Films That Made 50% of Top-10 Lists, 1928-1963
Based on the annual Film Daily poll, excluding 1950 for which no data is at present available at criticstop10.com. The notes give the percentage followed by the rank within its year. I'll be adding Oscar performance data at some point.
You'll scroll through this list and look in vain for It's a Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, North by Northwest, The Great Dictator, Lawrence of Arabia, Some Like it Hot, To Kill a Mockingbird, or Double Indemnity.
But at least those films managed to get at least 25% of the critics onboard. Among the films that couldn't are Psycho, Modern Times, Vertigo, Paths of Glory, The Maltese Falcon, The Searchers, King Kong, Strangers on a Train, To Be or Not to Be, Rio Bravo, The Big Sleep, the Birds, His Girl Friday, and Trouble in Paradise.
But wait, there's more. Touch of Evil, The Night of the Hunter, Duck Soup, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Bringing Up Baby, Sweet Smell of Success, and Out of the Past head the list of the films that got no apparent critical support at all.
Note that it was much easier in those days than now to get top-10 support from 50% of the critics. There are 3.7 of these films per year on this list, with no trend of decline. But there were 2.9 in the 1990's and 1.5 in this century. The last figure is a decline of 61% from the Hollywood era.
(Comparing this century to this list, films making 40% of lists have declined 48% from 6.9 per year to 3.6, films making 30% are down 38% from 9.9 to 6.2, and those making 20% are down 16% from 14.7 to 12.4. In contrast, those making 10% of lists have actually increased by a small but highly significant 9%, from 25.6 to 27.9.
At some point I'll compile the percentage of all top-10 mentions that went to films that didn't make the year's top 50 films, but it's clear that it has gone up hugely. Films today are much more diverse than they used to be. It's not just that Avengers: Endgame and The Turin Horse (whose most memorable scene involves two people eating one potato) have nothing in common; neither resembles Casablanca in the least.)
