Buster Keaton is the ultimate comedy genius of silent film.

by alexanderdavies-99382 | created - 20 Sep 2019 | updated - 11 Sep 2022 | Public

For many years, Buster Keaton has taken his place amongst the funniest and most inventive silent comedians of all time. Even though the vision was his, he always acknowledged the contributions of his gag writers. Having had little formal education, Keaton functioned as an intuitive artist and relied upon improvisation for his films. After parting company with his mentor Roscoe Arbuckle, Buster Keaton began his own career as a solo film comedian. The result was a series of short films that included Buster in all manner of comic mayhem. In terms of creativity, these shorts include some of the finest comedy in film history. Then, there followed several successful features that are regarded as masterpieces: "The Navigator," "Sherlock Jr," "Seven Chances" and "The General." 1928 proved to be the beginning of a difficult period in Keaton's life. Having signed with "M.G.M," the comedian began to lose all creative control and was fired five years later. Fortunately, Buster Keaton lived long enough to enjoy the beginnings of what has become an exceptional legacy.
