- DirectorRodrigo GarcíaStarsAnne HathawayPatrick WilsonDavid MorseA grief counselor working with a group of plane-crash survivors finds herself at the root of a mystery when her clients begin to disappear.I was intrigued enough by the premise of this film to ignore its dismal rating, and found myself liking it and creeped out by it at points. A young Anne Hathaway plays Claire, a therapist who works with survivors of trauma and catastrophes. A plane has just crashed near the city, and Claire is assigned to work with the few passengers who survived, including Eric (Patrick Wilson), a handsome man who draws her into a relationship. As group counselling sessions move forward, the passengers who make up the group start to disappear one by one, after being followed by people representing the airline. Lots of chills and a good plot made this a nice film to start off the year.
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsMichael FassbenderRebecca FergusonCharlotte GainsbourgDetective Harry Hole investigates the disappearance of a woman whose scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman. Not a great film: I gave it four stars and added an extra star for Michael Fassbender making a good Harry, and for the Norwegian scenery. As a screen adaption of a novel by one of my favourite writers, it hits the major notes without ever satisfying. Some people, some plot points were raised in seemingly pointless fashion, or were red herrings badly directed and badly scripted. I think I followed the film as well as I did because I've read the book more than once; general theatre audiences were probably mystified.
- DirectorWash WestmorelandStarsAlicia VikanderKiki SukezaneKenichi MasudaAn enigmatic translator with a dark past is brought in for questioning after an ex-pat friend, who came between her and her photographer boyfriend, ends up missing and presumed dead. This was an extremely weird movie, and I was left deeply unsatisfied. Only because of its unusual and unpredictable plot did I keep watching, hoping for a redemptive ending that never occurred. Alicia Vikander plays Lucy Fry, a Swedish translator working in Japan. She meets a Japanese photographer and enters into a relationship with him. Lucy meets a young American woman who starts a relationship with her boyfriend; when Lucy is found dead, it is Lily whom the police question and suspect of her murder. I liked the Japanese setting, and the elements of it - the tatami mats and the noodle houses, etc. For the most part, though, I feel like I wasted my time on this film.
Quite a lot of Japanese with English subtitles. - DirectorGarth DavisStarsDev PatelNicole KidmanRooney MaraA five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.Lion is the true story of Saroo, who got lost at age five in western India, fell asleep in a train, and ended up nearly 2000 miles away in Kolkata. Adopted by an Australian couple, Saroo was raised in Tasmania and educated in Melbourne. Despite his happy upbringing and his potential, feelings of deep guilt led him to search for his mother and family, with few memories and a huge sub-continent to investigate. Dev Patel was powerful as the grown-up Saroo, and little Sunny Pawar is the cutest kid I've ever seen, really. This was a hard film to watch, with family separations and grief as main themes of the movie. Still, it was excellent. I was engrossed by how fully the movie explored Saroo's accidental travels and Saroo's dangerous mis-steps amongst people capable of misusing lost children.
- DirectorNeil JordanStarsIsabelle HuppertChloë Grace MoretzMaika MonroeA young woman befriends a lonely widow who's harboring a dark and deadly agenda toward her.It all starts when Frances (Chloe Grace Moretz) finds a handbag on the seat of a New York subway and returns it to the owner, Greta, a French woman in late middle age who confesses to being lonely. The two strike up an unlikely friendship, which all ends when Frances finds the handbag. There's a whole cupboard of them, all of them lures baited to bring unwitting strangers into Greta's web. Frances ends the friendship; will Greta permit her to exit so suddenly from her life? I enjoyed this unnerving film, which was replete with atmosphere and psychopathy.
- DirectorDee ReesStarsAnne HathawayBen AffleckRosie PerezA veteran D.C. journalist loses the thread of her own narrative when a guilt-propelled errand for her father thrusts her from byline to unwitting subject in the very story she's trying to break. Adapted from Joan Didion's namesake novel.Elena (Anne Hathaway) is a seasoned journalist, following up leads on international stories, the latest of which is CIA-initiated drug/weapon trades in Central America. It's a subject close to home, as Elena's dad, Dick (Willem Dafoe) is a small-time gun runner operating out of Miami. There are a lot of incomprehensible twists and turns, and lots of action and shootings and death. I enjoyed the characters, particularly lovely to see Willem Dafoe, aging but still strikingly good-looking. Not a great film, and I was never sure who was on what side of anything, but it was relaxing and easy-to-watch, which is what I needed last evening.
- DirectorAtom EgoyanStarsRyan ReynoldsScott SpeedmanRosario DawsonEight years after the disappearance of Cassandra, some disturbing incidents seem to indicate that she's still alive. Police, parents and Cassandra herself, will try to unravel the mystery of her disappearance.Such a poor film that even a week after seeing it, I can barely remember it. Ryan Reynolds is on the hunt for his daughter, Cassandra, who has been missing for years. He is the one who has had to shoulder the blame of his family and the police force. I thought that the plot of the movie was pretty goofy, but I always enjoy Ryan Reynolds, and I liked seeing a film made in Ontario, where some of the locations are familiar to me.
- DirectorJohn MaddenStarsJudi DenchBilly ConnollyGeoffrey PalmerWhen Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert dies, she finds solace in her trusted servant, Mr. John Brown, but their relationship also brings scandal and turmoil.I liked this film as I'm a fan of Billy Connolly. The story interested me as well. Queen Victoria's (Judi Dench) courtiers feel the need to perk up their grieving queen, and call in outspoken Scottish gamekeeper John Brown to do so. He is wildly successful, and brightens up her life considerably. Queen Victoria's friendship with John Brown was a scandal in the eyes of the public. It has never been disproven that Victoria may have had an affair with him, and what does it matter, I think? She was a widow, and undoubtedly missing the warmth of her late husband. The film had beautiful scenery, nice camera work, and a very good story.
- DirectorLiz GarbusStarsAmy RyanThomasin McKenzieGabriel ByrneWhen Mari Gilbert's daughter disappears, police inaction drives her own investigation into the gated Long Island community where Shannan was last seen. Her search brings attention to over a dozen murdered sex workers.Scattered movie based on a true story about a woman's search for her missing daughter, a prostitue. Her hunt for her daughter takes her into a gated community on Long Island, and quite accidentally, she stumbles onto the deaths of many other sex workers. The film was not fulfilling, the acting weak, the plot dismal.
- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsVicky KriepsDaniel Day-LewisLesley ManvilleSet in 1950s London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.A very strange movie, rumoured to be Daniel Day-Lewis' last. The film focuses on a high-fashion designer, Reynolds Woodcock, and his muse, Alma, played by Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps. Day-Lewis plays with skill a selfish, unbending man, and Alma's attempts to make him more manageable are deadly. Weird film, but engrossing and well-made.
- DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsDavid Alan BascheOlivia ThirlbyLiza Colón-ZayasA real-time account of the events on United Flight 93, one of the planes hijacked on September 11th, 2001 that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania when passengers foiled the terrorist plot.Mediocre movie about an inspiring event. On 9/11, shortly after the World Trade Centers tragedies, another plane, United 93, is hijacked; its probable destination the US Capitol Building in Washington DC. Word gets through to the passengers about the WTC, and they band together to attack the terrorists and keep the plane from its intended impact. Their act of self-sacrifice is really moving, but the whole film felt rushed and was as unfulfilling as the courage of the passengers was astonishing.
- DirectorZach LipovskyAdam B. SteinStarsEmile HirschBruce DernGrace ParkA bold girl discovers a bizarre, threatening, and mysterious new world beyond her front door after she escapes her father's protective and paranoid control.Very capable science-fiction/dystopian film about a society where people with special abilities are either killed or made into weapons for the state. Emile Hirsch plays Chloe's father - paranoid and ultra-controlling. He is very effective and abusive in a way that doesn't involve his fists. For much of the movie he seems like a deluded madman, and I was frightened of him. Bruce Dern plays the ice cream man, who comes along in his musical truck every day. He's scary and seems insane. I was pleased with the feminist slant that the director took, and thought it a good film, although too creepy and violent for my taste.
- DirectorLynne RamsayStarsTilda SwintonJohn C. ReillyEzra MillerKevin's mother struggles to love her strange child despite the increasingly dangerous things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.I shouldn't have watched this film. It was far too dark, much too hopeless, and deeply depressing. The movie is based on an excellent novel by Lionel Shriver, and is about a mother's (Tilda Swinton's) relationship with her possibly evil and certainly terribly misguided son. The movie is violent, chaotic, and nightmarish and although it is certainly well done, it's not for anyone with emotional or mental health issues.
- DirectorTerence DaviesStarsRachel WeiszTom HiddlestonAnn MitchellThe wife of a British Judge is caught in a self-destructive love affair with a Royal Air Force pilot.Dreadful and depressing film that focused on the end of a tempestuous extra-marital affair. I watched the film as Rachel Weisz is my favourite actress; in this film she played Hester, who is married to a well-respected and much older judge (Simon Russell Beale), whom she leaves for a young fighter pilot, played by Tom Hiddleston. Simon Russell Beale was perfect in his role. I really disliked the characters that Weisz and Hiddleston played - a very destructive relationship makes both of them unpleasant people, self-pitying and full of dislike for each other even though they profess love. I've come away from this film feeling gloomy, like one does after days of rain. Don't watch unless you want to feel overwrought and blue.
- DirectorSimon FellowsStarsAndrew ScottBronagh WaughDenise GoughWhen a young boy goes missing in a sleepy backwoods town, a local sanitation truck driver, Donald, plays detective, embarking on a precarious and obsessive investigation.Note: This film has two titles, A Dark Place, and Steel Country.
In a small town a young boy goes missing and is found drowned in the river. The death is listed as an accident, but Donny Devlin, an autistic sanitation worker believes that the boy was killed, and starts a poorly-planned investigation that brings about death threats and beatings from the locals. Andrew Scott plays Donny Devlin and is brilliant, as he always is. It was also nice to see Bronagh Waugh (The Fall) as the supporting actor, who is Donny's friend and co-worker. I was agitated for most of the film as it was nerve-wracking and because I really got attached to Donny. - DirectorJ. David MilesStarsLisa BaerDanny BixlerDesta BixlerThe discovery of the mutilated body of a mentally challenged young mother begins a journey into madness that is so unbelievable the mastermind behind the crime ultimately got away with murder. This wasn't a good documentary and I'm still somewhat confused by the chain of events. That being said, what I heard about this incredibly abusive family in Ohio is the worst thing I've ever heard of. I don't understand why family, neighbours, police, social services, somebody didn't do anything to relieve the torment of Vera Jo's short life. Even though the documentary was unsatisfying, I will be reading what I can about the case to see if I can make heads or tails about this dreadful series of crimes committed by people who seem to have no conscience and no mercy.
- DirectorAng LeeStarsEmma ThompsonKate WinsletJames FleetRich Mr. Dashwood dies, leaving his second wife and her three daughters poor by the rules of inheritance. The two eldest daughters are the title opposites.I watched this beautiful adaptation of the Jane Austen novel for the millionth time today. Emma Thompson wrote such a lovely screenplay for it; I've always though that Jane herself would approve it. The cast is delightful. I always forget to ensure that I have tissues at hand for crying at all the sad bits and all the happy ones. I have reviewed this film countless times so I won't do it again, except to say that this is the perfect film for anyone who loves romance and period pieces as much as I do. I do miss Alan Rickman. His portrayal of Colonel Brandon was so understated, but when he smiled, his eyes lit with a fire that would make anybody swoon.
- DirectorRobert AltmanStarsMaggie SmithRyan PhillippeMichael GambonSet in the 1930s, a group of pretentious rich and famous get together for a weekend of relaxation at a hunting resort. But when a murder occurs, each one of these interesting characters becomes a suspect.I've heard so many good things about this movie, but I was distinctly underwhelmed. I found that the characters were introduced so quickly that except in a few cases I was unable to keep track of them. Even the clothing was too like one another's, especially (of course) the outfits that the servants wore. I wonder, in retrospect, if the point in dressing the upstairs characters so much alike was making a point that being the rich folk in some ways is being a servant, just to different masters. I loved the huge variety of top-notch actors in this period piece. There was Maggie Smith, and Derek Jacobi, Emily Watson, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Fry, and many others. I like ensemble casts. Overall, though, the film fell flat for me.
- DirectorDaniel CalparsoroStarsBelén RuedaJavier ReyAura GarridoA cop returns to the job. A serial killer too returns to the job. This film was awful. It had an interesting premise: a man has been in jail for twenty years for committing serial murders in a uniquely ritualistic manner. He is still in prison when the murders start again. The movie was confusing, bizarre, almost horrific in some scenes; the plot didn't hang together and the situations were thoroughly unlikely. Even some of the basics were wrong: in the movie, people who had been poisoned with yew leaves died instantly whereas it actually takes approximately an hour for the first symptoms of yew poisoning to appear. I think if you're using something as a plot point you should research the details.
Although available in English, I chose to watch with the original Spanish vocals and English subtitles. - DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future. This was a lovely musical. Although I can't imagine it ever topping the great musicals of yesteryear, it was an endearing film with good tunes, excellent set design, and a tale well told. Emma Stone has a beautiful singing voice and dances with all the grace of a ballerina. Ryan Gosling's singing was weak, but he learned how to play the piano for the role and I was in awe of his nimble-fingered jazz piano skills.
- DirectorJon M. ChuStarsConstance WuHenry GoldingMichelle YeohThis contemporary romantic comedy based on a global bestseller follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu to Singapore to meet her boyfriend's family.A Chinese-born Londoner goes, with her boyfriend, to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. He's never let on to her that he's rich - crazy rich - the sort of rich where conspicious consumption goes over the top. The boyfriend's family doesn't like her - will true love beat out parental restrictions? Easy, relaxing, amusing film.
- DirectorStephen FrearsStarsMeryl StreepHugh GrantSimon HelbergThe story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice.I have mised feelings about this film, in which Meryl Streep plays Florence Foster Jenkins, a woman with the world's biggest heart and worst voice, whose dream is to perform at Carnegie Hall. Her husband, played by Hugh Grant, is supportive of her goals but is careful only to invite the right people to her performances, and who keeps a firm hand on what the press is allowed to write about her. I enjoyed the sweetness of the relationship between them. Mrs. Jenkins' accompanist, played by Simon Helberg, was wooden. I blame the script more than I do bad acting, as the writers made him a one-sided character with very little to do except play the piano and smile. Not a great film, but the costuming was amazing, and it wasn't egregious, just bad.
- DirectorGary RossStarsSandra BullockCate BlanchettAnne HathawayDebbie Ocean gathers an all-female crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City's annual Met Gala. This film was a lot of fun. The late Danny Ocean's sister (Sandra Bullock), just released from prison, plots the biggest jewel theft ever - at the Met Gala. Lots of tense moments, lots of humour, and some imaginative writing made this movie one to relax with. I also enjoyed the all-woman robbery crew, and the cast of some of the great actresses: Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, and Helena Bonham-Carter.
- DirectorJohn Francis DaleyJonathan GoldsteinStarsJason BatemanRachel McAdamsKyle ChandlerA group of friends who meet regularly for game nights find themselves entangled in a real-life mystery when the shady brother of one of them is seemingly kidnapped by dangerous gangsters.Game Night was a promising but ultimately disappointing and saccharine film about Max and Annie, the world's most competitive couple (Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams), who host a game night every weekend. Then Max's better-looking, more succesful, richer brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) comes into town and starts hosting game night at his larger, plusher mansion. His idea is to have a murder mystey night which becomes far too real. There were some laughs and some enjoyable scenes, but the movie went on for too long and devolved from highly amusing to overwrought and overdone.
- DirectorTerry JohnsonStarsMartin ClunesJohn CallenGareth ReevesMartin Clunes plays a curator from an English museum who is being asked to return a mystical Maori relic to New Zealand. All sorts of cultural misunderstanding abound as well as an unexpected romantic attraction.
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanEmma WatsonFlorence PughJo March reflects back and forth on her life, telling the beloved story of the March sisters - four young women, each determined to live life on her own terms.

- DirectorJoachim RønningEspen SandbergStarsPål Sverre HagenAnders BaasmoGustaf SkarsgårdIn 1947, with five loyal friends in tow, explorer Thor Heyerdahl sails a fragile balsa wood raft along an ancient path some 4,300 miles across the Pacific. What a beautiful movie! This is the second time I've watched it and once again I was overpowered by the scenery, by the handsome Swedish actors, and by the incredible story of sailing a raft from Peru to French Polynesia to prove that Polynesian peoples did not come originally from Asia, as was the scientific position at the time, but from South America. This film brilliantly portrays the wonders and the perils of the sea voyage. The excellence of this film was crowned by my favourite Scandinavian actor, Pål Sverre Hagen, playing the adventurer Thor Heyerdahl.
- DirectorHugh HudsonStarsBen CrossIan CharlesonNicholas FarrellTwo British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian, are driven to win in the 1924 Olympics as they wrestle with issues of pride and conscience.Chariots of Fire is one of the best films I've ever seen. I first saw it in 1982, shortly after it won the Best Picture Oscar, and have watched it over and over again through the years. It never gets old. It's the tale of British athletes, runners, who are headed for the Olympics in Paris in 1924. It was the first time I'd seen Ian Holm act, and I watched the movie this time to honour the passing of this fine British actor, who has delighted me in many films.
- DirectorLasse HallströmStarsEwan McGregorEmily BluntAmr WakedA fisheries expert is approached by a consultant to help realize a sheik's vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert and embarks on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible possible. One of my favourite films involves a legal assistant (Emily Blunt), a civil servant in the fisheries department of the UK government (Ewan McGregor), and a Yemeni sheik who wishes to bring a river and salmon fishing to his dry desert country. Beautiful scenery, great acting, a romantic comedy with a bit extra. Loved it.
- DirectorSkye BorgmanStarsJan BrobergBob BrobergMary Ann BrobergThe twisting, turning, stranger-than-fiction true story of the Brobergs, a naive, church-going Idaho family that fell under the spell of a sociopathic neighbor with designs on their twelve-year-old daughter. This is probably the weirdest documentary I've ever watched, and it was very disturbing. It's about the Broberg family: mom, dad, three daughters, Mormons living in Idaho. They make friends with a new couple in town; the Berchtolds, and Mr. Berchtold, a pedophile, becomes fascinated with Jan, and kidnaps her not once but twice. The actions, or lack thereof, of Jan's parents is unbelievable. I felt great shock and horror at the obviously sociopathic kidnapper, but I am also very disgusted with her parents, who were either incredibly gullible or just plain dumb. The whole thing made me angry, and I really didn't enjoy this documentary.
- DirectorBen AffleckStarsMorgan FreemanEd HarrisCasey AffleckTwo Boston area detectives investigate a little girl's kidnapping, which ultimately turns into a crisis both professionally and personally.Gone Baby Gone was a really good film. Written and directed by Ben Affleck, the film focuses on the recent disappearance of Amanda, the four-year old daughter of a drug addict in a run-down area of Boston. When the cops (Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman) fail to find any trace of her, young Patrick (Casey Affleck) and his girlfriend Angie (Michelle Monaghan) start a search on their own. Swept up in a tide of drugs, murder, corruption, and broken rules, Patrick and Angie risk their lives to find Amanda and to stop the person who took her. The movie was violent and dark, but it was very well done and just the kind of thriller that I like best.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsJake GyllenhaalRobert Downey Jr.Mark RuffaloBetween 1968 and 1983, a San Francisco cartoonist becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac Killer, an unidentified individual who terrorizes Northern California with a killing spree. The movie Zodiac is about the hunt for a serial killer in California who murdered young couples in the 1970s and has, to this day, never been caught, although police believe that they know who the killer is. There were strong actors in the film: the cast was almost entirely male. Performances by Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Robert Downey Jr. made the acting strong. Despite a talented cast and an interesting story, I didn't care for the movie for a couple of reasons, the main one is that there were no answers, which always turns me off a movie. Also, I felt that the film wasn't edited well, so the action jumped around, and that made it a difficult film to follow.
- DirectorDanis TanovicStarsJeffrey Dean MorganFamke JanssenCush JumboA New York detective investigates the death of his daughter who was murdered while on her honeymoon in London; he recruits the help of a Scandinavian journalist when other couples throughout Europe suffer a similar fate. This ranks as one of the worst films I've ever watched all the way through. I was stuck in the film because of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who is lovely. (Remember Denny on Grey's Anatomy? *sigh*) An NYPD detective flies to London where his honeymooning daughter and son-in-law have been murdered in gruesome fashion, following a pattern of crimes that have occurred across Europe. That much I understood. The rest of the movie was incomprehensible. There was something about an abusive father, and something about incest, but I'm not sure how it all fits together and I don't particularly care.
- DirectorMarielle HellerStarsMatthew RhysTom HanksChris CooperBased on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Lloyd Vogel.Tried this twice. I like Tom Hanks and I liked Mr. Rogers. The film was awful (at least the first fifteen minutes were) so I gave up.
- DirectorRawson Marshall ThurberStarsJason SudeikisJennifer AnistonEmma RobertsA veteran pot dealer creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico.Silly comedy about a street-corner drug dealer turned smuggler (Jason Sudeikis) who hires a stripper (Jennifer Aniston) and two stray teenagers to be his family so that Mexican border guard officials are less inclined to suspect the smuggling operation. Lots of sight gags, happy ending, all that....it was enjoyable without being particularly cerebral.
- DirectorAneesh ChagantyStarsJohn ChoDebra MessingJoseph LeeAfter his teenage daughter goes missing, a desperate father tries to find clues on her laptop.I believe I watched this a year or two again but that it had a different title. A widower's teenage daughter goes missing, and the father uses the girl's social media to track her down. Interesting premise, certainly makes me less likely to post anything online.
- DirectorJon JonesStarsGeraldine JamesMichael JuddJulia DeardenA young woman's penchant for sensational Gothic novels leads to misunderstandings in the matters of the heart.A mediocre adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, which sent up the extremes of Gothic fiction. There was nothing Gothic about this movie. It was rather insipid, and the character of Henry Tilney was as lackluster as they come.
- DirectorJulian FarinoStarsBenedict CumberbatchKelly MacdonaldStephen Campbell MooreThe life of a children's book author is turned upside down when his daughter goes missing.I really enjoyed this adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel about a couple's lives after their small daughter is kidnapped. Benedict Cumberbatch played the lead role, and his grief and sorrow-filled days were played beautifully.

- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsElle FanningAJ MichalkaKyle ChandlerDuring the summer of 1979, a group of friends witness a train crash and investigate subsequent unexplained events in their small town. What started out as an interesting plot soon devolved into coincidence, bad writing, and some poor acting. A group of young adolescent boys go to the railyard to play a scene of a film that one of them has written. While they are there, a train derails because of a pickup truck on the tracks, and all hell breaks loose. Although I was intrigued by its opening, the movie did not live up to its promise, and its continuation seemed idiotic and contrived.
