to prove that you believe in God is what makes this episode so special. It's a shame that the ending of it is so "political correct" with Christianity (that's why I gave it 7/10 and not 10/10), but all the rest of it (even what God himself says) is just perfect...
20.
The Simpsons (1989– )
Episode:
Lisa the Beauty Queen
(1992)
TV-14 | 30 min | Animation, Comedy
Homer enters Lisa in the Little Miss Springfield pageant to build her self-esteem.
Director: Mark Kirkland | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith
Votes: 3,427
I just gonna said that, after seeing this, “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006) doesn't look so original and good. Maybe they should called it “Little Miss Springfield” to be more honest with their influences...
21.
The Simpsons (1989– )
Episode:
Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie
(1992)
TV-14 | 30 min | Animation, Comedy
With Bart continually getting in trouble, Homer bans him from seeing the new Itchy & Scratchy movie.
Director: Rich Moore | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith
Votes: 3,663
Maybe it doesn't have a complex plot, but that ending was great! The relationship between Bart and Homer really show something more deep than the usual fight, something like they are, more or less, father & son after all, and not only two characters that haven't so much to related with the other...
22.
