But when father alcohol problem comes to show, old secrets are revealed, and it all evolves into a Chritmas tragedy.18.12. DVD on TV. First time.
Probably one of the most honest Christmas movies ever made, showcasing the dark cloud alcohol lays over many Christmas celebrations. The dogme style and setting of a large family gathering obviously brings Thomas Vinterberg's «Festen» to mind, but the characters and storylines are sufficiently different for the films not to feel the same, and I think the stress of Christmas and the claustrophobic cabin setting of «Når nettene blir lange» actually suits the dogme style even better than «Festen». As a Christmas movie, it won't give you any Hollywood-y feels, but its unflinching depiction of Christmas at its darkest is well worth experiencing, and lighter moments like dancing around the Christmas tree and getting a visit from Santa are nostalgic and actually Christmas-y for a Norwegian like me. 8/10 - DirectorChristian CarionStarsDiane KrugerBenno FürmannGuillaume CanetIn December 1914, an unofficial Christmas truce on the Western Front allows soldiers from opposing sides of the First World War to gain insight into each other's way of life.17.12. How did this cost so much? It looks so cheap! I guess everything went to the stars, who really should pay Netflix some back, because they're not bringing their A-game, or even their B-game. And the script is so terrible! 3/10 - DirectorBerit NesheimStarsMarie TheisenHildegun RiiseBjørn SundquistThe Other Side of Sunday criticizes the small, and often tight church community. We follow the Preachers Daughter; Maria, in her journey to liberate herself from the stiff church community and her strict religious father.09.11. Cinemateket i Oslo, Lillebil. First time. * Film history lecture before the screening
While some parts have not aged as well as others, for the most part, "Søndagsengler" impressed me. From the opening scene where Maria is internally assessing the bottoms and breasts of all the other women in church, to the various challenges she faces in her pubescent awakening, especially the ones where she has to go against her father, the priest, it impressed me with its honestness about youth, sex and religion. The story is good, the actors are fine, and apart from the odd moment here and there that has not aged well, or that is simply corny seen with modern eyes, it's a fine film, worthy of its Oscar nomination. 7/10 - DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.06.11. The cinematics won't blow you away, but it's got what it takes to tell an important and very human story, and it uses music in a moving way. I think this film will stay with me, and hopefully inspire me to seek out more African cinema. 7/10 - DirectorShawn LevyStarsRyan ReynoldsJodie ComerTaika WaititiWhen Guy, a bank teller, learns that he is a non-player character in a bloodthirsty, open-world video game, he goes on to become the hero of the story and takes the responsibility of saving the world.05.11. Disney Plus on TV. First time.
Cute. Feels like a Jim Carrey movie (and no, not just "The Truman Show"). The story is simple, the plot holes abundant (if you stop to think about them), but it all flows along nicely, and it has a lot of nice messages, which I often mind, when hit over the head with them, but not in a kids film like this. 6/10 - DirectorWes AndersonStarsBenicio Del ToroAdrien BrodyTilda SwintonA love letter to journalists set in an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional twentieth century French city that brings to life a collection of stories published in "The French Dispatch Magazine".03.11. Vega scene, Sal 1. First time.
An uneven film that, on first viewing at least, seems to lack Anderson's usual finesse. A lot of it feels chaotic and unrythmic, and it's not quite what you've come to expect from Anderson (which of course should be a good thing, as I remember my initial complaint about "Grand Budapest Hotel" was that it was too much like Wes Anderson, but I suppose there could be a middle ground somewhere in between).
A lot of the story, especially in the middle section about the student uprising, moves too quickly at many points, and when the story is struggling to engage to begin with, I feel like this disconnected me quite a bit. There was a lot to like in every section of the film, and I actually loved the last part with Jeffrey Wright (doing his most Jeffrey Wright voice) and of course Edward Norton (who is a singular delight in every Wes Anderson role he's had, and who I desperately want to do many more film roles than he has in recent years again).
Yet, while there were what I perceived as imperfections in the different sections of the film, I think my main problem was with the overarching "narrative". The newspaper setting didn't quite work for me, as while the first short bit with Owen Wilson was quite literary and worked as a visual representation of a newspaper column, I think the frameworks within the framework threw me off. Tilda Swinton's lecture on the painter (which was overlong and unfunny) was kind of competing with the supposed article that we were meant to be "reading", at least when you realise she is the one writing the article as well. Frances McDormand writing her piece within the piece worked much better, and Jeffrey Wright reciting his article at the talkshow worked very well (even if it didn't really make sense as a part of the newspaper), probably because it brought back the literary feel from the opening column, and also (I'll admit) because it was the most classic Wes Anderson of the sections.
The premise of "The French Dispatch" hasn't had me brimming with anticipation in the years we've been waiting for it, because I was skeptical of what kind of stories it would feature, and now that I've seen it I feel my worst fears about it came true. All the stories have some merit, but they're not essential, and none of them feel like they're the only stories Anderson could have gone with, but I suppose that gives it a realistic touch, as they're supposed to just coincidentally be the stories that happened to make up the final issue of a publication. However, this is fiction (and very much so), so you don't have to settle for something less than great. (Also, a final note on the selection of stories; Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't all these stories have a sixties feel to them, while the final publication supposedly came out in 1975? I may be mixing up my impressions, but that seems odd to me now that I think of it. I suppose they might all be retrospects, but still.)
In closing, "The French Dispatch" is an uneven work on first viewing, that I'm sure I'll experience very differently when I see it again in the future, and only time will tell if I like it better or worse when I see it for a second time. I'll definitely be hitting the pause button quite a few times when watching at home, to catch all those lightning fast images that flash by without giving you time to really appreciate them. 6/10 - DirectorAndrew StantonStarsBen BurttElissa KnightJeff GarlinIn the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.03.11. I didn't really see any of what the big words and sentiments used in the descriptions said about this film in the actual film itself. In a "love letter" to cinema I would expect the characters to love cinema, but apart from the old man crying at the end, and maybe the kid, there doesn't seem to be anyone at the theatre who actually wants to watch the film that's showing. And is the cinema closing as the descriptions say, or do they just close up for the night in the end? That's what it looks like, and if so, I guess this is just a lazy tuesday at an old theatre, and not the poignant event it was hyped up to be. This film might be a love letter to supressed homosexuals looking for a hook-up, or lonely women working dead-end jobs, but a love letter to cinema it is not. Neither the characters nor the filmmakers seem to have any affection for the film that's showing or the moviehouse itself, so while this film was a fairly enjoyable experience, it was a very bad case of false advertising. 5.5/10 - DirectorJim SharmanStarsTim CurrySusan SarandonBarry BostwickA newly-engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must seek shelter at the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-n-Furter.30.10. His peace is short-lived when Felix Leiter, an old friend from the CIA, turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.13.10. Vika kino, Sal 1. First time.
This was a great cinema experience! It was thrilling, fun and even emotional - and you really don't expect the latter from a Bond film. Most everything in the film worked, and it had a lot of great moments. Daniel Craig really carries the film, apart from that sequence when Ana de Armas steals the show, and it felt like a great finale, not only to Craig's Bond, but the entire franchise, so I don't see how "James Bond will return" after this one. (After all, they've been calling him a dinosaur since the 90s, so it feels weird to continue the series into the future. But that's a problem for Future Screenwriter Guy and Producer Guy, so I won't worry now.) The most negative thing I have to say about the film is that it's a little too long and that the villain and new 007 were underdeveloped, but I didn't really mind that or any of the small imperfections throughout, because the overall experience was so good. 7.5/10 - DirectorTerry GilliamTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseEric IdleKing Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table embark on a surreal, low-budget search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles.06./11.10. Ringen kino, Sal 5. First time.
Much to laugh about, and much to cry about. This film is superbly written, acted, shot, directed and art directed. It balances humour and sadness in a perfect composition and makes you care for all its characters. It's honest and real, and very, very good. All the best films are Norwegian this year! 10/10 - DirectorJoachim TrierStarsRenate ReinsveAnders Danielsen LieHerbert NordrumThe chronicles of four years in the life of Julie, a young woman who navigates the troubled waters of her love life and struggles to find her career path, leading her to take a realistic look at who she really is.03.10. Cinemateket i Oslo, Tancred. First time. *Troll i eske
"Reprise 2: Try Harder" - The film starts out a little flat, and the script gives off the sense get that Trier and Vogt have grown a little middle-aged since "Reprise", but after the prologue and the first chapter, it begins picking up the pace and turns into a rather nice film, with some funny, some tender and some emotional moments. The film is uneven, and some chapters are better than others, but it's a good experience as a whole that stayed with me afterwards, and the leading trio give wonderful performances. 7.5/10 - DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.03.10. This was not the detective film I was hoping for from the title, and I can't say I appreciated the ham-handed social morality tale that it turned out to be either. It's a shame that this is one of the only black & white films provided by Netflix in Norway at the moment, as I imagine it will scare a lot of people off from watching old films again any time soon, causing them to miss out on all the great classics out there... 4/10 - DirectorRobert GreenwaldStarsOlivia Newton-JohnGene KellyMichael BeckA struggling artist living in Los Angeles meets a girl who may hold the key to his happiness.26.09. Cinemateket i Oslo, Lillebil. First time.
I first became aware of this film's existence through a Youtube video that included one musical for every letter of the alphabet, and the short clip that was in the video made me a little intrigued about this curious film. When I saw that Cinemateket i Oslo had included it in their September program, I had to be there, and it was a fun experience to watch. It's bad in so many ways: The script is awful, the lead actor is completely uncharismatic and talentless, there doesn't seem to have been a choreographer working on the film, and the cinematography is very uninspired, bland and boring. But, this definitely falls into the "so-bad-it's-good" category, so I had a lot of fun watching it. It was also sweet seeing Gene Kelly in this older role, and his charm and charisma is the only reason I'm giving this two stars and not just one. 2/10 - DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. - DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsKenneth BranaghJudi DenchIan McKellenA look at the final days in the life of renowned playwright William Shakespeare.22.09. Netflix on TV. First time.
A lot of beautiful imagery - especially the opening shots - are the highlights of an ok film, that examines Shakespeare in a couple of interesting ways. It's completely fine, but I am very tired of these biopics that try to encompass everything about the life of someone great by just focusing on their final days. 6/10 - DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsTimothée ChalametRebecca FergusonZendayaA noble family becomes embroiled in a war for control over the galaxy's most valuable asset while its heir becomes troubled by visions of a dark future.21.09. Colosseum kino, Sal 1. First time.
I'm intrigued, but I need to watch "Part 2" before passing final judgement, because this is very much "Part 1". It feels like I've watched the first three episodes of a series - enough to make me want to see more, but not enough to make me fully invested. There's not a lot to the characters in this film, so I hope they evolve and get fleshed out in the second part. I hope there's more meaningful action too, because looking back at it, it feels more like I watched a very long prologue than an actual, complete film. 6.5/10 - DirectorLukas DhontStarsVictor PolsterArieh WorthalterOliver BodartA promising teenage dancer enrolls at a prestigious ballet school while grappling with her gender dysphoria.20.09. Blu-ray on TV. First time.
It might have been the wrong film to watch on a sick day, but I think I might have found it a bit slow and uneventful on a normal day as well. I suppose that might have contributed to understanding the impatience Lara feels at the pace of the process, but I think there could have been more to it. The moments that linger with you are very effective, both cinematically and acting-wise, and I really like how intuitively we experience Lara's struggle, but I felt like there could have been something more to it. 6/10 - DirectorRoger AllersRob MinkoffStarsMatthew BroderickJeremy IronsJames Earl JonesLion prince Simba and his father are targeted by his bitter uncle, who wants to ascend the throne himself.19.09. I really enjoyed this! The mood, the mystique, the visuals and the overall fairytale-ness of the whole film. It was something else that really appealed to me! 9/10 - DirectorMario RoncoroniStarsValeria CretiGiovanni SpanoCristina RuspoliSkypirate Filibus commits robberies from her airship, while a dedicated detective attempts to put a stop to it.10.09. Cinemateket i Oslo, Tancred. First time. *Oslo Stumfilmfestival with live piano and percussion, and intro/lecture before the film
When I hear of a film with such an amazing description as "Filibus", I tend to get apprehensive, as I never know if what's actually in the film is going to live up to what was described, but I needn't have worried about "Filibus". It's a fun adventure story, and all its clever antics hold up very well today, making for an enjoyable evening of silent cinema. Cinemateket i Oslo's regular pianist, Kjetil Schjander Luhr, accompanied the film brilliantly (as always) with a bigger rig than this usual piano, and with the help of another musician on percussion. 7.5/10 - DirectorYngvild Sve FlikkeStarsInga Ibsdotter LilleaasHenriette SteenstrupAnne Krigsvoll3 women seeks identity and happiness. Watching this after Sve Flikke's sophomore feature, "Ninjababy", made me see it brimming with promises of good things to come, as you see the seeds of a lot of things she perfected in her second film here, but this has a lot of merit on its own, and the characters stayed with me in the days after watching it. I look forwards to seeing Yngvild Sve Flikke's next film, as I can now call myself a fan! 7/10 - DirectorKevin MacdonaldStarsTahar RahimNouhe Hamady BariSaadna HamoudMohamedou Ould Slahi fights for freedom after being detained and imprisoned without charge by the U.S. Government for years.07.09. Eskil Vogt's second X-Men film as writer after 2017's "Thelma" falls quite a ways into the "style over substance" category. It doesn't really explore it's subject matter to any greater lengths than any previous evil kids films I have seen, and has a general lack of proper characters, which became especially disappointing to me as I had rewatched his debut film as writer, "Reprise", the day before. 6.5/10 - DirectorJoachim TrierStarsAnders Danielsen LieEspen Klouman HøinerViktoria WingeFueled by literary aspirations and youthful exuberance, two competitive friends endure the pangs of love, depression, and burgeoning careers.30.08. The first half of this film is really cannibalized by the second part. I had seen this once before, but I couldn't remember anything from the first story, even though it's quite fascinating and has a lot of cool visuals. The story of 663 and Faye is just so much more compelling that it drives the first part from my mind. 7.5/10 - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsLaurence OlivierJoan FontaineGeorge SandersA self-conscious woman juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat's wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife's spectral presence.04.08. Elle Fanning gives a good performance, and most of the funny moments in the film come from her, and Chalamet does a fairly decent job as well, which is impressive with such a stilted script. Selena Gomez is terrible, however, and the film as a whole is typical last decade Allen. Trivial and forgettable. You can't really tell that the legendary Vittorio Storaro was the cinematographer, as most of the film has a very bland look, but the rain on the windscreen looks really good and has a sort of unique quality that I appreciated. 5.5/10 - DirectorStian KristiansenStarsRolf Kristian LarsenArthur BerningIda Elise BrochA teenage boy loses his footing when he finds himself drawn to the new boy in class.27.07. As a film it is a little uneven and fast paced at times, but as it progresses including more and more situations and topics, you realise that fast pace is necessary for the film to be able to include all it wants to, because it has a lot to say and will leave you thinking and processing a good while afterwards. 7.5/10 - DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleMichael CaineKen WatanabeAfter witnessing his parents' death, Bruce learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. This is the first time I've watched this immediately back to back with "Part 1", and I've got to say it suited it. It's an immense experience taking in the whole odyssey over the span of one evening, but a good one. It was a nice rewatch, and felt a bit special since it's almost ten years to the day since it first came out. I felt a lot more throughout the two films than I think I've ever did before, but that #%@ ending ruins it every time. The final duel between Harry and Voldemort is so weird and unimpactful and it's such a shame. 6.5/10 - DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintAs Harry, Ron and Hermione race against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes, they uncover the existence of the three most powerful objects in the wizarding world: the Deathly Hallows.10.07. We needed another Owen Wilson fix after seeing him effortlessly carrying "Loki" entirely on his own back, and landed on "The Big Year", which I've always had sort of a good feeling about since it came out. It's a sweet and funny film, and I think the thing that makes it work so well, is that it takes birding seriously. It questions the extremes its characters go to in order to be the best birder, but it never questions or makes fun of the hobby itself, which would be typical for a Hollywood film about a niche activity like this, and that is a big strength! 6.5/10 - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.28.06. This was so sweet! John Magaro, who was a completely fresh face to me, was so sweet and endearing as Cookie, and I could watch him talk to that cow for ages. Cookie and King-Lu were such a cute duo, and this film was so sweet and pleasant and I loved it. Biopic done right! I had a very good feeling about this film going in, but you never know with biographical films, even when they're not made in Hollywood. This was a perfect example of the genre for me, though. Tove's character is wonderfully written and acted, and I really enjoyed her journey. I appreciated the way the Moomins were present throughout the film, yet not being allowed to the forefront for a long time by Tove's artistic ambitions. I would have loved a little bit more about the creation of the Moomin stories, as I think that could have worked well with the story of the film, but I was very happy about what we got, as it's one of the best films I've seen this year. 9/10 - DirectorChloé ZhaoStarsFrances McDormandDavid StrathairnLinda MayA woman in her sixties, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad.06.06. It's good, but think I would have enjoyed an actual documentary about nomads more. There's nothing in the film you couldn't have gotten in an actual documentary, and seeing a journey like Fern's would have made more impact in a docu, as I actually felt there wasn't quite enough to it for a fiction film. 6.5/10 - DirectorMike NicholsStarsDustin HoffmanAnne BancroftKatharine RossA disillusioned college graduate finds himself torn between his older lover and her daughter.05.06. Gorgeous and sensitive film about moose hunters. It was very interesting to see the communal experience the yearly moose hunt seems to be in this little town (bordering on the cult-ish when they all convene in the church), and hear the different reflections of the people involved. The film is beautifully shot, really bringing out the stunning landscape it takes place in, and the music is sublime. 9/10 - DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.31.05.
